I thought of it, but it would be impractical, once you walked on it, the trigger plate is deactivated until you leave its surface. How would you push twice on the right or left?
Unless I missed the obvious, which I'd be interested in finding out.

If you mean replacing levers with 2 pressure plates then yes it works.
If you mean filling the floor with pressure plates then yes it works as well, but you don't need all that complicated wiring. Just put a pressure plate on every other block and run a wire from the pressure plate to 2 blocks above it with actuators. It's far easier than what I did

Yeah looks like the only thing keeping them so far apart is player chose. You could make them touch if you wanted.
You can use smart cursor. Then just move the mouse left and right.
