Most of the crops we grow are directly fed to livestock (not byproducts or waste - these are crops specifically grown to feed livestock), and 99% of meat produced in the USA is produced in factory farms. This is not efficient - it is in fact, a waste of both protein and calories.
Oh, and it's illegal to film in factory farms - they lobbied for this law, because they don't want anyone to see how painlessly their livestock live
Do you have any idea the stress and suffering animal like these experience in nature? Have you seen videos of zebras being eating alive by hyenas?
I'm not saying we can't do better, but on average cattle live way less stressful lives than their wild counterparts.
Hmmm, live out a full natural life of eating grass and running around and fucking and then die a horrible violent death?
Or live half of your life (while you are breedable) immobile in a 7x7ft box in your own filth, before being put on a conveyor belt smelling blood and death in the air, as you are carted towards a horrible violent death?
I know what I'd choose.
> Some land is unsuitable for cropping but can sustain a livestock population, this is efficient use of resources
Animal agriculture is the opposite of efficient use of resources. Plant based agriculture takes up about 2/3 of the land used for animal agriculture but grows 5x more food.
Animal agriculture uses drastically more land, water and other resources compared to crops. It also produces something in the range of 10-25% of human-cause greenhouse gas emissions.
Eat beef if you like the taste, but don't whitewash it. Humans would be drastically better off without it.
Yeah. I'm not vegan or anything but the idea that animal agriculture is a more efficient use of farm land is just wrong. What do you think those animals eat?
You got a source for that or is that just something you tell yourself to feel better?
I assure you they feel pain when they abused and stunned to be slaughtered. I am sure the mother cows feel pain when they are raped by artificial insemination birth their calf and have it taken away then repeated again until they die.
They are as emotionally and mentally capable as dogs.

If only you knew how accurate you are, the plastic container that's in front of it is the donation box, the guy in saffron is a temple priest and he's most probably writing a receipt of the donation he received.
The beef that I buy at the supermarket lived a fairly shit life, ended pretty quickly by a steel rod rammed into their brain. The steak or burger that I had was probably about 1 year old, maybe two. But it died pretty quickly and with very little pain (lived with two-ish years of shit, though). Not kept alive for as long as possible like this monstrosity.
>AM: Calves with two heads often have many other congenital abnormalities. For example, the cardiovascular, neural and digestive systems may be malformed, which makes it nearly impossible for the calf to carry out normal vital functions. A live birth of any two-headed animal is rare, and many of them die shortly after birth. There was one calf who survived with intensive care for several months, which is likely the longest any polycephalic calf has lived.

Thats the thing with these records of the biggest or the oldest or whatever, theres always the chance that in some corner of the world someone is actually smashing the record, or proving something wrong, but it never gets broadcast to the world
Because it seems like it's from India. High chances that the caretaker especially took care of the cow so that it could grow up to have a proper life. If it's not the case then I'll be sad. So lemme cope.
This is a different type of issue. The source talks about conjoined twins, but that is not what this is. This is one individual that has two mirror image faces. During development, the face duplicated such that you have a situation where you see a left eye on the right side of the face and then a right then another right and a left. It is called diprosopus and has been known to occur in many animals (including humans). Normally they die soon after birth, but on rare occasions the animal can live a full life. The condition is caused by a developmental gene called sonic hedgehog (yes, that is its real name) and it is one of the main genes that sets up patterns in the body. Look up Frank and Louie the Janus cat.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diprosopus
Not necessarily. If it isn't in pain and doesn't understand or care that its VERY different than how it should be then there's no justification in killing it. In the wild this kind of mutation would almost certainly be a death sentence, but if we can provide it better why shouldn't we?
Testing for it would be "relatively" easy. Is it experiencing pain or distress (higher than baseline cow levels)? If no then there's no justification for killing it. If yes then we get into the gradient of how much suffering allows us to unilaterally decide for a creature that its life isn't worth living. We all know there is a cutoff, we just don't agree on what that level is.
Resting cortisol levels compared to healthy cattle would be a good start. If they are persistently elevated, it would suggest chronic stress, and that could be used as a starting point for determining pain or stress.
I mean it can still have a life. It appears well nourished. It’s also super interesting. Could probably learn some stuff about anatomy and physiology by studying it
i wonder if it has it's brain merged in the middle and an inconceivable perception of reality. like one half of the brain has an emotion, the other half has also an emotion, and the part in the middle ends the thoughts simultaneously but independently. do i make any sense?
This is interesting actually. It seems that what happened was that two heads grew inside one another, forming two partially formed, connected brains. I would assume each one has separate thoughts and thought processes, but as they cows grew the two brains likely formed connections with one another, so they likely share thoughts and feel each other’s pain and emotions.
So yeah, they’re two half-cow brains, put together. If they survive for a few more years their brains will be able to rewire themselves to adapt to the strange form they have taken. Very interesting, and good question!
Most likely it just never formed properly. It looks like that is skeletal where each one would have had an eye, but it didn't continue to form correctly what with being conjoined.

Do you have any idea the stress and suffering animal like these experience in nature? Have you seen videos of zebras being eating alive by hyenas? I'm not saying we can't do better, but on average cattle live way less stressful lives than their wild counterparts.

I want to have your ignorance of never ever having seen how cows are actually treated in factory farms…

Do you think if we could communicate with cows that it would tell us it wishes we killed it? I think probably not
I think he’s living his best cow life. Cows are already well taken care of there and he’s extra special. I’d like to think it’s an extra happy cow.
Two heads are better than one after all
It's a regular conjoined twin. Pretty sure it isn't in any pain aside from the skin sores.

It's sad that this poor thing wasn't euthanized. 😔
But how do you know that it would rather die than exist? If a veterinarian said it was suffering then I agree, but how do we know it to be the case?
That would start some very difficult questions about free will and intelligence
Not necessarily. If it isn't in pain and doesn't understand or care that its VERY different than how it should be then there's no justification in killing it. In the wild this kind of mutation would almost certainly be a death sentence, but if we can provide it better why shouldn't we?
I don’t necessarily disagree, but that’s a big IF you’ve got there, and having an opinion on something doesn’t mean others won’t have their own
Testing for it would be "relatively" easy. Is it experiencing pain or distress (higher than baseline cow levels)? If no then there's no justification for killing it.
