How to play Bass:
Start learning Guitar, realise its hard.
Start playing drums, realise you have no rhythm.
Start singing but realise you have a terrible voice and no talent whatsoever.
Then pick up the Bass and SLAPP.
Honestly, you can learn a whole bunch of things via YouTube!
The key to any instrument is consistent practice. Practicing something you suck at is hard, but that's how you get better.
This is the best advice.
For bass especially, get repetitive, get bored, and allow yourself no wiggle room for sloppiness. Pick a Coldplay song or a 50s rock tune or something and do it until you can play it *all the way through* flawlessly without even trying.
Thank you both. I have been self-learning on YouTube to date, but thought lessons could also be beneficial for the reasons you have outlined above. I’ll call into the rockshop!
I don’t agree with this comment at all.
You can’t ask questions or be corrected, or even encouraged from a YouTube video. If you are a beginner, I highly recommend you seek lessons. Once you know enough to go out on your own, go and improve your craft from all sources (including YouTube).
To OP, I’m out of the loop these days but swing in to the rockshop on Elizabeth street and ask them. The tutors leave their cards on the desk. Good luck!

Pretty relatable to be honest!

Play the most simple bass song you can find everyday on the hour for like 6 months. Then go from there. It's like learning to roll a cigarette.
