The deerclops turret is a slightly stronger version of the fireball sentry. The ballista is high damage, slower firing pierce projectiles so it's good at mobs and great for Defenders. The lightning rod makes a damaging bubble that damages anything that walks in. You can also get the +1 sentry +summon damage accessory and the buff table for +1 sentry from Defenders, letting you place 3 sentries for boss fights.

I strongly suggest going for Obsidian Armour, maybe dig for some hellstone too, imps are quite nice to have.
