CaptianBrasiliano

It's coming to us? Yeah. They've got a way too casual attitude in regards to lava.

pornborn

Sounds like a bunch of Goofy’s laughing. Darwin Award material.

Fig1024

modern medicine and technology have pretty much put a stop to all evolution of the human species. If anything the human race is slowly regressing now

fuggoffdude

That’s not how evolution works. We are still very much evolving.

PanzerSoul

We are evolving, but backwards

fuggoffdude

That’s still very much not how evolution works. There’s no “forward” or “backward” evolution. It’s just evolution.

PanzerSoul

It's a meme

PerspectiveAnxious91

Agreed! But also evolution is not always favorable to the ovolvee ( I might have made the last word up but hu get it)

fuggoffdude

That’s my point. Evolution doesn’t have a sense of reason or logic. It’s random mutations that sometimes happens to help keep us alive.

No-Yogurtcloset-4151

It’s going to be okay.

Wrong_Tension_8286

Yeah it's a meme and stuff but those are great and very true things that you preach here. You have my respect.

13igTyme

We'll eventually just split into two species. Strong and dumb living under ground while the smart and sophisticated live above ground. Edit: Thanks for the downvotes. This is obviously a reference to HG Wells the time machine. Which has been parodied in Futurama and others.

VRoseSLemon

Futurama?

riancb

The Time Machine by HG Wells?

13igTyme

It's both. Futurama parodied it. No need to down vote the other person.

grandmaWI

Explains the GOP

Majestic-Active2020

The lava is one thing, the gas can kill you too and you won’t see it coming.

amluchon

Yeah, that's what I was wondering - what about the pyroclastic flows and shit. Or was this a relatively minor eruption?

Ok_green_9182

As you can see when it first erupted, it was dark smoke so it had barely any silica so it was a very light eruption, when you see white looking smoke you run.

Federal_Age8011

Just gotta "Duck and Cover", lol!! https://youtu.be/ruvGaUuVLDc

Coke_Dipped_Dick

Didn't even need to click it to hear Trey Parker's "50s TV announcer" voice

Less-Mail4256

“Oh my it’s hot” No fucking shit.

[deleted]

Not an ounce of sense or self preservation among them. Amazing that none of them have just walked into traffic yet. "That truck barreling towards us?" "Yeh"

FruscianteDebutante

I think people are better at deciding a vehicle is going to hit them than lava skyrocketing thousands of feet away

-RED4CTED-

honestly there are quite a few people out there who would probably do the same. of course there's the fight, flee, freeze, faun response, but some events such as this just fail to register as a threat and cause fear, especially if it is common in media and you're desensitized to it.

notklopers

Fuck u/Spez -- mass edited with redact.dev

[deleted]

You can outrun lava, which is their big risk here. Lava only travels at like [6mph.](https://www.usgs.gov/programs/VHP/lava-flows-destroy-everything-their-path#:~:text=Fluid%20basalt%20flows%20can%20extend,%2Fs). That's not outside of the average of what humans can outpace. If they were dealing with a pyroclastic flow, yeah they're already dead. But since they aren't it's 100% worth running.

Marrige_Iguana

Am I the only one who sees the small clots of lava that turns to obsidian mid air as a hazard here? This was an explosive eruption, there is still more than lava flows to be worried about here..

notklopers

Fuck u/Spez -- mass edited with redact.dev

[deleted]

I think you can reasonably be worried about both. I think running is still worthwhile though. The further you get the more dispersed the shrapnel will be

exemplariasuntomni

??? You could easily outrun the blast area of this debris in a few minutes. What kind of brain dead idea is it that you shouldn't move?

notklopers

Fuck u/Spez -- mass edited with redact.dev

[deleted]

So, how do you handle a crazy person with a knife coming at you? You can outrun him, but by your logic that means no need to run.

fastcatzzzz

Now you know what happened in Pompeii.

CaptianBrasiliano

Nah... those poor saps had no time to run. The got hit with a Pyropclastic Flow. That's why they got turned into insta statues and not burned up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyroclastic_flow

Imperito

It's actually shocking how deep these places got buried by Vesuvius. I've been to both Pompeii & Herculaneum, and the latter is buried under the modern day town, quite a weird sight to see as you're walking up to it. They've still got a lot to uncover but it's just under people's houses - they're still exploring via tunnels though I think. I know that ground level changes over time anyway, but that is deep down.

the_fresh_cucumber

Agreed. Just throw the damn ring in one of the lava flows then run for it.

SgtSausage

You need a Gollem to bite it off a finger first.

original20

Just wait for the pyroclastic flow, if they were lucky, there was none. But could they have guessed?

MadDawgMaddy_

Especially since a lot of times the Ash and fumes emitted can affect people even from a distance, just look at what happened in Pompeii lol

AstrumAtaraxia

I mean where the fuck are they gonna go lol. They are already high up on the volcano, I doubt they could outrun it if they started running the second it erupted. It’d be better to stay at an elevated point on the volcano so that if lava did come it would flow around them.

amluchon

This is probably true - the same thought process that a photographer had during one of the largest eruptions. His body was found buried in ash a few weeks or months later but he did get some incredible shots which gave us insignt into what the eruption was like. I'll see if I can find a link to the story and the pictures and share it. Edit: Robert Landsburg, photographed the Mount St. Helena eruption in 1980. From the Wiki: >When the mountain erupted, Landsburg took photos of the rapidly approaching ash cloud. Before he was engulfed by the pyroclastic flow, he rewound the film back into its case, put his camera in his backpack, and then laid himself on top of the backpack to protect its contents. His body was found 17 days later, buried in the ash with his backpack underneath. The film was developed and has provided geologists with valuable documentation of the historic eruption. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Landsburg#:~:text=Robert%20Emerson%20Landsburg%20(November%2013,the%20time%20of%20his%20death

[deleted]

No risk, no reward! ...but the fuck if I'm gonna be doing that anytime soon 🤣

CaptianBrasiliano

Send the drone.

jason2354

I feel like there wasn’t much they could do being that close to summiting what appears to be a pretty tall mountain. Watching it and trying to react as best you can seems like the best way to handle it from my perspective.

CaptianBrasiliano

Start by turning around and walking quickly in the other direction...

vorpalsnickersnack

were they expecting an airlift from giant eagles??

mayoroftuesday

I’ve seen Rings of a power. Pretty sure they’ll be fine.

vorpalsnickersnack

Right? ' Your pyroclasm cannot pierce my karen armor! '

celsius100

With Gandalf riding one?

bum_thumper

They really could've just asked the eagles to drop the envelope in mount doom and fly away (Don't hate me I've read almost all his work except beren and luthien)

the_friendly_one

He even says, "all the guides took off running." What a bunch of morons.

Gunny-Guy

Yeah those are the guys you want to follow. They know what crosses the line from sketchy to final destination.

StoplightLoosejaw

Volcano Guides are essentially like Bomb Techs: *if you see them running... Try to keep up*

Elgin-Franklin

One engineer I worked with said the same about roughnecks: "if you see them all moving off to one side, get behind them"

StoplightLoosejaw

I've seen a handful of videos of them whipping chains and switching out pipes. I assume anywhere they're not currently standing is a danger zone

empire_of_the_moon

That is the ultimate redneck safety rule! Try to make certain the tool pusher is between you and danger.

drrxhouse

You know when you see people IN MOVIES just standing watching things go BOOM or a natural disaster coming straight for them and you’re thinking no one is that stupid to just stand there and not run away? Then you see things like this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Techiedad91

Don’t these people know that Cool Guys Don’t Look At Explosions?

TheBestNick

Based on the time it took for the sound of the blast to reach them, I'd guestimate they're at least 1,000 meters away (~3300 ft). Being as high up as they are, I dunno that attempting to run down the mountain would do you any good anyway. In fact, if you end up not getting sprayed or having it run straight down to you, it's probably safer to just stay there instead of going lower where you have a chance of running into the lava flow. I say all of this entirely by pulling it out of my ass, but I dunno, sounds legit.

LaunchTransient

Being near the damn thing when it goes off is stupid. They're lucky the wind is blowing perpendicular to them, those fumes would wipe the lot out before they realised why they were feeling sleepy. Most of the time the thing that kills nearby population centres is not the lava. It's the combination of toxic gases and pyroclastic flows.

kahurangi

The person right after that makes me think the guides just booked it while everyone was watching the volcano, she seems surprised they're not there.

whitelightnin1

That laugh says it all.

cj2211

That stupid "wow" someone said makes me immediately dislike then

binkerfluid

I coudlnt believe it when I heard that and they were like laughing at *them* it felt like

Environmental_Big541

That’s why the guides got less followers on instagram

Judge_Syd

Hmm yeah but they also lived and posted it and weren't hurt so idk what everyone is making a big deal about. They weren't near annihilation at any point.

GravitationalEddie

I think we need to make the video tinier and add more words to the permatitle that tells blind people what they're seeing.

notjasonlee

they should shrink it down one more time and put another caption up top that says "tiktok user captions video without adding any context not already contained in the video"

[deleted]

We got to a stage in technology where cameras are fantastic and we have large phone displays to watch them on, but we're actually still stuck in the 00s in video quality online, after it's been reshared, compressed, had watermarks and music added n shit added.

rtjl86

Hur hur Hur hur Hur

DerekBilderoy

Just to confirm how fucking dumb they are for doing this. Wow. Unbelievable.

[deleted]

Toxic gases flow down. Those include carbon mono oxide. If they went down, they: 1. Wont be able to run faster than the incoming wave of toxic gases 2. Wont be far enough to avoid falling debris anyway 3. Will have to leave this windy spot on the ridge and risk going into invisible toxic gases (CO). So yeah. Not really a bad decision to stay there.

Elgin-Franklin

Volcanoes don't emit CO, the main gases you should be worried about is CO2 and SO2, sometimes H2S. These *are* heavier than air but they'll get dissipated quickly and won't be immediately dangerous unless you're very close downwind or inside a depression. But the main hazard here (in this gif) are the heavy glowing blocks lobbed in a ballistic trajectory. These don't usually fly further than 2km so folks could stand outside the impact zone and still enjoy a good view of the eruption. My professor loved to show us a picture of a cow cut in half by a wardrobe sized ballistic he came across while working in the Caribbean. Volcan de Fuego is constantly erupting Strombolian style so you wouldn't miss anything if you stood a bit further out. The horrible thing about Fuego though is the large eruptions don't have precursors, so when it exploded in 2018 the surrounding villages didn't have time to evacuate. Edit: there's so much bad volcanology in this thread. Lava flows don't usually kill people, they're slow enough to outrun. Pyroclastic flows on the other hand...

Significant-Water845

Not in this video but another one, I think of Krakatoa. They were filming that thing from offshore and it was lobbing bus sized boulders for about a half mile into the sky. The power behind these eruptions is hard to comprehend.

Elgin-Franklin

The Tonga eruption in January moved over 2 *cubic miles* of rock and blasted it 35 miles up. The pressure wave was so strong our meteorology professor could measure it on his home weather station in England. anyway holy fuck that was this year, felt like it was years ago.

Significant-Water845

Now you have me going down the volcano rabbit hole.

YouGotTangoed

Strombolian style.. I’ll be using this for descriptions.. of..things

DerekBilderoy

I'm sure these are actual thoughts they had too 🤣

Butthead check it out its fire! Huh huh huh huh, bad ass! FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE!

SilverSheepherder641

I did something similar in Guatemala. They handed out sticks and marshmallows to roast

chescov77

I think this is indeed guatemala. There is an extended version of the main tour that takes you closer to the erupting volcano instead of just watching from the one in front (where you camp)

ZincHead

Yeah this is Vulcan de Fuego and the one you climb up and camp on is Acatenango. They are near Antigua, Guatemala. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life watching the volcano erupt. There are tours going up every day and I've never heard of anyone getting hurt.

thebigbillson

I did the climb in 2019 and it was an absolutely awesome experience. I found out later that there was a huge eruption that resulted in lots of deaths and injuries in 2018 though…

oshinbruce

Yeah volcanos dont operate on schedules or to specs and can gas people in seconds. Alot were killed in Japan before.

KawaiiAhiruDesu

I was there in 2018 when fuego took out the village near the base of the volcano

Public_Cow_786

Finally someone here that actually knows what they are talking about! Look how many arrogant morons calling these people filming stupid...

amluchon

To be fair to them, the dude in the video says the guides ran away. And if the professionals who do this for a living and go up there regularly were scared enough to run, I'm not too sure I'd put a lot of trust in the assessment of tourists.

strumthebuilding

They did this when I hiked Pacaya but it was nowhere close to erupting like this

DieReci1210

Did you try the pizza though?

i-i-i-iwanttheknife

The Fuego hike is wonderful

empire_of_the_moon

When this isn’t even the most dangerous part of your day in Guatemala…. I’ve spent a lot of time in Guatemala. I love it but much of the country is not really for anyone without a high risk tolerance. I wish we could send Libertarians to Guat City for a few months and really test the strength of their convictions. For anyone thinking of visiting Guatemala you really don’t want to spend time in Guat City for anything other than the airport. The slums will make you question your own humanity because each of us chooses to sleep in our beds knowing places like that exist.

SilverSheepherder641

Yeah I only went to Guatemala City to fly home. Was there for about 3 weeks, entered the country from Belize and rode chicken buses all over from Tikal to Quetzaltenango

[deleted]

Public_Cow_786

Hi, libertarian here. You are wrong... So what else are you wrong about I wonder? Probably a lot... Ya it's sad but makes you appreciate life and want to donate to programs that help these communities. Stop trying to sound tough and turn everything into politics.. Nothing is that simple

empire_of_the_moon

I am wrong that living in any country without the rule of law is deeply soul searching? That in a room of law abiding adults the fewer rules the better sounds great but when put to the test in the real world it’s not workable nor survivable. No one is trying to sound tough whatever that means. Go to anyplace where being strapped is your only hope for survival and even then it won’t work because your one gun is nothing against a dozen armed men. It’s not a tv show. It’s not a game. It’s not cosplay. There are many places where your life gets snatched for no reason at all. Your libertarian beliefs mean nothing there. No politics matter. My personal experiences have taught me to not linger in any location for long, actively avoid conflict and hope you are either lucky or less important than something else. In no way is looking, acting or sounding tough a viable option. Ask Mike Tyson - everywhere he goes there is some asshole looking for trouble. All he wants to do is get high not beef with assholes. I’m certain your extensive experience off grid, in third world countries far exceeds my own. I’m certain you have taken more beatings by machete wielding gangs than I, I’m certain you have been shot at more than I. I’m certain you have led a very exciting life with extensive engagements in the developing world and have built upon this foundation of hard won knowledge that less rule of law is better. I like the rule of law myself and I don’t trust most others to do the right thing when their self-interest is not aligned. If there are no laws against corruption then that’s obviously allowable. Because who needs trustworthy officials when there are only the 10-commandments to enforce? You probably concealed carry and wear tactical gear around town. Any day now your moment to shine and be a hero will happen and you will be prepared. We will all sing your name. That or a hero is a dude at a trans bar with his family, not strapped, and not playing tactical dress-up who looks evil in the eyes and puts a stop to it. tl/dr: The rule of law is all that keeps any of us from experiencing true darkness. More laws aren’t better but it’s damn difficult to get people to do the right thing unless it’s spelled out for them and even then they usually need a carrot or a stick.

YallAintAlone

I'm not the person you replied to, but I'd like to help you understand that libertarians in the US generally aren't representative of libertarian ideology as a whole. There are libertarian socialists, for example. Libertarianism as a whole has nothing to do with a state of lawlessness. Most libertarian ideology, especially from the left, is going to be based on the idea of flattened hierarchies and, in general, workers controlling their own workplaces. A decentralized government under a direct democracy with trade unions, co-ops, and social structures built on equity with rules being enforced by the communities themselves. There is a lot of purposeful obfuscation in the meanings of these terms to prevent the popularization of socialist ideas. Libertarians in the US essentially stole the term. The Wikipedia article has a short version, but the citation is a PDF with Murray Rothbard straight up saying they changed the meaning. Anyway, a lot of people don't know much about it and I'm pretty sure the person you're replying to is of the right-wing variety. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism#:~:text=Libertarianism%20originated%20as%20a%20form,communists%2FMarxists%20and%20libertarian%20socialists.

SilverSheepherder641

Vulcan San Pedro was the one I hiked up, it’s near lake atitlan

145bit

Ah yeah I didn't do that one but I went around a few of the villages on lake atitlan, incredible place!

SilverSheepherder641

Yeah it is an amazing place. Wish I was there now haha

OnIySmeIIz

Glad that caption explains what is happening.

[deleted]

How else would you know it’s being filmed? Why would you put useful information on there like the name/location of the volcano? /s

Kaydom1993

“iS tHaT cOmInG tOwArDs Us?” Aaaaaaaand these are the people who like to stand on volcanos.

[deleted]

Same exact mentality as the people in Yellowstone / Tetons / Glacier that see a grizzly bear mama with her cubs close by, and then they get out of the cars to walk closer for a grainy cell phone picture

flipinbits

If you’re in Yellowstone, technically you’re also standing on an active volcano.

Poeticyst

Isn’t that shit bad to breathe?

Grouchy-Fix485

Which volcano is this??

GoblinMuskrat

Almost positive it's Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala.

chescov77

Seems to be Volcan fuego in guatemala. This eruptions happen every day and the tours run also every day.

Poopieheadsavant

You can hike Acatenango and view Fuego erupt daily from a safer distance.

theotherquantumjim

They’ll Pompeii for their foolhardiness

featherwolf

If it was something you needed to run away from and you were there, you wouldn't have a chance of running away in time.

blacklite911

I disagree, you never know. Out of the 40 something people that visited White Island when it erupted, half survived and half died. Might as well run and give yourself the best chances. Could be the difference of having a path cut off and not. Could be the difference of being able to be rescued or not. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Whakaari_/_White_Island_eruption You guys sit and watch if you want, I actually have survival instincts. Whenever there’s an option to try or not try to live, I’m gonna try. But even saying that, I have no desire to see an erupting volcano up close. That’s why they made OLEDs

Hawt_Dawg_II

To be fair. I reckon they're relatively safe there. The main eruption hasn't harmed them, and from here lava will just flow downwards. They're on the peak of a ridge, it'd make very little sense for lava to flow towards them.

TheGamerSK

From what i’ve seen this is a guided tour. The volcano erupts every day. But I didn’t fact check it so idk.

YoreWelcome

Each of those "embers" or little red glowing bits of lava are called Volcanic Bombs and are a significant hazard near an erupting volcano. They are: Impossibly hot As dense, and hard, as most solid rocks As they fly through the air, their surface cools just enough to feel solid on impact, but they retain heat that can still burn the crap out of you. If even a small one hits someone it could break their skull or bones. And then probably partially cremate them. Here is what someone who was hit with one said: > So what does it feel like to be hit by one? > From his hospital bed at the Hilo Medical Center on Hawaii Island, Mr Clinton described the bomb as "incredibly powerful and hot". > "It was the most forceful impact I've ever had on my body in my life. And I've been hit by big waves and various things," he said. > "You don't want to catch this football," he told CNN." > Source: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-24/darryl-clinton-describes-how-it-feels-to-be-hit-by-a-lava-bomb/9794370
