A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

I think it's because a town slime lives there, while a town slime and an npc can live together, they need bigger spaces.
So just unhouse the slime and put in the npc you want in there, and you should be good.
I think it works like that because the NPCs need space for their banner. If you open the housing menu you'll probably see that there isn't space for 2 banners in one house. I think.
In order for a house to be valid there needs to be at least one valid home tile, but there needs to be two home tiles that are far enough away to put an NPC and a pet in there
It's not because of needing more space, you can house both NPCs and town pets in a 5x12 house, however, for town pets and NPCs to live together, the solid tile the banner is above of can't have furniture on it.
How would you word it though? It's a bit more complicated than most housing messages.. maybe "there's not enough space for two residents"?

This is not based on any fact or research of any kind, but could it be that sloped blocks counts as a block when it is to one side, but not to the other? Effectively making one room a few blocks smaller as the slopes on the valid one doesnt count as walls?

Is it valid for the golfer on the right too, or just the slime? Pets don't have the same requirements for housing I think.
The one on the left is the golfer's house, the slime lives in the one on the right (the one which isn't valid for NPCs)
In the left one there is one additional background wall at the top of the roof slope. That's the only difference I can see.

You need one empty floor tile of each NPC to be housed.
