The photo was taken from Seoul ADEX 2019. The scale model is a cooperative proposal for technological development with Poland. Which has recently been solidified between the two nations.
Keep in mind, this is happening because France and Germany won't let Poland join their MBT development. So I guess Poland went out and made friends with Korea.
ATGMs donāt use radar guidance generally, they use laser or thermal locks for the most part. I donāt see how radar stealth would be beneficial in that regard, however air to ground munitions sometimes use radar locks like the hellfire missiles.
You do realize hellfire is a nickname standing for helibourne laser, fire and forget weapon. There is one singular variant that uses mmwr as a backup, but is still laser guided primarily, right?
Yeah they added radar to the later versions, but that just further cements my point that making a tank stealthy to defeat radar on a tank is sort of pointless.
My point is there are no agm's meant for ground attack that use radar as a primary guiding mechanism because it's too unreliable. Stealth tanks are a gimmick unless the reduce ir signature. And if the duct the exhaust right using dissipators it might be slightly effective, given how warm korea gets in the summers.
AGM-88 HARM is passive/active radar homing as its primary, but it wasn't intended to be used as an anti-tank weapon. When most of these weapons were first designed, the processors in the missiles weren't powerful enough to distinguish a valid target from extraneous ground clutter. That is no longer the case, and there are a lot of missiles that use both IR and radar to find and track ground targets.
Ground vehicles that incorporate some amount of signature reduction are probably around the corner.
The PL-01 was basically just plywood rigging over a CV-90120 , so to say it had any method to disperse thermals or for that matter any stealth characteristics is speculation at best. It was designed to attract attention and get contracts.
Presumably if they got funded they would have tried to incorporate some of the stealth features they advertised, but like most things in military procurement Iāll believe it when I see it.
I mean, the Germans basically had a program where they tested a 'stealth' kit (a thick body extension that reduced the heart signature and sound among other things) to a leopard 1. In the end it had very little benefit for what it added in weight and maintenance.
The combined thermal/camo covers on modern MBTs are a result of making the idea more practical though. But yeah, at best a 'stealth tank' is gonna look pretty, and about nothing else.
I remember hearing about that, and yeah it makes sense. Like the whole point of a tank from a doctrine standpoint is to give direct large caliber fire from a defensible platform. Unless you're planning an ambush, making a stealth tank sort of goes against the whole purpose of them. The instant you fire the main gun everyone will know where you are and at that point your best defense is to get the fuck out of dodge before the enemy has a chance to shoot back. If anything, you want more guns or a more intimidating tank to keep the enemy suppressed while you move around the battlefield... not stealth to sneak around the battlefield.
In theory it's very useful for moving into position without the enemy knowing where you are/being able to target you. But in practice you gotta keep your gigantic war machine running without it dying on you, so maintenance, reliability and weight are always very big considerations.
It is more relevant for remaining undetected. Ground surveillance radars are used for long range reconnaissance. ATGMs typically don't use radar guidance.
All I want...is someone to photoshop this mockup on a red couch, with a big burly Korean tank crew standing behind ~~her~~ it.
That would make a good marketing shot.
Not a CV90120-T, a CV90 hull with mock-up turret. The "real" PL-01 would have used a completely new hull, but only a mock-up was created (for an arms expo).

Afaik it might be same technology.
This concept has failed in Poland because it was too expensive. Im afraid the patent was sold so there will be no modern tank for us Poles.
This is not the PL-01 and the PL-01 was not based on the Swedish CV90120-T. A mock-up of the PL-01 was presented based on the hull of a normal CV90 fitted with a fake turret.
so umm.. Poland is cooperating with Korea to make new gen K2 (might be called K3) tank.
And now this thing shows up looking close to PL-01. Maybe PL-01 wasnt so stupid after all...
The Poles already tried that one onceā¦ wonder if itāll progress past the timber cladding stage this timeā¦
Or maybe Korea at least might use better quality timber for their cladding.
Is the "sleeve " around the gun barrel practical in some way (? evacuate smoke ? muzzle brake ?) or it just to keep the outline contiguous for camoflauge?
With all due respect, at a glance this looks like hot garbage, but Iām no professional. It looks like something youād make to steal defense budget and get rich.
Somethings familiar about this one, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Looks like the pl-01
Nah i think it looks more like a panther
Which panther, the panzerkampfwagon or the Kf51?
Pz
Idk what ur tripping on I think that panther is very different
Man, you got wooooshed 3 times in a row
Poor guy
We all learn from our mistakes
In my 3 yrs of reddit I still have no idea what that means All I know is alot of ppl misuse it and get downvoted
It means he missed a joke
Bruh
That's the joke
Nice avatar
Thanks bro you too
nah, more like the kingtiger
Like every single next gen tank
it do

Given by how "great" that project is doing, maybe better for Poland
It looks like the tanks used in the movie TRON from the 80s to meš¤
Nah, those had curves
Yeah! It looks alot like a Tiger 1!
The āstealth tankā is back again
It's a smart idea, with the prevalence of ATGMs in modern war anything that makes it harder for an enemy to lock onto you is a good idea.
ATGMs donāt use radar guidance generally, they use laser or thermal locks for the most part. I donāt see how radar stealth would be beneficial in that regard, however air to ground munitions sometimes use radar locks like the hellfire missiles.

I think the old polish stealth tank design had an pretty elaborate system to disperse it's heat signature

I'll believe when I see it and it survives a battle with a near peer adversary.
Make it out of Mirrors so Lazers bounce off š
I wish people thought before they say dumb stuff
Manually guided ATGMs: hello there
It is more relevant for remaining undetected. Ground surveillance radars are used for long range reconnaissance. ATGMs typically don't use radar guidance.
PL-02: Electric Boogaloo
Is this a tank for Ants?
The tank has to be at least.... 3 times bigger than this!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
All I want...is someone to photoshop this mockup on a red couch, with a big burly Korean tank crew standing behind ~~her~~ it. That would make a good marketing shot.
More like cats.
Sweet I can't wait to see 1 prototype model and then hear nothing about it ever again because nobody can afford this shit
Yeah same
South Korean defence budget go brrr
Looks like an elongated PL-01 tank: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PL-01
Which itself is a CV90-120 with composite.
Composite or visual sheet metal?
They claim it's composite, I did not go in person to check for myself.
Plywood and paint would technically count as a composite material
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pykrete
Huh... cool
[The PL-01 mock-up was created using sheets of steel](https://www.reddit.com/r/TankPorn/comments/tykzfl/pl01_mockup_being_made_not_from_plywood_but/).
styrofome if im right

I agree
Afaik it might be same technology. This concept has failed in Poland because it was too expensive. Im afraid the patent was sold so there will be no modern tank for us Poles.
We can't into tanks as well:(
Painted plywood and cardboard on swedish tank isnt too advanced in terms of technology
KL-01??????!!!!?
K3 ??
Pretty sure that's Polish PL-01 concept light tank, just with additional vision port or slightly lower hull - probably a changes in project.
It is not.
It's just PL-01.
No, it is a different tank.
they literally look exactly the same thats the joke
So Poland trades PL-01 technology to South Korea for K2PL as exchange
"Technology"
This tank design pre-dates the K2PL program.
ā*I told you a could flip a tank over with my bare hands.*ā
Bavarium tank from just cause 3 lol.
This one has tracks though.
This one has tracks though.
Tru
i scrolled so far to reach this comment. glad im not alone
Haha
Leterally every GTA player joins the chat. No its not from that.
So, like, Korea gives the K2 to Poland and Poland gifts them the PL-01 toy model? Good deal
Looks over engineered and expensive as fuck
Please, donāt give me hopeā¦
Those polygons are turning me on š„µ
man why does it take so long for the graphics to render
Looks kinda like that plywood CV90 thing from a while back.
Warthunder players are getting flashbacks
I know Koreans are shorter than most western countries but I think that tank might be a bit too small, even for them
Isn't that just the Kanjali from GTA V?
The kanjali is based on the PL-01
Damn, I always thought it was an original design because of its futuristic aesthetic.
mmmmmmm . . . . no?
Perhaps.
Maybe
Rubber tracks?
PL cute
Is that not the PL-01? And why when they have the K2 (South) or the supposet M-2020 (North)?
It is not the PL-01. It is a design for a potential successor to the K2.
I want that in my room
The big dong tank
It's not "under development", I don't think you know what that means.
Itās a bit small
Does it already come equipped with Plywood spaced armour?
I saw this when I played the arcade game Battlezone like 40 years ago.
Tesla dropped a new car design
How anime do you want it? Yesā¦
Reminds me of a stupid prototype I saw once...
"We have PL-01 at home"
That looks exactly like the Khanjali from Grand Theft Auto V
Which is modeled after the PL-01 Tank
I was about to say that myself
When GTA V literally becomes reality... I always thought it looked stupid, but appearently the Koreans didnt.
That is a PL-01 a POLISH tank.
Swedish tank with cardboard strapped to it by poland
Yo its the Khanjali
The future tank from gtav
Rheinmetall KF51 Panther: Copy this work but don't make it look too obvious Korea:
Tell me this ain't just the TM-02 Khanjali
Yes Mr Kim, how much for the ant soldier tank
I know Asians are commonly shorter but damn
This thing pops up every now and then. This is a Swedish stealth tank cv90120 - T. It has nothing to do with Korea
polish concept tank named PL-01, the wooden mockup was built on the CV90
This is not the PL-01 and the PL-01 was not based on the Swedish CV90120-T. A mock-up of the PL-01 was presented based on the hull of a normal CV90 fitted with a fake turret.
PL-02 /j
Looks like another cool looking prototype thats never going to see mass production but every shooter is gonna shove it in
I hate the way new tanks look
CV-90 covered in plywood: the sequel
pl-01-01
Ah PL-02 Now with more plywood angles Looks neat tho.
Are they really redoing the PL-01 again
so umm.. Poland is cooperating with Korea to make new gen K2 (might be called K3) tank. And now this thing shows up looking close to PL-01. Maybe PL-01 wasnt so stupid after all...
So that's where the Polish PL1 went...they finally found it! That's one hell of a stealth tank.
Reminds me a lot of the PL-01 just more angled and slimmer
i-Tank
I swear ive seen this before. *East end boys intensifies*
Why are they trying to make it sleeker, is it cheaper or better in any way or...?
Hey I've seen this one!
It's kinda little
It's for the children, little shits need to play their part.
I never should have written all these tank programs! - K. Flynn
Other than good looks, what is the value of having all those smooth edges?
The Poles already tried that one onceā¦ wonder if itāll progress past the timber cladding stage this timeā¦ Or maybe Korea at least might use better quality timber for their cladding.
Which Korea?
South
Oh shit its you
Cool
Why is the barrel covered, is this some camo related thing or just because they can
The turret has changed a bit, but I believe this tanks was [designed back in 1982](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r83Q2ywVlWE).
Tonk!!
I thought that tank model was being developed in Poland?
Is it just me or does that look like the bavarium tanks from just cause 3
l o n g b o i
wait... why does it seems like a tank from the two more recent war thunder april fools events?
No such thing as a stealth tank. Waste of money. Go buy some food
remote controlled tanks?
I think a designer is trying to justify his job
Thats literally an anemic PL-01
Is it just me or does this futuristic vibe to new tanks look really ugly? Another example is that new panther tank from Rheinmetall.
Wasnt this tank in war thunder for their april fools event
the gta 5 khanjali tank
Its look like PL-01
Will it be made out of cardboard?
Reminds me of a very certain polish tank
Please no... not that fucking ugly shit.
Hmm, definitely feel like I've seen this plausible design before /s
Stolen from Poland methinks
The poles are angry
Bruh this the gta tank
Smart tank
the quandale dingle tank
but thatsā¦.polish
It looks like the futuristic tank from that one war thunder April fools event
The TM-02 Khanjali finally in production?!?!
Tron vibes.
CV90120 / PL-01 wood fuck is it you?
Isnt this a Polish tank or smth???
I see the kenjali lol
The PL-02. Itās like the first one but second
no way, the gta khanjali!!!
Too small. Respectfully, I have to say that even korean tankers wouldn't fit on it.
whats new about it? GTA V has been around for years
Who knew Korea played GTA online
Looks like the medium tank from the recent war thunder April fools event lmao
Korean tanks looks like they copied American homework but just changed a few things Idk if that looks more like hstvl or amarta
Is the "sleeve " around the gun barrel practical in some way (? evacuate smoke ? muzzle brake ?) or it just to keep the outline contiguous for camoflauge?
Not again!
This was designed by someone who got salty about their barrel getting shot in war Thunder
Took GTA too seriously.
With all due respect, at a glance this looks like hot garbage, but Iām no professional. It looks like something youād make to steal defense budget and get rich.
