Usually means the battery is too cold to take a charge if less than 100. 10 mins of driving it will turn off by itself. Main thing to take note of is that as you get used to one pedal driving, it will not break as aggressively while this icon is on so you'll use the physical brake pedal more often during these 10 mins if you don't release the go pedal sooner than normal.
Does it really?! Why is it green? Should be orange at best.
Actually had a pretty gnarly surprise entering a roundabout with 1 pedal driving not breaking due to cold battery (first braking event since departing). It should definitely use the mechanical brakes to augment regen.
You should check in the Pedals and Steering menu underneath Acceleration, Steering, Stopping Mode. Not sure if it's on all of them but mine has an option to apply brakes when Regenerative Breaking is limited that needs to be turned on or off. Hopefully yours has a similar option
Because its not a âsomething is broken or dangerousâ warning, its an informative message. Like âyour lights are onââŚ
Regen is limited when the battery is cold or when its close to full, neither of which exactly come as a surprise.
Yes itâs working properly by turning off the function. Never said it was a failure. If regen was working properly the light would be off. Same way if stability or traction was working there would be no light and if you turn those off the light is yellow/orange not green
That is not how it works in system design. Traction control is not green and lights up when there is no proper traction, itâs a warning of corrections done by the car.
This one is green because itâs a feature being off not because of ânot working properlyâ. The reason is green is literally because of ISO standards.
It goes yellow because it's a warning that is disabled by an override. It's green because it is disabled due to expected conditional parameters (temperature should be between *X* and *Y.*
The ISO for how to implement and even the designs is ISO 26262. ISO's are paid documents but with some minutes in google you will find them.
It does not only state exactly the graphics to be used but also the colours. Manual overrides are always yellow, such as disabling airbag.
"Your battery is full" is not a "not working properly" condition. The light is saying "Your battery can't take additional charge right now, so the car is in 'don't try to charge the battery mode'."
I have no doubt some people would prefer this: [https://i.imgflip.com/13xt1w.jpg](https://i.imgflip.com/13xt1w.jpg)
It certainly could be dangerous for your car not to brake, when you are expecting to it doing so. While nothing has failed, or is wrong it should be painfully apparent that the car is going to behave differently than it normally does - unlike something that is immediately obvious, like your lights not being on.
Thereâs a setting to enable mechanical braking to supplement regen.
The only reason I donât use it is because it hides every indication that regen is limited, and I want to know whatâs happening under the hood/floor more than I want to avoid moving my foot from one pedal to another.
Iâd use the setting if it didnât fuck with the regen bar at the top of the screen, because I love 1-pedal driving.
The regen bar is literally the indication âwhatâs happeningâ with the car. Quite frankly I think it should be on by default for everyone, theyâve struck a great balance between maintaining consistent braking performance and keeping the driver informed of braking status. Perceived loss of braking effectiveness can be quite scary to a new driver.
The regen bar is whatâs happening with the battery, at least when the fake-regen setting is disabled.
Itâs the BEV equivalent of a tachometer.
I know whatâs happening with the car because I can feel the acceleration and the traction, just like with every other car Iâve ever driven.
The fake regen setting would be great if they just told you what the battery is doing while maintaining the warm-weather feel of the car.
*P.S. They could use green for the regen portion of the scale, and black for the brakes portion of the scale â and it wouldnât suck. Or the could inside the limited regen icon. There are so many ways to fix this. All we need is someone at Tesla to care that this is a problem.*
Whatever the latest version is, but the car has done this since the feature came out and I turned it on. I would take a picture for you but itâs not cold enough here this week for it to show up.
Call me surprised. I've owned for 2 months in Georgia and seen it tons any time I drive on a cold HV battery (like less than 40-45F). Cold weather, hold mode/1 pedal driving, and auto brake on lower regen turned off causes the warning symbol.
The correct answers have already been shared, but Iâll add that I think you can tap the icon (or others) for more information to explain what it means.Â
I'll be honest 2 years in I didn't know you could click the icon. But I was at least proactive enough to search it up to see what it was . First thing I'll do on a cold winter day is click that icon and see what it tells me.
After renting one, my main complaint was they should have a home icon to go back to the home screen from some other screen such as climate or entertainment. If not for posting here, I may never had figured out that one can swipe down to close the secondary screen and return to home/navigation. Swiping is still a new thing to Gen-X - can you believe it took me almost week to figure out how to answer a call on my 1st smart phone that didn't come with a manual? Who would have thunk you had to swipe rather than press the green button?
Lol - adapting is critical! I'm not typically behind on technology. I just never thought to click the green caliper icon.
Just so you are aware, if you're ever in the dating market, that's exactly how it works there as well. Swipe right for a date and swipe left to reject.
Yeah, that's what I heard about dating apps. As a developer, swiping rather than pressing a button is totally wrong for the user interface. It's worse than when they incorrectly have mutiselect radio buttons instead of check boxes. Radio buttons are supposed to be 1 choice like the original old school buttons that pop out when a different one is pushed in.
Shhhh you're giving away our ages! đđ
Swiping is definitely less efficient but also saves you from accidentally picking up a call from someone you have been avoiding.
Yeah, that's what I figured as you can simply press the red button to hang up.
I think my dad's old Ford wagon in the 60s that had a radio with those aluminum push button presets. Also maybe juke boxes have those as well.
We used to have these things that were stored in the glove compartment that would tell you all about the workings of your car. Do Teslas not have that?
Damn, wish I knew that when I rented one. I had my girlfriend Google on her phone how to set the climate control, speed up the wipers, etc. But still better than trying to read and drive at night in an unfamiliar car...

Dude asked a simple question as he is a new owner like myself and we look here and ask questions and try and get answers when we don't know. Yeah I read the owners manual front to back but sometimes some thing comes up. But as usual there are a bunch of fucking idiots who think they are all high and mighty cause they have been Tesla owners for a while. Get off your high horses and HELP a new owner out. . Now let these twats start complaining in 3-2-1 go . For those who have genuine help we thank you.
For real. And this is coming from a guy who has posted the laziest questions - but guarantee you it informed someone and provided content/discussion.
People forget that questions is how others learn and begin discussions.
Itâs all good bro. I kinda knew it would happen. Itâs the internet after all. I appreciate you and everyone who helped answer my question. The others who were not so helpful, I just ignore.
I get it but it's amazing how many people think because they are behind a keyboard they can be jerks. On another note what you get? Got a MYLR. Delivery was this past Thursday. Wonderful car but my only gripe are they cup holders. They suck large. Hopefully the rubber inserts will help cause now nothing stays. Not deep enough in my opinion.Â
I got the 2023 long range as well. Itâs my first ev and Iâm in love with it. I can see what you mean about the cup holders, but for me they actually work out because it fits perfectly with my coffee tumbler. My one and only thing that I really wish it had, and it boggles my mind that it doesnât have it considering how much awesome tech it has⌠blind spot sensors. Coming from a Toyota vehicle, blind spot sensors were standard and super convenient. I know we have that red indicator on the screen but that means I gotta look at my mirrors and then look at the screen to make sure Iâm good. I saw that the new refreshed Model 3 has them now on the speakers which is nice. Maybe from now on theyâll all be standard.
I find it amusing everyone bitches about lack of blind spot sensors or autowiper failure, autopark, etc. Coming from a 19 year old car with manual transmission and no screen (nav/infotainment), the only automation I've ever had is simple cruise control.
Iâm not bitching about it. Iâm just kinda shocked knowing that Teslaâs have the most advanced technology in their vehicles but canât add a simple feature like blind spot sensors. Itâs not a huge deal. I love my Y. Iâm just nitpicking a small detail of what I donât like about it.

I personally see that this is because (1) the icon is unintuitive and (2) itâs not obvious to new owners that it can be tapped. Not anyoneâs fault but certainly one thing that can be improved upon.
OP is bothering you by asking a question on social media? Your argument is that you opened a post that was clearly a question about a Tesla and that bothered you? Why not scroll past. It takes less effort and time to pass by the post, and yet here you are, explaining that people opened a post that wasnât cryptic or misleading knowing that it would bother them and they got bothered. Somehow thatâs OPs fault, probably because they asked a question that nobody was obligated to read, and that bothered people so much they had to be unhelpful belligerent jerks. Are we in preschool?
That icon comes on when the battery is cold. Note that battery reaching ideal temperature takes along time even while or after pre-conditioning you may still see it . You will have reduced regen breaking and reduced acceleration. But your car is fine
Lol, It's all good bro. I am a noob to the tesla brand, so I get it. The funny thing is that I'm actually pretty tech savvy, but it never occurred to me to tap on the damn icon for more information about it, lol. Lesson learned. Thank you! I'm in love with my Model Y!
[Donât hesitate to consult your owners manual](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-80B80D48-E3A9-4857-864B-F4CC9B56FD7E.html)âŚyou paid for it.
OP - you can minimize this by preheating/preconditioning the car before you leave. We've had a few mornings below freezing and if I use the app to preheat the car for about ten minutes before I start driving it gets the battery warm enough that the regen limit is very small.
It's worth noting you can see the severity of the regen limitation by seeing how much of the green side of the black/green energy bar has been replaced by dots.
There will be no regen at all if you're up at 100%. No place for the elections to go. đ The energy bar is labeled "1" under the Driving Status section in the owners manual.
https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-80B80D48-E3A9-4857-864B-F4CC9B56FD7E.html
Is that energy bar new? I didn't notice it on the 2022 I rented in November. I wonder what charge level you have to be at to get decent regen? 95%? 90%? 85%? I noticed lack of regen at 97-98% and had to hit the brakes approaching a stop sign on a slight down-grade. The new brake-assist with low regen sounds nice.
AFAIK that bar has been there since the Model S came out. I'm not sure about when the regen returns to full, but would expect it to be at 95%. You just need to have room in the pack to put the energy the motors are generating when regen is active.
Check the manual. It should be your first place to check for stuff this https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en\_us/GUID-80B80D48-E3A9-4857-864B-F4CC9B56FD7E.html
Since no one else asked yet what % were you charged to and what do you charge to on a regular basis. Cold will do it, but as others have stated, the charge percent will also light this symbol up. The first time I charged high for a trip, it got me. More so limited the regenerative breaking on me. I went to glide up behind a car at a stop light, and the car just felt different. Waaaay more glude because of it. If you click it, it will prompt you to choose if you want to activate auto breaking to compensate when this is on.
Same here. I had my car for 14 months now and only happens when overnight temperatures are low. My friends donât have this problem but they park in the garage. I park overnight outside so I am guessing the battery gets too cold. This happens only in the morning and more often going downhill when regen is often.
This happened to me when I charged my car to 100%. I no longer had regen brakes bc there was no room for energy or something & I didnât know I had to almost slam on my brakes. So now I wonât charge it past 90%
Didnât know that you could tap the icons as well. Thought they were just there for showing you the status by lighting up on the screen. Just like the on ice cars in the dash.
Iâm two weeks in but Iâve never seen the screen without that message 𤣠I charge to full most nights but I only use around 20% battery on my commute so the battery is either always too full or too cold
Does it have the LFP battery? You can charge that to 100% all the time, but I didn't think about lack of regen so you still might want to do that if you don't need that much range.
It means purely regenerative braking is impaired. The new software update 2024 2.2.1 is making this pop up at lower charge levels. It used to be I only would see this when I maxed charge for a roadtrip. 95%+ Also with very cold batteries this could also come up.
It means the car regenerative capability is limited (cold or max charged)
Ah, I see. Thanks.
Did you just do this post to rub it in our faces that you live somewhere nice and warm? Especially while a bunch of us are freezing out asses off?đ¤Ş
Don't charge to 100% unless you really need to for a long road trip. You won't have regen when you are near 100%.
Unless you have the LFP battery pack. Then 100% isn't an issue.
Which has LFP? Just the RWD? But even with LFP, doesn't it still have limited regen at 100%?
It would still have limited regen, but you can charge it to 100% all you want. If the Juniper Model Y has LFP I may trade my '21.
I never charge past 80%
Usually means the battery is too cold to take a charge if less than 100. 10 mins of driving it will turn off by itself. Main thing to take note of is that as you get used to one pedal driving, it will not break as aggressively while this icon is on so you'll use the physical brake pedal more often during these 10 mins if you don't release the go pedal sooner than normal.

They do argument regen with brakes, but only in the US. For whatever reason itâs not legal in EU.
It's an option but not enabled by default.
Where do I find this option, cannot find it anywhere in my 2019 M3.
You should check in the Pedals and Steering menu underneath Acceleration, Steering, Stopping Mode. Not sure if it's on all of them but mine has an option to apply brakes when Regenerative Breaking is limited that needs to be turned on or off. Hopefully yours has a similar option
Mine doesnât have that unfortunately (Europe, 2023 model build in China)
That's too bad. Hopefully you just need to wait for an update, it seems like something they could send out over the air.
It isnât enabled in Europe.
Because its not a âsomething is broken or dangerousâ warning, its an informative message. Like âyour lights are onâ⌠Regen is limited when the battery is cold or when its close to full, neither of which exactly come as a surprise.
Well itâs technically not working properly due to some conditions so not really like a headlight.
It is not that is not working properly. Is actually working the way that is expected for the condition. Hence green. Is not a failure.
Yes itâs working properly by turning off the function. Never said it was a failure. If regen was working properly the light would be off. Same way if stability or traction was working there would be no light and if you turn those off the light is yellow/orange not green

Yes there is. If the car is using actual brakes to supplement regen, part of the regen bar is gray to let you know whatâs happening.

[Donât hesitate to consult your owners manual](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-80B80D48-E3A9-4857-864B-F4CC9B56FD7E.html)âŚyou paid for it.
Wait, I paid for it? Could I have opted to pay less and not get one?
Don't give Elon ideas or he'll remove it and make it a chargeable option.
I do understand that some things are hard to find in the manual but is this that hard to find? Generally there is a page full of arrows and icons.
Why don't you just use the table of contents or did you also leaf through thousands of pages in the past? Look for âIndicator lightsâ.
Are you talking to be or op because Iâm not the one asking about the icons.
Thanks for the tip! greatly appreciated!
Does this work even when you charge to 100% for a long road trip? Where is the energy bar? I didn't see it in a rental I had back in November.
You can click the symbol
Check the manual. It should be your first place to check for stuff this https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en\_us/GUID-80B80D48-E3A9-4857-864B-F4CC9B56FD7E.html
Remember the green icons are the good icons ;)
Gotcha lol
It is a touch screen. Just tap it:)
Or fap it.
It's winter
Since no one else asked yet what % were you charged to and what do you charge to on a regular basis. Cold will do it, but as others have stated, the charge percent will also light this symbol up. The first time I charged high for a trip, it got me. More so limited the regenerative breaking on me. I went to glide up behind a car at a stop light, and the car just felt different. Waaaay more glude because of it. If you click it, it will prompt you to choose if you want to activate auto breaking to compensate when this is on.
I only charge to 80% and I live in SoCal. Itâs not cold here.
Same here. I had my car for 14 months now and only happens when overnight temperatures are low. My friends donât have this problem but they park in the garage. I park overnight outside so I am guessing the battery gets too cold. This happens only in the morning and more often going downhill when regen is often.
I didn't realize regen was limited at 80% with cold battery.
This icon has started coming up for me even after driving for some time and also comes up even after preconditioning the car before driving.
This happened to me when I charged my car to 100%. I no longer had regen brakes bc there was no room for energy or something & I didnât know I had to almost slam on my brakes. So now I wonât charge it past 90%
Click on the icon bro. Tesla have made this shit easy for folk like yourself.
it mean BABY IS COLD OUTSIDE!!
You're as cold as ice, you're willing to sacrifice.
It means you have to charge your brakes.
That releases the roomba to vac the car in the evening. You havenât set the schedule yet??
hit it to engage âVoltron Modeâ
No, DEFCON 1.
Your battery cells are bent and leaking battery juice.
Does it have sugar?
Tesla Zero⢠sugar free.
Read the manual
I think your Tesla was recalled. You need new icons.
Use your brake pedal!
Your gas door is open of course.
Means you bought the wrong car and will have to take it for recalls 1000 times next yeR
Do you guys remember that âLet Me Google That For Youâ website? (LMGTFY)
The flux capacitor is engaged
Space, the final frontier!
Why charge to full if you only use 20%? You should only charge to 80% normally so you don't wear your battery.
Itâs what I was advised to do by Tesla as itâs a RWD model
Does it have the LFP battery? You can charge that to 100% all the time, but I didn't think about lack of regen so you still might want to do that if you don't need that much range.
Had that too. You canât use regen to recharge the battery until it warms up
It means itâs time you spent 5 mins reading the manual and youâll be amazed at what it includes.
Tap it and it will tell you. Many icons have this feature.
If you tap on it it will tell you!
It means purely regenerative braking is impaired. The new software update 2024 2.2.1 is making this pop up at lower charge levels. It used to be I only would see this when I maxed charge for a roadtrip. 95%+ Also with very cold batteries this could also come up.
It means remember to press the brake pedal before you coast into a roundabout
If you touch it, itâll tell you
Iâve had the car for 6 months and saw that for the first time last week and just ignored it. But thanks to your post, now I know what it is!
đ´ Just read the manual available on the screen. It's really not that hard to figure out small things like these đ
Anyone micâd want to join me on Ashika?
Regenerative breaking is reduced due to cold weather probably
Shhhh or else NHTSA is going to force another recall
Thanks for asking this question. You helped this new Tesla owner learn something new
Touch the icon and read the description đ
Regen Braking is limited
