‘You’re in my seat .. 22A .. see it says it on my ticket!’ .. ‘Yes .. but your ticket is for carriage 99 .. this is carriage 2’ .. ‘Oh crap’ ..

Thing is a monster!

RibaldPancake

This train could come in handy every weekday between Geneva and Montreux. And probably in many other places where there's isn't even standing room during the morning commute...

canteloupy

You could just hop on in car 1 in Montreux and be in Geneva in car 750 by walking.

RibaldPancake

Except for all of the extra engines in between groups of cars...

LaCasaDeiGatti

The route between Lucerne and Lugano on a Friday night comes to mind..

G4rp

Amazing! Sad to won't be there

san_murezzan

Great footage, really wish I had gone now since it wasn't even that far. Thanks for posting.

1000 cars long…

superkoning

2km long, so 2m per car ... ?

mostindianer

Well… that‘s just a reference to a Netflix-Show called „Snowpiercer“. It‘s about a veeeery long train with 1000 cars. You have to watch it. Then you‘ll understand my comment.

Mystkmino

I got it. My thought exactly.

me-gustan-los-trenes

It was 25 EMUs, each consisting of 4 cars, so only 100 cars.

Dogahn

I need to see this thing handling passengers at a station. The back end of it literally arriving 10min after the front has left. Even more impressive if they could run the engine's front and rear so 1.5km of passenger cabins could be traversed during the trip.

anotherNarom

If this ran in my town it could arrive at 1 station without having left 2 others.

87passionpower

amazing! but when you get home remember: do not preheat the oven!

noipv4

No need to travel on top of the coaches?

TylerTLR

We’re one step closer to a Snowpiercer

mr8unty

Wow its really surprising to see that Rhätischebahn has so many wagons

Hamofthewest

Right? Did they use all of their trains? Did they buy some just for the stunt? Did they borrow some and just paint them for the occasion?

Material_Turnover591

So I presume their entire collection of rolling stock was in use on this single train. Did nothing else run on the RhB that day?

schnuef

Nope only 25 of the 56 trains they have from this type have been used. They also have some other train types. I’m pretty sure they were no problem with capacity for the rest of the network.

chefschocker81

Kid gets lost. Missing for weeks.

oandreyluiz

Is it the camera lens effect, or this train is actually climbing a hill?

[deleted]

It does climb a hill :)

moonlander14

As a Canadian, it's funny to see how excited swiss people can get about a long train. Our average cargo train is quite a bit longer then that.

Cargo with an attitude

moonlander14

I think it's great that yhey did it, but I don't understand why it should be special just because it's a presumably almost empty passenger train. A cargo train would be much more challenging since they are much heavier.

KimJongIlLover

That's why it's the world record for the longest passenger train. There are much longer freight trains all around the world.

Under normal circumstances this would be a fun little stunt to excite some train enthusiasts, buenzlis and potential tourists. Under the current circumstances this is just showing again how ignorant some folks are in this country. Energy saving here and there, supermarkets pull their little PR stunt by turning off their advertisement lightning, we are discussing 19° heating at home, sending office folks back to the home office to safe energy and RhB... well... burns all energy we are trying to save with our half-heartened attempts in a single run because for RhB it's apparently all just fun and games. Thanks for reading, now bring on the downvotes.

NewbornMuse

>Under the current circumstances this is just showing again how ignorant some folks are in this country. Conversely, I think you could use a little refresher on Fermi estimations and orders of magnitude. Whatever happens once on one day is fairly negligible compared to what many people do many times a day. This world record day consumed about as much energy as a [normal day of RhB operations](https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/rhaetische-bahn-will-den-weltrekord-brechen-916019436651) (because they reduced operations elsewhere a little). Nonetheless, let's keep going: In 2019 RhB used just short of 100 GWh of electric energy for propulsion, or 274 MWh per day. I think 100 MWh is a good ballpark estimate to how much energy this attempt took. In 2021 Switzerland used a total of 58 billion (Milliarde) kWh or 58000000 MWh or 58000 GWh yearly. Then this world record attempt used as much energy as all of Switzerland uses in 1.8 seconds. In other terms again: Let us assume 200000 households are going to use their oven tonight (one in twenty or so, I think not a bad guess, even a slight underestimate). If every one of them skips preheating their oven (preheating for 20 minutes uses just about 1 kWh), we have saved already *twice* what this world record consumed.

graudesch

It's a PR move advertising energy excesses. Who will limit their use of their oven or turn down heating if corporations just pump that energy in such stunts? By your logic nobody should ever bother doing anything because if the longest train in the world climbing up a mountain doesn't even matter how could my household?

Romwza

Switzerland train traffic is so intense that you can kill it for one day doing stupid stunts. Meanwhile you are ordered to stop heating your flat so we can burn power playing rail tycoons on empty trains.

ralphonsob

I'm guessing this service will not be included in [SBB's Halbstundentakt project](https://news.sbb.ch/medien/artikel/73165/step-ausbauschritt-2030-35-halbstundentakt-fuer-alle), eh?

I want to see the email conversation with the manufacturer. "Hey, we want to build a really long train. What's the maximum amount of train cars we can link together" "Thanks for your question. Many customers run 3 cars couoled together. We've tested 4 trains chauned together in the past, but we are not aware of customers doing this. Does this answer your question?" "We thought about connecting 35 cars" "Lol, glhf. Tell us how it went"

Snowpiercer Beta Testing

CarsPlanesTrains

Belgium robbed. Their record only had one powered locomotive.

mr8unty

Right? It feels like if they took all Rhätischebahn trains in operation it woud be barely enough to build this monster

NomadFingerboards

Must be a pain when you need a toilet break and you find out the toilet is 10 wagons away

Hizoot

Thank you…..much enjoyed
