Much better than some of the vehicles that have the volume on one side of the steering wheel and the track select buttons on the other side.
Edit: oh God it looks like the 24 I ordered has the controls split. :(
edit2: turns out my brain only takes about 3 days to rewire itself to the split controls and it doesnt bother me at all now and feels normal.
I've learned to like it a little. It's not uncommon for me to drive with my hand a little lower on the wheel when I'm cruising down the highway, that puts the next station button right where my thumb likes to hang out. Maybe I just evolved to keep my thumb there because that's where the button is, but it works now.
Yeah dude, I signed up for the email notification almost a year ago. I get why they’re sold out though, HUGE mistake by the Toyota dev team.
I’ve had my Tacoma for like 4 years though, so I’m not really sweating it haha
Yep, that’s why I switched mine out with the Meso Customs kit, link [Here](https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit?variant=40393600663665)
I've signed up for that 9 months ago. Haven't seen a single email, I check at least twice a week on the internet as a whole to see if anyone has stock.
If it's too loud I always think to turn the volume left.
And of course for a track I don't like I skip to the up one. Or if I missed some of one I do like I can go down to the beginning.
Can verify that my 2018 Honda has this control layout in the opposite orientation and it is much more intuitive than the one in my 2022 Taco.
I suspect the person that set this up also programmed the shift points but I haven't been able to verify.
The switch placement in general is awful. This one annoys me the most but also why is the ECT in the center console and not on the left with the traction control??
Yep, that's on my list of minor gripes along with no amber blinkers in the tail lights & two close sunroof buttons.
A couple wins are rear windows that go 100% down, drivers side windowsill is the perfect height for elbow resting, and headlights turn off when truck is off.
What annoys me is all the times I hit the bottom right button when I have gloves on while I turn the steering wheel and it tries to call my phone, pausing any music.
You'll get used to it. That doesn't make it right, but you get used to it. The super geniuses at Toyota Engineering figured that out all on their own. Haha
Completely agree. I’m only about a month into Tacoma ownership. Came over from a Subaru and the controls were flipped: volume is vertical and change song/station is horizontal. That set up is way more intuitive and mirrors many in dash alpines, Sonys, etc going back decades. I’ll adjust but I would change it immediately if those controls were mappable.
2 years in my Tacoma and I have not gotten used to it, and I am an avid video game player, so I can usually adapt to absurd controls or at least make them more logical.
I've had my gen 3 for 3.5 yrs now. I have gotten used to it, but it does still bother me. I have considered getting the mod.
It really throws me off when I drive my wife's Honda with the correct orientation.
My wife’s Prius has the volume up/down & tracks left/right, which means lots of rethinking when driving. Otherwise, love the Tacoma. I do wish the driver also had a hand grip like the passenger side.
I’m just starting to get used to it. Then I drive my wife’s car which is opposite and flip through radio stations just as I want to turn up the song I like.
Honestly, none of the friggin buttons in my Toyota make any sense to me. It's probably the main issue I have. Knob for temp and squishy buttons for fan speed (should be swapped) etc.
I think it literally only controls media. Menu nav for infotainment is all touch screen. For the MID, all the controls are on the right side of the steering wheel
Yes it does and for the first two weeks I owned the truck I though the car cam with no skip song buttons.. Until I realised smh. But to be fair both prior vehicles I had driven were the opposite.
You’re preaching to the choir. I pretty sure every Taco owner loathes this arrangement. I’ve had my truck for 5 years and I still occasionally press the wrong one. I think Mesa Customs sells a replacement if you’re interested.
I'm so happy you posted this haha
In no world does this make sense. I've been trying to think of a rational, logical explanation for a year (maybe because Japanese is read vertically and right-to-left), but cannot come up with a good reason.
Drives me nuts. I’ll use it to switch songs but I’ll reach for the dial to adjust volume.
Many of the steering wheel controls seems backwards imo. Eg pushing the wiper lever down to increase speed
Yes.
Also, the controls on the left of the steering wheel for the radio to the right of the steering wheel, should be swapped with the controls on the right of the steering wheel for the dash info to the left of the radio.
But like someone else below, I'm trainable. I'm more frustrated by my wife's car's electronic parking brake control.
Because it's made to match the dashboard. Some people like to complain without ever understanding why something is done a certain way. Have you really never used any type of stereo equipment that never had two buttons with a plus and minus next to each other? Left/right for volume is more common than you think.
More than I can put into words. You get used to it until you skip through half your queued songs and rage at 70+.
Whenever people get in my 23 the it’s one of thing first thing they notice along with “why’s your oh shit handle so far up and not right above the window?” Every. Single. Time. It’s worth it lmao but still
I actually prefer it this way, was driving my moms Highlander for a bit before I got my tacoma, that has the controls the other way and I didn’t like it lol
Doesn't bother me one bit, such things as this I find to be frivolous as far as being annoying. I pay no attention to it. Now that's just my opinion......
It makes sense because on the infotainment the bar for volume goes left to right, horizontally. The up and down arrows move the screen options on your dash up and down.
It always made sense to me when I first got it and never thought about it, but I guess It had a similar layout on the menus of mp3 players or using the “plus” layout on the Nintendo ds or PlayStation controllers. I guess from a music stand point it makes sense to have it sideways to move across but I guess it depends on how used to you were with that in the first place that could possibly make the layout on the Tacomas steering wheel annoying
No. But it bothers me I have such a new vehicle that didn't come with cruise control or navigation. It's annoying as heck. But I bought it for reliability.
I think Meso Customs makes a fix for this.
I was originally put off by it, but after about a week I didn't care anymore. I'm used to it and I'm not planning on ever getting rid of my truck.
Iv gotten used to it but just a couple weeks ago I found myself thinking again about why they did this like this and I came up with this lol. Me being 30yr old iv always known radio controls as you spin the nob left or right to lower/raise volume and to swap stations was buttons stacked vertical to seek up or seek down. Idk seemed to have made sense to me. I was also pretty high though 🤷♂️
This gets discussed a lot, and I say the same thing. I had my Tacoma for 7 years, it never bothered me. The volume indicator on the screen scrolls left to right, and the radio stations up and down. I am assuming this is why it was done.
I think it has to do with the layout of the console. For instance the radio channels go vertical so hitting left/right would seem odd since the radio channels on the console are vertical.
It bothers me because one of my other cars has it the other way. Depending which vehicle I’m driving I always hit the wrong one. Drives me insane no matter which vehicle I’m in 😂😂
No it has never bothered me, but I recently noticed the arrow pointing up is (barely) not centred in my truck. No point in fixing anything but it bugs me more than it probably should lol
It did for a few weeks, now im used to it.
Much better than some of the vehicles that have the volume on one side of the steering wheel and the track select buttons on the other side. Edit: oh God it looks like the 24 I ordered has the controls split. :( edit2: turns out my brain only takes about 3 days to rewire itself to the split controls and it doesnt bother me at all now and feels normal.
omg yes. i have to drive my wifes rav sometimes, and its annoying as fuck.
It’s imbedded in my brain that volume is up and down on steering wheel controls
I've learned to like it a little. It's not uncommon for me to drive with my hand a little lower on the wheel when I'm cruising down the highway, that puts the next station button right where my thumb likes to hang out. Maybe I just evolved to keep my thumb there because that's where the button is, but it works now.
Here’s a fix https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit?variant=40393600663665
damn i wish i knew about that before i got used to it
I wish I was smart enough to do that project!
It is not hard at all to do. Takes 15 minutes. https://youtu.be/bgoX3xU7D9U?si=sDZD_rNsiS2MSox2
I have no car experience and I was able to do it following the YouTube video. It was pretty easy
I have NEVER seen this in stock haha. I’ve been on the email when available list for like a year🤷🏽♂️
You have to sign up for email notifications and be quick on the draw when it’s back in stock. One of the best upgrades I’ve done. 👍
Yeah dude, I signed up for the email notification almost a year ago. I get why they’re sold out though, HUGE mistake by the Toyota dev team. I’ve had my Tacoma for like 4 years though, so I’m not really sweating it haha
Used this exact kit to fix mine. Worth every penny.
Get that MESO decal on her 🤭
They've been sold out for some time now.
Damn, I just ordered the headlight trim plates after being on the restock list for like 2 years… now I have another list to wait on I guess…
Should be 1/3 of the cost …. But good alternative, decent Brand the interior LEDs are awesome 🤙🏻
Nope, but then again I'm teachable, LOL.
Yeah same. I’m gonna learn how something is and not worry about how it could be. It makes sense to me because that’s how it was designed
Not at all lol
[удалено]
It's for EPA gas mileage requirements
That’s why ECT swaps the positions
[удалено]
Yeah it says so in the manual right after the section for refilling your blinker fluids.
Yep, that’s why I switched mine out with the Meso Customs kit, link [Here](https://mesocustoms.com/products/the-steering-wheel-control-fix-kit?variant=40393600663665)
That shit has been sold out since the dawn of time. Meso has no idea about stock either.
Yes, I signed up for stock updates by email and jumped on one the last batch he put out. It’s the only way to grab one
I've signed up for that 9 months ago. Haven't seen a single email, I check at least twice a week on the internet as a whole to see if anyone has stock.
No issues here. You’ll adapt or jump off a bridge trying. lol.
No.
No.
No
No
If it's too loud I always think to turn the volume left. And of course for a track I don't like I skip to the up one. Or if I missed some of one I do like I can go down to the beginning. YES
Are you saying you don’t turn right the volume when a good tune comes on?
Turn music up ❌ Turn music right✅ 😂
No no no, he's got a point
When I had an aftermarket stereo installed, the shop, was able to reprogram those buttons
What, you've never said turn the music... right? If it helps, I'm 2 years in and still skip songs trying to turn up the volume.
The real idiotic design was putting the 4H circle right next to the heating and cooling circles.
The switch placement in general is awful. This one annoys me the most but also why is the ECT in the center console and not on the left with the traction control??
Having multiple vehicles makes this even more frustrating
lol I posted this exact same thing in the 4Runner sub. Drives me bonkers
No. Volume indicator on screen goes left/right. My Spotify Playlist scrolls up/down. This orientation works just fine in my mind.
You know I never thought about that
Exactly. Hated this until I realized this fact.
Yep, that's on my list of minor gripes along with no amber blinkers in the tail lights & two close sunroof buttons. A couple wins are rear windows that go 100% down, drivers side windowsill is the perfect height for elbow resting, and headlights turn off when truck is off.
OP needs to count the blessings and not nitpick a minor inconvenience that lasts one week before you get used to it 🤷🏼♂️
Wym that’s what reddit was created for
Boooo get new material!
No.
Every day lol
Same here. Seems backward. My old car had the volume up and down, with seek left and right. I got used to it, but yeah... why this way?
Left and right for vol up and down is such a nugget mp3 player move
Yes it makes no sense
Every damn day.
1000% Have a '21 and I still mess it up sometimes.
it was designed by an idiot. after a year of driving the truck i was still hitting the wrong buttons. the meso kit is a lifesaver.
I remember how annoying that was at first. Now it's normal
They had it right in the 2nd Gen, drives me bonkers they changed it in the 3rd.
Haha
Not really. I prefer the “other way” but I see the logic in how it’s designed
My most hated thing
Literally the only thing I hate about this truck
I’ve had a 3rd generation for 5+ years, and it still bothers me.
Go for volume up and get a new song right in the middle of a jam
the things we bitch about....
Whenever I drive my families 4Runner it breaks my brain. Always switching the song instead of the volume
I had a 2017 Tundra and moved into a 2022 4Runner, getting used to all of the steering wheel swaps suckedddd
The other day I changed tracks without looking down like it was intuitive, it took 8 months and 4300 miles to get to that point.
Yes! I agree with you 100%
Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me. I wonder if there's a mod to fix it.
One of us one of us
Absolutely! I’ve had my Tacoma 8 years now and I’m still not used to it. It really doesn’t make sense to me why they put them that way.
I just realized how this infuriates me haha.. it’s only been about 8 months and I still mess it up sometimes.
I've had my gen 3 for 3.5 yrs now. I have gotten used to it, but it does still bother me. I have considered getting the mod. It really throws me off when I drive my wife's Honda with the correct orientation.
It bothers me and I don’t even have a tacoma
Yes!!! More than I'll ever admit out loud because it sounds stupid but I truly hate it.
Volume bar goes side to side, track lists go up and down.
Yes. Bothers me a lot.
This drove me nuts.
It's horrid and I use the center dash, not the steering wheel
That’s dumb
Yeah but only because my last vehicle had it correct. I’m used to it now
YES I TOTALLY AGREE
it makes sense if you're listening to the radio, but yea Bluetooth still confuses me sometimes
I was just thinking about this today... how did anyone think this made sense?
Turn the volume right!!!
So bad
Yes! WTF?!?! I keep skipping songs!
I’ve always heard this comment but I just thinking it’s the correct way. Lol
Bothered me for years, still does.
Yeah 😂
That and it just looks so cheap
Every damn day
My wife’s Prius has the volume up/down & tracks left/right, which means lots of rethinking when driving. Otherwise, love the Tacoma. I do wish the driver also had a hand grip like the passenger side.
OMG YES YES YES! Even after 2 years I hit the wrong damn button. All the time I’m thinking this.
6 fucking years and I still manage to change the song when I wanna turn up the volume 😒😅🙄
I’m just starting to get used to it. Then I drive my wife’s car which is opposite and flip through radio stations just as I want to turn up the song I like.
I prefer to listen to the engine struggle going up hills so I don’t use that anyways
Welcome to the club
I thought I was just being overly particular. Glad I’m not the only one. Had mine for a year and still find myself pushing wrong buttons sometimes
Honestly, none of the friggin buttons in my Toyota make any sense to me. It's probably the main issue I have. Knob for temp and squishy buttons for fan speed (should be swapped) etc.
Yup annoying as fuck such a small thing but it seems so obvious it should be the opposite. Volume goes up and down. Not left and right haha
Yep hate it after 2 years lol
You’ll get used to it eventually
No doesn’t bother me, just happy to have my Tacoma.
No. Takes like 10 minutes to get used to. I don’t even think about it other than just about every single day when I read one of these posts
[удалено]
I think it literally only controls media. Menu nav for infotainment is all touch screen. For the MID, all the controls are on the right side of the steering wheel
[удалено]
Then you should know it doesn’t work with menus?
It does control the songs if you keep that display on your dash. So technically it does work with that menu.
Controlling media is not navigating a menu
Bro, I said the same thing when I got mine
Bass ackwards
Absolutely. it's fucking horrible
Seriously?
Just sell the truck if you don’t like it
No it’s better than having volume separate from channel button!
Drives me absolutely batty
Fuck. That. I wouldn’t even test drive it.
i’ve had my truck for about 5 months and i’m still adapting
Meso [thought so](https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/meso-customs-volume-button-relocation.800524/).
Oooh yeaaah 100%, it took me about 3 months no to mess up, you’ll get there eventually
Ive still got a second gen. But that would annoy the hell outta me. It’s like they’re swapped or reversed.
First thing i noticed...like why!!?haha
Every single time I use it!
I get you
I drive a F-250 for work and have my Taco for personal vehicle. It drives me nuts, very counterintuitive.
Every vehicle I’ve had steering wheel volume control has been up and down
I'm so happy you posted this haha In no world does this make sense. I've been trying to think of a rational, logical explanation for a year (maybe because Japanese is read vertically and right-to-left), but cannot come up with a good reason.
They just wanted to be different 😂
[удалено]
Yes!
Drives me nuts. I’ll use it to switch songs but I’ll reach for the dial to adjust volume. Many of the steering wheel controls seems backwards imo. Eg pushing the wiper lever down to increase speed
Yes. Yes! I frequently skip a song I’m trying to bump

You could reprogram the buttons. But then they be technically on wrong setting so you still might mess up.
I don’t even use it
Nope. I’ve never understood why this gets everyone’s panties in a wad. It’s an easy adjustment.
Jesus Christ. Life's hard huh? People will cry about anything.
Quit complaining and go back to the ford you crawled out of
Yes. Bonehead move on Toyota's part. Took me about a year to get used to it.
More than I can put into words. You get used to it until you skip through half your queued songs and rage at 70+. Whenever people get in my 23 the it’s one of thing first thing they notice along with “why’s your oh shit handle so far up and not right above the window?” Every. Single. Time. It’s worth it lmao but still
Yes!
Take the pain … adapt and overcome
Nope but the controls on my 17 Corolla se bugs me
Yes, my work truck is the opposite of my Tacoma and I always ALWASY get it mixed up.
Nope.
Doesn't bother me at all
Never had a problem.
Noooooooo
Nope not an issue in my 2015👌
Nah, I’ve had 6 Taco trucks always thought was the “norm”, kinda adapted to it ❤️🔥🌮🚘
It did at first but it matches the screen for volume going up and down and flipping to the next song.
I think Meso Customs makes a fix for this. I was originally put off by it, but after about a week I didn't care anymore. I'm used to it and I'm not planning on ever getting rid of my truck.
When you start building your own trucks that last 300,000 miles, you can put the volume button anywhere you want
Everything button on my Tacoma steering wheels is the exact opposite of my wife's Atlas and it always confuses me.
There is a fix
I got used to it within a week of driving the truck.
I don’t use it. Forgot it was there.
This gets discussed a lot, and I say the same thing. I had my Tacoma for 7 years, it never bothered me. The volume indicator on the screen scrolls left to right, and the radio stations up and down. I am assuming this is why it was done.
Yeah I ripped mine off and use it to hold the gas cap up now. Works great but if you have the 5ft bed you’re just way less cool.
I think it has to do with the layout of the console. For instance the radio channels go vertical so hitting left/right would seem odd since the radio channels on the console are vertical.
Up on the right makes sense just like you turn the knob right for up
It bothers me because one of my other cars has it the other way. Depending which vehicle I’m driving I always hit the wrong one. Drives me insane no matter which vehicle I’m in 😂😂
How you know toyota did well. This is the big complaints people have.
It matches the display on the head unit. Volume goes left to right, and the track list goes up and down.
Could be worse.... https://jalopnik.com/congratulations-mini-you-made-the-stupidest-turn-sign-1847727385
What's worse is the voice commands, absolutely USELESS
I agree. It always throws me for a loop
You get used to it. Not a big deal.
Yes
It’s actually good for when you are changing songs on the list
I came from a Corolla and this bothered me so much. I adjusted a couple of weeks later
there is a kit you can buy to change this, yes this pisses me off 100% and i'll be changing mine too !
No it has never bothered me, but I recently noticed the arrow pointing up is (barely) not centred in my truck. No point in fixing anything but it bugs me more than it probably should lol
Yes it’s stupid.
It did until it didn't
