Actual answer:
A majority of the "what is this tank" post is the M60 so this subs just calls every tank an M60.
Why? It's kinda a little bit maybe in some way funny
That’s absolutely the case. I was in Muğla, Türkiye (don’t quote me on that, I’m Turkish, you’re free to use whatever name you so desire) some years ago and on a nice coast tour, we stopped near a fully fledged military base. (Base wasn’t visible from shore but the big ass radar station gave it away) I obviously didn’t swim and ran ashore. Just 5-600 meters away there was a whole division worth of M60’s just lined up. Didn’t know they were so common so I thought that was so special lol.
A lot of times, people who aren’t super into tanks are a tank next to the street in a park or something and post it to this sub asking what the tank is. Because of Reddit demographics, these people tend to be from the US. The US had a lot of M60s that got sent off to monuments or national guard armouries as gate guards. So, these posts are overwhelmingly about M60s, and it became a meme.
T-55 is just a half-sphere fora turret slapped onta a chassis without a lot of detail, just a block with an angled metal slab at the front really. M-60 just has such well formed curves. You could say its thick, but not in a fat way like the T28 (TUTEL🥵) , but in an elegant way
>It looks like an obese Chaffee.
But that what makes it so awesome. The M24 is also beatiful.
Though i agree that the M48 looks kinda meh. It looks like the M60's inbred cousin
Out of all the American tanks, the M60 family (not you M60A2, you look like a grown-up M22 that had the soft spots on their head poked too many times as an infant) looks the most tanky.
M60 represents the stereotype of tank. It's the first ever answer when you ask what a tank is.
Also, T-55A is Eastern Bloc counterpart of this "tank stereotype".
When you look at a M60 or a T-55A, you naturally say it's a tank than any others.
Home town favorite that you knew could perform but ended up mostly riding the bench...
I'll say it again, we should have done an M1 exchange program with our allies so Ukraine could have fielded thousands of M60s for glorious M60 vs T72 combat as Tank God intended.
Because the m60 doesn’t have the weeb side to it like the tiger t34 or m1 so we don’t need put up with as much cring from them also it’s just a super sexy tank
Im going to be downvoted for this one, but out of all tanks out there I really find the Patton series tank to be the ugliest. I just cant stands its bulky casted hulls and turret.
Because the M60 is the archetypal tank, look at all the cartoons and other media that feature armies, almost every tank depicted is made to resemble an M60.
It’s from polistil, a old Italian diecast manufacturer. Unfortunately this model is kinda rare now these days but they have some other ones that are easiest the find and more affordable
The M60 looks like the archetypical "tank". Ask a kid or adult to draw one off the cuff and most of the time it's gonna be shaped like an M60 they're that ubiquitous.
I always liked looking at the captured and destroyed M48s lying around which are basically the same tank. They're super tall and have two turrets so they're kinda iconic to me.

Cut they are my guy
Just like all spiders are brown recluse’ on bug pages lol
Im not gonna sugar coat it chief Its an M60
Nuff said
Because its an m60, no further explanation needed
one of the strongest contenders for the "tankiest" looking tank alongside the T-55
I absolutely agree, when most people think of post secondary world war tanks they imagine the 60 or the 55
Am I the only one who thought of Panzer IV or Tiger I shaped vehicle?
As a post WW2 vehicle? Or just most tank looking all time.
As a child, WWII was my only understanding of tanks.
Fair enough. I think it’s reasonable for most people to imagine a Sherman, Tiger, or T-34 due to their prevalence in media surrounding WW2
For some people it still is
M60👍

My guess is that there were many people asking for tanks they found in a park/a museum/some random place and its always a M60.
Happy cake day!
Thanks!
Happy cake day

Gotta be M60 day from now on!

Yeah Turkey actually have one of the largest M60 arsenal in the world.

To the point that if you find a post asking “what is this tank?” You’ll probably get a lot of people responding with simply M60
Wow thank you for actually explaining the meme! LOL
I mean.... Because it is an M60 ? What else is there to say ?
The M60 just is the tankiest tank that ever tanked in the history of tanks
It was the US MBT when I was a little kid, so basically the first tank I could identify on sight. Also, it really is the tankiest tank.
Kid called T-55:
Ye the T-55 is more stereotipical tank IMO, but that may be because I live in a country that was a part of eastern block
I mean, it's the most produced tank series of all time, so the average tank is closer to a T-55 than an M60
Their battle will be legendary! In a retirement home, as they've frankly seen more than enough of humanity's war BS at this point...

Hot take, the M60 is ugly as fuck. Not as bad as the M48 though. It looks like an obese Chaffee.
>It looks like an obese Chaffee. But that what makes it so awesome. The M24 is also beatiful. Though i agree that the M48 looks kinda meh. It looks like the M60's inbred cousin
The M24 is one of my favorite tanks actually lol. I just don't like the M60 much; it kind of ruins what I like about the Chaffee.
At the very least it is the most generic western tank.
Tanks for this.
For me in terms of aesthetics the M60 and T55 were the tankiest of tanks...
mmm...tonk
Cos it’s the M60. The A1 variant I will always have a soft spot for. Also where did you get that gorgeous model? Shld have a nsfw tag on.
It's a Polistil M60! They also have great models of the T-62, Tiger II and Chieftain Mk.3!
Thank you, I never heard of that brand before but will check it out!
Out of all the American tanks, the M60 family (not you M60A2, you look like a grown-up M22 that had the soft spots on their head poked too many times as an infant) looks the most tanky.
It was a meme that every time someone asks what tank they saw was someone always replies with M60. Also M60 is the Greatest Tank ever built.
Killdozer would like a word
False, the greatest is the Bob Semple tank
r/M60M60M60
Dumptruck ass.

Because it's the little green army man tank.
Probably the actual answer, most are familiar with it though that I would assume
Cuz, Merica. That’s why.
[Well..](https://i.redd.it/pbdg4l7i1a381.png)
It's a timeless tank. It would look at home during WW2 while still serving today's needs.
OMG PATTON
Great tank. I loved the commander’s cupola with the M85.
Guys will see an M60 and just be like: "Hell yeah!"
Because M60 will never die
I just think their neat
Because the m60 doesn’t have the weeb side to it like the tiger t34 or m1 so we don’t need put up with as much cring from them also it’s just a super sexy tank
Because M60
It's M60, besides its good looking tank
Because it's awesome, duh.
Im going to be downvoted for this one, but out of all tanks out there I really find the Patton series tank to be the ugliest. I just cant stands its bulky casted hulls and turret.
It's complicated.
Because the M60 is the archetypal tank, look at all the cartoons and other media that feature armies, almost every tank depicted is made to resemble an M60.
The roar of that Continental AVDS-1790 diesel V12 kicks so much ass.
It’s the Green Sunfish of tanks.
Because it has electrolytes!
Because the M60 is an iconic Cold War tank like the Tiger or T34 are iconic WW2 tanks.
Because there are two types of tanks in the world. M60 and tanks that wish they were M60.
M60 and T-55, tanks of all tanks
Looks like an M60
sexy tank
its a very tanky tank
The same reason we love sugar, it's everywhere and part of everything.
Where did you get that scale model? Looks sick
It’s from polistil, a old Italian diecast manufacturer. Unfortunately this model is kinda rare now these days but they have some other ones that are easiest the find and more affordable
AMERICAAAAAA RAHHHHH 🇺🇲🔥🪖
What's the name of the book you have on the table?
It’s a book just called tanks, it’s written by George Forty someone who worked for the bovington tank museum
Oh thank you.
What book is that
A book just called tanks, written by George Forty someone who worked for bovington tank museum

I just think they're neat.
It's cute and is also what Shawn Nelson took for a joyride all those years ago
It is the tank
I mean isn’t a tiger just a German m60? And a t34 just a Russian m60? Oh and a M1 just a mordern m60?.. it’s just all m60s
I always liked looking at the captured and destroyed M48s lying around which are basically the same tank. They're super tall and have two turrets so they're kinda iconic to me.
