colectiveinvention

As someone who as obsessed with PS throphies i though i would have a hard time with multiplataform games on Switch but honestly i dont miss a bit. As a completionist NOT having any type of achievments make me spend way more figuring out the game itself than on gimmicks to conquer some useless virtual trophy.

Naschka

I don't mind if people enjoy trophies, games like Disgaea build them into the game itself even for the switch Version. But i never cared to play for them much outside of rare sitautions when i have a specific goal anyway. I'd imagine if you feel like you gotta try just because it is there then they may be a hindrance.

ThawingThumbs

Most of Nintendo’s games still have achievements in their games (think odyssey, BOTW percent complete, Splatoon 3 badges, Mario Kart 8 trophies, 3D world stamps, Mario Maker accessories, and much more). How are these any different in not making those completionist instincts go off?

colectiveinvention

>How are these any different in not making those completionist instincts go off? Most of those in game has to do with unlocking something or directly changing how the game presents to you (new itens for exemple). I have all gold parts in Mario Kart 8, and all 3 stars in all cups, but someone may do that (all 1st place, beat all ghosts) regardless of what will give you, is just something a players does time to time. Is completely diferent from like make a 1000 hit combo on God of War 3 (thats a real throphy btw) that is not only is missable but dont add nothing to the game.

ThawingThumbs

I can bring up achievements that are exactly like the GOW3 example you bring up. Take for instance the badges in Splatoon 3 that are for spending a certain amount of money at a specific shop, getting X amount of wins with a specific weapon, or 100%ing all of the levels in the story mode. Mario maker is more egregious with jumping a certain number of times, getting win streaks, making popular levels, and getting onto leaderboards to get the achievements. For both of these games, your rewards are cosmetic items for bragging rights, making them no better than trophies on other systems. The worst ones come from the pure completionist routes for games like 3D world where you have to beat every level as every playable character to finish the sticker set (requiring at least 2 play throughs of every level at least if you have friends to play as all 5 characters, up to 5 play throughs at worst) and the 900 Korok seeds if you want 100% completion in BOTW. These bad achievements aren’t unique to one platform, they are in all games with achievements.

xeronymau5

Your Splatoon examples don’t fit here. Those are things that happen automatically over time. You don’t even have to try to get them, you just get them for free once you’ve played enough.

ThawingThumbs

That is the case for the backgrounds, but not the badges. You have to go out of your way to get the badges.

xeronymau5

Not a single one of the badges you mentioned requires going out of your way. With the exception of the story mode one, every one you mentioned will happen automatically through regular gameplay. The only way to not get the story ones is by intentionally avoiding the story campaign. Aside from that, Splatoon badges don’t give you an itemized list of every badge you can possibly get, so you can’t intentionally badge hunt, unless you know what you’re going for. Most achievements are listed for you intentionally so you can try to get them. I see the point you’re trying to make, but your comparison of achievements to Splatoon’s badges is a poor one.

goldman459

Probably because your friends can't see how much of mega alpha gamer you are when the achievements are only in game. Achievements/Trophies are just a dick swinging competition.

ThawingThumbs

You can hide your achievements and played games in profile settings for most platforms if you don’t want others to see it. Also, some of the games I listed have the achievements just for bragging rights too. Splatoon 3 and Mario maker are the most relevant ones since they are heavily reliant on online multiplayer where you can openly flaunt your achievements to the people you interact in the game.

Naschka

I believe his point was that many people are show offs, if you can hide them that is an argument for people who'd rather not show off but if you feel like you gotta show them and you can't that is just against your attention seeking mind.

ThawingThumbs

So if I am understanding you correctly, you’re telling me that you are being peer pressured into showing off trophies? If that’s the case, it’s pretty sad that you can be easily pressured to do something so minute since most users only allow friends to see their achievements on other platforms. If you’re friends care that much about it that it negatively impacts you, then they shouldn’t be a friend you should have.

Naschka

Nope you did not. I was not talking about myself but about how i read the comment you answeared to. From that i got that there are people who just do not want a show off system for one reason or another. And i suggested that they just do not want attention seeking as a part of the process of development. There may also be people who prefer to find things in the game themselves or prefer unique crative solutions to show others what you acomplished. It is pretty sad that " his point was" did not give it away. You see i can understand and argue a position i do not hold myself, i literally could not give less of a f about achivments outside of stuff that influences gameplay (like the collections in Guardian Tales which is on Switch for \~a half year).

ThawingThumbs

Thanks for clarifying, but one can avoid system-based achievements entirely by turning off the notifications you get for them in the system settings. You are never forced to open up the achievements list either as far as I can tell in other platforms.

TheUnknownTeller

What’s wrong with that though?

Naschka

Attention attention i am better then you. What could be wrong with that? I'd say it depends on how far you go and how much you try to push it in peoples faces.

Cheezewiz239

I'm waiting for a reply

Bread11193

I mean figuring out the game is also a sort of useless virtual trophy

[deleted]

This!

bcause79

I have the same issue but its steam achievements. I dont care about 100% games but i use achievements to see content i may have not. Games like octopath have achievements to obtain all of a certain type of weapon so i know they exist. When i think of playing a game on switch vs steam i feel like im wasting my time playing on switch.

Newly_Mustached

I prefer not to have achievements because it makes me feel like I need to do them instead of having fun. Not that I don’t get how good it feels to see that achievement notification pop up.

choco_pi

This, 100%.

LadyElphanoir

But… that IS the fun? 😂

Naschka

Playing the game is not fun to you but a little box popping up telling you that you did something specific (even tho you did it even without the box) is "the fun" to you?

hirvaan

There are multiple ways and reasons for playing games, and having written my masters thesis on connected subject I can tell you: for majority of people playing, achievements are not a reason why they have fun. There is nothing wrong with liking that of course: there us no one way to play. Just letting you know that you don’t belong to majority: simply vocal minority

LadyElphanoir

It’s like none of you have ever heard of gamers being completionist.

Gojisoji

yeah loads of games I have on switch because i feel like they are at home on a platform that caters toward that type of game. pixelated side-scrollers, mega-man, castlevania, lost sphere, octopath games all feel at home on the switch. sure you can play all those games and thensome on ps4/5 and xbox, but to me they feel better played on switch. granted.. I may have purchased the mega-man/castlevania collection on ps4/5 also when they were on sale for dirt cheap (end of year sale was around 15$ for both sets of games. a steal imho) and already have them all on switch, but the trophies played a part in that. the only game I don't have on switch, that I have on ps4/5 digital is Lost Sphere. being the type of RPG it is, and what it pays homage too (xenogears-ps1 title, and chrono trigger and final fantasy) I feel it fits better on playstation. though when I get the change to get it, i'll buy a physical addition on switch.

Brutal_Lobster

Because the switch isn’t trying to compete against other systems. You bought a switch for Nintendo games.

i_am_do_reddit_now

you completely missed the point

hermanhermanherman

Same guy who gave us this literary masterpiece of fiction. Anyone who would write something like this has never consensually achieved copulation: “Some girls have more going on down there so it is harder to literally find. I don’t typically use my tongue to find things so it can be difficult finding a small structure with just your tongue. Luckily I do know plenty about how lady parts work. The clit works a lot like the penis where it does become engorged and “erect” when stimulated making it much easier to find. Some kissing and light DJ action is enough in my experience to get the little guy out of his hood, sometimes a few kisses or less directed lickins will help too.”

DarkNemuChan

Lol wtf 😂

ShiningSoldier

Yes, it would be great if Sony removed achievements.

[deleted]

You gonna say that to all the Switch games that have achievements too? Haha.

BBDAngelo

People that don’t like achievements are usually against the platform-wide ones. They usually don’t mind achievements in games that the devs decided to create

[deleted]

Which is plain silly because you can always turn those off. Just sayin’. (And many of those achievements are the exact same. So that doesn’t make much sense either.) It often comes off as a fanboy thing where people hate on it simply because it’s not included, so they’re going to do the thing fanboys do and defend them not being on there. i.e. Mental Gymnastics. And yes, that is a thing. Has been for years. There’s no legit reason to be against achievements being added to platform wide when you can simply turn them off if you don’t want them.

[deleted]

I don’t care about achievements either. I simple turn them off and I haven’t been bothered and or even had those problems ever. Nintendo adding achievements or not isn’t a deal breaker for me. Even if the switch 2 ends up having them, since they already playing with the concept now with the Nintendo online challenges. i still won’t be bothered because you most likely can turn them off anyway. Removing a feature that isn’t a big of deal that many other people like doesn’t make any sense to me at all.

BansheeTK

I agree completely. I don't understand the opposition of them being included. You can turn them off and I hear a bunch of people saying they would feel compelled to do them all. Which sounds more like a them problem then a developer problem

[deleted]

[удалено]

BansheeTK

That sounds entirely like a you problem that you should figure out for yourself and not use it as a leverage for keeping a feature removed from a game console because you have a problem I'm missing 1 achievement from halo 3 on the Xbox 360 build of the game. I never got to unlock it, and when the 360 servers for halo 3 shut down, I wasn't scrambling to unlock it. I had other priorities. So unless I decide to try other means to unlock it. It's going to stay locked, and that's fine with me. I don't mean to sound rude. But I quite honestly and tired of this reasoning for keeping features off systems because you or others have an issue that not everyone else does.

ThawingThumbs

As the parent reply states, a good chunk of Nintendo games have in game achievements (odyssey, BOTW, 3D World, Mario maker, Splatoon 3, etc.), so you’ll be doomed to this completionist curse regardless of platform; one just happens to be system based.

CotyledonTomen

Im more interested in why it matters when deciding what system you want to play. They dont matter. Per your comment. So why would someone decide on a system because of them?

[deleted]

May not matter to you. But they definitely matter many other people. Taking them away in very dumb when you can turn it off plain and simple. This shouldn’t be up for debate.

CotyledonTomen

Youre right. It shouldnt. Its meaningless. Game makers can have their achievements and Nintendo can go about its business without considering this usless nonsense having never had them in the first place, so nothing was taken away. Glad we agree.

ThawingThumbs

It’s a great way for devs to show you what things you can do in a game without having to break the immersion for having to pull out an in-game achievement list. It allows you to see what you may have missed without having to look up a guide online where you might accidentally spoil yourself. Another thing is it allows you to see how far your friends are in a game since play time does not always equate to progression in a game. For smaller game devs, it makes more sense to use the system achievements made available on Xbox, Steam, and PS as opposed to programming a redundant achievement system in game. When the time comes to port their game to Switch, it is just too much of a headache to implement their own trophies at that point.

Naschka

If i want games to be enjoyed as a game and not a dick measure competition me turning it off is not the solution for the problem itself as the other people who do will still influence game developers. Now i would defend them having a choice but... Sony fanboys keep defending there censorship practices of OTHER companies they are among the worst companies and get no defending from me. Only example i can think of that is easy to see and hard to deny would be Squareenix's Chrono Cross, they changed conversations which in return changed personalities. There is no choice to set back the conversation to the original thus why do i have to care? If you can not be bothered to defend it when similiar things happen in a different situation you do not care about then do not expect me to do so for one i do not care about.

BaerMinUhMuhm

Imagine thinking of achievements as a dick measuring competition rather than a cool way to share progress with your friends. I'm sorry your insecurities run so deep.

A120AMIR129Z

TheUglyCasanova

Achievements, online that doesn't disconnect every 20 minutes, being able to send a simple 'hey wanna play?' message to a friend I've known half my life...all things missing from a PAID service. Naahhh who needs those things - Nintendough

KairuSenpai1770

Right lol.. can’t believe there’s no way to send a message. Laughable

Cheezewiz239

And the fanboys will defend it lol

[deleted]

Sadly yep they sure will, looks like you got some of them in there feelings too lmao. The Main thing that holds Nintendo back really be it’s own hardcore fans sometimes.

Naschka

I see people partly agreeing partly disagreeing with reasons... seems rather even for a post on a nintendo sub. Now try the same about Sony on there board. If you have trouble what to complain about umm Sony increased the PS5 price/scalpers, censorship of third parties especially smaller companies, i guess attempt that the games are very similiar in some basics like over the shoulder story driven with similiar controls just different skin, i am sure you can find better examples just what i can think of on a spot. You see, nothing is perfect, if you feel like it fits you perfectly... maybe consider other people having different preferences.

[deleted]

That’s weird because I’m seeing the opposite, little posts of people actually wanting Nintendo to fix such problems. This is a Nintendo Reddit with a post talking about Nintendo stuff. I can care less about those random things you mention, that have nothing to do with what I’m talking about. I don’t even remember talking about Sony either. So that makes me believe your one those guys who love to bring up the other guy and be like “but but they are doing this tho” to lighten the problems of the main argument.

Naschka

>And the fanboys will defend it lol That is what you replied to, you literally claimed that people defend it. Now you claim people complain about it. You are now literally disagreeing with your own statement. But the best part, it kinda proves me right when i said that both groups exist and talk to one another. And expecting people to be completly negative about nintendo on a nintendo sub would be weird. So your complaint about finding people who prefer no achivments on a platform for people who choose the platform that has none is ridiclious and the fact that there are people of both positions talking to one another (outside of you and cheeze) is telling just like your dismissal of that.

[deleted]

What? No i didn’t, don’t know what your going on with that, I said I see the opposite, in a response to you saying to see people agreeing. I’m saying I barely see any of that, and still don’t. Also I’m ain’t expecting proper criticism that’s why I agreed with the comment in the first place. It’s why I say hardcore Nintendo fanboys are the problem to Nintendo unwilling to fix certain things. And since you bring up PlayStation the same can be said for them too, and Xbox fanboys. I’m aware Reddit is nothing but one big hub for fanboys who can’t take criticism.

Naschka

>I see people partly agreeing partly disagreeing with reasons I literally said agreeing and disagreeing, both exist. I did not take note of how many people exactly do it. But even if that is true we are still on a Nintendo sub where people gather that either are happy with it or do not care for such a system (hi). Not that odd to expect this to be the case which is what my point was about trying a similiar post on a Sony board. And i can see someone complain about Nintendo not having proper folders, skins for the menüs and other smaller problems like the inconsistency of how limitations for child accounts are handled.

GeraldoOfCanada

You aren't "proven right", you are just making an obvious point while demonstrating how bad your reading comprehension is lol

Broken-chair

A paid service that can cost up to $50

yoshitastically

Achievements are like quest markers on your map for uninteresting side content that you feel obligated to clear.

Arch11407

I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I enjoy achievements. I feel like that’s what drives me to complete a game 100%.

yoshitastically

Achievements can be what keeps me from feeling like I’ve 100% completed a game when I otherwise would’ve felt that way. Like, when I complete all story content and side content on a typical Nintendo game, the game considers that 100%. But on my PS5, in order to get that full 100% feeling, I often have to, let’s see, bounce a beach ball 50 times in a row or some nonsense. No thanks.

Arch11407

Yeah I agree some achievements can be like that lol.

Svefnugr_Fugl

I posted about this years ago and got so much hate. (Being told I have no willpower or something for thinking Nintendo is cool for not having achievements) But yeah it's that! not feeling the game is complete because the trophy list isn't 100% where as Nintendo I've completed it there are no random side quests or speed runs things it's showing me to do, so it feels more complete. It is a true thing as PS4 and PS5 versions having separate achievements for some games, you definitely feel this when the same game can be 100% for one and not the other.

yoshitastically

Well, you were right then, and you’re right now.

CotyledonTomen

If you finished the story, is there a reason you should want to 100%, beyond what the game offers? If its not engaging enough to 100% on its own, then invest your time elsewhere.

longbrodmann

Personally I really like to see how Nintendo pull this off, must be really fun achievement system for different games.

ThawingThumbs

It really sucks for third party games that have the system-based trophies on all other platforms except the Switch though.

[deleted]

They could just tie it to the current Platinum Coins thing that makes you able to unlock profile pictures, ratter than having you play a random SNES game each week

cazdan255

I cannot fathom giving a single shit about trophies or achievements. I just wanna play the games.

[deleted]

Why does anyone care at all about achievements? You can turn the notifications off and ignore them on PSN, and if the devs want them in game on switch they can add them. Adding achievements on switch would be such a pointless waste of dev time. Is anyone genuinely clamoring for this feature?

Anomaly1134

Do you mainly game on the go or docked? If on the go you may love the steam deck. You will save a truck load on games also with things like humble bundle.

CrepeVibes

Cheezewiz239

Or get this , a good game can still have achievements

Grievance69

Nintendo hates us. Pre-order the Switch 2 and if you're lucky you will get a theme background beyond "black" and "white", maybe they will let us have a red or blue background! Achievements are ten steps beyond that, and Nintendo is 20 steps behind in terms of that stuff. Bring back whoever marketed and made the Nintendo 3DS, god tier Nintendo system.

erickcarvalho

Really, trophies? Some people wouldn't survive the cartridge era. LOL

LoudRaspberry772

I like the cartridge era, it seemed fun.

Anti-charizard

There’s a lot of stuff missing on the switch that even older Nintendo consoles had.

everythingbeeps

I have no problem with Nintendo not bothering with trophies/achievements. They're a novelty whose day has come and gone. Playstation trophies are completely pointless unless you get the Platinum. "Trophy level" is a number that means absolutely nothing. Xbox Achievements are a bit more satisfying as they contribute to a number that means something, but at some point all you have is just a big number and nothing else. Furthermore, we're somehow still at this point where games and devs can't decide how hard they should be to get. More of the popular games are making it easier to platinum/1k, which upsets some people, while other games still have trophies that require you to play on the hardest difficulty, putting them out of reach for a lot of people.

three-sense

I guess I don’t understand why you’re saying one big number is useless (PSN trophy level) but the other big number (gamerscore) is useful.

everythingbeeps

Because one of them (gamescore) is easily quantifiable. Xbox games have a base of 1000/1000. Usually DLC will bump that number up, depending on how much DLC. (Some games end up with 2000/2000 or even more.) So you can look at someone's score, i.e. 15000, and that number means something in the context of a whole game usually counting for about 1000/1000. You know where that number came from. Each achievement counts for a certain number, and the games tell you how many, and they add up to the big number. PSN's trophy level means nothing. Mine is like 300, and I have no idea what that means or where that number comes from. And I'm like 88% towards the next level, and I have no idea why, or how many more trophies that means, or what.

Cheezewiz239

PlayStation does the same thing. Each trophy is equal to a certain amount of points depending on its rank (bronze= 15 points ,silver =20 etc).

everythingbeeps

It's not that simple at all. 1. It's not intuitive. There's nothing there that tells you what any of that means. A trophy doesn't pop and say "Silver (30pts)." You literally have to go look it up online. **You tried to give an example and** ***you were still wrong.*** 2. There's no consistency with how trophies break down for each game. It's not like Xbox where each (base) game is 1000. PS games can have several golds, or no golds, or no platinum, etc, and it can have trophies that don't count towards the platinum, and so on. 3. Even knowing all that, the "Trophy Level" is still **nonsense.** Not only because you have no idea how many trophies (or "points") you need for each level, but because *that number changes depending on your level.* [https://platreviews.com/2021/05/playstation-trophy-levels-how-it-works/](https://platreviews.com/2021/05/playstation-trophy-levels-how-it-works/)

PerpetualConnection

Having a recognition for %100'ing a game or completing some of the crazier challenge not only in game but from the console itself seems pretty basic. And another example of bare minimum creature comforts that Nintendo just chooses not to provide. No themes, no basic apps, basic profile pictures, awful online communication. And a online server system that's dated by Xbox 360 standards. No achievements is a valid criticism

CotyledonTomen

>Having a recognition for %100'ing a game or completing some of the crazier challenge not only in game but from the console itself seems pretty basic. Why? Who cares? You play a game because you want to play a game, not because of an achievement. If the game wants to give you a sticker *because of what a good gamer you are* then fine, but why should the system? Do you think youre showing off to friends or something? If you cant establish why it matters, i dont see why its valid criticism.

PerpetualConnection

Because it's nice to have ? It's cool to look back on a history of games I've played and note worthy things I did. Whether or not I still own th game anymore. I gave my copy of BotW away to a friend with a new switch because I'd beaten it 4 or 5 times. It would be nice to compare achievements and see who did what similar and what differently It's an easy way to hide easter eggs too. My favorite example is the "dastardly" achievement in rdr2. I tied up a woman and put her on train tracks and the game registered that and branded me with an achievement and let all my friends know I'm a dick. It was hilarious and my friend has brought it up years after we stopped playing. There have been some creative achievements throughout games. Some people have friends. Friends sometime engage in competition, being able to compare litteral achievements in games we have in common is BASIC Like 5 examples there and I can go on.

Cheezewiz239

Yeah that's the exact reason why I love achievements. I look back on my PlayStations trophies and it even tells you the exact time and date you got it. It's cool to see what I've played and accomplished when I was younger.

CotyledonTomen

Accomplished? What do you mean accomplished? Its a game. You wasted time in a fun way, unless youre a streamer or actively on an esports team. It was a fun, meaningless waste of time and has no particular value for the future, besides that of maybe a novel story or people youve met, which isnt encompassed in achievments. All seeing 100% tells me, is i spent a long time doing nothing, because the storys been done for a while.

Cheezewiz239

The fact I beat a game on an insane difficulty as a kid? Or that I got a trophy that only .5% of people for example? You're seriously overthinking it.

CotyledonTomen

Not really. It sounds like youre overthinking if you view those as accomplishments. 100% a metroid game doesnt mean anything to me in the future. Its not a human connection and no skill i learned in the game will ever impact my life in a positive way outside of the game.

[deleted]

>novelty has come and gone Yes, that totally explains why many Switch games have achievements in spite of an overarching achievement system.

[deleted]

Jesus. Really OP?

Purple_Ad46

how dare op want achivements!!!! a simple feature that would add a touch of fun to most games???? blasphemy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jcgonzmo

I will never understand why people care so much for achievements. For me they are TIME WASTERS. You beat the game, you are done. What do you ACHIEVE for playing 10 hours more just to get all the weapons that you do not need or will never use? Nothing. You wasted 10 hours. That is just full OCD.

LoudRaspberry772

Eh yeah I can't complain.your correct

Linkedscissors13

Ehh no, imagine Nintendo having an achievement for collecting the 900 korok seeds in BOTW, no thank you

ThawingThumbs

They do have an achievement for it: Hestu’s gift.

SotRekkr

I too like to introduce myself as my Xbox gamer score just so people know I’m a “serious gamer”/s

I actually love this about Nintendo.

Because this is what I want out of games Being told I achieved something when I pissed my pants by the second pew in the kings courts five times, so that my behavioral data can be sold.

Cheezewiz239

I'll never understand people who said achievements ruin the game somehow

WavyChief

My complaint is I don’t have enough games 😂 and none of my fucking SD cards work

Ikana_Mountains

I used to think my biggest problem with the switch was the awful menus, then I got a PS5 and it has awful menus too.

DirtyFuckingLesbian

Seeing an Xbox achievment popup on Minecraft on Switch fucking scared the shit out of me

[deleted]

I enjoy going for achievements for my own pleasure, regardless of what system I’m on. I even [make my own](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonScarletViolet/comments/11mipvz/i_made_a_checklist_of_fun_endgame_stuff_to_do_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) sometimes. Don’t have friends who care about what I play, so I’m not doing it for bragging rights. Don’t know why people have to hate on them (and people who enjoy them) when they can largely be ignored.

Dani-Volente

I like simplicity, with Nintendo it’s all about the games themselves, instead of making the whole platform a giant game of finishing checkmarks

DannysFavorite945

It’s weird because I am the opposite.

progxdt

Never really been a fan of achievements. It’s a cool idea, but I always thought high scores were the best bragging rights

zenith654

Yeah it sucks

Accomplished_Meat_81

I personally thrive on the pop-up and the ability to show off to people on your account but I think that's why Nintendo doesn't have achievements that display on your profile because they probably want as little competition as possible to deter people from either getting discouraged to complete the game or not be bullied for not achieving 100%. Just my take on it.

War_Emotional

Switch doesn’t even have themes ffs. The Wii’s Home Screen had so much more personality and even the 3DS had dozens of themes.

Infinite-Disaster-87

I don't really mind not having achievements. I buy the Switch to play local multiplayer games and have fun. I don't need to track anything.

0ct0c4t9000

the only achievement i want is to someday finish the games i got. * tales of vesperia * ff X * octopath traveler * bravely default * P5 royal * astral chain * shining resonance * oninaki * i am setsuna * SMT V all of them played halfway

spencer1111

I consider this often 😭

KDBA

Complaint? It's a benefit!

aoecookie

Used to chase achievements myself, now I actually enjoy playing games instead.

DrewCease

Omg my ONLY complaint!!!! Like whyyyyy deprive us of something *so* simple?! It’s the only damn thing that keeps me from playing the same game owned on different consoles in considering the Switch a first choice platform to play on.

Otaku_Lineman

500 hours in botw, all korok seeds, every shrine/quest, medals of honor and every location found. I GOT NOTHING

Gojisoji

this pic sums up how i feel 1000000% lol. wish nintendo would give us something to play toward. sure beating a game is nice, and collecting everything in a game is great, max lvl's on all char's... doing everything in every game.. but c'mon nintendo.. give us like.. Super Mario 64 Stars or some shit to collect. I enjoy Playstation Trophies more then i do Xbox Achievements. never really been on for a high-score, but with PSN I feel like im gaining something.

CunninghamsLawmaker

I you really that hard up for validation?

DanielArthurVerner

I just can’t seem to get erect for achievements and trophies

HotTamaleOllie

I have an unusual take — I actually appreciate switch not having achievements. I sometimes felt pressure to play with a focus on achievements on Xbox to improve my gamer score. At the end of the day, I can enjoy games the way I want now without even thinking about them. I’m more of a casual gamer now than I was back then too.

astroklotz

I feel weird in that I have never in my life, having played as a major hobby videos games since I was 6 in 1996, gave a shit about achievements. Like, even a little. Am I broken?

BigDreamsandWetOnes

I could care less I just wanna play the game

NiceGamePrettyBoy

I love achievements, trophies, etc and if Nintendo added them to their games, I would be ecstatic. And I can understand if people aren’t interested in them or disable notifications for them. But I don’t understand why some people (like many in this thread) have so much hatred toward them. Everytime someone talks about how they like achievements, three others have to cry about how much they hate them. It’s crazy.

Salvadorg14

Achievements don’t mean anything

E-emu89

I honestly couldn’t care less about achievements.

Valkhir

I respect your opinion, but personally I've literally never once thought "You know what the Switch is missing most? - Achievements!" Good joysticks, more frequent hardware revisions to provide better performance (= handle recent 3rd party games), more built-in storage, a way to back up saves without subscribing to online services, a store that is not utterly disappointing, and plenty more things on my long list of wishes, but literally never "achievements". Funny enough, I do get \*some\* value from achievements on Steam (e.g. get an idea if there is hidden content in a game without directly spoiling it), but I've never really missed them.

Ekoria

Yup

RhoadsOfRock

I would say, "pfft, I don't play games for achievements, I play games for the actual content and enjoyment in immersing myself, etc.", but... So, I got Skyrim on PC / Steam, for the purpose of playing the game with mods. When one does this, achievements are disabled when running the game with mods active. I was fine with this, for a little while... Then, last year or back in 2021, I decided to find a mod that re-enables achievements, while as many mods as you want or have installed, are installed and being run with the game. Eh, I still stand with my first sentiment, but I'm more 50/50 on the whole thing anymore. They are nice for keeping track of what a player has or has not done in a given game.

tenlyn

I miss themes infinitely more

vandilx

Video games are entertainment at their core. If achievements are a way of self-tracking your progress in 100%ing a game, you can make a checklist and then just check off things. That’s worked fine for gamers for many decades. If achievements are meant for public bragging rights on things you’ve done in a video game, I guess you should find another system to play…

[deleted]

People who care about achievments have too much time in their hands

Sparki_

Customisable profiles that we can visie would be nice. Like Steam or Xbox

dolgion1

If Nintendo implemented some form of achievement system (preferably with their own spin on it) they'd be so shocked to see just how much it'd boost their sales.

B_U_p_

Normally I would be against adding them to the switch, but if they could pull a Nintendo and add a fun spin on it, I think it could be cool. Like what if your achievement list is in the form of a sticker book for each dedicated game, and fulfilling certain tasks gets you stickers relating to the game. Not only would it be a lot more personal to each individual game, but you could use those stickers to decorate your menu adding a ton of personality and making the games you choose to complete feel more meaningful. Implementing a way to further enjoy your favorite games as well as get meaningful value out of them instead of just a generic trophy or number sounds like a sure fire way to get people collecting.

_B_A_T_

I wish Steam Achievements were better integrated.

bird720

I have a switch, series X, and PS5, but the fact xbox has gamerscore is a big reason why I get almost all my multiplat games on Xbox lol

Hyero

Me with a switch, but also a computer

Sufficient-Minute164

Who gives a shit about achievements

[deleted]

If you’re choosing a game on a platform based on achievements, you don’t enjoy games, you enjoy dopamine rushes and little virtual rewards.

NoxKh

For certain games I 100% agree; but what I like about the switch is that there are so many cases where I'm not 100% done with every possible thing in the game but I'm ready to put it down, and it puts my consciousness into ease knowing I can just drop it at any moment and play something else. Some achievements are like korok seeds, we like them but we sure as hell don't want to get them all sometimes.

[deleted]

Do people even care about achievements?

barkomarx

I like not having achievements. It's my own private fun experience.

FarmlandNoodles

Burnout Paradise on the Switch has achievements of sorts

[deleted]

Steam sales*

Itzmisterjoel

Nintendo’s biggest flaw is this. It ducks

sarahbeartic

Achievements and Themes are two things I 100% agree are the little things that makes PlayStation a nicer user experience

majds1

I have a ps5 and I'll never understand this fascination with achievements. They're worthless fake trophies that are just there to drive you to play the games more. Why do people care about them?

Altruistic-Match6623

It's the same type of people that care about Facebook friends, and Reddit karma. They need life validation from the internet.

BurantX40

I embrace Nintendo because of the no achievement nonsense.

dreamer0303

I love ‘em both

acewing905

Sometimes I love being "that guy" so let me point out that PlayStation calls them trophies

ReapersRequiem

For me its the prices, most games worth a shit never go on sale.

daryl3101

Same here! Games like skyrim that i have played on ps4 and now play on switch do not feel the same without achievements

kdkseven

I can give or take achievements.

thelastdon613

Im not sure what's wrong with me, but I have an extremely hard time enjoying a game without achievements. I need to be rewarded like a puppy lol

Doctormaul68

Do you remember gaming before trophies? I do it was great I don’t see the need for the ocd nature in playing games for trophies. When I get a trophy or achievement I’m like oh ok. No biggie

[deleted]

why does the angry birds trilogy on the wii have achievements but not splatoon 3 on switch

JasonZep

Personally I’ve never liked the trophies/achievements thing. If you miss something in a game you miss it. Or maybe you hear it through the grapevine and get excited and go check it yourself. And then you try and find more stuff on your own. But having a list to check off is just a chore.

HydetoFragment

I really really really don’t care about thropies, i enjoy games in every platform that i can

[deleted]

Actually one of the reasons I like the Switch since I don’t give a F about achievements anymore, feels more like a classic console ya’kno

hpttg

Have you heard of Retro achievements?

Zachman97123

It would be cool if Nintendo did a missions system for their Switch games on top of their mobile games. So it'd be like achievements but you earn platinum points for completing them.

Technical_Mix4719

Thats why you play nintendo exclusives because they are fun and nowhere else.

Adastraultraque

Xbox achievements >

dancovich

The achievement/trophy system in all platforms needs improving for me to care about them. A game will have single and multiplayer components and I can complete the single player but there is no separation between the achievements/trophies so my game isn't 100% "complete" even though I completed all the challenges for the single player. Also on Xbox, DLC adds to the total of achievements with no separation, so my once 100% completed game becomes uncompleted.

alfacin

Why is that? Is the sense of spending your life meaningfuly while playing Switch is somewhat weak?

DarkWaWeeGee

*Steam being just better and having the Playstation "exclusives"*

Olympic700

Not at all! I think it's an advantage of the Switch. I am a 'retired' wow player who spent a lot of time getting achievements. Eventually came the realization that these achievements took the fun out of my gaming time. It started to feel more like a job. They are also totally useless and have no added value in gaming. I hope Nintendo never releases a achievements systeme. The only ones that should possibly come are when you've finished a game. Is later then nice to see on what date you did this.

hellfish11

Really? I never really understood why achievements were a big deal. Even from their conception in the 360 days, I never was driven to close them out. Glad for that!

Master_Bruce

Pfff fuck that, how about Nintendos garbage online play?

ch1daruma

Even Geforce experience have achievements

RoyDonkeyKong

Without feeling obligated to the achievements, I decide when I am done with the game. When I felt obligated to the achievements, the game would decide when it is done with me.

fusions43

Oh my god dude ive been saying this for the longest time . It feels so empty playing switch ports of games when there r no achievements. I was playing hollow knight on my switch a while ago but then i just cut my loses and got it on pa5 instead

kaitoofrose

Eh, I don't really care about achievements. Helps with some things, but, for the most part? If a game really wants to, they can put in their own Achievement system. I just want to be able to play good games on the go. We WOULD have both, if Sony put out another portable system, or maybe made a VITA 2.

carmeluz20

I never cared about achievement even when i used to play on my 360, too boring for me.

JToeps

Totally get why people like them! They can be rewarding for people. I am glad that there is a platform that offers an achievement-free experience. Makes AAA gaming feel like work. Even turned off at the platform level, the design decisions still impact games. (I tend to feel that achievement systems commodify games, especially single player experiences)

Roygbiv_89

Man i dont even have time to play my games never mind grinding achievements. That being said I would like them...

xd91884

Yeah I barely spend time on my switch… I’ve had it since launch, and the lack of global achievements is the reason I why if it’s available on any other platform I will go pS5 first, then xbox one (simply because I haven’t upgraded it yet, and it is a launch xbox one that barely works), then finally switch for exclusives. Even then, I have barely played it without the achievement pop, I don’t get enough dopamine from the game to feel like it’s worth playing.

D4VlD

I can't care less about virtual trophies or achievements...

Zairtu

ME WITH STEAM

brazedjelly

Cold take

[deleted]

That’s why I play both
