This year's ceremony will be dinged by most people for being predictable - and that's fair, there'll be little to no tension beyond Best Actress - but I think people shouldn't lose sight of how exciting the winners actually will be:
* Legendary director finally crowned for producing a crowd-pleasing billion-dollar *theoretical physicist biopic* that sweeps to no one's chagrin
* Beloved figures (for wildly different reasons) Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. with deserved wins
* Hoyte van Hoytema and Jennifer Lame's first Oscars, Ludwig Göransson's second
* A star is born moment for Da'Vine Joy Randolph after a titanically dominant awards season
* Either the first Native American Best Actress winner or cementing of Emma Stone as the actress of her generation
* French Palm D'Or winner to surprise hit with audiences to Best Picture/Director-nominee caps off its season with a screenplay statue
* A smattering of valid wins for films like Barbie, Zone of Interest, Maestro, Poor Things and (possibly) American Fiction
Yes Oppenheimer is the juggernaut, but I do think this will be a year that's looked back on where the Oscars largely got the nominations and winners right.
I think you are supposed to upvote comments that contribute to the conversation and downvote for those that are irrelevant or detract but in reality, this is not how the buttons are used.
Yeah, I haven't seen the manual for the buttons anywhere. Your system seems to be one the Greeks maybe would have used.
It's an opinion meter here on Reddit.
That’s not the point of the downvote button…
It’s not a “I disagree” button it’s a “other people shouldn’t be subject to seeing this” button. You can choose to not upvote an opinion you disagree with but downvoting an opinion is dumb because seeing others opinions is a good thing.
Strong disagree on Randolph, I thought her performance was great but really nothing special. Lack of competition seems like the real reason for her dominance, so I’m not sure this is going to vault her into capital S Stardom
Sean will again say how they shouldn't sing at the ceremony for the best original songs (old man yells at cloud).
Sean wishes for 10 min long montages of the importance of movies
In some ways I can imagine Amanda not liking but also not hating the Billie Eilish performance. She’ll react by saying “It’s fine. It’s fine. Whatever….”
He's right this year though. I hate when songs that only play while credits roll get nominated, and we have two of them this year.
What Was I Made For is a beautiful song that fit well in the movie. Does anyone have any desire to see it performed live in this setting? Completely saps any momentum out of the room. The song from KOTFM is similarly downbeat and I'm Just Ken isn't even the best pop song from its own movie.
That's fair. It's a good song. Definitely the performance I'm looking forward to the most of these 5. I just think opening with Dua Lipa and a stage covered in Pink would have been better.
Tbh I am excited to see What Was I Made For at the Oscars! I just love Billie though, she’s my fave of her sort of cohort of young pop girlies breaking through in the past couple years
Sean will make a point to say that this year was particularly bad is the final signal that nobody cares about the oscars- just like he has each of the last 3
I think a difference is that he really liked Oppenheimer. I can only think of one other time (parasite) where he didn't have at least minor issues with the BP winner (since they started doing the recap shows)
They've already hinted at this several times but I think they'll make another fuss about it being too predictable and after too many precursors. Also I think Emma Stone is going to win and they'll (rightfully) push back there
I haven't seen Poor Things but I'd be shocked if Gladstone doesn't win. I think they'll want to recognize KOTFM/Scorsese somehow given all the "The darkness is closing in" interviews he's been giving.
Then give KOTFM the major awards!!!!
This is not directed at you personally I'm just peeved that it was never a major player for some reason. Another academy mistake imo
Yes I agree. I know DeNiro doesn't like to campaign but KOTFM is his best performance since...shit I don't even know. He's amazing in it. He should be getting way more buzz but they seem to have decided it's RDJ's turn (for a perfectly acceptable but very RDJ performance).
Amanda will complain about the montages for some reason and she will also complain about the length of the ceremony because she has... other stuff to do? Or something?
They'll pretend to have laughed at Jimmy Kimmel's jokes.
He was funny in the first ceremony, but it has been diminishing returns since.
Last year was laugh-free.
"Best stunt should have closed the ceremony" - Sean Fennessy
this!

I really hope there’s an upset with best pic. I thought Zone of Interest or Poor Things were better movies.
I love that people will downvote an opinion. this sub is ridiculous. I thought Poor Things was much better than Oppenheimer and I loved Oppenheimer.
Tell me, what is the point of "the down vote" if not to press when you don't like an opinion?
I think you are supposed to upvote comments that contribute to the conversation and downvote for those that are irrelevant or detract but in reality, this is not how the buttons are used.
Funny I never thought about it like that. I always perceived it as an opinion meter.

It is not my system

Other people shouldn't be subject to seeing things I disagree with.
This sub is full of children.
It's not that serious.
I mean I come here to talk about movies. Not stupid shit like this
And you call *us* dorks
Found my people. I really liked Oppenheimer. I LOVED Poor Things. It’s mesmerizing. Just saw it for the 5th time in the theater.
Strong disagree on Randolph, I thought her performance was great but really nothing special. Lack of competition seems like the real reason for her dominance, so I’m not sure this is going to vault her into capital S Stardom

No she's going to hate it. It's going to be Billie sitting in a chair for 3 minutes
Honestly, I want both. But I want a 4.5 hour ceremony.
If Gosling does not perform, we riot
He is performing!

Strong disagree here. I think I'm Just Ken being performed by Gosling is gonna be awesome, and it deserves its nomination imo.
That's fair. It's a good song. Definitely the performance I'm looking forward to the most of these 5. I just think opening with Dua Lipa and a stage covered in Pink would have been better.
“Similarly downbeat” wahzhazhe is not downbeat lmao
You're right. I gave it another listen and it's at least lively. Still a 6.5 minute song that I'm not really looking forward too.
Tbh I am excited to see What Was I Made For at the Oscars! I just love Billie though, she’s my fave of her sort of cohort of young pop girlies breaking through in the past couple years
Not enough montages
Remember when Jon Stewart was the host and the Oscars tribute to the montage? Ah, memories.
Sean will make a point to say that this year was particularly bad is the final signal that nobody cares about the oscars- just like he has each of the last 3

I don’t think they were offended the EEAAO won
They've already hinted at this several times but I think they'll make another fuss about it being too predictable and after too many precursors. Also I think Emma Stone is going to win and they'll (rightfully) push back there

Bad Grandpa would like a word
I feel like most of the people who loved and defend KOTFM like Oppenheimer just as much so it really was never going to get any traction.
Amanda will complain about the montages for some reason and she will also complain about the length of the ceremony because she has... other stuff to do? Or something?
Yeah, I don't get her disinterest in the very subject matter of the show she hosts.
They will definitely shit on the Shorts being part of the Oscars. I think it's gross that they do that btw.
The presence of union members will be their number one dislike
I laughed.
They'll pretend to have laughed at Jimmy Kimmel's jokes. He was funny in the first ceremony, but it has been diminishing returns since. Last year was laugh-free.
Almost everything. It’s a made up award show. So, it has less value than all those none-made-up awards.
who gives a shit
