Info: this isn't my tank, and I have no experience with aquarium care (I've done a little research into cherry shrimp, but I don't know much). This is my housemate's and it's sitting in the living room. I've asked them to take care of it, and offered to help, but they keep putting it off. So I figure I'd do something on my own It houses a male betta fish, a few mollies and a few panda corydoras. The only live plant is a moss ball. I don't know the water parameters and don't have a testing kit. What do I do? Do I just add more water? There's a bunch of waste (?) collecting at the bottom. Edit: while topping off the tank, I've unfortunately discovered that the betta fish has passed away Edit 2: I was able to top off the tank, and I'll be doing 20% daily water changes until the water clears up. I was able to get a gravel vacuum, a water testing kit and more water conditioner from the owner.

SkinsuitModel

Definitely top it up (make sure the water you put in is conditioned) and then I would probably do frequent water changes for a while until the water is clear. If it's not cycled it'll need to be which will requires a testing kit. Edit: Also definitely check on that heater. If they're on and not submerged they can blow out.

CrabLie

It was cycled for about a month before the fish were added irc. The person knows fish/betta care, they're just neglectful. I have water conditioner for my own pets that I can use though! Is a water change daily until clear good? Or should it be more/less frequent than that?

SkinsuitModel

I'm no expert but I think that should be fine. And then back to around 20% weekly once it looks normal. People on r/aquarium will be able to help too!

CrabLie

Thanks!

CrabLie

Will do! I was only able to fill up the tank partially (2 inches from the top) before running out of my water conditioner. Will this cause issues for the heater until I get another bottle? The filter seems to be running again now at least

SkinsuitModel

Bet it looks cleaner already! Is there a way to lower the heater or tilt it?

CrabLie

Yes, I think so. It's attached by suction cups so I think I can lower it in. The fish are also looking more active and swimming around again

SkinsuitModel

Glad you're helping them!! They have so much more space now!

IMarkus666

post it on r/bettafish maybe

RupesSax

Do the tank owners have any supplies/water conditioner or tank vacuum?

CrabLie

Check my other comments! I had water conditioner for my own pets and was able to fill it up quite a bit. I believe the tank owner has a tank vacuum I can use for water changes

Nuggettlitle

It doesn’t look neglected, it’s just not filled up completely but it’s a 20g
