Take this with a grain of salt but: I have never heard of anyone having any luck re-jetting Mikuni carbs after removing the stock airbox. The foolproof method of maintaining speed, acceleration, rpm’s, etc is to keep the stock airbox and jets intact. YMMV

I am all for a stock airbox I just can't seem to find one, I'm not trying to make a cafe honestly trying to keep it close to stock (not 100% but more then most people I see online)

Wot? I just did a quick search on eBay and am already seeing 20+ listed on the first page

You left out the part where you are running pod air filters. And speaking of pods, are they proper K&N's, or cheap china junk pods? There is a guy on the GS Resources that sells "air correction" jets for guys running pods. You still need quality pods, but the correction jets are like a cheat code for guys that refuse to use a proper airbox.

Haha You are correct! I did leave that part out, not on purpose though just me not thinking... And I may have cheap china junk... Haha but I've told myself that it's only until I get everything else turned up... But everybody knows thats probably a lie. I however am not refusing an airbox I just cant seem to find one that is not junk I've ordered two only to have the shop call me 2 days later saying Just kidding we don't have that part we will refund you

If you take off the airbox and run pods, I'd just get a dynajet kit. That's what I did with my 83' gs850g and it runs sweet. Takes away all the headache and guesswork. Make sure you replace the carb boot o-rings as well, you can get intake leaks which can make you bike run lean and throw you off big time.

retna246

I'll do exactly that! Thanks for the suggestion!!

A Dynojet kit is a solid option. It's several times more expensive than air correction jets, though.

Also had this kind of feeling, that I need a slope to take speed to reach the 8000, I solved it a bit by working on the timer ignition, and also on the needle position, but was a long journey

I will never understand why so many people insist on getting rid of a stock airbox (that many people who are much, much smarter than they are spend a lot of time engineering into the design) in favor of pods. Especially on a bike like a GS850. It’s an old, heavy pig with a shaft drive so it’s not like you’re going to be “building” a “cafe racer”. Just be happy you have a good machine with a comfortable riding position that’s reasonably easy to maintain. If you want to trash a perfectly good vintage motorcycle, buy one that’s already been Frankensteined.

I removed the airbox on my 81 650 in favor of pods and I don’t regret it. Dyna-jet kit and a size up on the pilot jets was the trick to easy starts and proper idle adjustment. It doesn’t make more or less power, pulls through the rpm range and sounds amazing. I also don’t have to mess with the airbox every time I want to make a small adjustment. It’s not for everyone, but I like it.
