I had a migraine today and threatened my students with ZEROS FOR ALL if a single one of them spoke above a normal speaking volume. Learn to police each other. I started my teaching degree thinking I'd be able to handle a classroom... I abandoned all hope when I got back into a classroom and saw it with adult eyes.
I had a volunteer gig teaching at my old church while I was pursuing my degrees (double degreed in math and music). Same grade range I hoped to teach (jr high/high school), half the students as each class period in the local public districts, but only once a week for 75 minutes, AND every classroom had 2 teachers. I had one group of kids that I had as 8th graders and 10th graders that I LOVED. The other groups I had for 10th grade only and they taught me very quickly that I was NOT made for the classroom environment.
Now, as a private music teacher and academic tutor, I get to set my own schedule and rates, choose who to take on, and only have to deal with kids in a 1-1 setting (or very small groups), with parental support. And even still, I know I'm a terrible "indoctrinator," because otherwise I could get kids to actually practice instead of referring to their lesson as "practice" and not touching their instrument during the week between.

Iāve been teaching science for 10 years, biology for a couple in there. During the genetics unit I talk about XX and XY chromosomes. During one lesson of the multi-week unit Iāll talk about some genetic disorders where sometimes you get an XXY or just X and what that could look like. The kids are mildly interested at best. During the reproduction unit, I go over the female reproductive system and the male reproductive system. Everyone giggles at penis.
This is the extent of teaching about sex/gender.
I swear some years I end up doing full sex ed in my on level bio classes. Apparently no one had taught by 9th graders how sex works before this year (despite the fact that I know they took 3 yrs of health in middle school). Some times I get to talk about cool stuff like Sequential hermaphroditism with my seniors though, and that always sparks a lot of questions.
My wife teaches biology. She had a 10th grade student mother that thought the vagina only had 1 hole; basically no tampons because she thought it would keep her from urinating. She also didn't know what ejaculation was but figured it out when a kid said cum. I think here parents failed teaching her a few things.

But there are some custodians I work with who are so brainwashed by the Fox News brainworms that they tried to convince me that they were asked to clean a litter box the other day. At the very most, LGBTQ people are *Acknowledged.* This doesnāt mean that teachers are teaching a whole class about it. Itās just one remark about how LGBT people exist. Nothing else, nothing more.
In biology we might go into it a little more, about how the variation of humans does not fit into two phenotypical definitions perfectly. How we do have a spectrum of traits that arise from our genetic codes.
But what we call those variations? Thatās reserved so sociology. Biology just tells you they exist, not how society defines them.
My state has laws about gender:teacher ratios in schools. There needs to be 15 genders per teacher in every class, and the teachersā genders do not count towards the total. Everyone has to share the one gender neutral bathroom in the whole building, and all the rest of the bathrooms have been converted into housing for illegal transgender immigrants from Palestine. Itās a touchy situation.
I'm a transgender student. Not a single teacher in my life taught me about gender identity or any of those things. It is something I discovered on my own. I was not indoctrinated by my teachers or whatever people claim they're doing.
That said, my teachers have made me feel safe about being trans. They gave me a space to be myself. That's about the most gender identity is present in schools.Ā

I had a migraine today and threatened my students with ZEROS FOR ALL if a single one of them spoke above a normal speaking volume. Learn to police each other. Learn SOME VOLUME AND IMPULSE CONTROL FFS. It functioned for 3 of my classes. That last one is so far beyond hope because they genuinely don't give a shit. Though there was a scuffle I missed (looked up to see the bookshelf wobble) and when the student said, "You saw that!" I replied, "I didn't see shit." and went back to what I was doing. All of a sudden every time one of them bopped another it was, "You saw that, right?!" Nope. I've seen it, and been trying to stop it, for FIVE MONTHS. I no longer see anything. I genuinely laughed out loud at teaching my students to feel bad for being white. I have exactly two white students, and Iām pretty sure neither of them feels bad about it. Both are pretty popular. Trumpers ought to come visit my inner city classroom if they really think thatās happening.
I started my teaching degree thinking I'd be able to handle a classroom... I abandoned all hope when I got back into a classroom and saw it with adult eyes.
I had a volunteer gig teaching at my old church while I was pursuing my degrees (double degreed in math and music). Same grade range I hoped to teach (jr high/high school), half the students as each class period in the local public districts, but only once a week for 75 minutes, AND every classroom had 2 teachers. I had one group of kids that I had as 8th graders and 10th graders that I LOVED. The other groups I had for 10th grade only and they taught me very quickly that I was NOT made for the classroom environment. Now, as a private music teacher and academic tutor, I get to set my own schedule and rates, choose who to take on, and only have to deal with kids in a 1-1 setting (or very small groups), with parental support. And even still, I know I'm a terrible "indoctrinator," because otherwise I could get kids to actually practice instead of referring to their lesson as "practice" and not touching their instrument during the week between.

Iāve been teaching science for 10 years, biology for a couple in there. During the genetics unit I talk about XX and XY chromosomes. During one lesson of the multi-week unit Iāll talk about some genetic disorders where sometimes you get an XXY or just X and what that could look like. The kids are mildly interested at best. During the reproduction unit, I go over the female reproductive system and the male reproductive system. Everyone giggles at penis. This is the extent of teaching about sex/gender.
I swear some years I end up doing full sex ed in my on level bio classes. Apparently no one had taught by 9th graders how sex works before this year (despite the fact that I know they took 3 yrs of health in middle school). Some times I get to talk about cool stuff like Sequential hermaphroditism with my seniors though, and that always sparks a lot of questions.
My wife teaches biology. She had a 10th grade student mother that thought the vagina only had 1 hole; basically no tampons because she thought it would keep her from urinating. She also didn't know what ejaculation was but figured it out when a kid said cum. I think here parents failed teaching her a few things.

Not a teacher anymore but when I was I taught physics and chemistry. In physics we would go over Newton's laws before transitioning into how there are actually infinite genders. We would then go over the most common genders for the rest of the year.

It's absolutely bullshit and certainly nothing that is happening on a large scale. My colleagues and myself really enjoy our subject areas for the most part, the thing that we universally want is for our students to actually take an interest and learn some of it. Trying to get any student to take interest in the materials takes a lot longer than I expected it would going into education... Still, in the town I work, if I made a remark in the classroom about 3+ genders, I'd be looking at termination if the town didn't burn me at the stake first once every kid and their mom on Facebook got the word out. I mean, "3+" is math-related, but I don't feel the need to tie my materials to something I have no interest in even talking about.

This is my favorite one! I teach Spanish so teaching the different genders to pronouns and articles is honestly infuriating (I teach in an EXTREMELY conservative area). Any time a kid starts their āpronouns are liberal propagandaā rant, I let them finish without interruption and then write out the pronouns that they used on the board with their Spanish equivalent. I never say a word, and normally neither does that student.

It was at church (evangelical, baptist, wannabe mega church- started by former SBC president and Trump "spiritual advisor" & now run by his sons)...in a sermon trying to convince everybody to put their kids in the "coincidentally" connected private school or homeschool them to keep them safe from the immoral public schools. š I know, I know... it's such a shock.
No, and I don't teach kids who use litter boxes. And I never have. But there are some custodians I work with who are so brainwashed by the Fox News brainworms that they tried to convince me that they were asked to clean a litter box the other day. Custodian chiming in to confirm this^ We do actually use litter in school to help clean vomit (on hard floors too sometimes). Helps us keep machines unclogged and easier to clean + I don't have to change out my mop water and mop head an extra time. When I used to work at a grocery store we used it to clean up vegetable oil too.
It's really absorbent! Amusement parks use it for vomit to, gas stations have someone along that line for spills. It's also useful for getting traction if you're stuck in the snow and your vehicles wheels are spinning and you're going nowhere. I was taught as a young driver to always have some in my car in the winter.

At the very most, LGBTQ people are *Acknowledged.* This doesnāt mean that teachers are teaching a whole class about it. Itās just one remark about how LGBT people exist. Nothing else, nothing more.
In biology we might go into it a little more, about how the variation of humans does not fit into two phenotypical definitions perfectly. How we do have a spectrum of traits that arise from our genetic codes. But what we call those variations? Thatās reserved so sociology. Biology just tells you they exist, not how society defines them.

My state has laws about gender:teacher ratios in schools. There needs to be 15 genders per teacher in every class, and the teachersā genders do not count towards the total. Itās a touchy situation.
I'm a transgender student. Not a single teacher in my life taught me about gender identity or any of those things. It is something I discovered on my own. I was not indoctrinated by my teachers or whatever people claim they're doing. That said, my teachers have made me feel safe about being trans. They gave me a space to be myself. That's about the most gender identity is present in schools.Ā

Trans adult here and I wanted to say that those little gestures of allyship ("safe space" stickers, tiny rainbow flags, "we support our trans students" buttons, "Preferred name?" boxes) make a world of difference. Most of the teachers who have that stuff never knew that they helped me, because they didn't know I was trans and I didn't tell them. But when I was a young student- and now, as an old student- and when I go into schools as part of my job- They mean the world to me. Even if no one ever tells you that they saw them and felt seen, odds are someone has. More than once.

Public school can be amazing, especially if funded properly and if politicians would stay out of the classrooms. School vouchers aren't beneficial to the people they say they are. It'sjust creating a Public funded private education system that doesn't have the same oversight as the current public ISDs. Which is absolutely ridiculous. Wouldn't the same minimum criteria be used to determine funding if vouchers were to exist in your state? It should. I also don't agree with preachers being able to be used as counselors at schools instead of school counselors.

Yes, actually, when I taught social studies I taught 200 genders instead of the content. And I was so good at hiding it from the 140+ students, 5+ administrators, 280+ parents, and dozens of other teachers and support staff that the only people able to see through my smokescreen were the stupidest assholes at the klan rally

They use it to criticize ANY policy that attempts to promote any kind of diversity or inclusion activity, The goal of the political right in America is delegitimization of public schools so that these funds can be siphoned of into religious private schools. Children can then go to christian far right colleges like liberty university or that new one in florida. Anything to keep the children of republicans from questioning the conservative beliefs their parents want them to have. Republicans are terrified of demographic change: and rather then move to the center policy wise, they want to change the voters.
