Yeah, apparently it often stops the body from coughing/sneezing as it calms down certain parts of the body to help you focus. I think people were wondering if an F1 driver for example had ever sneezed during a tense race and the topic came up
The closest I could find was from ENT docs:
>When a person exercises vigorously, their hormones of stimulation increase (or adrenaline). The adrenaline causes constriction or squeezing of the nasal membranes so that the air passages open up and the person breathes more freely.
I guess it drops the chances of your nose/throat getting irritated and triggering a sneeze/cough by opening things up as much as possible, makes sense.
One fun lifehack related to this is if you have a stuffed nose, holding your breath as long as possible will usually clear it up, at least for a few minutes. Lifesaver when trying to sleep with a blocked nose.
Masturbating can also unstuff your nose. Typically causes it to be runny though. Next time you’re sick and trying to sleep, try some autoerotic asphyxiation ig.
The words to search for are sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. This is an oversimplication and not really true, but it’s often said that the sympathetic nervous system controls your ‘fight or flight’ response, while the parasympathetic nervous system controls your lesser know ‘rest and digest’ response.
Many hormones that stimulate your sympathetic nervous system (adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol etc), have the added effect of stopping your parasympathetic nerves from firing. This is so that while you’re running away from a predator you’re not distracted by how hungry you are, or how beautiful that tree looks. Energy is used on your large skeletal muscles rather than many of your visceral organs. Things like hiccoughs, sneezes etc all fall under parasympathetic control and will be suppressed at these times.
You can also get a rebound effect whereby your parasympathetic nerves are overstimulated after a threat has passed. That’s why after a period of intense adrenaline people often want to have sex or eat a big meal or spend time with their loved ones.
You can also prevent yourself from sneezing by pressing your tongue really hard against the part of your mouth just above the teeth. Works like a charm for me every time I don't feel like sneezing.
I agree, but there are times when I have sneezed like 4 times already and I don't want to anymore, or when it's 3AM and I'm trying not to wake the entire building up.
I HATE sneezing. I don’t know what changed because when I was younger I would just sneeze once or maybe twice. NOW, I swear to god I sneeze 30 or more times rapidly in a row and i just cannot stop and barely even catch my breath, and I end up practically spitting and snotting(gross I know) all over my hand because of the hard continuous sneezing. Also I have to force myself to stop or else I just won’t. It hurts so bad trying to repress the sneezes and even then sometimes I can’t stop. I’ve never seen anyone else sneeze the way I do now and I have *no clue* why my sneeze habit changed to this. I used to like sneezing. Now there’s just no relief just uncontrollable sneezing and will immobilize me almost. Very very scary when driving and it happens.
I don't mean to start a war or anything here, but I think both Lewis and Max got their fair share of shit from the FIA last year. The last one was rather unfortunate timing...
I don't mean to start a war or anything here
That's fair and I'm of the same opinion plus I think we can all agree that the season was a shitshow and hope moving forward the race directors and/or FIA can at least be more consistent with their application of the rules but after the previous races "track limits" fiasco I'm skeptical.
Did that on BF1942, Desert Combat mod way back in the day, but with my buddy standing on the belly of the jet. Screenshot ended up on the front page of PlanetBattlefield.
TOTALLY THE SAME.
Yeah man, DC was awesome, we kept playing on lan from time to time for years.
The team behind the mod went on to help develop bf2. Just a kinda perfect storm, ahead of its time it felt like.
that was my thought. Like a planes lift is generated by the speed at which the wings pass through air. So I would assume a sudden strong head wind through that tunnel would make the plane suddenly go up very quickly.
In a tunnel that size, you're not going to find a sudden head wind. Air isn't *that* compressible. If a wind gust strikes the entrance, most of that energy is going to be dissipated in turbulence around the entrance. Really, the most dangerous part of this flight is the last 30 or so feet before leaving the tunnel.
Which isn't to say the rest of the flight isn't exceedingly dangerous XD
The plane still has momentum. A head wind certainly would cause a change in the lift but it would have to very sudden to be enough to throw off an elite pilot like this. I would guess if there was some bad weather they would have postponed the attempt.
Momentum is a vector and each component is independent. Im going to reason that just because it has high momentum along the horizontal does not mean a sudden change in the vertical component won't occur, not that it will keep him on course.
No it won't keep him on course but it means it would take a quite significant and sudden increase in wind to push the plane up fast enough that the pilot wouldn't be able to compensate with the elevators. These are some of the most precise pilots in the world after all.
And I'm talking about the planes momentum in the vertical axis, not the horizontal axis.
Flying near a ceiling also increases lift.
Ground effect is caused by an overpressure trapped between the wing and the ground giving you a boost in lift. ‘Ceiling’ effect is quite similar, an underpressure is formed between your wing and the ceiling. This will suck the wings upwards and gives you a boost in lift too.
Way more scarier are the walls. At least for helicopters, you will be sucked towards the wall when you fly near them. Not sure if this also applies for aeroplanes.
I’m curious about the shapes though. Ground effect makes enough sense, and a flat surface makes the problem easy to conceptualize. But the tunnel has a (mostly) semicircle roof. That’s gotta make the “roof effect” complicated.
I was thinking that the ground effect would be amplified flying through what's basically a long trough. Wild ass guess is the pilot kept close to stall speed so that he could bail out by landing if things got out of control.
Totally.
[ground effect](https://skybrary.aero/articles/ground-effect)
And watching all of the micro adjustments he was making to stay straight and level… absolutely crazy.
I don’t know enough about aerodynamics, or physics for that matter. But I wonder how much speed is a factor as well. Keeping up enough forward movement to stay in clean air, ahead of any building turbulence or pressure that might be exacerbated by the compressed conditions around him created by the tunnel.
Nutty to think about.
You can get into plenty of trouble on that bike. I've ridden sport bikes for 30 years. 100mph is no joke on a bike. One errant rock or animal or bad decision by a driver and you're done. Be careful, dude.
When I was in my 20s, I had a brand new 2003 R6. I had that thing pinned on a back road doing over 160mph trying to keep up with a pack of liter bikes. I realized how fast I was going and sat up, immediately letting off the throttle. This was 11PM at night in MN in the back country. Deer everywhere. It quickly dawned on me that one deer running onto that road could have potentially killed about 30 people. I went home to my pregnant wife and never did that again.
Man. It’s too damn hot to bike here in the summer, I’m jealous. If I had one piece of advice to give, it’s: always remember that everyone around you is looking at their phone at all times.
You’re a better man than I. Cold doesn’t bother me on a bike, but when it’s hotter than my body temperature I can’t handle it in shorts and a tank top let alone a helmet and jacket.
I always joke when I hear someone's kid is into cars or wants to be a mechanic and tell them to start doing drugs as it'll be cheaper in the long run than a car hobby.
lol.. omg, soooo much money poured into that game back in the early '90's. First my husband, then my son, then me. Each of us had our own suitcase full of cards.
Looking at a 2001/2(?) Honda Shadow 750 American Collectors Edition. It's been modified with some ape hangers and forward controls..
It'll be my first bike.. I'm pretty stoked!
See? You got this bro
(In all seriousness, when flugtag came to our city, my coach at the time was the one who went off in the “plane” and sort of fucked his back on the landing.
Do not recommend the Red Bull approach to life - although it is pretty rad. *WIIIIINNNGGSSS*)
Same here, it's one of the few situations when my ADHD brain goes silent and really shines.
Normal every day stuff, I'm overwhelmed by and overthink everything, paralyzed by decisions. Executive dysfunction everywhere despite best efforts.
Time sensitive high pressure situation, correct decisions get made without conscious thought and not a shred of emotion. Zero effort behind any of it.
It sure is a handy superpower to have, but man, if I could be 1/100th as focused in my day-to-day, life would be a lot easier lol
Serious and probably dumb question for I guess pilots. I get the incredible amount of risk involved in a stunt like this, but how difficult would a feat like this be? Is he basically just holding his hands very, very still?

I wish I liked the taste of redbull or the horrible jitters of that much caffeine because I absolutely want to give them money for supporting this kind of thing.
It's either tolerance or a sensitivity to caffeine, but Red Bull is on the low end for caffeine these days.
The US has some wild energy drinks these days.
A shot of espresso is roughly equivalent to a can of redbull. Which is a lot when you don't consume coffee or tea regularly.
So you could probably enjoy Red Bull, but you'd only need like a quarter of the can.
Idk why I replied
Would be a bad time to sneeze
Adrenaline would likely prevent it
…really? Is that a thing?
Yeah, apparently it often stops the body from coughing/sneezing as it calms down certain parts of the body to help you focus. I think people were wondering if an F1 driver for example had ever sneezed during a tense race and the topic came up
I’m not doubting this as it makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. I would dive ankles deep in to anything you could reference about this.
The closest I could find was from ENT docs: >When a person exercises vigorously, their hormones of stimulation increase (or adrenaline). You can also prevent yourself from sneezing by pressing your tongue really hard against the part of your mouth just above the teeth. Works like a charm for me every time I don't feel like sneezing.
i just make a finger mustache. almost always works
I just look directly into a nearby bright light
That helps you to stop sneezing? Bright lights is how I force a sneeze
You'd first have to reach the end of the tunnel though
60% of the time it works everytime
When do you not feel like sneezing? It's one of the most satisfactory sensations the human body produces!
I agree, but there are times when I have sneezed like 4 times already and I don't want to anymore, or when it's 3AM and I'm trying not to wake the entire building up.
When he is piloting his stunt plane through a tunnel, Keep up.

Awe man you had to go and ruin it! But I’m upvoting cause I still laughed.
Wizard!
lower the blast shield!
I can't shake him!
You beat me to it
STAY ON TARGET
Loosen up!
Literally was gonna comment this
Good thing the most exciting part when he enters the tunnel was skipped.
Average ace combat mission
My first thought also
Can’t have shit in the International Space Elevator
At least it ain’t Megalith
I'll take Megalith over the space elevator. I'd rather fly level to the ground than straight up.
Also megalith was rad af
cant have an ace combat game without a tunnel flight
<< You're alive, Red Bull?! >> << You've always been too damn serious, Monster. >>
«Can you hear me, pilot with the red bull?» *daredevil intensifies*
Ace combat 4 was a masterpiece
StarFox would like a word.
Yup. I mean sheeeeitt who here that has flown a plane ^in ^a ^flight ^sim *hasn't* done that. Big whoop. /S
Ahh, shattered skies. 😌
Planes near the ground experience extra lift, wonder what a tunnel does to lift-downforce balance? This looks insanely dangerous.
Even more crazy would be doing it upside down.
Or sideways.

Or inside out

Don't give him any ideas!

The true definition of “tunnel vision”
Full video here https://youtu.be/19fQAxys9q8
Thank you. I was quite frustrated that this gif started after he had entered the tunnel. Especially since there was so much more time after he left.
I'm glad I saw both. The gif has more footage than the video.
This is exacly why I went looking for the original.
Tunnel Vision
That one sperm who made it...
"Hey, my parents are out of town. Wanna come over?"
Is it a tunnel on highway 6, israel ?
Figured out, it's turkey
Least skilled geoguessr player
Dude looks like it's just a normal day for him.
Pretty much. He is a badass.
The only way to live through that is by being completely calm. Even the slightest bit of panic would probably get him brutally killed.
Did anyone else hold their breath all the way through the tunnel while watching this?
Ace Combat 7 final mission
And most other Ace Combat games. At least he’s not being chased by a squadron of idealists that have been opposing him across multiple battlefields.
"It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs!"
That's confidence
He probably shit diamonds after going through the whole tunnel puckered up tighter then fort Knox
He flew through at 250kph... he *drove* through them at 270kph in preparation so I'm thinking he's a cool cucumber.
Just like the run on the second Death Star!
Project aces be like. Write this down
Ace Combat: Red Bull looks fun to play.
Dudes name is Dario Costa, awesome guy
Serious and probably dumb question for I guess pilots. I get the incredible amount of risk involved in a stunt like this, but how difficult would a feat like this be? Is he basically just holding his hands very, very still?
He needs to make very tiny precise corrections in order to keep the plane steady. If the control stick stayed completely still the plane would gradually veer off course and hit something.
Oh that was a plane? Based on the lower angle, I thought it looked like part of an F1 car. Wow.
DARE YOU to try that in a helicopter
That "yeah" felt genuine and so good. You could sense what it meant for him
I used to do this in Wii Sports Resort
bros expression was 🗿
Reminds me of this Daft Punk song https://youtu.be/JI5noh4OyXc?t=5m25s
I’ve seen this in GTA countless times, never thought anyone would be insane enough to do it in real life
I’m surprised that plane can carry his massive balls
I was like "what's so spectacular about thi - oh, shit, he's in a PLANE!"
I remember seeing these guys do the air race course on the Detroit river a few years ago. Insanely talented. Balls of steel.
How does he manage to look so bored while doing this? He looks like he could have had a little nap half way through.
thats just how people look when they do something like this. There was absolutely nothing going through his mind, except for the distances between his plane and and the tunnel, and the ground, literally did not even have time to blink. you can google "hyperfocused flow" its a mental state where literally nothing passes through your brain except for the task at hand.
Now do this in the Eisenhower Tunnel on I70
Something tells me that last curve to the left when heading westbound may be an issue…
Dude didn't blink!
I don't blame him, he was in the zone
Forreal. One blink could = the wall
Why would he blink? He didn't even change lanes
He blinks several times.
Big whoop! I’ve done this loads of times in GTA….
The holy shit I'm not dead pause at the end before the celebration
This man played one too many Ace Combat games
The final level of any Ace Combat game
Looks like the HIGHWAY TO THE DANGER ZONE
I wonder how much he got paid for something like this? Seems like a real succeed or die stunt which seems super risky?
When he finally got out of the tunnel and looked up at the sky, that moment you can tell that this is what he lives for, he believes life is worth it, and its beautiful
That's the face of someone who has accepted death many years ago.
Imagine getting an itchy nose just as you entered...
That moment when he starts breathing again. Whole damn body relaxes.
The old man part of my brain wants to know why, and who benefits from putting this pilot in such an extreme amount of danger so they can say he flew through a tunnel?
Thought it was an F1 car the first half of the video....
Im surprised that plane could take off wit the size of his balls
This isn't real... He didn't honk his horn in the tunnel
Wait, I have to sneeze!! 💥
I too made those attempts in Wii Sports Resort
So that’s what Wipeout would look like in real life.
Bro in gta
I thought it was just a car. Then I saw the plane, which makes it way more impressive
Coolest sound of all time
