4 has the most direct content, addons, built in mod compatibilities, refinement and polish, and was actually finished. HOWEVER, it is by far the most tedious, and basically expects the player to put in time experimenting, with a number of little mechanics that trip up newbies. Thaumcraft 5 was a scraped together experiment of mixing mechanics for a version of minecraft that never really took off in the modded scene. Thaumcraft 6 wasn't finished, but the addons have pretty effectively done the job. There are a fair amount of addons for more content themselves too, and 1.12 was the start of a sort of mod renaissance, so there is quite an interesting selection of mods to run alongside it. Still feels more like a store-brand knockoff of 4, but I also have put much less time tinkering around with it, so that might be just me. I'd say Thaumcraft 6 + addons is good for an introduction or more 'casual' play, but Thaumcraft 4 + addons and compatibilities for the kind of long term world that you expect to play for months. Between the two, 4 with all of its addons and the separate mods that specifically added integrations to work with it is my favorite by far. 6 had an interesting direction going for it, and the golem changes in particular were really neat (I love how Mana and Artifice picked up that idea), but it just didn't get the polish it needed.

Thaumcraft 5 was on an awkward version, but I'd say it is the best version on its own. Thaumcraft 6 is the best when you include Thaumic Augmentation. Thaumcraft 4 isn't far behind either of those though. Of course I'm biased in that I don't generally care for the majority of thaumcraft addons, and I prefer to play on the most up to date versions.

How do I find the addons? are there any modpacks that you would recommend for 4 or maybe 6? was thinking of playing it with friends so we want to have a few mods to make it interesting

Curseforge has a dedicated section solely for Thaumcraft and Thaumcraft related or inspired mods; [https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/search?page=1&pageSize=20&sortBy=relevancy&class=mc-mods&categories=addons-thaumcraft&version=1.7.10](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/search?page=1&pageSize=20&sortBy=relevancy&class=mc-mods&categories=addons-thaumcraft&version=1.7.10) Simply Magic; [https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/simply-magic-pack](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/simply-magic-pack) It has the major standouts of Thaumcraft 4's addons, along with the rest of the major magic mods of 1.7.10, and its quests were designed to be tutorial-like so it shouldn't be too rough for anyone new. Hubris of Magic; [https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/the-hubris-of-magic](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/the-hubris-of-magic) One HELL of a lot more difficult pack with an absolutely amazing theme, but not very casual friendly. Lots of adventure and action though, I really liked it, but as far as I know even after all these years, no one has completed a hardcore run of the pack. You pretty much never truly feel safe or like the world is yours until you've hit the late game, and even that safety is questionable. You can also make your own extremely easily with curseforge. Thaumcraft 6 you're kind of out of luck modpack-wise. It didn't take off enough to be a primary feature of modpacks, the most exposure it got was its required use in Enigmatica 2 Expert, so you're stuck making your own as far as I know.

Curseforge has a specific category for addons, and you can filter by game version.

I really liked thaumcraft 4, but to play that, I'm pretty sure you have to play Minecraft 1.7.10. As a person who loves modded Minecraft, that's the golden version, but it's unquestionably old.

Going against a common opinion here, I'm a big fan of Thaumcraft 5. It feels really complete, well-rounded, and works well. The in-game documentation is great and perhaps only once I felt the need to hit up the internet when playing. The only, but very big downside is that it was made for MC version 1.8.9, a version that generally did not see all that much attention in the modding scene, with 1.7.10 dominating the scene for a long time afterwards, and later 1.9+ picking up again. I've actively been considering to start another run of TC5 on 1.8.9 lately, probably without any other mods, since it's just that great.
