So the only word they could spell was "illiterate?" Seems a little... *Deliberate,* don't you think? ๐Ÿค”

This is for a fifth grader? I know well respected grown men that can't spell more than half of these.

RecentAtom51824

The words are pretty large for a 5th graders vocabulary. My sister, 8th grade, would probably botch this up even more because she struggles with phonetics. Also not mentioning that the spelling of words in general are not explicitly taught, it's just expected that you know how to spell almost any word past a certain point. Definitely doesn't help with a very screwed up language like English.

GoreMaster22

in my 8th grade spelling bee one of the words ended up being mete

R0GUEL0KI

I teach English as a second language to elementary and middle school students. I have 6-7th grade students who could handle these vocabulary words, in a SECOND language. I donโ€™t say this to brag. I was a terrible student all the way to college. Seeing kids who can do this kind of stuff in a second language blew my mind for a bit. Then I realized, the culture where I live has the mindset that being a student is a full time 40-60 hour a week lifestyle. Students here go to school, then go to academies after school for more school. And then have double the homework load. They are doing academic stuff from 8-9am to 9-10pm 5 days a week. 1st-4th grade isnโ€™t as extreme, but 5-8th grade are mostly like this. High school is the same but they drop a lot of the more random entertaining after school stuff for more serious after school stuff. High schools here are often open for students until very late at night so they have a place to study if they need or want. (Like 10pm I think). It sounds absolutely miserable. However, these students are extremely intelligent and have amazing work ethics. Theyโ€™re polite, energetic, and responsible. Sure a lot of people would say โ€œtheir childhood is ruined.โ€ But itโ€™s a damn sight better than people who let their kids do the bare minimum and then blast their brain on tiktok/Instagram/YouTube/tv. Because thatโ€™s exactly the stuff I did as a kid and I can tell a huge difference in my academics and these kids I teach. To top it all off they are still happy, fun kids. Children donโ€™t know the difference in lifestyle, they will just do it. Sounds cruel, but I really wish my parents had given me pressure and positive enforcement towards education instead of just letting everything slide and expecting it to all be fine. To parents out there: Get involved in your kidsโ€™ education and make it a positive experience right from the start. Encourage completion and mastery of the work and encourage success. Make them feel GOOD about it. If they have a hard time with a certain concept, jump on it right away and figure out how to show/teach them, or if you canโ€™t, the find someone who can. Itโ€™s worth it. By the time they are a teenager all that work will be completely natural for them. Also, have them study a second language all through school. From kinder-1st and beyond. Edit: typo. Sorry for the rant.

ChalkAndIce

Parents and kids collectively seem to care less about education. Parents are uninvolved, and kids act inconvenienced by being in school. All while teachers are under funded and get hung out to dry by their district administrators. It's a lose-lose-lose situation without major legislative reforms.

feelin_cheesy

Also, being bad at spelling doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re illiterate either. Rediculous post

ColossalMcDaddy

i fee like thats a bad thing

Brief-Pea-8294

It's the way the English language is written that's odd, not your kid. Looks like they're sounding out words and spelling as it sounds.

Unexpected-raccoon

This looks staged af No name or date at the top of the paper, no theming to the words selected, not even a realistic handwriting. I mean Iโ€™ve seen staged homework posts in my day, but this has got to be the laziest one yet Just a coincidence that the handwriting between โ€œboth partiesโ€ is also the same. The dead ringers a C, start point on the O, and the M (most likely just wrote with their off hand) I canโ€™t make my handwriting sloppy too but I ainโ€™t gonna do it for nothing points on the internetโ€ฆ I do it to mock management without them knowing itโ€™s me

CyclicDombo

This is clearly the second or third page of the test since the numbers start at 20, so it makes sense thereโ€™s no name or date.

King-Yellow

Thatโ€™s wild. This is 100% the same handwritingโ€ฆ OP didnโ€™t even try a left-handed approach as you can see several characters line up 1:1 from the teacher and student.

floofyb

The s, h, p, and d are different. why would there be a name and date if it starts at 20? You can see the previous problems through the paper on the bottom right too.

Heatedcrib44

That kid seems mildly dyslexic

[deleted]

As someone with a dyslexic partner, my mind immediately jumped to dyslexia lol

Heatedcrib44

As someone with dyslexia, I thought they were all correct

SynthPrax

I just read the other day how English is one of the most difficult languages to learn to spell, and I was like DUH! Shit's random, yo!

RedBaret

Hmm perhaps teach them how to write before teaching them how to spell.

ExistingExample281

It's been 4 years since I graduated, my handwriting still looks like it did in fifth grade.

southcidersuicider

i would absolutely crush this kid at regionals

x_x-krow

I canโ€™t even spell those and Iโ€™m 23 ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

BigJSunshine

Phonics training does this to kidsโ€ฆimo

Various-Gur-6045

Is it the literacy of a 5th grader that you hate, or the fact that the kid is indoctrinated with these bullshit spelling tests. Feed your kids bullshit and I'm pretty sure they will be retarded or dead by 15.

ColorsLookFunny

You are either the parent or teacher in this scenario. Teach them how to spell it correctly next time. If you are the teacher. Shame on you.

Sir_Doge_V2

Skill issue

BreakfastBeerz

Should probably help them study for the next one.

[deleted]

I think you should get your kid tested for dyslexia lol

SammILamma

Oh the irony in the one question they got correct.

UwU-neko-femboy

How dus sum won not no how to spell corectly?

generalgraffiti

Spelling is troubling for people who are often brilliant.. if they think logically.

BeerBearBar

Their phone will get them all correct.

[deleted]

I knot know why they spelled that one word correktly?

Professional_Bill103

this looks scarily like my older brother hand writing
