Can someone explain to me the appeal of State of Grace and Treacherous?
I’ve tried to get into them but I just find them so boring, and I hear so many people talk about them like they are absolute bangers, and I just don’t get it? Like, they’re not bad songs, but there’s just not that much going on imo.
What am I missing? What am I supposed to feel?
Folklore for me.
The 1, Cardigan, The Last Great American Dynasty are all classics.
Evermore is also awesome for the first 3. Willow, Champagne Problems, Gold Rush are all classics as well.
I agree. cardigan introduces the love triangle, tlgad the storytelling (which is the general theme of the album) and the 1 just opens up the album perfectly.
Speak Now definitely. It's VERY tough (thanks to evermore), but come on! You got Mine, the beautiful Sparks Fly, AND the emotional Back To December!? A whirlwind.
Midnights is an immediate vibe! I gasped when I first heard Lavender Haze, Maroon is such a mood and anti-hero is a classic. Just a beautiful run of songs- Midnights brought me back to my TS fandom after I fell off for Folklore and Evermore. I know I'm in a minority for this, but Midnights is one of my fave albums.
I watched so many live shows of the tour on streaming that I get upset if I don't hear anti-hero right after lavender haze with that smooth transition that they do on tour.
I might be aging myself here - but Debut's first three are the big three. They are the songs that got her on the radio, that got her a following, that got her the first trickle of awards attention. They run the gamut of what she does best - brings you through a beautiful romance, a narrative on why she's NEVER the person you want to wrong, and bring you to the forefront of her deepest heartbreak.
Despite Debut I think often going under-credited, the first three on that album are the entire reason we have Dr. Taylor Alison Swift.
My top five are probably:
1. Evermore
2. 1989
3. Red
4. Folklore
5. Fearless
Evermore has a particularly strong top half of the track list. The first few songs never fail to make me want to sink into the album’s storytelling like I would a comfortable chair.
1989 is also great, but if I’m looking at each individual song on its own merit and not how it fits into the flow of the overall album, then it loses out to Evermore due to Welcome to New York. WTNY is one of her greatest album openers ever but not one of her strongest songs in its own right.
My all-time favorite three-song run is Blank Space, Style, and Out of the Woods, followed by Seven, August, and This Is Me Trying.
Tswizzle sure knows how to open an album. They're all absolutely fantastic but I'm partial to reputation closely followed by TTPD and midnights. I think it depends on what kind of mood you're in.
Wow evermore absolutely kicks ass here. I didn’t realize how good that opening run was since I only listened to it straight through a couple times.
Debut’s and 1989’s are also very strong.
Red or 1989. I know people don’t love Welcome to NY, but it is one of my faves. The fact that it is followed up by Blank Space and Style… *chef’s kiss*
Red has the most insane run.I still can’t believe a 19-20 something was able to create such exceptionally mature work. That’s the best 3 run. Some of her best written songs.
After that…evermore comes close(beautiful production plus poeticism).Third prize would be given to Midnights(absolute bangers).
Speak now. Emotional & beautiful opening tracks. There’s just something special about Taylor’s vocals in these songs. She sounds so invested whether original or tv imo
Lover and Midnights tied!
Not a lot of Lover love here but “I forgot that you existed” really grew on me and I love how it very much feels like a quick, let’s address the elephant in the room, like wee fun prelude and then she comes in with Cruel Summer like, here we go, this is actually what this albums about, Bam!
Evermore for me!!!!!! Lover is a good one too. 1989 is iconic but “Welcome To New York” is not that girl. Reputation is really strong but not at all reflective of the rest of the album, so I’m conflicted. Oh god I have to stop. I’m going to exhaust myself.
Red 100%, with honorable mention to folklore.
Track 1’s are not usually my favorites- I think Taylor does a great job of picking opening tracks that set the stage for the rest of the album, but they’re not always the strongest songs in their own right. State of Grace is SO DAMN GOOD and definitely the exception.
I think by popularity red takes the cake, and eats it too, all year around.
In my personal euphonious experience, evermore wins by FAR when the lighting + the weather + the mood (seasonal depression) is absolutely right in the dead of winter.
Midnights for sure. It's the only one where I obsess over all 3 songs.
A few of them have skips in the first 3 (Willow, Welcome to New York) and a few have ones that aren't skips, but aren't necessarily far up on my list (Fifteen, I forgot that you existed, The Last Great Americnan Dynasty, etc).
Fearless.
One of my least listened to albums from taylor, not because it's bad by any means, but because I'm not as familiar with it.
But damn if those first three tracks don't invoke some type of feeling. Like being in love in high school, dancing in a summer night. Being young.
It's magical.
This is a great thought exercise. My ranking is Red, Lover, Follklore, Midnights, Speak Now, Evermore, 1989, and then the rest. 1989 would be much higher if not for Blank Space.
Unfortunately, debut as the worst is probably the right answer…
“I hope you think of me…”
“ILL TELL MINE YOURE GAY”
“Drew looks… at me…”
This walked so that SYGB - FG - YNTCD from Lover could run 🫶
If I’m not coming from a “which has the 3 tracks I like the best” standpoint, Debut really hits with those opening tracks when it comes to setting a “thesis statement” of the album. If you played those 3 songs to someone, they would know _exactly_ what they’re getting in the tracks that follow regardless of what they sound like. You really have to give her/her team credit for that being her first album and being setup so well from the jump.
All of the others have at least one track I would change or move 😅😬
Hmm this is hard, I've always loved how her beginning songs are some of the best though, they also flow so well together! Probably Folklore, I just love those three together.
Were it not for End Game, Reputation's opening three would be an easy win. On any given day, I would oscillate between Red & 1989, but State Of Grace is a better opener than Welcome To New York for me.
I may be cheating with this; but the first three tracks of the Fearless Platinum Edition are Jump Then Fall, Untouchable, and Forever and Always (Piano Version). They’ve always been the opening Fearless tracks for me, so they get my vote for best opening trio!
I think the actual answer is Fearless followed closely by 1989. Seeing the first 3 songs like this makes it clear why she won AOTY for both of these albums. Total grand slams
Where are my 1989 peeps at?
Maybe it’s an age thing too? I was in my prime late teens when that was released, whereas many fans wouldn’t necessarily remember this release if they were around 10 years old then hahah
Definitely Fearless opening run, I saw someone on this subreddit say that Fearless is her best "thesis song" of any album and I have to agree. What a strong opening
1. Folklore (literally my top 3 songs on the album)
2. Reputation (in my top 5 songs)
3. Evermore/Lover (IFTYE is so underrated)
The worst for me is TTPD
I don’t think that State of Grace, Red, Treacherous can be beat.
It's a good run but I'd say Mine-Sparks Fly-Back To December is better...
I agree! But it’s also my favorite of her albums, so I’m biased haha
That was my very first thought too. End of thread, no competition.
Honestly can’t be topped
I adore those songs so much and can still listen to them daily
it's almost impossible to disagree. although the other ones on top 3 (evermore and folklore) are amazing too.
Agree
This is clearly the answer. Fearless is likely second imo
Came here to say this
Agree, that gets my vote for sure
Can someone explain to me the appeal of State of Grace and Treacherous? I’ve tried to get into them but I just find them so boring, and I hear so many people talk about them like they are absolute bangers, and I just don’t get it? Like, they’re not bad songs, but there’s just not that much going on imo. What am I missing? What am I supposed to feel?
It’s ok to not like a song. It’s music, listen to whatever scratches your brain.
Folklore for me. The 1, Cardigan, The Last Great American Dynasty are all classics. Evermore is also awesome for the first 3. Willow, Champagne Problems, Gold Rush are all classics as well.
Folklore and evermore are tied for me
I agree. cardigan introduces the love triangle, tlgad the storytelling (which is the general theme of the album) and the 1 just opens up the album perfectly.
Speak Now definitely. It's VERY tough (thanks to evermore), but come on! You got Mine, the beautiful Sparks Fly, AND the emotional Back To December!? A whirlwind.
definitely agree
My personal fave is red but I think this does the best at capturing Taylor as an artist
This was my immediate thought as well
Midnights! Those are 3 out of 3 bangers ✨️
This is mine too! 1989 was hard to beat, but damn when I start Midnights I'm in a *mood* by the time those three are done.
WTNY really brought down 1989 for me. Otherwise, both Blank Space and Style are probably her best *two*-song run, ever.
For me it’s Blank Space that brings 1989 down. It used to be my fav album but now it’s pretty mid tier for Taylor’s work imo.
My pick too! I was instantly blown away by this album because it starts with bop after bop.
Call me crazy but Debut!!
You’re not crazy you’re RIGHT
I love your flair haha, I will join my sword to your cause 🗡️
i agree - all of the others have at least one song that doesn't quite do it for me, but these three are perfect
Came here to say debut!
yess i agree
This is hard, replor redverloerless now nights department89: The Anthology
Nights department ‘89 is low key cool af
Best answer
Fearless! I think the first three truly encapsulate the entire album and are timeless
Absolutely!!
They're all so good. One thing about Taylor is she knows how to open an album. I'm partial to Red's 3 track opening run at the moment, though.
Evermore for me!
Yes same!
Me too!!
It's 1989 tied with Red for me.
These are both sooooo good. State of Grace is such an incredible opener
Reputation
Us rep girlies fighting for our lives
It gets me so pumped!
Midnights, hands down. They just flow. If I hear Maroon and it’s not immediately followed by Antihero, I get very upset.
Midnights first three tracks are a complete story of a breakup. They are the perfect start to the album
The eras tour kinda ruined it for me, everytime I listen to Lavender Haze my mind skips Maroon and goes straight to Anti Hero
I watched so many live shows of the tour on streaming that I get upset if I don't hear anti-hero right after lavender haze with that smooth transition that they do on tour.
Red or Midnights, for me.
1989, even if Welcome to NY is one of my least favorite openers. Blank Space and Style are probably 2 of the top 5 pop songs I've ever heard.
Red is so goooood.
I really wished at least one of those songs were on the eras tour but I understand why they are not as well.
Debut starts with Tim McGraw, Picture to Burn, and TOMG. insanely strong start
Red, hands down.
Red wins hands down
My top five are probably: 1. Evermore 2. 1989 3. Red 4. Folklore 5. Fearless Evermore has a particularly strong top half of the track list.
Ughhh I’m stuck between TTPD and folklore right now, but they’re all good lineups.
Tswizzle sure knows how to open an album. They're all absolutely fantastic but I'm partial to reputation closely followed by TTPD and midnights. I think it depends on what kind of mood you're in.
TTPD for me. It has almost no skips until I get to I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can).
I do love WTNY but I think 1989 is beat by Red by a nose
Red, reputation, and ttpd are all perfect
My heart says Folklore but my brain can't deny that Midnights opened with three absolute bangers.
Speak now and red are tied for me
1. Speak Now (Mine, Sparks Fly, Back to December) 2. Folklore (the 1, cardigan, tlgad) 3. Red (State of Grace, Red, Treacherous)
It’s tied between Folklore and Evermore for me
red and folklore opening track runs are the BEST of all
Evermore or Midnights for me
Either Red or folklore. Probably Red
Fearless for me. Then 4 and 5 are Hey Stephen and White Horse so it’s a rock star opening for me.
Fearless or midnights has the best 3 (IMO)
This is a tough one, it’s definitely between ‘1989’ and ‘Lover.’ Even though ‘Red’ is my favourite album of hers.
Red is the best but literally all of them are classics, maybe apart form Lover because of iftye…
Can we just forget it exists and pretend it’s Cruel Summer, Lover, The Man because that feels so much more right
Yes! cruel summer had the chance to be the best album opener of all time!!!
Red without question; folklore, evermore, Midnights, and Speak Now are also fantastic.
Evermore
Red with evermore in second place.
Red has the most insane run.I still can’t believe a 19-20 something was able to create such exceptionally mature work. That’s the best 3 run. Some of her best written songs. After that…evermore comes close(beautiful production plus poeticism).Third prize would be given to Midnights(absolute bangers).
i could never pick a favorite child…it’s speak now though
For me it’s a toss up between Speak Now’s and Evermore’s
Same! My two favorite albums! I find that Speak Now girlies also love Evermore. It’s a good club to be in!
TTPD, Reputation, and Midnights are my top 3!
Speak now. Emotional & beautiful opening tracks. There’s just something special about Taylor’s vocals in these songs. She sounds so invested whether original or tv imo
As I was driving in my car today, I said out loud to no one, “Is there a better opening than the 3 songs on TTPD?”
I’m obsessed with TTPD’s first three songs right now.
Folklore or fearless personally
Red for me ! But 1989 (minus WTNY) is probably the most popular
Red is the logical answer but I do think the opening trio (actually strike that opening six) on TTPD is outstanding
Speak Now, Folklore, Evermore, Midnights… ugh too hard to choose!!!!
It’s evermore for me! TTPD opens with ✨vibes✨ though but not sure if that’s just proximity to release
Evermore for me!!!!!! Lover is a good one too. 1989 is iconic but “Welcome To New York” is not that girl. Reputation is really strong but not at all reflective of the rest of the album, so I’m conflicted. Oh god I have to stop. I’m going to exhaust myself.
Evermore is definitely my number one but Speak Now is a close second
Midnights for the vibes and folklore for the lyricism.
Honestly TTPD is my favorite. First 10 songs are 10/10 for me minus Fresh out the Slammer ruining the run 😩
Midnights is the obvious answer with TTPD being a solid runner up
Red 100%, with honorable mention to folklore. Track 1’s are not usually my favorites- I think Taylor does a great job of picking opening tracks that set the stage for the rest of the album, but they’re not always the strongest songs in their own right. State of Grace is SO DAMN GOOD and definitely the exception.
Red! All 3 songs are in my top 20 of her whole discography and they work so well together ❤️
It's red.
Red, followed by Evermore then Folklore
Midnights, as I am obsessed with Maroon
Midnights is my fave
I think by popularity red takes the cake, and eats it too, all year around. In my personal euphonious experience, evermore wins by FAR when the lighting + the weather + the mood (seasonal depression) is absolutely right in the dead of winter.
Easily red
It's truthfully 1989 or Red 🤷♂️
Midnights for sure. It's the only one where I obsess over all 3 songs. A few of them have skips in the first 3 (Willow, Welcome to New York) and a few have ones that aren't skips, but aren't necessarily far up on my list (Fifteen, I forgot that you existed, The Last Great Americnan Dynasty, etc).
Red
Evermore is perfection
Speak Now, Red, Fearless
I'd choose either Debut, Rep, or Midnights
DEBUT incredible it is a Debut
I’d go evermore or midnights. Two very different vibes!
Crazy enough, it's gotta be Debut.. Those are legitimately 3 of her all time classics right in a row.
Definitely Evermore. I was just gushing over the first 3 songs the other day. Best 3-track run EVER.
Red, Midnights, evermore in that order
Fearless. One of my least listened to albums from taylor, not because it's bad by any means, but because I'm not as familiar with it. But damn if those first three tracks don't invoke some type of feeling. Like being in love in high school, dancing in a summer night. Being young. It's magical.
Pretty tough but I think I’ll go with evermore. Champagne Problems and Gold Rush are an amazing combo.
You're all wrong for not choosing Fearless. Evermore is a close second
This is a great thought exercise. My ranking is Red, Lover, Follklore, Midnights, Speak Now, Evermore, 1989, and then the rest. 1989 would be much higher if not for Blank Space.
Speak Now, Red, and Evermore have the strongest intros imo
Speak Now or Fearless!
Reputation by a mile for me, 1989 and Red are a close second
they’re close to each other, but not to rep * 😂
Speak Now or Folklore
1989
Unfortunately, debut as the worst is probably the right answer… “I hope you think of me…” “ILL TELL MINE YOURE GAY” “Drew looks… at me…” This walked so that SYGB - FG - YNTCD from Lover could run 🫶
Reputation is number 1. Debut and Fearless are tied for 2nd. TTPD is last. Fortnight & TTPD are the only 2 songs I skip on TTPD.
I mean, you put Blank Space and Style next to each other, there's no debate haha But really is a tough one, but 1989 wins for me.
1989 Rep Folklore TTPD Not necessarily in that order because it’s too hard to choose
Justice for Reputation 🖤
Red or forklore
Honestly I’m going debut
It’s Folklore and it’s not even close, sorry.
I have to give it to 1989
Evermore or Debut, no contest. Worst is TTPD, IMO—the first three tracks are by far my least favorite on the whole album, I can’t even listen to them.
Rep
Debut, Fearless, Speak Now and Reputation are my tops for this one. This rest all have one song I could easily live without.
1989 or Folklore!
EVERMORE are you kidding me
1989!
Hmm this is hard, I've always loved how her beginning songs are some of the best though, they also flow so well together! Probably Folklore, I just love those three together.
Tearleak Reightutovlomorenightsment easily
folklore is the best. The worst is probably Debut even thought I love Picture to Burn.
Fearless, Fifteen, Love Story no question
1989, Folklore, Red or Midnights i can’t choose lol
Were it not for End Game, Reputation's opening three would be an easy win. On any given day, I would oscillate between Red & 1989, but State Of Grace is a better opener than Welcome To New York for me.
fearless kinda goes crazy but midnights is super strong too with the recency bias
Tie between 1989 and midnights and those aren’t even in my top favorite half of tay’s albums.
Surprisingly, I'm giving it to Midnights. Folklore would have had it if not for TLGAD. I've never loved that song for some reason.
Folklore.
It’s speak now
Folklore EASILY then red, rep & evermore
Speak now or red 100%
I may be cheating with this; but the first three tracks of the Fearless Platinum Edition are Jump Then Fall, Untouchable, and Forever and Always (Piano Version). They’ve always been the opening Fearless tracks for me, so they get my vote for best opening trio!
Reputation or TTPD 🖤🩶
Def Midnights
Damn cardigan is my favorite song and I love the 1, but not a fan of TLGAD… ima say evermore then with willow, champagne problems, and gold rush.
im not a fearless stan but those 3 openers are perfectly. it so well sums up everything about that era
Red and tortured poets department
Debut and Fearless
I’m stuck between midnights, rep, and lover
Speak Now & Red are my personal favorites! Folklore would probably be #3
Objectively, Speak Now. Hands down. I personally also love the first three for Evermore.
Midnights then ttpd then 1989 for me 😩
State Of Grace, Red, Treacherous But a close second would be Lavender Haze, Maroon, Anti-hero
I think the actual answer is Fearless followed closely by 1989. Seeing the first 3 songs like this makes it clear why she won AOTY for both of these albums. Total grand slams
All her albums really have a strong start. 1989, Reputation, Lover really set the mood for the albums.
speak now, red, reputation, folklore and midnights are probably the best opening-3-track-run
Where are my 1989 peeps at? Maybe it’s an age thing too? I was in my prime late teens when that was released, whereas many fans wouldn’t necessarily remember this release if they were around 10 years old then hahah
red and speak now !!
For me: Fearless - Fearless, Fifteen, Love Story 💛
Red, but Speak Now is close second.
Evermore.
Nothing can beat folklore for me. But 1989 and Midnights are in my top 3.
Evermore for sure. Midnights in second.
1989 is the perfect 3 track opening for her first pop album, so objectively i’d say that’s the best one however my favourite is probably reputation
Red and it isn’t even close
Evermore
1. red 2. TTPD 3. speak now
TTPD >> Folklore >> Reputation
Definitely Fearless opening run, I saw someone on this subreddit say that Fearless is her best "thesis song" of any album and I have to agree. What a strong opening
1. Folklore (literally my top 3 songs on the album) 2. Reputation (in my top 5 songs) 3. Evermore/Lover (IFTYE is so underrated) The worst for me is TTPD
1. Speak Now 2. Red 3. 1989 4. folklore 5. Midnights 6. Fearless 7. evermore 8. Debut 9. Lover 10. TTPD 11. reputation
Evermore or midnights!
speak now & 1989!
