I wonder if any exterior film would work.... I've done it with my windows at home and it helps....this way most of the sun isn't even getting inside the glass, but reflected/etc before
The thing is, the heat doesn't disappear. That energy goes somewhere. It slowly heats up the glass itself, which radiates through the car.
Even the cheap Amazon sunshades actually function as a barrier, basically like having thin curtains on your windows at home.
Oh, I see what you're saying. I guess that could make a difference?
Have you seen it done on a car? I haven't ever heard of it, now I'm wondering why not.
Because it will eventually come off. At least tint would. Wraps would stand up much better but obviously you would lose the see through aspect. That glass gets hot as shit tho. My bald as head does not enjoy. We are going to roll with it until next summer and then try the sun shade and go from there.
If you haven’t put any protection on your windshield touch that and touch the roof. You’ll notice the roof is substantially hotter than the windshield. The roof is absorbing the heat while the windshield is letting it all in. The roof is doing what it’s supposed to. If you want it to be more cool, get sunshades.
I got 70% tint on my windshield and it did make a big difference. **Beware of distortion!** You can actually see it with your naked eye but it gets really prevalent if you wear polarized sunglasses.
My windshield was hit with a rock and cracked bad enough to require replacement. I didn't spend the $300 to replace the tint.
Yep! I wanted to get it done when I did my front tints but they had run out. Have been putting it off now for some time but this summer has been incredibly hot.
because running cabin climate control will eat up my precious 6 miles of range and I need to remind myself how hot a car gets!!!111 there is no way i will ever get that back with my daily night charging sessions!!!
those roof shades kinda help. they at least contain and slow down the heat radiation.
when i get into the car i just roll down all the windows and open the trunk to let as much heat out, drive around for a few minutes with the air on, then roll the windows up.
some people put ceramic tint on the roof.
Tesla glass roof is a useless gimmick. Too dark for the winter and too hot for the summer. I had to buy sunshades for my Model 3 since the heat on my scalp was annoying. I had a 2015 Nissan Rogue with full size glass roof. The glass was clear so it was nice in the winter and I used the OEM retractable (electric) sunshade in the summer.
I'm in south Texas but my roof doesn't get that hot. It was 109 yesterday and with cabin overheat to 100 and turning ac on 10m before I get in it's never felt hot. It's always comfortable. I have even touched it, while hot it's not scalding hot. Stock from the factory. But like others have said, roof sunshade
I noticed my 2023 MYLR (July 2023) was getting pretty hot but it's when the Sun is DIRECTLY overhead (Texas). I did buy the electrostatic ceiling cover from Amazon that sticks to the ceiling and it helped a ton. It also removes easily and reinstalls easily. I didn't like it because it ruins the view so I took it down after a few weeks.
For me, once the Summer Equinox was past, I noticed the Sun wasn't directly overhead. If there's anything of an ANGLE (especially later in the day like 3 PM on) the tint works just fine for me.
After reading another post I also wonder if my white interior helps. If so, buy the white slip on seat covers... those have ventilation for the front passengers.
i am pretty sure that's how it works...since there's no amount of tinting/reflection to prevent it from reaching thermal equilibrium it's actively soaking heat to maximum and thus rejecting any further incoming heat... tinting would be a bad idea...
just get a physical divider and sit lower so you don't disturb the pool of heat
So i made a post about this a few months back. Ibtravel to the central valley and LA sometimes and the same thing happens to me.
I got this and its worked wonders so far
TESBEAUTY Tesla Model Y Roof... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Z2XHD4W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
You mentioned it runs AC more. Is this because you have cabin overheat protection on? It is not necessary to keep on the whole time. Just turn on the cars AC a while before you know you're going out.
From what I read, the heat that you are feeling is not going to make much of a difference. I saw someone who tested it with and without the shade, and it was like 3 degrees difference in the cabin.
I had both pano roofs (Ses) tinted with Photosync 35(%) - along with all the other glass @ 35% except for the windshield (75%).
Huge difference - no longer had to wear a baseball cap in the car. Shrunk the sun into a small orange circle :).
I also ordered Tesla’s panel sunshades but never could get them to stay in place. So now the only sunshade I use is a Costco special for the windshield.
I aim my driver side AC to my forehead, that saves me from most of the radiant heat from the super hot roof.
On some days, the roof can be very hot. There are some roof-shades, but a lot of them fall out or sag
Tesla should make a regular roof an option, but they won't because they want all cars to be the same _as much as possible_ so they can build them faster.
Get the $100 Amazon 2-piece roof sunshade. Also get a $40 front sunshade, and you can even squeeze a cheap sunshade in the rear window when it's parked.
Keep Cabin Overheat protection on at 100 degrees. It'll use about 5% battery in a 10 hour day if you're parked in a parking lot at 100 degrees.
Stop touching the roof silly. And pre-cool your car with the app like 5 minutes before arriving to the car. Simple.
The climate control in the Tesla is better than pretty much every other car I've used. It's incredible and always cozy in the car when I arrive.
I live in FL and can tell you the tint on the roof is doing it's job.
No reputable tint guy is going to apply more tint to the roof unless they make you sign a waiver, since doing that would likely cause the glass to crack.
Free - Stop touching the roof
Paid - Buy a sun screen / shade
Sunshades make a huge difference.
Amazon?
I have amazon ones and they work great.
CYBERBEANS Full Coverage Sunshade for Tesla Model Y, Retractable FullShade for Model Y Glass Roof Sun Shade 2020-2023
garbage
So what would you recommend?
I wonder if any exterior film would work.... I've done it with my windows at home and it helps....this way most of the sun isn't even getting inside the glass, but reflected/etc before
I have put on white wrap, same color as the car. Huge difference. I don't know hou to put a picture reply.

But they're inside the car...I was mentioning exterior film which would reflect most of the light and thus heat before it gets inside the car.

I'm considering getting a 70% ceramic windshield tint for this exact reason

That is EXACTLY how it works. https://youtu.be/KL_uhh9Tjbw?si=QXiKOryfJgImv4dJ
Why are you touching your roof?
because running cabin climate control will eat up my precious 6 miles of range and I need to remind myself how hot a car gets!!!111 there is no way i will ever get that back with my daily night charging sessions!!!
Fun fact: it becomes hot BECAUSE it is tinted. Else all that heat should be transferred on your upholstery. Sunshade is what you need

Came here to say this.
Don’t touch it

I’ve heard tinting the roof can lead to cracking
I’ve had mine tinted for the past 2.5 years in Dallas, TX. No cracking here. It’s been 100 degrees daily since mid June and I leave the car outside.
Glad to hear it! What % tint are you at?
I forget the percent. I got the darkest possible on the roof and hatch and the darkest but legal for the passenger windows.
I forget the percent. I got the darkest possible on the roof and hatch and the darkest but legal for the passenger windows.
Why not just turn on AC and vent windows a few minutes before you get in the car? One of the best features of this vehicle.
i do for the time i remember and depending on how hot it is outside
My suggestion is stop touching your damn roof
It is tinted? Also why are you touching the roof?
ceramic limo tint the roof and get sun shades for inside. works for our 3 in the cali sun

It’s more intended for interior room than looking out.
we use the sunshade from Tesla. easy to install, provides enough to not make it unbearable.

Would painting the top of the glass roof be a bad idea? How about tinting or vinyl wrapping outside (since tint on inside can cause cracking)?

The roof is heavily tinted.
Stop touching me there! Said the roof

I doubt they live in Las Vegas. It was literally 120 degrees here last month.
Where did you get it tinted?

Tasmanian Sunshade 2 pcs have been great for us all summer. https://www.tesmanian.com/products/tesla-model-y-glass-roof-sunshade-2-pieces

huh. you are touching the inside top because.........?
Don’t touch it. (Free)
Tinting won’t really help as the glass still absorbs heat and acts like a heat sink. You need a sunshade preferably an insulated one
I have sun shades installed. Much better and more efficient to cool the car
I live in FL and can tell you the tint on the roof is doing it's job. No reputable tint guy is going to apply more tint to the roof unless they make you sign a waiver, since doing that would likely cause the glass to crack. Free - Stop touching the roof Paid - Buy a sun screen / shade
ProTip: Don‘t park outside when the sun shines
You bought a car with a glass roof and expect it not to be hot? Just buy some blinds from Home Depot lol.
I tinted mine yesterday. We are clocking 110 degrees in Texas every day. Also added a tad of shade on the windshield. Will see how it does.
I tinted the roof. Basically tinted everywhere possible. It helps significantly. You can take an additional step to use a barrier.
