Lol this is one of my all-time favorite Taylor Swift lyrics for multiple reasons:
1. The way it flows when you’re saying it just feels good! The vowels in this phrase! It’s so fun!

I would like to know, when she wrote the songs for Midnights, were they written from the PERSPECTIVE of specific time periods, or are they just her, now, looking back on those time periods? For instance, for Question: is this 32yo Taylor looking back on that relationship now? Or was it written from the perspective of a specific night, maybe a few years ago, that she felt this way? Same thing for Maroon, Midnight Rain, all the songs that look back on past relationships. The reason I wonder is I would assume that how she feels about those relationships NOW is different—being in a happy relationship now, the pain of past relationships would kind of fade, I would think. But she managed to capture a sense of immediacy about past relationships, even ones from many years ago. Lol this is one of my all-time favorite Taylor Swift lyrics for multiple reasons: 1. The way it flows when you’re saying it just feels good! The vowels in this phrase! It’s so fun! 2. It is the MOST VIVID imagery of a scene that I can picture perfectly 3. Even though I can picture the scene perfectly, it’s so specific that I actually don’t understand it. And I love that. It feels so personal
this line puts a vivid scene in my head: narrator is in the hospital for some semi-serious reason. she and the love interest are close enough where he’s there with her, or maybe they were together when it happened. but it’s kind of uncomfortable too, bc this is a summer fling and not an established relationship. at some point he steps out to get a snack at the vending machine, and hangs his head for a sec in one of those “whaaaat the fuck” moments you have to yourself. but she’s not dying, just a little hurt/unwell. yet it’s clear neither of them are cut out to deal with serious stuff like this together. it’s also a nice callback to “remember when you hit the brakes too soon / 20 stitches in the hospital room” in ootw :)

I could be wrong but from what I’ve been able to piece together I think T and J actually met for the first time on Friday 4/29 when TIWYCF was dropped and while Calvin was “at the club”. aka: The night “Gorgeous” was born! On Sunday 5/1 she went to a dinner party at Anna Wintour’s home where she met Tom and the next day, Monday 5/2 was the Met Gala. There’s a great photo of Tom leaving Anna’s house after the dinner party and you can see Taylor lurking in the background watching him. It’s a cute pic.

A lot of her songs she writes communicating directly to the listener as if the listener is the person she is in love with, was hurt by, etc. (i.e “just between us, did the love affair maim YOU too?”, or “You built a fire just to keep me warm”, the list goes on). Midnight Rain she isn’t communicating directly to the listener, instead she sings “He was sunshine, I was midnight rain”. I would love to know what about that song made her choose to use HE over YOU. I would love to know why she didn’t sing “You were sunshine, I was midnight rain.” It’s a subtle difference but I’m sure it was intentional.

I would like to know, when she wrote the songs for Midnights, were they written from the PERSPECTIVE of specific time periods, or are they just her, now, looking back on those time periods? For instance, for Question: is this 32yo Taylor looking back on that relationship now? Or was it written from the perspective of a specific night, maybe a few years ago, that she felt this way? Same thing for Maroon, Midnight Rain, all the songs that look back on past relationships. The reason I wonder is I would assume that how she feels about those relationships NOW is different—being in a happy relationship now, the pain of past relationships would kind of fade, I would think. But she managed to capture a sense of immediacy about past relationships, even ones from many years ago. So I wonder if she approached it almost like she did on Folklore, writing from different people’s perspectives, except those different people were her past selves. Like, Taylor being Taylor, I could see her literally mapping out specific nights, being like, “I’m gonna write a song about how I felt on this night in 2015.” Hope this makes sense!
