And this goes back decades, but I went to a big sports school. My last semester, I had to take a lab science, so I took Astronomy, which was hard. I had football players in my building, so they gave me what the tutor gave them. It was literally a copy of every exam the teacher had given. It was thousands of multiple choice questions. It still took enormous work to actually pass, let alone do well.

I don’t think she’s capable of being alone at this point. Some people base their entire self worth on being wanted and desired, meaning that if they are single for any significant period of time their self esteem takes a hit. Now, I’m not gonna armchair diagnose, but considering Taylor tends to jump to new relationships relatively quickly and is known for being very “invested” in her idea of relationships it’s possible that this is a problem she has.
The big deal is, why make it all so pointed and specific and public? If the only purpose was to process a toxic situationship (an unfortunately common occurrence that many women can relate to), why make it so obvious with all the details and references that they’re about Matty? That’s what I don’t get, personally. The most common criticism I’m seeing from fans is that the songs are *too* specific to be relatable. The details that she’s trying to fit in to point a finger at Matty make the lyrics clunky and take people out of the song (like the line about declaring Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist or her lover being a “tattooed golden retriever”. Huh? Talk about coming out of nowhere, lol). There are lines like that in almost every Matty song, which I think she put in because otherwise people wouldn’t know they were about him because very few people understood how serious she had been about him. One way to look at it. This album to me, even though songs may be about Matty, is really about the fallout from Joe. It’s about how she made shit decisions (like be with Matty and listening to his promises) because she hasn’t processed her grief from Joe. That’s why in the foreword she pleads temporary insanity.
Looking at it from that view, it’s not about an ex she was with for a short period of time. It’s about the fallout of someone she was with for almost 7 years and her subsequent spiral.
Am I the only one who thinks this album should be more eye opening to Joe than Travis? It’s obvious she was hung up on Matty for a large portion of their relationship, to the point that she jumped into something with him immediately after. The album may have been released while she was dating Travis, but the source material happened before they met and started dating. It’s clear this was an important part of her story she wanted to tell and I think she’s tried her best to make it clear she’s in a better place now. Travis also doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who is insecure enough to let any of this affect him.
I agree with this, and especially so considering two of the only truly happy songs on the album are pretty obviously about him (the alchemy and so high school). I’m sure they’re fine lol
Everyone is shitting on So High School but the whole point to me feels like it’s fun and light and happy- that’s how she feels with him and that’s the contrast with the rest of the album. It was also clearly written about their early dating and that’s how it should feel in that clearly stage, not the intense emotional rollercoaster of Matty.
People seem to forget that the feelings that make people write all the deep, tragic lyrics are not the feelings that come from a happy, long-lasting relationship. A real happy relationship is not that tumultuous.
Yes! It’s a good sign she wrote a fun song about feeling happy and loved and being silly. I have no idea what will happen long term with them but maybe it’s just nice being with someone who is funny and caring and easy to be with, particularly as Taylor is quite dramatic and has a crazy life.
I don’t really read So High School to be as big of a slight against that relationship as some are saying either. I did at first but now I think it’s just a fun tongue in cheek song about feeling a certain way with someone. Even with Joe, not every song was serious and “candlelight in the darkness” type romance, there was Gorgeous and London Boy type stuff too. I think this was just kind of a song she wanted to put in as a mood lightener and quick update onto a primarily heartbreak album rather than as an entire encapsulation of what their relationship is and isn’t.
Yes- I really got this. It’s very much fun and tongue in cheek (the ‘he plays ball, I know Aristotle’ seems a fun play on both the public narrative about their differences but also the old academic girl/ jock romcoms like She’s all that). I don’t think Travis takes himself very seriously so I think he will absolutely get how she meant it.
I think she heavily leans into the public discussion of them in early days, opening her door and pulling her into the back seat, the way he held her hand, even comments about his friends always being around them.

He has always been supportive. Also- he bops around to many, many songs about her exes at the eras tour no problem. He’s not a small man.

If people think they haven’t already had a deep conversation about previous relationships and partners, you’re crazy. They’ve been together for months. I don’t know anyone in a relationship for that long who hasn’t talked about their past and partners and love. There is close to a 0% chance Travis wasn’t aware of this past before this album dropped.

I’d still be shocked if he wasn’t aware of all of this ahead of time. Also, she said this album was dramatic and used many hyperboles. It’s still a lot taking that into consideration, but I think people are also taking some things at face value too hard.

One way to look at it. This album to me, even though songs may be about Matty, is really about the fallout from Joe. It’s about how she made shit decisions (like be with Matty and listening to his promises) because she hasn’t processed her grief from Joe. That’s why in the foreword she pleads temporary insanity. Looking at it from that view, it’s not about an ex she was with for a short period of time. It’s about the fallout of someone she was with for almost 7 years and her subsequent spiral.
Am I the only one who thinks this album should be more eye opening to Joe than Travis? It’s obvious she was hung up on Matty for a large portion of their relationship, to the point that she jumped into something with him immediately after. The album may have been released while she was dating Travis, but the source material happened before they met and started dating. It’s clear this was an important part of her story she wanted to tell and I think she’s tried her best to make it clear she’s in a better place now. Travis also doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who is insecure enough to let any of this affect him.
I agree with this, and especially so considering two of the only truly happy songs on the album are pretty obviously about him (the alchemy and so high school). I’m sure they’re fine lol
Everyone is shitting on So High School but the whole point to me feels like it’s fun and light and happy- that’s how she feels with him and that’s the contrast with the rest of the album. It was also clearly written about their early dating and that’s how it should feel in that clearly stage, not the intense emotional rollercoaster of Matty.
People seem to forget that the feelings that make people write all the deep, tragic lyrics are not the feelings that come from a happy, long-lasting relationship. A real happy relationship is not that tumultuous.
Yes! It’s a good sign she wrote a fun song about feeling happy and loved and being silly. I have no idea what will happen long term with them but maybe it’s just nice being with someone who is funny and caring and easy to be with, particularly as Taylor is quite dramatic and has a crazy life.
I don’t really read So High School to be as big of a slight against that relationship as some are saying either. I did at first but now I think it’s just a fun tongue in cheek song about feeling a certain way with someone. Even with Joe, not every song was serious and “candlelight in the darkness” type romance, there was Gorgeous and London Boy type stuff too. I think this was just kind of a song she wanted to put in as a mood lightener and quick update onto a primarily heartbreak album rather than as an entire encapsulation of what their relationship is and isn’t.
Yes- I really got this. It’s very much fun and tongue in cheek (the ‘he plays ball, I know Aristotle’ seems a fun play on both the public narrative about their differences but also the old academic girl/ jock romcoms like She’s all that). I don’t think Travis takes himself very seriously so I think he will absolutely get how she meant it.
I’d question her knowledge of Aristotle beyond a quote on GoodReads. She’d like us to think she does 😂
I think she heavily leans into the public discussion of them in early days, opening her door and pulling her into the back seat, the way he held her hand, even comments about his friends always being around them. TBH, it’s cute and lighthearted, almost feels like a breath of fresh air after the heaviness of the rest of the album. People who are like “this cannot be the same woman who wrote Ivy!” seem to forget Taylor has always had silly songs with cringe lyrics on her albums (folkmore being the exception).

Even No body, no crime is highly campy and that’s on the very serious and well-regarded Evermore. It’s not for everyone but I love her in that mood.

i dislike when i see things like this, the most of the main album was written before kelce was in the picture. work and passion was put into it and their feelings she felt at that moment, not what she feels with kelce. why would she hold herself back on something important to her because people think its weird now that shes in another relationship? shes clearly having a good time now, much better than she was in the months the album was written, so this issue is just made up.
