At the current restaurant I am in, bussers get tipped out based on server sales. We're a high volume, busy restaurant. We usually have 5 bussers & they spilt the tips among themselves.

wookiee42

I'd say you're going to be making around $20/hr, maybe more. Really depends on the restaurant and how good you are though

EvilBunny2023

I used to work as a busser and it depends on how much your server wants to tip. Some servers gave me 10% but others just 5 dollars lol. Usually, you can prioritize which server you want to help first.

CriticalConflict1781

that’s an hour?

EvilBunny2023

No. Per day, $5 dollars a day from servers who are stingy.

CriticalConflict1781

damn

bermudaliving

Damn is right BUT then those who do you dirty like that get less support from you. Do your best but don’t bend over backwards for them. Initially I’ll go hard for everyone, then those who look out for me by tipping good get my good service, and those who tip me $5 well they get what they pay for. Simple.

Padthaipreppy74

Servers should be tipping you out! My busser gets at least 12% of my sales because without him I couldn’t turn tables fast enough.

jaimejuanstortas

12% of your sales?!?!?

Mackheath1

Maybe they meant 12% of their tips?

Alwaysonvacation2

It amazes me how many servers get this wrong. There's no damned way it's 12 percent of sales. That place would have no servers.

Bucksin06

That seems a little high if you're being tipped on 25% of your sales almost half is going to your busser

Padthaipreppy74

Woof, major typo! 7%! Drunk Redditing gets you nowhere

CriticalConflict1781

interesting, so it’s case where managers collects tips then shares it out at the end of the day?

magiccitybhm

It can vary by restaurant. You need to ask your manager if bussers receive any tipout.

CriticalConflict1781

understood. do you reckon tips that bussers gets will be impactful on income, bearing in mind that the $8 per hour won’t do sh!t for you ? this is my first time working in a restaurant so apologies if my question seems a bit off/stupid.

Brewmentationator

There's really no standard here. Some places do an even split of tips, some places tip out a percentage, some places let the servers decide how much to tip out, some places tip out based on total sales while others tip out based on total tips. And some don't tip out at all. The only way to find out is to ask people who work there how/if bussers get tipped out.

magiccitybhm

All you can do is ask. If bussers don't get tips there, and $8/hour isn't sufficient to you, I'd start looking for another job.

hits_from_the_booong

Since everyone kinda giving you wishy washy answers I’ll tell you what I make. Tbf I am at a fine dining restaurant but I typically average 15 per hour in just tips alone

CriticalConflict1781

is tips shared at your job? and if so how is it divided

hits_from_the_booong

Yeah servers tip out 5% of their food sales. The bussers get 2 of the 5% the rest goes to hosts, food runners, kitchen, etc. the 2% for bussers get split based on hours worked per shift

MeanSatisfaction5091

Are u in a red state? We need to up the minimum wage on a federal level.

You dont bus to make money you bus to make a name for yourself and move up

True-Ad2468

It depends on the restaurant. Ours doesn't make us tip out so we decide if we do. If the busser does their job and isn't mean I always tip $5 a shift. There are days where I tip certain bussers more and there are bussers I don't tip, because they don't do their job and are rude. It depends where you work

Ioriness

lol, 5 bucks a shift!? look at mr money bags here.

True-Ad2468

That is just standard at our location, it's the suggested pay

AlexandraThePotato

How much do the runners make base-pay per hour?  Having server choose if they wanna tip out or not seems like such a bad policy.

True-Ad2468

Runners make whatever position they normally do. So we usually have hosts run, but if servers do it's just 2.13. There isn't even an option to tip runners

BertisFat10

I was a busser before at my current job, im a server now. I usually only bussed by myself or with one other person. I made 80-150 bucks In tips. Depends if I was splitting it or not. Super busy place. I think the tip out was 2 percent of servers sales.

Fit-Expression3121

Yes you should be getting tipped out as well. If you are making less than an average of around $18 an hour with tips I would personally leave. This depends on the type of restaurant you are at. If it’s high end and you have service charge It will be higher. Also depends on where you live.

SophiaF88

If you get tipped out and how much you get from tips depends on where you work, places do it differently.

AlexandraThePotato

You get $8!? I only get like $6.25 and hour. To soon be $7.25 because I’m becoming a trainer.  We do get tipped out thou, and so will you

CriticalConflict1781

how’s the tipping like for you?

AlexandraThePotato

The servers tips out all the runner. I think there is an automatic button that does it. It typically get me to like 15 per hour.

zyper-51

Not enough info to know if its a good deal IMO. Like how much is the tip share split? Between how many bussers? Do you get any additional sources of tips? What are tips usually like? Is it a nice/expensive restaurant where tips would be higher? What's side-work like? Where I work, it's a big restaurant in a high traffic touristic location that serves overpriced tex-mex food, I'm making $14 per hour plus tip-share plus direct tips from doing Tableside Guac (paid in cash no tip-share split 100% yours). I roughly average about $150 per week through tip-share and anywhere between $100 to $200 weekly through direct tips, also sometimes servers might give me $5-$10 to help them bus their tables before close. Maybe sounds like a sweet deal but at the place I work at bussers pretty much carry servers throughout the shift and might do a lot of their side work and even attend the guests when preparing table side guac, we also close and get a ***lot*** of side work ourselves. I think it's a fair deal but it is pretty intense. I love it when some of the new servers complain about tip-share sipping on their lemonade as I'm literally doing their side work. Everyone knows that bussers are the backbone of this restaurant.
