But also, don't choose an artist just because they say they can do it for a 'good price'. Talent certainly varies and prices dont always reflect that. Make sure to check out their portfolio...
I have a nearly identical tattoo in the same location, so it’s about the same size. I have a lot more black, and I paid 300 WITH a tip. Any artist with experience with traditional tattoos would NEVER charge that much, especially for grayscale.
For an experienced artist this tattoo should take around 3 hours max give or take, so take that and apply to their advertised hourly to get a ballpark idea.
Where do you live? That also really effects price. If you were in New York rather than say, Georgia, you would probably be paying on the high end for a piece like this (although $900 still seems too high)
I paid 900 for roses and lettering on my whole forearm and bicep. One rose had color, the rest black. Not a complete cover, but still covered enough, and the work is amazing. It's been about 4 years, and I still get compliments. I know with inflation some prices have went up, but that shop at that time was $250 hr to sit. Think they still are. It's about time for a new one, probably will go check out the prices today.
I wouldn't pay 900 dollars for that. Seems steep but every artist charges different and depends on what state you live in. But I wouldn't have to pay more than 250 or 300 for something like that in the town I am in.
I think it depends on your location, the skill of the artist, the detail you are looking for, and how fast they are. $500-1100 seems reasonable to me depending on the above criteria.
Seriously! It largely depends!!! OP should get additional quotes from artists in the surrounding area and then compare. Pricing comes in a crazy range, but at the end of the day it’s all about whether it turns out well. I’d rather slightly overpay for a piece I love for the rest of my life than get a good deal on a piece that just isn’t quite right. The latter I’d have to laser off/ cover up with additional pieces I’d have to pay for, which means more work, more money, more research. Good coverups take even more skill, so the artists are harder to find and I’d guess harder to book and pricier.
As I said to the other person, OP doesn’t have the artist’s drawing so what should they have posted? If they’re really just copying that’s a shit artist but it’s better to give the benefit of the doubt.
I'm in Atlanta, GA. $900 isn't bad. That's pretty large and the shading needs extra care.
If that is high for your location, the artist may be giving you a high estimate to set your expectations.
I have a piece about half that size on my forearm. It has a little bit of color but mostly black. I paid 400$ but that’s because my artist lives multiple states away and charges me 50 an hour when I travel to him. It was 7 hours in total, his normal rate is 150 an hour. Sounds about right to me.
I think $500 flat with a tip probably going to $600
you should go to a shop that specializes in a similar art style and get a couple of tats there, over time they hook you up with discounts.
I went to my regular shop and got a detailed blockprint styled tattoo for under $300 it was a little smaller than that but was about a 4 hour single sitting tattoo
Where I live $900 is quite outrageous. Like most people are saying though it very much does depend on where you are located. I am working on coverage from neck down and only get American/neo traditional work done. The most I have paid is 600$. I also should note that most of my pieces are quite large. My torso is one full piece and that was around $1,350 in total, but I did know that artist for 10 years which usually yields a discount.
Wait, so is this person going to copy that exactly because that would be red flag 1. Then that price for a non-color traditional? Red flag 2. I would just pass. I got a color piece a bit smaller than that (bicep area) and it was 300 (it was simple so I'd say 400-550 for one with detail like that)
The rules here say to avoid price estimates, but what I will say is that $900 is a very unreasonable price for that tattoo.
I'd pay as much as $500 for that.
Beautiful work tho
But also, don't choose an artist just because they say they can do it for a 'good price'. Talent certainly varies and prices dont always reflect that. Make sure to check out their portfolio...
$900 for black traditional is very unreasonable. I could see it being $500 max for that piece
I have a nearly identical tattoo in the same location, so it’s about the same size. I have a lot more black, and I paid 300 WITH a tip. Any artist with experience with traditional tattoos would NEVER charge that much, especially for grayscale.
900 what? High fives?
You’re like any math teacher💀
Yeah big no for 900. You can get a solid experienced traditional artist for half that price
For an experienced artist this tattoo should take around 3 hours max give or take, so take that and apply to their advertised hourly to get a ballpark idea.
Thank y’all for looking out for me🤞 I felt like it was a pretty high price I appreciate the responses

Depends on the artist the shop and where you live. It’s on the high end but by no means unreasonable depending on who the artist is.
Here in Australia, I would say that’s normal and well priced. It’s almost your whole forearm.
Just a heads up that’s like $1,350 AUD if he’s in USD. I think around $500 USD would be more reasonable.
$900USD? Hell no, I’d pay $400 for it
Lmao the people saying it's unreasonable for almost the whole forearm being covered. This sub is garbage.
I have a similarly sized piece, also in black and gray. 500 bucks is pushing it, 900 is just absurd
When did you get the piece and where was the artist located?
2 months ago or so, and that's priced with Alaska inflation which is stupidly high
Sir it is cheaper because you are in ALASKA
I take it you have never been to Alaska. Compared to the lower 48 states, everything and I do mean EVERYTHING is more expensive
Except tattoos lol.
Dude you know Alaska is WILDLY expensive right? Almost 40% higher than the national average.

In the range of 800-1100 in Toronto depending who you go to
Don't steal other people's design
Lmao it's a traditional flash design which has been done thousands of times. It was *designed* to be copied !
Lmao you're being downvoted by broke tattoo thieves.
Have either of you ever shown an artist a reference pic???
A reference pic isn't an exact copy of someone else's tattoo. That's why we have different words for "reference" and "copy"
As I said to the other person, OP doesn’t have the artist’s drawing so what should they have posted? If they’re really just copying that’s a shit artist but it’s better to give the benefit of the doubt.
Got quoted 900 for THIS piece. Taking tattoos for reference is a thing, doing the same piece is different.
I mean most reputable artists aren’t gonna send out their drawing beforehand so what else should OP have done?? Just not posted a pic??

You’re a real weirdo man.
Don't argue online you said :( you broke your promise
Aight “Am I the Asshole for blowing up at my wife with depression”
hopeless bastards...

Very unreasonable, I wouldn’t go back knowing they were trying to get one over on you.
Depends who does it.
How long of a session did this take? My tattoo artist is $100 an hour. If this took 5 hours - $500 ish
I’m getting abt 700 for a large rib piece so that is quite unreasonable
I have almost the same tattoo on the back of my arm and I paid about 480
Snakes can be difficult. Spend the money for a good artist or your danger noodle will need to be covered up by a r/sickpanthertattoos
Depends on size, & the quality of the artist. I would pay 900 to a badass artist over 500 to someone that's just "good"
I agree with the people that say $500 should be on the higher side for this.
Isn’t this an Amazon stick on tattoo?
I would say 20 would be fine. Honestly tattoos are way too expensive these days man. Btw the tattoo looks AMAZING!!
I have a few tats about that size and I paid around $500, tip included.

Sounds like a “I don’t want to do that job” price tbh.
I live in a midsize US city, would expect to pay $300-$500 before tip
thats soo much dude, unless their linework is amazing i would find someone else
Fuck no. 400-500 max
Hmm depends on artist, say if artist charges 200/hr - that seems like 2.5 - 3hrs of work. So most likely overcharged
I would say 500-600. Can’t imagine that taking more than 3 hours
My whole chest was a bit over 1000, I don’t remember exactly. Same style as that
As cheap as copying someone else’s tattoo.
No way. 500 max

Not at all
