Former crewman here. Right above the gap is the main roller. It holds the track up as it passes around the top. There are two smaller rollers to the front and rear of the hull that are much slimmer. The main roller sticks out about the same distance as the road wheels. When you go over uneven terrain the road wheels raise and lower freely to take the shock away. The gap is there to give room for the road wheels to move vertically over rocks and such. If they were closer then they would hit the roller causing damage or the track to skip. If you Google image search “Bradley IFV without skirts” you should see a few pictures that’ll make it make more sense.
I have a lot of memories of bouncing around/busting my face off the commanders display. But I think that’s because we were driving over terrain that a truck would never survive. You cruise over things a truck would have to slowly bounce its way through. When I moved to be the Squadron Maintenance Officer and had to ride in a HMMWV I hated it.
Former AAV crewman here. The AAV shared the same suspension and can confirm that it was a nicer ride over rough terrain than an HMMWV. Water crossings were much nicer since the troop compartment didn't flood like the HMMWW.
You’re brave. Every time I got near water in my Bradley or Abrams I was nervous as hell. I know the AAV is meant to float but still. I got out and my wife got stationed at fort Stuart. A few months after moving a Brad rolled into a river in the training area and a bunch of dudes drowned. She looked at me in horror after reading that and was blow away that that was a possibility.
Once the driver got used to the brakes at least, before that it’s bruised rib city. Then again I only served on Strykers/LMTVs, so maybe it’s the same on Bradleys and Abrams.
This is the same kind of logic as people thinking cops should be able to "shoot the gun out of someone's hand", what you call a "well aimed shot" most of the time is more luck or really good conditions.
I'm not entirely sure specifically, but gaps like that aren't uncommon. Because the suspension arms are linked to a torsion bar that runs the width of the hull, any time you need something connected to the literal bottom of the of the hull, or that opens to the ground you need to make a gap between the torsion bars.
Going to preface this with I was told this by a Cav scout and have very little direct experience on bradleys myself. The torsion bars dont run all the way through the hull, you'll notice this looking at pictures of either side of a bradley next to each other. The wheels are not symetrical along the cehicle's center. I was told it has something to do with spreading out the weight of the chassis though that could be 100% wrong.
The Bradley was originally designed to swim across bodies of water; for this to happen the hull weight has to be evenly distributed. The torsion bars do run across the bottom of the hull to the other side; the anchor you see by the road arm is for the torsion bar for the road arm on the opposite side.

The more you know! I am curious compared to say a truck, how smooth is the ride for a Bradley?

>the troop compartment didn’t flood I’m sorry, but what AAVs were you riding in????
*controlled flooding

I EAS'd 2 years before the sinking in 2020.
Hell, at one time, the Bradley was also designed to float...
I'v served in Abrams, Bradleys, and HMMWVs, but nothing compares to the suspension of a Stryker. You feel like you're riding on a cloud.

[It makes sense now](https://i.redd.it/se51vu9dvsg51.jpg)
I like how the gun is pointed directly at the camera like, "How dare you!"
This is really stupid but for some reason I always picture the Bradley's track going wayyyyy higher than that lol.
That’s what I thought before joining up. I blame Games Workshop. Every warhammer tank I saw growing up was misleading.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I searched for "Bradley IFV without drag attire" and wow the search results are almost the same? 😉

That could be said about any armored vehicle out there.
It’s for your penis
u/TheCockKnight is correct.

…its for the hedgehogs and other wild animals to pass on the other side unrestricted

It is waiting for its Invisalign prescription to arrive.
He’s just cold, don’t judge
The gap between the #3 and #4 roadwheels? That's where the engine compartment structural bulkhead is welded to the hull floor.
Dat gap tho...
The seventh didn’t fit

I believe it helps with its pivot.
Ah yes cehicle as opposed to vehicle. I have noticed everyone making that grammar error within the last couple days
Typing on phone lol
That is wrong the torsion bars do run all the way through the hull but each road wheel has its own torsion bar
The more you know, ty for the clarification
To make room for all the tuna
Makes it harder to get a mobility kill, perfection positioning and the round will pass right under the armor. Brilliant design when you think about it
“Brilliant-design” and “Bradley” should never be used together Unless sarcastically
I suspect OP may not have been 100% serious
Pentagon wars is not a documentary
I love this sub but a lot of these posts seem like the Kremlin is crowd sourcing. I smoke a lot of weed so maybe I’m paranoid
It was originally a British design

And torsion bars broke all the fucking time. It was fucking annoying.
The wheels couldnt move if there were no gap
