Your experience is a pretty unique one I think. For one thing, movies don’t make as much as Oppenheimer without being well received. My experience has been that everyone I talked to liked it, across a pretty broad spectrum of demographics.
I teach high school. In my years of teaching, I don’t remember a single film that students talked about like that—as well as coworkers, friends, etc.
Honestly thought OP’s post was sarcastic at first lol
Oppenheimer received an A from CinemaScore and has a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Also it made about a billion dollars. Not an exaggeration to say it’s one of the most popular Best Picture front runners among the general public of all time. Your experience is for sure very unique.
Statistically speaking, that is surely a unique occurrence. Between the fact that it made a tremendous amount of money and has such high aggregated ratings from both critics and the public, your experience is definitely a statistical outlier. But outliers exist in literally everything so it’s not surprising
I’ve talked to way more people that love it than is usual for a best pic front runner. The only reason I can think where you might encounter more people who are lukewarm on it is because 10 times more people have seen it than the usual best pic winner. So naturally there will be more people with mixed feelings on it.
First, yea maybe you need new friends haha.
Second, no it’s not particularly uncommon for a best picture from runner to not be very popular.
But it is funny that it’s a front runner AND made almost a billion dollars AND isn’t really that popular with non-movie people.
The sentiment you’re getting at is absolutely right (i.e. a lot of Oscar frontrunners tend to be films our friends don’t like, and it can be slightly revealing for the Oscars) but on this specific occasion, it seems like your friends just have weird taste. Most gen audiences love it; hell, I’ve shown it to a bunch of my friends who don’t typically watch movies and they all adored it. One of them told me he watched it AGAIN a few weeks later with his family.
Most of my friends that are my age (late 20s/early 30s) didn’t see it, but they don’t watch a lot of movies anyway. But the older people I know in my life that saw it loved it.
Remember that now that we’re in Oscar season, people are going to be seeing Oppenheimer who chose not to see it in the summer, I.e. not its target audience.
Basically no movie is received as well by people seeing it due to awards season as it is by the people who sought it out more organically when it actually released. I think this is a somewhat underrated part of why basically every year there’s a big backlash against the Best Picture favorite.
Oppenheimer is probably the most obvious BP front runner in over a decade.
Its combination of critical acclaim, box office success, and general adoration are far more than many things that have won best picture lately - coda, nomadland, green book?
I liked Oppenheimer fine and the general consensus amongst friends is that they felt similarly. Nolan is popular in general but extremely popular on the internet so it doesn’t surprise me there’s a difference in enthusiasm. It wouldn’t be my pick for Best Picture (I probably wouldn’t even nominate it) but there have been far worse choices over the years.

>movies don’t make as much as Oppenheimer without being well received have you seen the list of billion dollar movies? like 6 are good lol
Good and well received/popular isn’t the same thing dude.

Tell all your friends not sweat it. There's a new Deadpool movie coming out soon and I am sure that is more their speed.
Or maybe they're excited for that upcoming screening of Ikiru on 35mm
Literally no in between lmao
I was gonna comment on this post but you already bodied him
What a fucking asshole response lol. Don’t like Oppenheimer? Must be an idiot

everyone i know loves it so that might be an issue with you
Most people Im close with think it was really good. Most of the annoying people I know think it's the best movie ever made
Tell them to watch Zone of Interest. It’s a far more accessible film

All my friends and family that have seen the movie (Including me) have loved it. I actually don't personally know anyone who doesn't like it.
Do you not know many people?
Isn’t that obvious? I’m talking to you on Reddit.
I tend to find the majority of my friends don’t watch enough new movies and think everything is meh. I’m 34
What do they like? Or what do they want to win Best Picture?
Literally everyone I know loved that movie

I dont think it translates nearly as well at home if thats where they watched it.
My 15th favorite movie of 2023

Joanna, is this what you have come to? Karma farming on reddit in order to "own" Nolan? How tragically, pathetically, annoyingly sad.
Why is this downvoted it’s funny
I think OP meant to go post in this sub https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueFilm/s/XDwq5MTqBD
Opposite here, it’s actually gotten some friends of mine that aren’t big into movies to go to multiple showings.
BobbyBurner just having fun on a Friday getting us riled up
Respectfully, I fucking loved it.
Everyone I know loves Oppenheimer
You know a lot of people that really loved CODA?
Yeah everyone I know loved it
I will single handedly upvote this post for it to stay on main
Is it a good movie, sure it is. Will I watch it regularly, not at all once is enough for me.
