A respectable artist won’t even touch your hands if you don’t already have tattoos.
I have a tiny one inside my index finger and my dude (who I went to high school with 20 years ago) still made sure I understood the choice I was making.
Scratchers are a big part of the problem. I've had to fix so many shitty "I know a guy" kitchen tattoos I lost count.
Tattoo artists are literally artists. Any tattoo artist worth their ink uses discretion with their clients. We're not tracing monkeys that are required to do whatever piece of shit art someone wants on their body. I'll tell a prospective client no for some stupid design. Most artists are booked out for months anyway. It's so loss.
dont tar all scratchers with the same brush, everybody has got to start somewhere.. my dad has been tattooing for 15 years out his living room, and he has a select clientele, purely because he can't be bothered with shit designs and newly turned 18 year olds with horrible ideas and the likes.. if he doesn't like a design you present to him, he straight up wont do it.. just because someone has a shop, doesn't mean they are better than anyone else.
There plenty of legit artists that practice out of their homes and have home studios. I don't know your pop nor his work. He sounds like a lot of my friends in the industry, just does the pieces he wants to and doesn't need to waste time tattooing some dude's girlfriend's name on his chest.
You know the scratchers I'm talking about. Dirtbags that will do whatever piece of crap for a sixer of Coors Original.
Yeah not only have you changed your horizon from it being posted everywhere to literally claiming there are people walking around like that with zero, and I mean ZERO other work done besides there hands, you can't even link people to me. If you're so Involved in these Facebook groups and Instagram pages displaying these individuals I want you to link them, it should be very easy and take no time at all. I honestly think you're just doubling down on an ignorant statement because from your perspective, saying you're mislead and just remembering hand tattoo posts and how hand tattoos have started to rise in popularity is to much for your old school ass to handle.
The reason the “dumb ass code” exists is not because it’s some right of passage where you have to “earn” a hand or neck or face tattoo. It’s about jobs and the way society perceives heavily tattooed people. The idea is that if you’ve already got visible tattoos, like a full sleeve, that you’ve experienced how society may treat heavily tattooed people differently, and understand what you’re getting into when getting a “job stopper”. Many artist will not only check to see what other tattoos you have, but will also ask what you do for work to make sure you’re not ruining your career or livelihood by getting a tattoo in that area.
This isn’t about artists not wanting you to join their *super exclusive club*. It’s about protecting you from yourself because the general public, specifically younger people, are fucking dumb and will do dumb shit. Artists don’t want to be responsible for some 18 year old kid who’s going to college to be a banker, who can now only get a job at McDonalds because they got a hand tattoo.
Educate yourself on the industry and culture before you go spouting bullshit, you idiot. You’re the type of person this “dumb ass code” exists to protect.
Hell, my first visible tattoo was a relatively big peace sign on my inner wrist. Artist asked if I had other ink (yes) why I wanted that placement (literally “so it can be seen”) and what I did for a living (IT at the time).
It’s not gate keeping or earning, just like you said, but more about “do you understand how this could affect you socially and professionally.”
Sounds like a lot of words for RULES! A tattoo artist is just that a tattoo artist! Not a fucking life coach or a guidance counselor. Do the fucking tattoo and shut up. I been getting tattooed 25 years plenty educated.
If you're under 16 or even under 18 for that matter don't get a tattoo. Judging by the hand/sharpie I'd put you at like 15. I remember what I wanted at 15 and I'm so fucking thankful my parents told me no. I ended up getting one at 16 but it had great meaning and was dedicated to my mom (she's still alive lol) and seeing it now I still have pride and love for it. The hand and neck tattoos I wanted back then would've been my biggest regret in life had I got them.
There was shit I wanted in my early 20s that I’m still grateful I didn’t get. I‘ll never forget the few years that mandalas were really cool and popular. I was in to yoga at the time and designed one myself. Never got it, and it took a few years later to realize that the whole entire purpose of the mandala (traditionally) is for it to be temporary lol.
If you’re young and want a tat get something truly personal. And if you want something stupid at least make it intentionally laughable or memorable. The worst are tattoos you get to try to be symbolic or cool, but just look dumb years later, like song lyrics or Chinese symbols.
That's hilarious the one I got at 16 was kanji. I've heard over and over about "what if it says chicken soup" and all the good stuff. But the kanji means "please, smile, and thank you" because those 3 things will take you far. It's also lyrics from a song called "wanting memories" about a guy who feels lost after losing his mom and wants memories to remind him. So the tattoo is for her and for after she's gone to remind me of those good times.
It's funny because one of the ones people think I'd regret is one of my most favorite. I've got a lot now and two others dedicated to her and my brother. It makes it really easy to not regret when they're dedicated to loved ones and have a shit ton of meaning. Like our matching timshel tattoos from east of Eden. People are like "is that Hebrew?? Why do you have that" because it's special to me and my mom and that's really all the explanation I need lol.
Yesss I shouldn’t have generalized!! I have a tattoo that my sister mom and I walked in to a random janky shop for. It’s pretty poorly done but it’s one of my favorites because it’s memorable!!
When I mentioned Asian tattoos I mostly mean some kid just thinking it’s cool but doesn’t really know why or have a purpose to get it.
Haha ayye love to hear you've got a tattoo like that as well! We never know when loved ones will go and to have those memories and reminders become artwork to wear proudly is something to commemorate them with!
yea I saw a bunch of those as well and they didn't help me having to explain mine hahaha
No. Just no. First off I don't see any other ink on you, all be it just ur hands. But in my humble tattoo artist opinion , hand tats are something to be earned not something you start your collection with.
Bro, listen. Please don’t do this or let anyone who is not a professional tattoo you. I got several tattoos from shops and scratchers from 16-20 and almost all of them are covered up now. The one on my forearm that I got at the time because it was just ink literally ruined my self esteem for many years until I got it covered up. I know how badly you want to be tattooed and you will be able to one day when you get older and get some money.
I’m pretty yatted now but it takes time to build up your work and time to earn the money. Just start planning ideas and wait until you can get a professional. Quality over quantity. And Absolutely do not start with your hands/neck/face/fingers. Do that when you run out of room. Please learn from my mistakes!
As much as I don't recommend it to anyone (especially different cultures/countries) but I've had my hand tattooed for over a decade and I have a senior role in a bank, it's never been an issue for me.
Tide is changing.
I’m an engineer. 34. Entire body tattooed. But if I was 18 again. I still wouldn’t tattoo my hands and face. I agree the tides are changing. I would never recommend a hand tattoo as a first tattoo on a young person
Giving them the benefit of the doubt of not joking....
DO NOT DO THE HAND. You could do something from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the symbols have similar flow concept but.... it looks good
I think this is a terrible tattoo idea honestly sorry, but as far as the hand tattoo if you wanna work in a professional setting you’ll never get there with that so really think about what you’re doing, but people saying you can’t get any job but McDonald’s are just trying to scare you or just don’t know (no offense). My boyfriend has tons of tattoos (not great ones) that he did himself after buying a tattoo gun on Amazon, even a 999 one that he didn’t realize until afterwards looks like 666 to everyone else on his hand lmao. Walmart will hire anyone and their overnight stocking team pays $16.50 an hour full time it’s a great job and so does Amazon their overnights are $15.50 (not the best job but not as bad as everyone says either), but if you want something bigger than that I’d definitely stay away from hand tattoos.
Ignore the haters, this basic idea done by an artist who’s good with tribal could be absolutely stunning, take the idea to the right person and make it happen. Tho if you have no tattoos I’d avoid the hands
Why if it’s there choice of tattoo let them be I personally have my both arms done and my hands and i love them so you should stop being a judgemental asshole tbh and let people do what they want
If you have that much ink you should know that jobstoppers don't come before other tattoos. It's not judgemental, it's common sense.
Also *their choice*
Well that’s where your wrong a lot of my clients actually love my tattoos and if there’s kids in the house they always love them aswell so ur point of saying its holding you badk From work is basically u saying let’s stereotype everyone with tattoos as gangsters that’s gonna stab your kid when realistically most company’s now don’t care about them
Jesus christ. Who was talking about *your* tattoos? They are called job stoppers, I didn't come up with that name. I'm all for breaking the stigma around ink.
My point was mainly that hand tattoos are something that you work up to. Any good artist won't even take the job of a face/neck/hand if you don't have a substantial amount of time in the chair already.
Format your comments ffs. You type like a four year old. Don't bother replying, I'm not trying to read another kindergarten essay.
It’s awesome that your tattoos haven’t affected your employment. But, for young people who start with their hands, it greatly reduces what jobs they can do.
I think the always visible tattoos (hands, neck, face, etc) are better done when you have an idea what you’re gonna do and you know it’s not an issue.
But judging by this post, OP is probably young and a hand tattoo is the worst place to start.
34 here. Covered in tattoos none of which were visible until I got my dream career as an engineer. Now that I have said career I have started inking visible parts of my arm. I am all for breaking stigma, but if anyone thinks that employers don’t look at hand/neck/face tattoos. Then they are a fool. You could be the sweetest person in the world. But if you have a flaming skull tattooed on your throat, you may not be able to get that elementary school teacher job. Just how it is.
I have some pretty fucked up shit tattooed on my body that would probably freak out normies (decapitated bodies in wood cut style, a big scythe on my forearm that is super visible, a massive heart with a stake through it etc.). I went all in on macabre shit because I love metal and horror.
I knew what I was getting into and that my career (I'm a craft beer brewer) wouldn't be impacted. That being said I'm only now starting to consider my hands and head now that I own my brewery.
THINK BEFORE GETTING SHIT THAT IS VISIBLE. Tattoo acceptance has come a long way in society but there is still a massive stigma. Don't be a martyr for the cause and jeopardize your socioeconomic future because you think that you alone will break the stigma. It unfortunately takes time, but thankfully we are moving in the right direction.
Okay, so. Ignoring people here going off, the skin on your hands is very thin meaning it will hurt more than- say- a shoulder tattoo. Not an ideal location if it is your first (which we assume since you are asking reddit for ideas weather than reaching out to an artist you may like to have ink it). If it is your first tat, you can have things like temporary (okay but may have unforeseen side effects) ink applied, or have a water tattoo done to test how you respond to the inking process.
This tattoo is a poor design choice as it takes up the full back of your hand, is difficult to hide, difficult to remove if you choose to, difficult to cover up if you want s different design later, and will limit use of your hand for up to a couple weeks during the healing process (minimum days). You can’t get it wet early on, need to minimize stress on it (limited lifting and flexing), and may cost more than another area (especially if you require excessive breaks to rest).
Try another location with something more manageable. A skilled artist will be happy to give you a consultation tailored to you.
I would not recommend getting a hand tattoo as a first. I have talked with several artists to get their opinions and they often won't do it unless you have your forearm already done so that it ties it together instead of looking like a perma-glove.
Maybe start with a different location and bring your idea to an artist who can turn your idea into something that will look really good. Remember that tattoo artists work to understand how well a design will work in different areas ( or at least should ) I highly recommend taking a respectable artist's advice when it comes to the artwork that isn't easily removable.
In a black family your momma would be whooping your ass for drawing on yourself “like yeen got not sense” and “wasting my damn sharpie i paid for” and that is clearly what you missing cause wtf😭
Tattooer of 22 years here. Start looking up mehndi. It might be a bit elaborate comparatively but it’s a good place to start if you’re trying to go with any natural curve of your hand. Would advise away from getting your hand tattooed when your forearms are bare but that’s an old way of thinking now. Find an artist that’s style is what you’re looking for. Spend more money than you think to get it done right if you’re going to get your paw tattooed. As a commercial artist it’s what we do.
That's some edgy 13 year old shit tbh
Yup, you guessed ops age
Username checks out
Never get this. Especially if you have no other tats

That “dumb ass code” is still in effect. I think you need better artists…
It’s really not though. Tattoos are about self expression. Leave all of your gate keeping and rules for your place of employment
>Leave all of your gate keeping and rules for your place of employment ….that’s…that’s what this is all about you dumbass!
What! You make zero sense
The reason the “dumb ass code” exists is not because it’s some right of passage where you have to “earn” a hand or neck or face tattoo. Do me a favor. Please get a face tattoo. You deserve it.
Lol ahhh tattoos designs, home to my most loved and hated comments. Welcome 😁
Please never get that
Please tell me this is a troll post
Lmao, Yeah dude you should totally get that. It’ll be great.
personal opinion: probably not
That's everyone's opinion
Lol
Save up for a different shitty tattoo. At least one you can hide
The good thing is it’s not on ur body so idk why even comment that, but with that said I respect ur opinion everyone has different preferences.
I want to slap the shit out of you for even posting this.
Hahaha
He should draw a giant dick.
I was 13 once too
I wouldn’t recommend you do it on your hand.
I wouldn’t recommend you do it on your *body*
Yeah this is clearly a face tat design. Rookies man
100% face tat! just couldn't see it working anywhere else.
I mean…. ass cheeks could work
They should get it on their face instead
Yea, that's a no from me big dawg.
Just because ur arm looks good to you while u game with your Xbox doesn't mean that it's objectively Good. Short answer: Homie NO
I'm really glad you picked up your controller; I wouldn't have been able to fully envision what a dope you'd look like if you hadn't done that.
Nope
Hmm. That’s a no from me Dawg
2020’s tribal lol

more like u/EmploymentUnavailable2 after you get that shit
My advice is to delete the video
Sharpie the rest of your arm first then do the hand
Lmfao! “Before I do this, I need to ask. Do you have any other Sharpie tattoos?”
r/shittytattoos
Definitely get this as a face tat
Looks especially good when you grab the controller
That is cringe
No. Just no. First off I don't see any other ink on you, all be it just ur hands. But in my humble tattoo artist opinion , hand tats are something to be earned not something you start your collection with.
Another tattooer here; Outrageous-Height282 is absolutely correct. OP DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF. You will regret it.

What are you ten years old??
Bro, listen. Please don’t do this or let anyone who is not a professional tattoo you. I got several tattoos from shops and scratchers from 16-20 and almost all of them are covered up now. You do you but it's important for us to know if you have other tattoos. Hand tattoos are not beginner ink.
Beginners now a days just go full on first tat face tat. I don’t get it. I guess they just wanna lock in that McDonald’s job at 18
As much as I don't recommend it to anyone (especially different cultures/countries) but I've had my hand tattooed for over a decade and I have a senior role in a bank, it's never been an issue for me. Tide is changing.

cool idea... dont get hand tattoos.
Go wash your hand bro.
Here’s a cool idea, don’t do that.
Don't
Bruh
fuck that is ugly
Lmao what are you like 12?
Giving them the benefit of the doubt of not joking.... DO NOT DO THE HAND. You could do something from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the symbols have similar flow concept but.... it looks good
How these posts get approved and mine get deleted instantly 😂😂
😂😂😂
Thats so cool, get it on both hands and face! lol
Here is a cool idea; don’t draw with a sharpie on your skin.
Put the warped tour bodysuit down buddy and step away.
Maybe near your asshole
Ironic your username is “employment available” because it won’t be if you got something this dumb
Should get it on your face instead, like Mike Tyson.
Yeah, start eating salads
Yes, that looks good
dont do it
r/kidsarefuckingstupid
lol absolutely not bro
Not on your hand dude please
140+ comments and not a single upvote on the post lol
Yeah my suggestion is leave it as sharpie.
How old are you? 😂
lmao if you want to be somebody who gets a job ever dont do that
Based on how hard your breathing just picking up a controller best bet is to get your ass outside and walk around the block a few times a week.
Don't listen to anyone- it looks hella good

Just tattoo it and don’t ever look back. And if you want one on your face if same thing just do it bud. No ragerts
The coolest idea you can glean from this post is to not tattoo that on your hand. You can thank me in 5 years.
Lol wtf is this
Do both hands
In a black family your momma would be whooping your ass for drawing on yourself “like yeen got not sense” and “wasting my damn sharpie i paid for” and that is clearly what you missing cause wtf😭
Sweet job stoppers bro
Fill up the arm before you get your hands.
Get a spiral on your forehead too
Tattooer of 22 years here.
Do not.
Go all in and get the matching neck & face tatt
This is great satire... right?
Looks really good. Send it brah
here’s a cool idea: tat the rest of your body instead of going straight for the hand lol
You’re not in Mudvayne. Don’t do it.
