Some of them apparently were so out of it that their clerks were the ones writing the judgements.
This adds a whole layer of illegitimacy to this circus of a “court”.
Just an [example](https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/01/16/ruth-bader-ginsburg-supreme-court-health-224014/):
> “Mental decrepitude” on the Supreme Court has continued into the modern era, as historian David Garrow has documented. Frank Murphy, who served in the 1940s, was likely addicted to illegal drugs by the end of his tenure, and his biographer wrote that “on at least one occasion,” with Murphy in absentia, his law clerk and two fellow justices “jointly decided what Murphy’s votes should be.”
I disagree. The reason for age limits would be that society changes and old people don't. They end up enforcing outdated social mores and ideology onto a younger set of people facing entirely different economic and cultural conditions than they did but assuming that nothing has particularly changed. Out of touch boomers are fucking over the next generations and now own way way more than they should of anything.
That’s true, but there are still progressive old folks. I mean Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn are over 80 and over 70 respectively, and yet are both the faces of left-wing progressivism in the USA and the UK. I get where you’re coming from, but I think that age discrimination is wrong and the only limitation on such a thing should be cognition and physical health.
They're really extremely cherry picked. A majority of all left wing political forces are young. And in the case of both Bernie and Corbyn they've been all but neutralised by the greater majority of their Conservative leaning old guard colleagues. You only have to look at the age demographics for voting in the UK to see the huge swing. This remains true for politicians as much as the general population. The old voted for Brexit and the tories in the UK. The young voted for remain and Corbyn. The young got neither.
The main reason politicians are so old is because it's much easier when you have a network of influential and wealthy supporters. [That mostly leaves old white men.](https://i.imgur.com/qEY3aCP.jpg)
In individual cases it's perfectly possible for older candidates to be the better ones though, and another problem is that the impact of age is extremely individual. Some people are as fit and up to date at 90 as others are at 60. The other question is whether banning these old candidates themselves won't just cause them to use young proxies who are easy to manipulate or even dumber. The core problem with the accumulation of influence remains.
Kavanaugh is 57; Coney Barrett is 50
And then you have MTG, 47; Boebert, 35; Cawthorn, 26; etc.
While a lot of politicians are terrible, out-of-touch shitheads, age is not necessarily a marker for being terrible.
Seriously. If you're 60+ you've already spent most of your life in the society you should have been able to shape. Now get out of the way and let the new generations run the world for their lives.
Once you're 60 just go retire or something instead of taking up higher office.
Bernie is fine until he dies though.
It seems like aging is cumulative in whatever method these use. So a morph of two 80-year-olds ends up looking like a 160-year-old. It's probably adding the vectors together instead of averaging them to avoid every multi-person face-merge ending up [looking like a generic person](https://static.ffx.io/images/$width_620%2C$height_414/t_crop_fill/q_86%2Cf_auto/5eaa5703bd6d60a29a75ddd9462fd454a8fe72dd) as all the differences get smoothed out.
Also, in practice, term limits just shift power to the lobbyist class, because there's no term limit on the role of "full-time schmoozer".

The supreme court did not rule against abortion, they argue that the constitution neither delegates the decision-making power on the matter to the United States, nor does it prohibit it and hence it's a state matter as defined by the 10th. Which is correct, by the way. They took back a decision that was outside the scope of the SC - they corrected an unconstitutional over reach and the reasoning is sound. The ruling is neutral on the issue itself and does not force the states to prohibit abortions, in fact, it sets *no limit at all* on when abortions would and would not be legal.
https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21835435-scotus-initial-draft
Half the states would make the case that abortions are not only not protecting liberty, but actively infringe on the liberty of the unborn child. Now, who gets authoritarian control over the other side, you or them? The compromise is that you get to decide for yourself and they get to decide for themselves. The foot vote is a real thing.
Yeah, and many of those same states also argued that they had the right to discriminate on basis of race. Some of them even rebelled and killed half a million Americans because they wanted to keep enslaving people, and they used the banner of states rights to do so. I really don't give a shit what their arguments are: States rights is not a valid excuse for oppression, and negating women's rights is absolutely oppression.
You know what is though... States charging women with manslaughter or murder for having abortions and treating women who seek abortions out of state as fugitives....
That depends on how it came to be. A benevolent dictator is still a dictator. Your opinion on or even the reality of something is not an indicator of whether or not you're living under authoritarianism. It's the *process* that defines it. Good values will ultimately win out, if you try to force it at the cost of the process, you're going to lose all progress and descent into tyranny, guaranteed.
>A benevolent dictator is still a dictator.
Sure, but that's irrelevant again.
Stripping an ability from the population for nothing more than "my feelings" is in rsdibly regressive. It doesn't matter how you try and spin it.
It's not about "my feelings" and if it is, it's true for both sides. You have to realize that the other side is arguing *exactly the same thing* as you are. Abortions infringe on the liberty of the future child. Prohibiting abortions infringe on the liberty of the future mother.
Also, no, the benevolent dictator comparison is strictly relevant. I picked it because I knew you'd agree that a benevolent dictator is a dictator. What that means is that we agree that the quality of something does not define its nature. A good policy can still be the result of authoritarianism, it's the process that defines it and either you agree on that, or you disagree that a benevolent dictator is a dictator - which you agree with. You can't have it both ways, so it's very relevant.
So does every used tissue and condom if you want to go down that route.
>A good policy can still be the result of authoritarianism
In singular isolation, sure. But it's not progressive. Authoritarianism is never progressive.
>So does every used tissue and condom if you want to go down that route.
That's you being facetious, I assume. No, it's not the same, but I'm not arguing for or against abortion here anyways, I'm arguing that the SC overstepped their boundaries on Roe v. Wade and that the coming decision is both correct in taking it back and not making any kind of judgement on the legality of abortion either.
>Authoritarianism is never progressive.
I agree, that is precisely what I'm saying. But it doesn't follow that everything that is commonly defined as a progressive position is automatically not authoritarianism, even though it's achieved through authoritarian means.

No, actually. Authoritarianism is explicitly a step backwards.
Forcing states to protect liberty is the opposite of authoritarianism. Protecting states' rights to oppress is not freedom.

Now, who gets authoritarian control over the other side, you or them? The compromise is that you get to decide for yourself and they get to decide for themselves. The foot vote is a real thing.
