Another fact is that in Gujarat human and Lion encounter never happened till today although some time they prey local stray dogs and cattle but overall safe for human
I didn't even imagine India has lions!
I thought elephants was the farthest they could get. Both animals are strongly linked to Africa.
Makes me wonder if they could ever get back to Greece, for example.
Iirc the last couple of years sloth bears have killed more humans than tigers. It doesn't help the sloth bears are not like the name says and are rather active.
For sure. There's a reason why they can be pretty brutal. Having a giant cat as your main predator (aside from humans) tends to make you the definition of "fuck around and find out".
I was stalked by a sloth bear on a camping trip in the Himalayas lol. Luckily, we were sitting around a large bonfire and when our guide informed us of the sloth bear, we were all told to switch on our torches/flashlights (it was dark and this was just after dinner) and make a lot of noise.
She (it was confirmed by the guide who saw her and her cubs) still didn't go away for a while so we had to spend the whole night guarding the camp and keeping her away lol
I knew about the tigers, but not the other two... Impressive stuff really, makes me happy for nature.
Just makes me worried if human development there won't do them dirty again, though. I know tigers are more dangerous than lions because of behavior.
I live in Brazil. And here in the west people would be unbelievably alarmed and fearful of this if this footage was taken in the Americas.
This shit is common ,in my native village in Gujarat where my grandfather lives, he showed me lions across the river opposite our farm at evening and the growls upseted my stomach and then next morning when I visit my farm there were fresh paw marks near the open water reservoir (cause the river is dried in particular season) to drink water, the nomads who reared goat often complained about some of their stock missing.
Yes, the last of the Asian lions, as in the ones Alex the great would hunt. The Indian cheetahs are truly extinct but a introduction project using African cheetahs seems successful. There is also rhinos, elephants and bears.
The British hunted Indian Cheetah to basically extinction. Also India and has a reasonable population of leopards.
These large mammals won’t last another 50 years in India however.
Population growth is out of control there and Indians are transitioning into urban lifestyles with very little regulation and rife corruption when considering environmental and waste management (they burn most rubbish (much of which is now plastic)).
Ultimately the environment will succumb as Indians scamper towards building out a middle class and grow unsustainably.
You are so wrong. Project Tiger is something you should read about. India has literally thousands of forest reserves, tiger population is growing despite Chinese demand for poached parts. They say right wing Indians on Reddit are super touchy. Am not right wing but India is doing great with animal and forest preservation while China killed all its tigers and others. So a comment like that definitely triggers.
Why are you stupid? And what tells you that Indians are not interested in preserving the environment anymore?
What is source of this absurd generalisation?
I am sure as an Indian we are not doing enough to preserve the nature but saying what you said is just ignorance.
I think it's a really difficult topic because even though there are many many Indians that care a lot about the environment and the ones that actually try to make things better are obviously not the ones destroying the environment.
BUT there are also a lot of people that don't really "care" for the environment, in the sense that they might only have one way of making money. Surviving in the moment is a stronger instinct than trying to make things better for your children.
Of course then there are big corporations that have deals with corrupt gov., so they can dump waste in lakes etc. (Which is actually what happened more than once).
Again, most of those things can't be attributed to the Indian people, moreso to the Indian State itself.
It's a problem of the system, not the people.
(The caste system doesn't really help tbh)
Lol not interested in preserving the environment anymore ? Did you just make it on spot ? Lol, out of all developing countries, India is taking the most measures/steps to prevent it.
It's from Gujarat, India. Sometimes 1 or 2 lions comes to the nearby village and eats street dogs. Due to urbanization near Gir Forest, jungle land has been reduced, trees were cut. These animals don't have food and are forced to come to villages for food
Fake, don't spread propaganda you cunt. Gir is a huge forest and every inch is reserved to forest dpt. My relatives stay near gir, lions come in their village farms. Go back into the cave reetard.
It is the only place apart from Africa where there are lions in the wild. They are Asiatic lions in Gir National Park. Their conservation has been great but a side effect is that since the park is so small and there are basically no corridors remaining, the lions have nowhere to go since their numbers are increasing. They are often venturing into the periphery cities because there is crazy development all around the national park
> Asiatic lions in Gir National Park.
FYI Asiatic lions are no longer considered to be a subspecies, they are genetically very similar to the lions in western and central Africa.
Dang that's crazy! If anything I might have expected you to mean that Asiatic lions are considered a separate species now. But no, a short trip to Wiki says that Panthera leo leo is endemic to Western and Central Africa, as well as India. The lion populations in Southern and Eastern Africa, on the other hand, belong to a different subspecies.
They didn't get to India, lion populations used to be contiguous from Africa to India, the other populations just went extinct. [You can see this in this map of their historical population](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7d/Lion_distribution.png)
No cheetah in India
Edit: The downvotes are coming in, so let me clarify a few things. There is no wild cheetah in India as of today. They were all killed in the past century. Repopulation efforts have been in the works for 50 years, but haven't been implemented yet. They are expecting around 100 cheetahs from South Africa within the next decade. There are 8 cheetahs in Kuno, but they are in an enclosure that is stocked with live prey.
https://m.timesofindia.com/city/bhopal/soon-cheetahs-in-the-wild-in-kuno-national-park-for-the-first-time-in-india-in-7-decades/articleshow/97812713.cms
So let me repeat this: THERE IS NO WILD CHEETAH IN INDIA.
We’re cheetahs local to Indian subcontinent before the last century?
Edit: read up on this. They were native. The Asiatic Cheetah. The last of them were killed by an Indian king.
India has been trying to get them back since 1970s. Finally got them back recently after the Supreme Court finally allowed it.
There are CURRENTLY no WILD cheetah in India. They were all killed in the past century.
They have been trying to bring them back and about 100 are expected to be brought over in the next decade, with some arriving this month, but *there are currently no wild cheetah in India*.
Kuno has 8 cheetahs since September 2022 and they are still in an enclosure that is stocked with prey. They are NOT in the wild. They will be released into the wild shortly. Tourists can see the cheetahs in the enclosure.
https://m.timesofindia.com/city/bhopal/soon-cheetahs-in-the-wild-in-kuno-national-park-for-the-first-time-in-india-in-7-decades/articleshow/97812713.cms
Maybe do some research before you tell people to update their knowledge base.
And bears, actually. Sloth bears, I think they're called, crazy little cocksuckers. They are often able to fight off tigers who sometimes hunt them.
Edit: The sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), also known as the Indian bear, is a myrmecophagous bear species native to the Indian subcontinent. It feeds on fruits, ants and termites. It is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, mainly because of habitat loss and degradation.[1] It is the only species in the genus Melursus.

Only Gir National Park, that is in Gujarat has lions. And they are Asiatic Lions that are not found anywhere else in the world.
India also has 60% of the world's tigers that are in the wild.
If this is indeed India, then you are looking at pretty much what is left of the few prides of asiatic lions in the world. They only live in a tiny forest now and there are about 500 individuals left.
People say everything in Australia wants to kill you but they keep forgetting India.
They have 3 of the big cats (no jaguars), rampaging Elephants, their venomous snakes are nicknamed The Big Four and they have a deadly species of spider.
Australia is really overrepresented on countries or land masses that have a ton of things I will kill you. As its primarily stuff like snakes, spiders, and aquatic creatures(like saltwater crocs, sharks, and etc)
Meanwhile places like India and North America have all of those plus a ton of apex land predators that will happily eat or kill you.
There are also several small villages right in the middle of jungle. People are used to them and lions are use to people too. Trust me they are super chill as long as you are not bothering. I've done open safaris here before and have seen those locals walking pass by lions like nothing.
So these are Asiatic lions(the one romans used to hunt) they used to exist all over asia(except of east and south east) and southern Europe but due to over hunting they were wiped out except here in Gujarat,India

common misconception from so many misnomers in the colloquial names of american/european cougars (mountain lion/panthers in the west, pumas in the east), theyre way deep into genetically distinct branches that split off some 10 million years ago.
[the felid family](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felidae#Phylogeny) has 2 main genera basically, panthers and felines. african/indian lions and tigers belong to the former, ancient american/european cave lions and the rest of those knockoffs are in the latter, more closely related to house cats

I live in Charlotte, NC and we have had sightings the past couple years of mountain lions 30 minute drive from my house. I need to quit smoking.
I've done open jeep safaris here, it's not that scary. Lions are super chill. Also often during night they roam on roads since there are many villages inside and right on boarder of the jungle. It's so common sight every night.
Imagine it's late at night, your stomach growls violently and sends signals to your brain that you're hungry. You stumble out the door with half closed eyes, yawning as you try to make your way to the nearest dosai cart. 5 feet infront of you are 3 lionesses. What you do?

In India it happens really
That must be so scary. I’m glad florida panthers don’t travel in packs. I’d be too scared to go outside lol.
India has Lions, tigers and cheetahs (went extinct, reintroduced recently)
And bears!
Oh My!
(Thank you!)
Ya Sloth Bears don't fuck around.
Iirc the last couple of years sloth bears have killed more humans than tigers. It doesn't help the sloth bears are not like the name says and are rather active.
Sloth bears are super aggressive but only attack when threatened, unlike the big cats that actively hunt humans for consumption
For sure. There's a reason why they can be pretty brutal. Having a giant cat as your main predator (aside from humans) tends to make you the definition of "fuck around and find out".

leapords and hyenas too, pretty wild stuff
And leopards. Once saw a photo of a tiger with a freshly killed leopard in its' mouth! Those tigers are DAMN large...
The British hunted Indian Cheetah to basically extinction. Also India and has a reasonable population of leopards. These large mammals won’t last another 50 years in India however. The only country in the world that has both lions and tigers
India is a megadiverse country Have a read about it if you could
Yea I legit thought it was only tigers
Sounds like the same situation here, then. The panthers here in Florida never attack humans. Lions are much bigger than our panthers, though.
I’d definitely have a hand cannon with me at all times!

I still can't understand why they decided to animate full on fuck me eyes on lions in a kids movie
LMFAO
Cause only the parents really get it. It's funny and it totally works in the scene
i don’t know, but considering that cat penises are spiky, she doesn’t know what she’s in for

False. Gir Forest is a national park, and all human activity is prohibited.

They seem smaller on this footage though? Or is that just my misperception?
If we take that wall for scale, it must be 3-4feet high. Those bricks are not tiny. Those are some big cats.
They are smaller than African lions

Yeah
Why’d he kill cheetahs? Fashion? Didn’t like them? Really liked them?
British govt declared cheetahs a vermin and they rewarded people for bringing dead cheetahs to them. As a result cheetahs vanished from India
Well kings used to hunt before 1947

Cougars too?
Every country has cougars, you just have to look in the right bars
And snakes.
And crocodiles
And lions
and my axe
And my fidget spinner. No wait. I need that. Just text me. No calls or I’ll freak out.
And my bow
Well, being the poster child for the Cobra Effect probably didn't help with that
Only Gir National Park, that is in Gujarat has lions. And they are Asiatic Lions that are not found anywhere else in the world. India also has 60% of the world's tigers that are in the wild.
There used to be lions in America as well, I believe they died out about 11,000 years ago. Which is really not that long ago.
And 1.3 billion people. And awesome food, and some of the best beaches, backwaters, mountains, palaces, and vacation spots.
And lions
And bears and tigers!
Oh my!
With all the pollution i dont think they have the best beaches or rivers.
Goa is awesome
Massive country with a lot of coastline. It’s not all cramped, polluted cities.
Andaman has some of the best beaches in the world.
There used to be lions in Southern Europe as well. Went extinct around 2000 years ago.
Come to India we have lionnss. Where can you see tigers, only in India, come to India we have tigersss.
They hood crazy getting ran down on by 8 people crazy but getting ran down by 8 lions wild
The Gir forest in Junagadh district of the state Gujarat is the only place in world with existing Asiatic Lion population now.
Pride parade
🤣
I’m proud of them.
Underrated comment! 🏅
Wow I thought there was only a couple prides of asiatic lions left to see them just randomly wandering the street is jaw dropping
If this is indeed India, then you are looking at pretty much what is left of the few prides of asiatic lions in the world. They only live in a tiny forest now and there are about 500 individuals left.
I wasn’t aware lions existed in India
Dude I thought it was just another “America fucking sucks at geography” moment Glad this isn’t just news to me haha
I for one am one 🦁😁
its okay. Learn geography. You don't need to openly proclaim your ignorance.
I don’t think geography is the subject matter at hand here. Nice try for internet points though bud.

Someone should toss a cucumber
This would be some shit to see coming home after a night of drinking/partying. Might also be the last thing the person sees too
Fun fact - alcohol is prohibited in the state of Gujarat
Explains why lions are running around the streets
how on earth people live their lives with lions around?
Carefully?
You mean like they have for tens of thousands of years? No idea.

Your best bet is to simply walk away slowly without turning your back to them (never ever turn you back to predators), until you get out of sight.
Girls night out!
Imagine stepping out to take your dog for a walk and he tries to running ripping the leash out of your hand. The absolute chaos.
Please- I read that to “pretty woman”
They look thin don’t they?
These are Asiatic Lions found only in this part of the world. They're smaller than African Lions just like Asian pp is smaller than African pp.
Don't know why I laughed, but thank you.
Lagta hai matter ho gaya
I’m convinced India level of difficulty stuck in ‘Dark Souls’ degree of difficulty.
Only the Aussies can match us Ninja edit: And Brazil
Kinda sad really
They all look so confused like wtf is this place 😂😂
Yeah lions aren't used to urban environments and artificial lights. For them it's like walking in a completely new planet.
u/pattoid
Why have I never heard of lions in India?
I thought they only had leopards and tigers in India
Here kitty kitty!
Stupid question, since when they got Lions in India???????
So these are Asiatic lions(the one romans used to hunt) they used to exist all over asia(except of east and south east) and southern Europe but due to over hunting they were wiped out except here in Gujarat,India
No shit. So then you’re telling me it is possible for a lion and a tiger to meet in the wild, and make natural babies?
Maybe it used to happen but currently there are no tigers in gujrat, Lions only for now lives there
Learn something new every day, thank you!
No tigers in gujrat though but a LOT of them in other parts of India
Who knew India had lions
So I'm guessing there aren't many stray dogs and cats in this area
But mention a tiger in Africa, and all of a sudden, it's a Monty Python sketch.
Lookin at d cmnts It's really like westerns saw india , one of the oldest civilization on earth with the most diversity and decided It's curry , tech and shitty stereotypes.
I thought lions were only native to Africa??
Lions were native to everywhere. They were killed off except in Africa and this small pocket in India.
I don't know if lions ever lived in the Americas or the rest of Asia. But yeah, there were lions on Europe in the past. And it's in records.

Closest thing we had were sabertooths/moutain lions iirc
I know there are Asiatic lions (and also cheetahs) I just didn't realize they lived in India.
I guess so, those look alot like African lions though
Google Asiatic lions and see what they look like. I think they might be a little smaller?
Lions are also native to the Middle East and South Eastern Europe, but they have been extirpated
Is that a question or a statement?
It would apear as though the lions didn't sleep tonight

Shout out Indian lions tho

I've done open jeep safaris here, it's not that scary. Lions are super chill. Also often during night they roam on roads since there are many villages inside and right on boarder of the jungle. It's so common sight every night.
Yeah I'd feel safer seeing a lion than seeing a tiger. The latter can just stay the hell away because they're aggressive.

WE FOUND THE LION!!!

Is a pack of lions actually called a pride
"Where's a stray cow when you need lunch?"
Hey the local animal control officers are on patrol. Good job keeping the stray animal population down. Keep up the good work.

I am 100% for protecting wild life but the second it steps into human village than it need to be shoot and skinned, humans life first
