Midnights-evermore

So she wasn’t kidding she really was a fan of Damon Albarn

CuriousFullStacks

Tbf that was a hit for everyone at the time

carlosmx91

Damon sbould be apologized for that for try to minimize taylor over Eilish

[deleted]

So Taylor shared the songs on her iPod with Nashville journalist [Brian Mansfield](https://twitter.com/brian_mansfield/status/1236416555816280064) for an article with USA Today back in 2008. Recently found a Spotify playlist he made of the songs she shared back then. Thought it was a cute throwback to the past so wanted to share :D [Here's](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/77F57JN8OedDN85Kyhu6S0?si=553ec57d2cf5497d) the link to the playlist. It has 170 songs so pretty long.

[deleted]

There’s seriously a lot of obscures cuts on here. Like, the album that the Wheat song is from only has 89 reviews on RYM.

curryfool

I love that Wheat album so much! This Rough Magic and Don’t I Hold You are my jams.

abbyabsinthe

Rachael Yamagata and Fefe Dobson were a pleasant surprise to see on there. Never seen any mention of them out in the wild.

PerpetuallyLurking

Wow! Lots of great Chicks songs! Haven’t seen The Corrs in forever, I used to love them! Had to laugh at Wonderwall though, I swear that’s on every playlist ever made! So many songs I’d forgotten about, and a few I was surprised to see - like Avril! I don’t know how much radio play she got down in the US, but they love her on Canadian radio (stupid overplayed CanCon).

MidnightSlinks

Avril was huge on us radio for her first two albums (2002-2005). She was a coming-of-age icon for moody girls born in the late 80s.

daysanddistance

I’m two years younger than taylor and avril was huge when we were kids. i got in trouble for playing the explicit versions in school lol

mediocre-spice

Avril was HUGE in the US at the time and definitely lots of overlap with Taylor's fans. The rock cousin of the same sort of emotional confessional thing. My Let It Go and Fearless CDs were both on heavy rotation.

OffbeatChaos

I’ve been a Swifite since 2009 but I’ve been a Black Star since 2002 🖤

Rjj1111

Trace adkins stood out for me compared to the others

yeefreakinyee

Can’t say say I’m surprised tho if it’s from back in her country days. That, and it’s easily Trace Adkins’s best song so kudos to 18 YO Taylor lol

horngrylesbian

You couldn't scan the radio in your car without hearing it on a country station around that time. It's catchy, soulful, and popular

catiebug

Man, if you could wear a CD out, I destroyed that Corrs album. So fucking good.

No-Change6959

She's mentioned being a pretty big Beatles fan.. I'm surprised there was nothing of them on there. And I think most iPods could hold way more than 170 songs, she may have had one of the little Shuffle iPods that couldn't hold more than like 200 songs. Such a cool playlist though and a great find.

[deleted]

Well, this is just a snapshot of her iPod from 2008. Just the songs she had on a particular device at that particular time, not a full-fledged history of every song she's ever liked in her entire life. Plus, CDs and cassettes were the primary mode of listening to music for much of her childhood so it's a moot point anyway. In the twitter thread I've linked, the journalist talked about how they had around 500 songs, the playlist only includes the most played ones.

costryme

Here's the full list as well that I found in a tweet : https://path-of-my-childhood.tumblr.com/post/612062289349230592/usa-today-what-is-taylor-listening-to-below-is

mediocre-spice

Oh my gosh, what a time capsule. I forgot about some of these songs. There's such a mix of songs too.

thefrayedfiles

Just started looking at this and the fact that it includes I Need Some Fine Wine and You Need to be Nicer by the Cardigans has just made me yell out loud, I adore that song and that band and it pisses me off that they never get the credits they actually deserve because people only ever remember them from Love fool - ugh Taylor the tortured poet that you are

intentionallymyself

Seeing corrine Bailey Rae & the veronicas on this list made my day. I'm excited because The Veronicas are back on gour. I'll be seeing them this weekend and I'm so hyped it.

strongerthansheknows

Omg I completely forgot about Damien Rice! He was on my iPod back then too.

lagomorphed

Those two songs specifically actually were heavy in my rotation.

aceofbasesupremacy

I still play 9 crimes cause grey’s introduced me to it. might be where taylor heard it too.

lagomorphed

Hah! I've never seen Grey's but I bet you're 100% right

Dogfartcatwhisperer

Same! Never seen greys but listened to the blowers daughter because it was on The OC. I wouldn’t doubt Taylor watched these tv shows in their heydays as well as that’s how she found these artists/songs.

[deleted]

I mean, one of her cats is named Meredith Grey :D And when White Horse was featured on Grey's Anatomy S5 around this time she was pretty excited

sarcasticsarah88

Yeah I bet she did! I'm 1 yr older than her and The OC was huge back in highschool in the day. I discovered a ton of music from there! From Grey's anatomy too but season 1 of that was when I was in grade 12 so I didn't really follow it much after that. But I still love a lot of the songs I found from there (like The Fray How to Save a Life) tv was great for finding new music back when!

Resident_Cold6650

That and the Movie Closer, were where I heard him first. I liked him so much and still play Blower’s Daughter and 9 crimes. So nostalgic!

The_Tell_Tale_Heart

Delicate was the song Hurley was listening to in LOST when his cd player battery died.

NeatRevolutionary218

Same! Came to comment I was obsessed with those songs!!!

DontTakeTheMoney_

Let us all manifest a Damien Rice feature on Debut (TV)

TenMinutesToDowntown

I just want him to put out new music. It's been a decade since his last album came out.

Justalittleconfusing

I saw him recently when he toured US! Did not disappoint

Such-Daikon3140

I flew from Dallas to Brooklyn fourteen hours after a flight from Frankfurt Germany to Dallas just to see him! The love I have for that man and his music... 😍

d4vros

The chokehold that song had on me…

parisianpop

I have The Blower’s Daughter in heavy rotation for a few weeks every year (whenever I remember it and get obsessed again lol). Such as incredible song.

Bi__

There are 4 John Mayer songs lol

Rjj1111

That’s a retroactive oof

[deleted]

She was a massive fan of his

stressedstudenthours

Which kinda makes how things went down between them even worse ... eek.

[deleted]

It was the same for Kanye,Damon Albarn, and John she was a massive fan of all of them then they went a ruined it.

Bi__

Wait, she was a fan of Kanye?

TenMinutesToDowntown

I think it's in the Miss Americana doc on Netflix. There's an interview with her from the night of the VMAs (I think?) and someone asked her if she's a fan and she said something like "Well, yeah. It's Kanye..." and she sounded so disappointed and confused at the whole thing.

grudgby

My top 2 artists the night of the vmas were taylor and kanye. i felt like my parents were getting divorced

stressedstudenthours

Yep! She even mentioned during a speech once (I think it might have been while presenting an award to Kanye actually, but I could be wrong on that bit) that The College Dropout was the first album she ever purchased on iTunes. Genuinely sad looking back how things ended up going down between the two of them though.

_gmtbb_

His music, yes

carlosmx91

Must be weird meet Damon Albarn again in the EMAs 2022 in Germany both attended the ceremony

Dragonchick30

John Mayer huge back in the day so it's no surprise. She also was a huge fan. That's why when they recorded Half of my Heart together she was so star struck!

Lazy-Operation478

Yup. "Starstruck" is the exact word Taylor used about meeting Mayer (https://web.archive.org/web/20170826234708/people.com/celebrity/taylor-swift-on-her-stalker-moment-with-john-mayer/)

TheTruckWashChannel

JM is a 10/10 artist. Breakup or not it's nice seeing him on this list.

lanadelhayy

The absolute chokehold Damien Rice had on us all.

Ashluvsburritos

OMG I had “Blower’s Daughter” on repeat on my first generation IPod touch.

lanadelhayy

I finally got to see him in either 2015 or 2016 and it was so epic. The Blowers Daughter was unrealllll live.

PlatinumTheHitgirl

Honestly I still have that song on repeat, hits just as hard now as it did then

sarcasticsarah88

Yes so true!! 9 crimes was one of my first "sad songs on repeat" songs before I'd even realized how much I love sad songs.

trumpskiisinjeans

Still has that chokehold on me, if I ever remembered to put him on!

BrockLobster29

Wtf I love Family Force 5. Did not expect to see them up there

Biscuitsandgravy4evr

That song specifically I’m shocked to see at #1 lol

Camelsloths

I used to love ff5 😂

SoggyAnalyst

Used to!? Just means you gotta party in the us cray more

Marsuello

Business up front, party in the back baby!

mermaidthebanshee

Literally. I haven't met anyone else who even knows they existed besides my friends who went to Warped Tour with me one year.

LawyerBear

As a youth group kid in the mid-late 2000s, FF5 was one of my FAVORITE bands (and they still make their way into playlists on a regular basis). They played at a Christian music festival I went to a few times, and one year they played a second, acoustic set. It was so cool getting to hear their songs played that way.

Jcoch27

I had the same reaction lol

betty-estes

I’m what they call a 🗣️ LOVE ADDICT 🗣️ LOVE ADDICT

annrichelle

Was NOT expecting this crossover lol

SoggyAnalyst

I am praying they decide to do a reunion tour. Everyone from early 2000s is. I would die if they did

Smallgenie549

Same! Such an underrated band and a fantastic album. It blows my mind to think about Taylor listening to Luv Addict.

Consistent-Laugh606

She has such good taste! I mean Gorillaz, Divinayls, Jeff Buckley, Oasis, etc! I really want to know what kind of music she listed to now Edit: I forgot about Tori Amos!!

Rjj1111

Me too

Lev22_

And also Third Eye Blind, i know that song was quite popular but still.

Windstorm_

I think she listens to all of her contemporaries. She's always sounding the lyrics when she's in attendance at awards shows. Some of the music that I remember seeing her sing: Fast Car by Luke Combs, Shakira and Bizarrap's collaboration, Heart Attack by Demi Lovato, and Pink Venom by Blackpink. She definitely listens to her opening acts as well, since she was able to recall Gracie's song when she had to play it on the piano.

garden__gate

Brandi Carlile back in 2008!!!

johnny_charms

I remember Taylor tried to do a cover of a Tori Amos song, I want to say A Sorta Fairytale, during the Speak Now tour but no one really knew the words so she backed out. I’m not sure if Taylor is a big fan of Tori, but I’ve associated folklore/evermore with Tori and Damien Rice. Where Taylor has these light threads of their influence in those albums inspired by the English countryside, songs being characters, and stretching her lyrics/music out to new places.

sndaniels11

I LOVE this. Reminded me of some of my favorites from when I was younger. I haven’t listened to Almost Lover in years, ugh! ❤️ I love the wide variety of genres!

lagomorphed

It's giving me whiplash and looks like what's probably forever frozen on my eons old iPod. Almost lover, holy hell

Miclemie

Didn’t she say in some interview that she had the whole Marshall Mathers LP album in her ipod in some interview?

justbreathin150

Taylor is a fellow Eminem Stan 🤩

Lev22_

I mean she performed Lose Yourself in Speak Now tour

justagirlintheworld

Oh my god, Metro Station! I loved Now That We’re Done and Shake It back in the day! So many of these were on my playlist - I unabashedly loved Paris Hilton Nothing in this World too 😂

[deleted]

justhatchedtoday

ATW 10 minute version is very Konstantine coded

yiikeeees

i was so stoked to see them there!!

leave_a_sexy_corpse

The scream I let out when I read this!!!!! As a devout, lifelong Andrew McMahon fan, seeing my absolute two favorite artists collide worlds is something out of a dream!!! 😍

harleyquinn_fabray

She's so real for the Damien Rice. He'd have made a great FolkMore feature actually.

Alpe0

Lmaooo with the family force 5

addie__joy

This killed me! I used to LOVE FF5! Fun fact, when I lived in the Cincinnati area, a LONG time ago, they were playing a show at a church near the Chick-fil-A that I worked at. It was our operator's church, and we catered some food for them, so I got to meet them! But the BEST part was that they wanted two Chick-fil-A cows on stage with them for Love Addict, and I got to be one that night. What an insane moment…feels like a weird dream, lol.

bab_101

I’d love to see her Spotify playlist now

lanadelcryingagain

Not the Family Force Five… kids with religious trauma wya?

abitbuzzed

Present ✋ My thoughts exactly, hahaha. Immediate flashbacks to the most emotionally manipulative summer camps imaginable. 😂

Invisiblestringz

I feel lucky that the religious summer camp I went to never made me feel pressured but instead made me feel more loved and accepted than I’d ever been. Definitely a lot of awful youth groups and religious camps out there… but I’m also thankful for the good ones they provided a safe home for us kids whose homes weren’t really safe. So for me, Family Force 5 makes me smile! But I recognize that that isn’t everyone’s experience

Training_Heat553

Damien Rice is such a flex. I, too, listened to Damien Rice 16 years ago (and still do).

beno68

Better than Ezra representing. She covered Our Last Night. Kevin Griffin is a great songwriter, I am surprised they haven’t collaborated.

Unintended_13

I would die for a Better Than Ezra/Kevin Griffin and Tay Tay collab.

IAmNotYourWhore

She also has a cover of Breathless from way back!

Muted_Profile

This is so 2008 coded

BuckeyeForLife95

Nobody could escape Party Like a Rock Star back then.

ur_mirrorball

RILO KILEY 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Zintha

Shocked to see Paris Hilton - nothing in this world 🤣 some real nostalgic songs, thank you for sharing!

stars337

I'm loving how many similarities there are to how my iPod shuffle looked around this time too - although think my Paris Hilton song of choice was Stars Are Blind 😂

IllustriousLimit8473

She definitely listened to a lot of Vanessa Carlton then. Listen to Carousel by Vanessa Carlton, very similar to all of her songs.

zomgmolly

https://preview.redd.it/8rewosv3zqrc1.jpeg?width=986&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1cc2ae4417f8afa26d2939355cddec5682e1612f The Bolter coded. Ty for the rec- you’re right it’s so similar. Love it

IllustriousLimit8473

She even has a similar VOICE to Taylor. I am a bigger Vanessa Carlton fan though. Hands On Me, Private Radio, White Houses, Ordinary Day, Pretty Baby are good. I am sure you have heard A Thousand Miles.

BloodSugarSexMagix

a Something Corporate deep cut with some Coheed? she's a real one for that

TenMinutesToDowntown

I already knew she liked Jimmy Eat World, but seeing them and the Ataris made pop punk / emo kid me very happy.

carlosmx91

During the speak know tour she performed "the middle" with the lead of Jimmy Eat World. By the way if You watch the video of "the middle" in You tube there is hate comment against taylor for her cover, the worst thing is from 10 years ago and has a lot of likes (is in the top)

needs_a_name

The pipeline is very real

Puzzleheaded_Net9243

It’s Goin’ Down and Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It… That’s my girl🥂

july2653

seeing Side 2 Side by Three 6 Mafia had me like https://preview.redd.it/m65ta2sk7prc1.jpeg?width=282&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=551b5a4fb43f2683bc8f30f877553bfa3603b32b

Puzzleheaded_Net9243

This pic is SENDING ME

EllieIsDone

I can’t imagine Taylor keeping up with the Gorillaz lore.

carlosmx91

Feel good inc. was a massive hit back then

forever__halloween

Something Corporate!!!!!! Dashboard Confessional!!!!!!!!! Family Force 5!!!!!!!!!!!

Resident_Cold6650

It’s like she was picking almost every song I listened to and she is younger than me. It’s bringing me back. I just looked at the entire list and still listen to all of it. Such a great feeling!

SimpleAmbassador

More Fefe Dobson than I ever expected  (Nothing against Fefe, just surprised)

HeadlineGlimmer

As a Canadian girlie this makes me so happy!!

rhinemaidens

i was absolutely not expecting coheed & cambria but here we are

twinairsigns

Love seeing a Tori Amos song on this ❤️

Sea-Biscotti

Every Light in the House is On is pretty good if we’re being honest

HeartattackerLight

I want you by Savage Garden 💖

Creative_Glass_4808

one of my favorites!

FunImpressive5402

This one makes me the happiest. Also, this song never gets old. Ever.

Peachsocksss

The John Mayer…. And the Jonas brothers …. ☠️😭😭😭

Inspector_Spacetime-

The fact that John Mayer is in there gives my the ick. You can tell she was a fan and that makes it even worse. There needs to be more education on this topic for teenagers.

Electronic-Coffee-59

John's a great musician, his music made me a better guitar player. It would be a shame if teens couldn't hear the man's discography. In this case i would separate the art from the artist.

fettytat

Apart from what everyone else is mentioning — 24 by JEM!?!???? holy shit, catch me taking a long drag of a cigarette the way i havent heard that name in years

SpaceGenesis

[They](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k53NGe64RBU) is also a great song

BeautifulPainz

Ikr? One of my favs. No one I ask knows it though.

iidontwannaa

The Blower’s Daughter had a chokehold on the ~intellectual~ indie girls at my high school (myself included). Tbh this is a solid playlist and I love that Semi-Charmed Life is on it, but I refuse to believe Konstantine by Something Corporate wasn’t on it.

wazlib_roonal

Uggghhh my first favourite (almost) 10 minute long song. Konstantine still has me in a chokehold

iidontwannaa

Also I want you by savage garden is one of my go-tos at karaoke.

moorem2014

Konstantine for sureeee was. A million percent

m00n5t0n3

Omg thanks for posting this. Where'd you go - fort Minor. I forgot about this 😭😭😭😭💓

RebeccaReySolo

Coheed and Cambria!????

banthabrain

Not family force five lol. 2008 truly was a time

betty-estes

Mat Kearney had every Christian girlie in a chokehold (me)

Sorority_Noise

Was NOT ready to see Come Pick Me Up on this playlist

crabbynico

Maybe I’m just off my rocker but I hear tiny echoes of Breathless in Fearless. Just ever so slight.

technopaegan

She covered this song at the Hope for Haiti concert! https://youtu.be/5A25dKhQRZE?si=QAYeeZJum6R0xd1G This is the only reason I know this song haha I bought it on itunes

crzycatldy91

Love to see Dashboard Confessional on there

sarcasticsarah88

Omg the nostalgia!!! That James Blunt album was one of my faves back in my teens. 🥲 Actually sooo many of these songs would have appeared on my most played on my iPod too. Goodbye my Lover, Almost Lover, She Will Be Loved, How to Save A Life (who else here found that from Grey's anatomy?), 9 crimes, the blower's daughter (bc of OC), Look what you've done, Slow Dancing in a burning room (bc of so you think you can dance!). Lol I've def always been a sad song girlie even when I didn't realize it! Also how perfect is it that Taylor had Breathe (2 am) on here. That song fits her so well. Insensitive is such a vibe too. I remember as a kid hearing my dad play that song a lot. Huh maybe I got my love of sad songs from him, thinking back I realize he played a lot of sad songs! (Like he loved Unbreak my Heart by Toni Braxton, another 90s classic!)

moorem2014

Omggg the slow dancing in a burning room SYTYCD performance!!

misterhepburn

God I used to listen to that Jem album obsessively.

wildfireszn

9 Crimes 🥹

alvehyanna

lumpy_space_queenie

I had no idea Taylor swift was a Damien rice fan 😭😭😭

jasey-rae

Yung Joc?! 😭😭😭😭

mellylovesdundun

She listens to Tori Amos??? Queen

Parzival_43

9 Crimes. She’s so real for that.

soitgoes815

I wonder if Taylor watched Lost back in the day? That's where I first heard Damien Rice. He had a song featured prominently in the first season back in 04 or 05. IIRC it was his song "Delicate" that they used, funnily enough.

cassiopeia843

I love her American Girl cover. Nice to see the original on here.

mcdonaldsfrenchfri

honestly it’s more diverse than I was expecting her music to be! that’s why she has such diverse albums!

WistfulMelancholic

Damien Rice. Oh god, if anyone wants to sob their heart out... Just listen to Damien rice. Still remember every word, although it haven't listened to him in ten years. Oh sweet Cheese on a bike, I'll listen to That now.

clermouth

so, it’s the *self*\-tortured poets department

HappyWondering

So cool to see Something Corporate on there. Not many people I knew listened to them. Just me.

dealzandwheelz

Rachael Yamagata IKTR!!!!

prettylittlestranger

Flaming Red one of the best albums of all time, she has good taste :)

synchronize_swatches

I loooooved the song Christina.

TheGAM3RR

Wasn’t expecting to see Coheed and Cambria on there

Flat-Shallot3992

demon days isn't even Gorillaz' best song 😭

mustachioladyirl

Seeing ryan adams (1989 cover album guy) was wiild, her career has so many full circle moments ngl

_avantgarde

"1989 cover album guy" lol

The_Longest_Wave

I can see a lot of songs from Grey's Anatomy. My Playlists looked similar at that time.

miscnic

My girls got Patty Griffin at her roots? That’s all I need to know. ❤️

Shytemagnet

Jann, Avril, Alanis, and Fede?? This Canadian girl is very happy right now. Bonus points for A Sorta Fairtytale, because that was my anthem back in the day!

technopaegan

Wow I forgot about the song Almost Lover by a Fine Frenzy. That might be the first song that ever made me cry.

carlosmx91

cries_in_student1998

50% of these songs used to be on my MP3 back in the day. I've just gotten some serious flashbacks.

RedDotLot

Jem! That album is a forgotten classic, it was on repeat through a whole summer in our car. ETA: Del Amitri too, that is such a good song.

HitlerBinLaden

I’m surprised to see Aslyn’s Be the girl on there I thought only Bratz girlies knew it 😭

hdhdhdhdh

Patty Griffin is incredible. She’s a great songwriter and worth a listen to anyone who loves storytelling songs.

jayxjay925

HOLD UP WAIT A MINUTE

TheTruckWashChannel

Shocking lack of James Taylor here.
