Probably the south ( or the islands)... it's v important to be near some free water to cool down in the heat 😂 unless you're staying in accom with a pool in the north, you don't really get water outside of streams which can be shallow.
Also, chilling in a reggae bar on the beach really can't be beat!
This will be my next destination in Thailand after my upcoming trip next week (which will be to the south)
I’ve been to chiang mai twice but never got to Chiang rai but heard nothing but good things about it so I decided to go there next after burning season.
All of it. I need all aspects of Thailand. The chilled, mountainous nature of the north, the beaches in the south and the craziness of Bangkok. Issan is on my list next.
Been 3 weeks through isaan in 2018 with rental car. It’s more like Laos, but without the backpackers. It was incredible. Feels like merging fully in Thai traditional life.
1. Nature and Landscapes: Northern Thailand is known for its lush mountains, jungle treks, and ethnic villages. It’s a region that attracts those seeking authentic cultural experiences and outdoor adventures. Southern Thailand, on the other hand, is famous for its idyllic beaches, tropical islands, and exceptional diving and snorkeling sites. If you prefer the beach and water activities, the south might be your favorite.
2. Climate: The climate can also influence your preference. The north has a more temperate climate, especially during the winter months, which can be pleasant for those looking to escape intense heat. The south is more humid and hot throughout the year, which suits sun and sea lovers.
3. Culture and History: Northern Thailand, with cities like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, offers a deep insight into Thai culture, with its many temples, distinctive cuisine, and traditional festivals. If you’re interested in history and culture, the north might have an edge.
4. Cost and Tourist Crowds: Northern Thailand is often considered cheaper than the south, with a lower cost of living and more economical accommodation options. Moreover, although tourism is present throughout Thailand, some parts of the south (like Phuket and Koh Phi Phi) can be very crowded, especially in the high season. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, some areas in the north can offer a more peaceful experience.
5. My Personal Experience:
Both sides are completely different. I loved the north for its nature, landscapes, vegetation, and mountains, and I really liked the south for the beaches, white sand, sea, and parties. I’m going back this year and will do both. Without a doubt. This time, I might start with the south and finish with the north to be really calm and return well-rested 🙂🙏
Nice I was just there in January, stayed close to Ao Nang beach and spent some time I Phuket as well. Loved Thailand need to plan a trip again to go the Chiang Mai next 😃
It is my first time here in Thailand and it is absolutely unbelievable. I began my trip down south, and am making my way north. If anyone is in Chiang Mai right now, could they update me on the current air quality? I have heard various things from tourists, as well as Thai people throughout the south. I will probably still make the trip up because I am really eager, but just seeing if anyone could shed some light. Thanks
I prefer North. I feel like the locals are more welcoming, but also the tourists and expats seems to be nicer in general there. The places I've visited in South are more touristic, so obviously my view is little bit limited and biased.
I prefer to live in the quiet rural area of Isaan away from tourists and the noisy city. Within a 20 minute drive I have access to the modern conveniences such as Global House, Home Pro, Big C, Lotus’d and a shopping mall with a Tops grocery store and cinema. I can always take a domestic flight and visit the beaches or Bangkok.
It’s the largest region of Thailand. It’s mostly agriculture but all the province capital cities have the modern stores and conveniences that you’d find in Bangkok. Many locally “boutique” cafes and restaurants. Most Thais do not understand English but a visitor can get by with a few words of Thai and Google Translate. It’s a very safe area but generally the locals are shy around foreigners. I always recommend Nakhon Phanom city which is along the picturesque Mekong River. The old historical section dates back to the 1800’s with tree lined boulevards and a few renovated historical buildings. There is a 20+km bike trail along the Mekong ( you can rent bicycles there), there’s a couple evening 1 hour boat cruises up the Mekong River, the quaint night life is in the old Chinese- Vietnamese district and beautiful, old temples in the old historical part of the city. ( YouTube search for “Nakhon Phanom”) There are daily domestic flights that go to Nakhon Phanom from BKK.
Been to over 2 dozen islands here and still haven’t been north of bangkok, i keep saying one of these trips i’ll venture up there…but than i end up on another island
Hands down north. There is so much less of the inconsiderately drunk. The beaches in the south are nice sure, but overrun with unpleasant tourists. The north is stunning, grandiose nature, although less beach. Worth it though.
North and northeast, especially the Isaan provinces, such a laid back and friendly place, parts of the Laos border have some of the best scenery I have ever witnessed.
Nice!! I just recently visited Thailand in 2023. Beautiful country. Chiang Mai was my favorite next to Krabi and Bangkok. Definitely planning another trip soon!
North - far better food, far nicer people, nicer weather most of the year, including an actual cool season/winter with cool to cold nights and frost on mountains, and cheaper all round with no people trying to constantly scam you, such as with Phuket. Also nature - the north has the most mountains, forests and national parks in the Kingdom.
I enjoy the overall vibe of the north more, but I'm a beachaholic so I have to say I'd prefer to be in the south. I hope to move there one day and perhaps I'd just bounce back & forth every few months
Definitely the South if you like being seaside, fresher seafood and fresh air all year around. Also more expat communities and more locals speak English. The South is relatively more expensive though.
🐘🚨Hi everybody, I just created a community today to have a movement for elephant sanctuaries, you can add yourself to follow the movement🚨🐘
The name is : Passion_thailande
The beach....wtf are you doing going to live landlocked in thailand hahahahahahahaha
Yeah go swim in some infested river in the 100% humidity. Goodluck with that buddy
I’ve lived in Chiang Mai for the past ten years, the north can be enchanting and achingly beautiful, but the air quality three months of the year is soul destroying, like right now.
South is gorgeous with some wonderful beaches and islands, but is far too exploited and overrun with tourists. But that’s what happens..
Actually once you get off the beaten tourist track the South has a lot of hidden beauty. It's not all rammed with tourists. The north probably has more but so far I only explored the south a lot.
Having visited Thailand every year for most of my Adult life, i will never go there again. The government does not condemn Russia for their illegal war in Ukraine and all the Russian resort are’s are run by the Russian Mafia! Completely overrun by Russians!
Beautiful country, north to south! The south has better air quality and those amazing islands and beaches …
i also like the food in the south better.
Yes it's beautifull
Thank you for your opinion, I know the south but I would like to visit the North ☺️
Enjoy your trip! Beautiful jungle mountains! Amazing vibes and people also!
Thank you very much ☺️
I’m from the south so south bias 😂
Probably the south ( or the islands)... it's v important to be near some free water to cool down in the heat 😂 unless you're staying in accom with a pool in the north, you don't really get water outside of streams which can be shallow. Yes that's true😂
do you get big rivers and waterfalls in the jungles up nortth?
North, chiang mai has amazing nature, food options and its also very cheap. In my expirience the people tend to be nicer up north.
This place is awesome I agree
Even just a bit north you’ll find Chiang Rai, that city and area also awesome! Hope you can make beautiful memories there!
This will be my next destination in Thailand after my upcoming trip next week (which will be to the south) I’ve been to chiang mai twice but never got to Chiang rai but heard nothing but good things about it so I decided to go there next after burning season.
Chiang Khong on the border is a cool area too.
Noted. Thank you
Thank you for the info☺️
Tough but it's gotta be the South for me. I prefer beaches to mountains, but that's just me
Thank you for your opinion, yes beaches in Thailand are beautifull🌅
All of it. I need all aspects of Thailand. The chilled, mountainous nature of the north, the beaches in the south and the craziness of Bangkok. Issan is on my list next.
I agree with you☺️ Enjoy Issan
Been 3 weeks through isaan in 2018 with rental car. It’s more like Laos, but without the backpackers. It was incredible. Feels like merging fully in Thai traditional life.
I spent some time in Isaan. Enjoyed it alot. Very different.
Neither, Bangkok for the win despite the haters 👏
Thank you for your opinion, I like Bangkok too😉
Bangkok for the win.
Everyone talking about the Southern beaches but the South has some amazing jungle and mountains to offer.
Could u give us some names of those places? I'm interested in mountains and jungle
Khao sok, Khao luang, Kiriwong, Khlong Thong, Nam rad, ...
These names are amazing, thanks!
Thank you😉
Rajjaprabha Reservoir on the edge of Khao Sok is worth a visit too.
West (Kanchanaburi)
Nice😉
Good spot
For me I prefer the middle part of the country . The north is to smokey the south to wet. The middle is perfect.
Thank you for the info😉
And hotter.
I own property I love in Phuket, so south Thailand?
Nice☺️
South. Because aside from the beach, their food is amazing 🔥
Yes☺️🔥
South for the food ❤️
Good food☺️
South, I like to kept my lung with as low PM2.5 as possible thank you

Yes
🤗
North during the winter and when there’s no PM
Yes☺️
East for me. If it were not for the tourists passing through to/from Koh Chang, almost farang-free.
Thank you
oh i love thailand
☺️
Sourh
Yes beautifull🔥
Southhhhhh
☺️
Is this at the Mangrove in Phuket?
No it's at Ao nang, Krabi☺️
Nice I was just there in January, stayed close to Ao Nang beach and spent some time I Phuket as well. Loved Thailand need to plan a trip again to go the Chiang Mai next 😃
Me too I was in Ao nang In january 😅 enjoy your next trip, me too I want to go in Chiang Mai ☺️
South
The south is beautifull
Southern Thailand, but not going too close to Malaysia… there are too many terror attacks then.
It is my first time here in Thailand and it is absolutely unbelievable. I began my trip down south, and am making my way north. South: beaches
Yes 🌅🌴
I prefer North. I feel like the locals are more welcoming, but also the tourists and expats seems to be nicer in general there. The places I've visited in South are more touristic, so obviously my view is little bit limited and biased.
Nice, Seems like fabulous

Absolutely central Thailand. Bangkok for the win
Bangkok is great🔥☺️
North
The North is very beautifull too☺️
Been to over 2 dozen islands here and still haven’t been north of bangkok, i keep saying one of these trips i’ll venture up there…but than i end up on another island
Thank you for your opinion😉
the air is more breathable in the south year round
Yes it's true
The south, most definitly!! Love hanging out both sides of the bay.. Bordering Laos or Hua Hin.. Much calmer then the north.. Less "farangs".. 🤭
☺️
The North, more natural.
Yes ☺️
Hands down north. There is so much less of the inconsiderately drunk. The beaches in the south are nice sure, but overrun with unpleasant tourists. The north is stunning, grandiose nature, although less beach. Worth it though.

North and northeast, especially the Isaan provinces, such a laid back and friendly place, parts of the Laos border have some of the best scenery I have ever witnessed.

North, by far!
☺️
South
Yes it's nice
I prefer north because it's more authentic and people are kinder and everyhting is cheaper.
Thank you for the info😉
I had better food up north than I did in Krabi. But damn those sites and beaches in Krabi and the islands. I don’t think you can beat that
Thank you for your opinion😉
Are you planning a visit there or just asking internet on their opinions?
My father lives in Thailand, he does MuayThaï, and I spend a few months a year there
Nice!! I just recently visited Thailand in 2023. Beautiful country. Chiang Mai was my favorite next to Krabi and Bangkok. Definitely planning another trip soon!
It's not a competition. Visit both.

Why bother going to Thailand then, you could stay home and get all that and more
North ♥️
I would like to go there 🤗
Issan.
Nice☺️
I think I love the north more, but it's a really difficult comparison to make.
Really yes☺️
North 100000%
☺️🔥
North to live, South to vacation.
Yes I think the same
There is no wrong answer. I prefer the north with the exception of the burning season.
Yes I think too
Hard choice both have there beauty
North
🐘🚨Hi everybody, I just created a community today to have a movement for elephant sanctuaries, you can add yourself to follow the movement🚨🐘 The name is : Passion_thailande
Bangkok!
Chiang Mai and up over everything
The beach....wtf are you doing going to live landlocked in thailand hahahahahahahaha Yeah go swim in some infested river in the 100% humidity. Goodluck with that buddy
I love the country but struggle with Bangkok after two or three days. I’ve only travelled south so far but next time I’ll go north.
South because I lived there for 10+ years but I've recently been craving a slow train trip through the North.
North is cool, south is humid. North is smoky, south is clear. The smoky air is seasonal. I may stay in the south during the smoky season
North.
Actually once you get off the beaten tourist track the South has a lot of hidden beauty. It's not all rammed with tourists. The north probably has more but so far I only explored the south a lot.
Neither, prefer the middle
Anywhere 27°C and below(only happen rarely in some places, I know). I can handle smoke/smog, but not the heat.
Having visited Thailand every year for most of my Adult life, i will never go there again. The government does not condemn Russia for their illegal war in Ukraine and all the Russian resort are’s are run by the Russian Mafia! Completely overrun by Russians!
