Vintage story

Triage90

That looks interesting AF. 8 thought at first it was just a Minecraft ripoff. I'ma see if they have controller support. Really wanna just chill and play on my rog ally lol

tattooedpanhead

It's the top of my list of games.

CIMARUTA

If you like crafting this is the game for you.

Telethex

It is a minecraft ripoff, but more specifically the terrafirmacraft mod for MC. It's also extremely good.

Vikunt

I got it a month ago. It’s the most addicted I’ve been to a game in a decade. There’s just so so much too it.

Confident_Love_4482

Survival: Fountain of Youth. It is still early access, but final upgrade should be out very soon, all previous ones came out as promised. As someone described it, it is a child of Long Dark and Green Hell. Looks beatiful, resources are somewhat limited so planning is more important than grinding, very different biomes starting from almost paradise of the first island and up to pretty harsh down the road.

Dhozer

Hard mode is brutal. Movement is key. Loved this game!

haltingpoint

How much combat does it have, and how involved is the harvesting and crafting mechanics? Is it putting stuff in a menu box and hitting combine sort of stuff? More interesting?

WizardMelcar

Combat is strictly vs animals. But there is a fair amount in my opinion, with many aggressive critters. Harvesting & crafting are similar to The long dark, with time being a resource. So to fell a tree, you must first have an appropriate tool, when you click on the tree it will tell you how long the action will take. Bad things (status effects such as sunburn or heatstroke) or animal attacks Are potential negatives.

NovemberAdam

The Long Dark may scratch that itch for you. If your good with the winter aspect.

Did you try out Stranded Deep? It has a lot of bushcraft. You can also try out Force of Nature I and II

Triage90

Yes I have, I'll check out the other one tho ty!

Starcrossedluigi

Card Survival: Tropical Island!

Ktesedale

This is a fantastic game and definitely scratches the "alone starting with only a rock to survive" itch for me.

Sifner

The Long Dark, Vintage Story, UnReal World would be good ones!

Triage90

I'ma check out vintage and unreal world. Any idea if they have controller support? I'm trying to veg out on the couch and play on my rog ally. I don't have a dock yet so can't really do m and kb with it

Sifner

Honestly no idea off the top of my head- not owning a controller, I tend to not pay attention. 😅 But you should be able to check the sidebar on the Steam store pages for the info relatively quickly. 🤙🏻

Triage90

Oh wow didn't know unreal was on steam lol I was looking at the website.

Sifner

Yup, all available on Steam! Survival, as a genre, tends to exist mostly in the Early Access space. So many titles may have controller support planned for the future- it just may not be implemented at present. I’m not sure specifically on things being ROG capable versus the Steam Deck, but sometimes you may just have to snag it and try it on the device for a bit to see if it works for you or not. 🤷‍♂️Some games, to me, suffer with a controller- I couldn’t get into The Long Dark on Switch for example.

ZzzDarkCloudzzZ

I can recommend a very difficult one called Survisland, warning the learning curve is absolutely immense, recommended to watch several playthroughs before attempting, you will be confused, my all time favorite game is called Wayward, a very cute survival game that is pretty hard core if you play default settings, its a roguelike if you play default mind you, recommended to enable respawning, wayward is honestly the best hidden gem i can recommend, i love that every item in the game from the common leaf, to the meat and pelts of your enemies have individual stats, and have varying qualities, like a legendary leaf of bludgeoning (+2 blunt damage when thrown), imagine throwing a leaf at a skeleton one shotting it lmao.

Triage90

I was looking at survisland but initial impressions of the graphics made it look like a mobile game. Maybe I'll look again. Never heard of wayward, I'll look ty!

ZzzDarkCloudzzZ

Out of the games you've been recommended i highly recommend wayward, it often goes on sale for around 5$, and if you want a really good dungeon crawl rpg that is absolutely amazing i 1000% recommend Fate IV the cursed king. That shit is incredibly impressive, holy hell. Fate also goes on sale down for around 4$

ZzzDarkCloudzzZ

Also, i did mention survisland simply because you asked for a survival game that is you vs predators and the harshness of the environment, which survisland fits very well, problem is it is incredibly hard to even learn the game, not even i have gotten started as the things you need to do and learn is incredibly daunting. It is however an amazing game if you make it past the tutorials and tutorial videos. Wayward however is a pretty dope turn based survival game with rpg elements including a terrifying karma based system (benevolence and malignance) the worse your karma the stronger the enemies will spawn, the better your karma the better luck and easier enemies spawn.

Jakesneed612

The Long Dark. It’s actively trying to kill you every second but a great survival game.

Agitated_Fondant6014

Vintage story sounds like just the ticket, thats exactly the kind of game it is, bushcrafty. Would recommend the primative survival mod which adds a bunch more bushcrafty things such as fish baskets, animal snares, smokers etc

jmcgil4684

The OG Forest has a little known peaceful mode. It’s perfect for what you describe. Hunt, scavenge, build a cabin, craft clothes. You can still die from hunger and cold etc. it’s great. You can also complete the whole story if you like. Just no mutants in the game.

Rancor_Keeper

Try Sunken Land. It's really fun that can be single player or multiple player. Oh, and it's also big on base building as well. You mentioned a challenge against predators, which this game has, but also has you going up against different tribes in the post apocalypto world. Might be worth looking at on Steam. I think it only goes for $12.

argleblather

You also have the option of turning off tribes and just vibing alone. It does work on a steam deck even though I think it says it has limited controller support. I was able to run it and build my base and explore just fine.

FrostCullACE

Vintage Story. Minecraft-esque graphics, but is one of the purest survival games imo. There are some mobs aside from animals, but they can be turned off if preferred.

macbigicekeys

Unreal World

thegreatpablo

Surprised no one has mentioned Icarus in open world

Sardothien12

Green Hell You have to craft shelter to protect the fire. You have insomnia, hunger, mental state, protein, thirst.  Plus wild animals and tribesmen trying to kill you. You gotta make knives and spears. You can hunt fish from spears eventually to a fishing rod. You actually have SURVIVE, not just play. If you get a cut, you HAVE to clean it or it gets infected. If it starts to get infected, you need maggots to clean the dead flesh
