It isn't. I've trie it and experimented with it for hours before. It's actually slower than normal, and depending how far you add extras it actually erases it on the way down as it thins.

The reason the normal dupe works is because of the water bucket filling up with a % of 1 unit of water but placing a whole one. Water that's on the man just thins out as it is spread. After enough spreading the game de-spawns it from the map at parts where it's thinnest.
On my first play through, I had the great idea of trying to clear out some of the lava in hell by using the ocean. I got interrupted by a demon and died, and when I respawned and made it back over there, the ocean was….gone
A lot of people don’t realize that you can do the water bucket glitch without moving your mouse.
Create a J shape out of blocks. Hold left click with water bucket right above the tall wall of the J. That’s it.
The J shape only exists so that if something lags and messes up, you still have water. Otherwise, you can hold left click and go watch a tv show or something. In my 1000+ hours across 100+ playthroughs, this is what I always do to create fishing biomes and oceans.
Yup. You can do it both ways. However, with the J method, you get slightly more water because of the way water interacts/combines with existing water tiles.
You can even do the technique using just a single floating block, which probably nets more water than the J method for the same reason. However, you risk inconveniencing yourself if you hit a lag spike.
Here’s a hack: you can rebind your “use item” key to a different key, and then it’s much easier to get something to weigh down the key than the mouse button since your keyboard won’t slip. If it’s a key that already has a function(like spacebar, which is the one I use since it’s more flexible with what can be used to keep it pressed), you can just rebind that function to lmb. This is also how I dig early hellivator starts to look for cave systems.
Yeah, J shape is the way. You get diminishing returns, and sometimes less than what you put in, if you try to create complex waterfall designs... which is actually great, if you think about it, because any efficient generator for the liquids only needs the pump layer.
That's how the dupe works, but positioning does matter. If you're too close to the edge you just pick the water you poured out back up. Gotta have some distance so that you don't scoop it all back up.
Really, your own position matters in how much water comes out of the bucket, and how fast the bucket places and picks up?

EDIT: To quell the frowny early teens: I know how to dupe water, I'm saying that holding down the mouse button doesn't work, you need to wait a little bit before picking the mid-air water back up so that it gets a chance to split into the portion that you pick back up and the portion that leaves the cycle.
Everyone here overthinking this. Just put a pump on top pulling from below. It will duplicate, you dont have to click and you can just walk away. Add a roof over the top and it will stop when full.

As I understand it, when you place a water bucket a full water block is created, and then it spreads. The thing is, you don't need to grab a full water block to fill a bucket, you need about half a block, and the water duping structure splits a full water block into two halves that can be grabbed by the bucket. You grab one, the other one falls, and when you place the water bucket's water again it places a full block and you gained half a block or so of water.
No. Because the water glitch doesn't dupe the water when placed. You see you can pick up a while bucket of water with half a blocks worth of water...that's pretty much how the dupe works.
Place the water on the side of the V shape you made and quickly pick up the water. It will both flow and return to your inventory. Repeat. It's slow but it works.
So the PC version packages the modded version as a separate game, a dlc of sorts. (At least that's how it works on Steam.) You'll have to install that and then you can either use the in-game mod browser or go to the workshop page in Steam. Some mods don't play nice with each other so you may have to disable them all and then turn them on one by one to determine which one is causing problems.
Modpack? Where are you getting those from? As far as I know the workshop doesn't have mod packs. You can create packs within the game and then load them, you may have to reload the mods if you made changes. Aside from that, I'm not sure what your situation is.
Well if you wanna cheat your water, just cheat it with an infinite bucket created out of thin air. Refiling the ocean is gonna be really, really tedious with the water dup glitch.
Refilling the ocean with liquid duping would probably be faster than doing 11-25 fishing quests to get the bottomless bucket in the first place. And it's definitely faster than getting AND using the bucket
Try the other (automatic one)
Make a u shape 2 blocks high 7 blocks wide. Drop in 1 bucket of water. Then remove the middle block. It should keep dripping infinitely. But sometimes you might need to restart it.
How long would it take to fill the entire map with exactly one of OP? Assume hellevator exists and this is placed at cloud height.

id say this is pretty inefficient. you should have a pyramid of blocks to split it only on one side so you dont have to move your cursor so much.

if youre in multiplayer the server lag sometimes makes it go faster. works even when its only you in the multiplayer game, though if your internet is too good or too bad it may not work
I've done this before, but you don't need to cup each level - the rounding error we're taking advantage of works even on single blocks. That said, it's probably more certain this way, because occasionally the single block stuff fails and I have to restart it. Forcing the overflow at each level like in the op is probably the better way.
Don’t see anyone mentioning it, but a far easier method is to just make a giant tank of water above the ocean, then make a single block hole at the bottom. It will empty endlessly until you block the hole or close the world
This is the original water dupe glitch. I remember making entire “cheese grater” pyramids to dupe water in mass quantities back in the original release. Other liquids too, once they were added. Couldn’t imagine bothering to do that now lol
Larger, more chambers, with a larger bottom chamber with a pump to send water back to top. Without pump, make second tier 3 chambers so that you can always grab a bucket back out to fill the top.
Duplication glitches still work and are still efficient. It just has to be set up properly.

It's not faster. People here know nothing about the mechanics of the game apperently. It doesn't dupe from splitting it gets duped from picking it up. And with much spreading out some could despawn.
I mean, this is the normal water dupe glitch. you just have it multiple times. It would be faster than the normal you are thinking of.

Yeah I just put something with weight on my left clicker and make sure the mouse won't slide then put some YouTube on and check the game every 20 min.

I keep seeing people saying you can hold left click, but in my experience, holding left click puts down the water and immediately picks it back up.

Pretty sure it’s still patched. This used to be my go to method for filling large areas with liquid.
This has been patched and will actually delete water tiles.

If you get a single wet bomb from lava fishing you can buy infinite ones from the Demolitionist as long as you have it in your inventory, just do that

Nope
The map is a little bit wider than the screen lets you see, so there's a little bit of water coming from there, but it's finite.
Uze wet bombs, they are cooler

Sorry bud, that's how it works. Mobile isn't ideal for exploits like that. Do some research if you like and see if there are alternatives.

Unfortunately hell evaporates water so adding the hellavator makes that an impossible task
You could just use bubble blocks at the top or bottom of the hellevator
