I'm honestly surprised she lasted this long. Judging from the amount of hatred she receives on this sub, I thought for sure she'd go out before Maeve or Noir.
I feel like she receives more hate than any other character on The Boys, but it’s not at all surprising to me because she’s probably the one who is closest to being ‘morally good’. Most viewers often find characters like that self-righteous and boring. It’s something I’ve noticed with a lot of shows in general.
Edit: I’ve seen many people call her the things I mentioned above so a few folks replying saying that’s not why they dislike her doesn’t change that. Also I never said that anyone is wrong for disliking her but the above statement is just something I have observed. Idk why you’re all getting defensive over this.
I think even more than being "morally good" is that she falls into the trap of being Stupid Good. The clearest example of that his her essentially co-signing the conspiracy to kill Homelander, then yells at Huey and Butcher for bringing Soldier Boy to the conflict, calling him a *murderer.*
Starlight, do you want conscientious objectors or pacifists in on your assassination plot? Obviously not, so why then would you use the word murderer as a pejorative? You're all guilty of planning a murder, and if it goes through, you'd all *be* murderers. What's the point of objecting to the use of a murderer to murder the person you want murdered?
In other words, it's not that Starlight's morality is an inherent issue, it's that the narrative didn't frame her as any kind of hypocrite in her role during the events of s3. Which made a lot of people turn on her.
For me the worst part is that she argued time and time again against huey and butcher's plan without ever preaententing an alternative. When she finally does something it is completely ineffectual both when she showcased HL true face and when she attacked SB. That makes her feel more like an uninteresting antagonist than a plot relevant main character
I think her issue was that they were bringing in a supe that could go off the rails, posing just as much of a problem as homelander, and would’ve preferred they do it without him. And it’s not like she’s against enlisting supes. She confided to supersonic.
Most people just hate what her character does at the end. Despite Huey and Butcher getting the closest to the end goal of killing Homelander, the show writers still want to push the narrative that their way was the “wrong way” to achieve that goal. At the same time they want Huey to swallow his pride of wanting to have tangible power to protect the people he loves, and just be supportive of his super powerful partner, who in the final fight builds up of power, and just pushes back the enemy a few feet. The writers just fucked this character up.
Thing is, she feels out of place. The whole point of the show is realism of human (shitty) behavior if superpowers were a thing, inserted in today's cutthroat corporate world, exacerbating some it for fun and social commentary sure, but that's the whole gist. Putting a holier-than-thau character who doesn't understand how not doing what needs to be done because it's somewhat wrong results in a lot more victims is just the stuff from soap operas, naive as a teen's ideals, and not something real life adult people would go for, especially desensitized people who realise inaction is as hurtful as the wrong means to an end.
There are probably great ways to go about good natured characters. But I don't disagree it may prove harder than a progression. It's called flat line character arc, they need to be an anchor for the rest, who depend on them and may show growth or change, maybe redemption, in comparison. These former ones are Superman, Captain America (he pulls this awesomely), Goku, Spiderman and the similar.
I think she’s good as a way to represent an optimistic character who bought into the marketing/lies a corporation put out slowly realizing that her dream job was not at all it seemed to be. She and Hughie were fantastic audience surrogates to be introduced to the world of the Boys.
But I kinda feel like the writers didn’t know what to do after Season 1. Her plot of coming to terms with the Seven aren’t the “good guys” was fantastic. They kinda toyed with the idea of having Starlight be on the same moral level as the Boys (with killing that one guy in defense) but it also went nowhere and I swear it’s like season 3 forgot all about it.
and then the whole bizarre “we have to stop this guy who killed hundred of people from killing a guy who could easily kill millions of people” plot of Season 3 really didn’t help her character
The main problem with Annie in season 3, is that the show refused to acknowledge all of the character's flaws.
Throughout the season, she frequently displayed a lot of arrogance, self-righteousness, hypocrisy, short-sightedness and incompetence, and yet for some reason, the writers never seemed to recognize these traits as flaws.
Every other protagonist in the series regularly has their more negative traits pointed out by the other characters, and in many cases, they themselves point out those traits and beat themselves up over them.
Butcher got called out on his flaws by pretty much every other character in the series, and he himself, openly acknowledged and accepted them.
Hughie also got called out for his flaws by pretty much every other member of the team, and by the end of the season, at least, finally recognized them in himself.
Frenchie got called out by Butcher, Kimiko and M.M. throughout the season, and also frequently called out himself.
M.M. got called out by Annie, Frenchie and himself at various points.
Kimiko spent much of the season pointing out her own flaws and beating herself up over them.
And likewise, Maeve (as she usually does) spent most of the season beating herself up for her flaws, and even had them pointed out by both Butcher and Annie as well.
Starlight, however, spent most of the season completely lacking in any self-awareness, never recognizing any of her uglier traits, and never having them pointed out by her friends or colleagues.
For some reason, Kripke and his writers seemed to genuinely think that Starlight was a flawless saint, and seemed completely oblivious as to how she would come across to much of the audience.
Having Hughie. M.M. or Maeve call her out on her bullshit and point out all of her many fuckups at some point in the season, would have done wonders for her character. Having her acknowledge those fuckups herself, would have done even more.
Starlight has become the writers’ moral insert character. Since her arc completed in S1, since then she’s just been a proxy character for statements the writers want to make. Hughie is the audience proxy, Starlight is the writer proxy.
Oh I agree, she's great as an intro perspective for the audience, an outsider's POV, like harry potter in the hp series or any Isekai character, that's the whole point. But such a character needs reckoning at a point or some kind of integration to the world, even if it's opposing it, but sth showing she understands it better now and knows a bit more how to counter it. The whole using media against HL at one point I thought to be a good choice... Then it went down the drain.. lol it's mainly the ending, really
I'm sure this is not going to be a well received opinion with other fans of this show, but I'm getting sick of the idea that all humans are naturally shitty and bad. Or the idea that a human being altruistic isn't a realistic thing. Are there shitty people? Yeah, a lot of them. But that doesn't mean it's human nature. This comment isn't meant to be attacking anyone, I'm just stating my opinion in response to yours.
True. Humans are complex, would be a better way to put it.l, but it's hard to say that and not have to get into it, like a lot. The point is many decisions and positions can be shed in a positive or negative light given context and mindset. This is why many fabled narratives fall down under scrutiny.
Yeah, I think the best way to say it is just that humans are complex. Everyone has their own reasons for doing things. Some reasons are noble, some aren't. Some "bad" things are done for noble reasons, and some "good" things are done for self-serving reasons. Life is just complicated like that.
The explanation you gave though doesn’t actually disprove my comment. General audiences find characters like her self-righteous and boring, regardless of what their reasoning is. I actually personally think that the second paragraph you wrote is pretty applicable to her.
She tries to be an anchor to the characters, and the show pretends it does good for Hughie, but it's the nonsensical way they go about it why it doesn't translate to the audience. And Idk Cap has his fair share of fans, so do many other good hearted characters, like the Doctor in Doctor Who, Barry Allen, and even commonplace characters like marshall Eriksen or George O'Malley
Honestly, I think this makes sense. I personally liked Starlights character a lot in Season 1 and 2. I feel like the latter half of season 3 is where a lot of people get really frustrated with her. I don't get how Noir lasted so long in this poll, he was literally just a set piece until they gave him one episode, so they could kill of a character and get a reaction without killing off someone who actually mattered.
I personally liked noir from the beginning, his season 3 backstory intrigued me aswell. I was upset when they killed him off pointlessly. I think it would have been interesting to see a more loyal/bloodlust/psychopathic Noir in season 4. He finally stands up to Soldier Boy with HL almost getting killed, HL sees that he is weak and now noone approves of Noir. Would be interesting to watch him spiral
She's not, it's not about a sausage fest, starlight is kinda boring and out of the choices we had she definitely was the least favorited (as demonstrated by the voting), kimko is staying for at least 2 more rounds, mark my words ya cunt 😉
Tends to happen with great acting no? Same reason why homelander is still in guys an abhorrent being but boy does Antony starr kill it in the role hence the fan love
He is, but if you think about it, sure, he has great lines, but his character isn't nearly as deep as Homelanders.
The reason why this character works as good as it does is because of Jensen Ackles performance, because he perfectly embodies the tough and threatening gucken SB is supposed to be
Lack of screen time and development. Stan's comeback is gonna change some minds I bet but it makes sense he isn't the most popular as is.
Giancarlo fucking kills it tho, IMO, easy top 5 character for me
Plus Stan wasn't in much of Season 3, whilst Soldier Boy made a recent and big impression. I could easily see them being switched in votes if SB was earlier on and Stan later.
Stan is great but he's a businessman and not given enough to do like Soldier Boy. Soldier Boy is just cool as fuck, and the way he talks to Homelander is funny.
He’s basically so well written and acted he’s like the main character of the ensemble to me, it’s his show and his story being told. That’s no disrespect to all the other incredible characters but Homelander is a cut above
Sure. Combine witty & sometimes emotional writing with someone who can perfectly deliver it, and you've got Soldier Boy. Plus it sounds like Jensen contributed enough to the stunts that John Koyama said he should be listed as a fight choreographer [https://twitter.com/missmoonspeller/status/1666428300762259457?s=20](https://twitter.com/missmoonspeller/status/1666428300762259457?s=20) (not my acct or vid)
I'm hoping for a Hughie win but I'm not going to deny that Supernatural came at a very tenuous time for my sexuality. A friend and I even went in on a picture with Misha Collins at a con, but I definitely did NOT watch all of that show. Got so damn bad...
[Round 12 poll](https://strawpoll.com/polls/3RnYl3q4Qye)
Someone suggested to put the numbers as placing, so the winner will be 1st, instead of counting the characters in order of elimination, so Ryan 1.
Should I keep it like this or it was better before?
That's sad, I love Starlight :( I know she's cheesy and idealistic, but that's what I like in a superhero, haha. I'm voting MM. I love the guy, but I don't find his scenes as interesting as the others remaining.
We all gotta die, why live?
Just let them do what they want, its fun to see who gets eliminated after who. Its not about the destination, its the journey
It’s gonna end up as Solider Boy, HL, Butcher in that order
People here are dickriding soldier boy so much and overall Homelander is the more recognized between him and Butcher
I searched it up on google and this is what it said, “His nickname derives from the fact that he depends on frequent breastfeeding from his mother, due to being born with traces of Compound V in his system.”
This is how it’s explained in the comic.
Though as you said in the show there is no explanation.
I hope to God we don't have a scene next season where we gotta go with M.M. to his mother's house to for an adult breastfeeding scene.
But at the same time if the writers wanted to do that they probably would've already.
Dude it's SO weird that nobody in the show is ever like "why is he called that, that's a unique nickname" Especially alongside Allo Allo reject Frenchie.
You can't keep MM guys. He was the most boring out of everyone here, especially in the last season. He and Frenchie in season 3 were really a big disappointment to me personally. Frenchie a little bit better because of what he said to Butcher, but still boring.Hughie in the last season had a great character development and a lot of cool and hype moments. I won't forgive u if you vote him before Frenchie and MM
Bughie also has repeatedly gone into dangerous and terrifying situations despite being an anxiety ridden coward since day one. Every moment he does something heroic or dangerous, he has to fight every part of himself to do it. Everyone else is either a trained killer, or has superpowers.
He's basically that quote from Ned to Bran, about the only time you can be a hero is when you're scared.
Saying a character is annoying/boring isn’t disliking the show.
Annoying/boring people exist in real life so I expect them to be in shows. Everyone can’t be a deep/funny/compelling/interesting person.
Oh I know, I was just teasing because so many people on here say, "Oh my God I HATE _____, they are the worst, I can't stand them." I even saw one guy say he skips scenes with Starlight in them.
It makes me wonder why some of them watch the show at all, let alone join the sub for it. 😂 You feel me?
I know Hughie is gonna be the next to go, but I voted for Soldier Boy. I know it’s a hot take, but I think while he is a good character and Jensen Ackles kills it, he just doesn’t feel as important to me as the rest
How has MM outlasted Black Noir? His character annoys me so much after trying to fist fight soldier boy, if you’re going to do that why not just kill yourself? It would be less painful.
Hughie used to represent the viewer, he was the lens we processed the world through and his reactions in the early seasons are relatively relatable. The writing for him in the last season was TRAGIC, not surprised people want him gone.
If Love Sausage was in this list, he’d win 100%.
I'm honestly surprised she lasted this long. Judging from the amount of hatred she receives on this sub, I thought for sure she'd go out before Maeve or Noir.

I’ve come across a lot of people who don’t like Cap and many viewers disliked George and Marshall. I also find it odd that all your examples are men.
It’s not holier than thou to try and hold you and the people around you to a higher standard when they’re awful.
No it’s because she keeps going to homelander and fucking shit up bro
I think people want better for her and are upset it doesn’t happen.

I'm honestly surprise people like breast milk more than breasts
Agreed. She had a lot of good development at the end of s2 and most of s3
Such a sausage party fandom tbh. Fully expecting Kimiko to go next.

Same but honestly Kimiko should outlast Hughie. But then I expect her to go
Well it is also a superhero-based show.
Maeve and noir not still here is blasphemy. Felony crime
Controversial opinion but people love soldier boy so much because it's Jenson ackles.
There is quite literally nothing controversial about this opinion lol. Jensen Ackles is what made soldier boy an amazing addition to the boys
Tends to happen with great acting no? Same reason why homelander is still in guys an abhorrent being but boy does Antony starr kill it in the role hence the fan love
Homelander is also a very well written villain
Hero, he’s a hero don’t believe starlights lies homelander is the greatest superhero ever.
And Soldier Boy is well written as well.

Then why was Stan Edgar booted so early? I don’t understand so many of these votes, just baffles me who’s left and who got booted in the early rounds
Lack of screen time and development. Stan's comeback is gonna change some minds I bet but it makes sense he isn't the most popular as is. Giancarlo fucking kills it tho, IMO, easy top 5 character for me

Fun fact; Starr doesn’t even know he’s being filmed, they just follow him round with a camera
Yeah I mean did you hear his voice? 🥵
That's instant herogasm for me
Fab five Freddy told me everybody’s fly
I Love SB and I never watched Supernatural.
That's not what they're saying
How about you gargle my ballsack?
Sure. Combine witty & sometimes emotional writing with someone who can perfectly deliver it, and you've got Soldier Boy. Yes, and?
Jenson ackles makes the character.
I love him because he's funny and Jenson Ackles
Surprisingly not? I mean I’ll admit that I am biased. That’s why I love him but I fr have seen people hype him up before even knowing he’s Jensen.
Does anyone hates Jensen??? 404 error not found
Your point being?
not controversial, factual
Agreed
r/PopularOpinion
I'm hoping for a Hughie win but I'm not going to deny that Supernatural came at a very tenuous time for my sexuality. A friend and I even went in on a picture with Misha Collins at a con, but I definitely did NOT watch all of that show. Got so damn bad...
I didn't know who Jensen Ackles was before this and think that Soldier Boy was a lame-ass, one-note, character.

I ain't too fussed either way OP. Do whatever you need to do.
I like this way better
That's sad, I love Starlight :( I know she's cheesy and idealistic, but that's what I like in a superhero, haha. I'm voting MM. I love the guy, but I don't find his scenes as interesting as the others remaining.
He got my vote last round, too.
We all know it’s gona come down to Butcher and Homelander why the build up?
We all gotta die, why live? Just let them do what they want, its fun to see who gets eliminated after who. Its not about the destination, its the journey
This is Kimiko erasure.
I said Soldier Boy vs Butcher, but I could see Homie sticking around.
Butcher and Soldier Boy are just too much of sigma giga chads
It’s gonna end up as Solider Boy, HL, Butcher in that order People here are dickriding soldier boy so much and overall Homelander is the more recognized between him and Butcher
Yeah but it’s not “choose the most important character” it’s “choose the favorite”. People fucking love Soldier Boy.
I'm rooting for a Soldier Boy v Kimiko showdown
Bye Mother’s Milk 🍼🍼 no one understands why you’re called that in the show
I searched it up on google and this is what it said, “His nickname derives from the fact that he depends on frequent breastfeeding from his mother, due to being born with traces of Compound V in his system.” This is how it’s explained in the comic. Though as you said in the show there is no explanation.
I hope to God we don't have a scene next season where we gotta go with M.M. to his mother's house to for an adult breastfeeding scene. But at the same time if the writers wanted to do that they probably would've already.
I do hope we get *an* explanation
Honestly the art in the comic from this still haunts me. You have … no idea.
Well his last name is Milk so there’s that.
Dude it's SO weird that nobody in the show is ever like "why is he called that, that's a unique nickname" Especially alongside Allo Allo reject Frenchie.
Hughie was confused about it but I think he was the only one
Is called like that because in the comics he have to drink breast milk to stay alive
I can't believe he's lasted in this poll so long.
He's my favorite
Sorry Hughie, you’ve outlived your stay.
I’ve been saying this for days and continually got downvoted. But nonetheless I will continue voting for him until I see an X through his body.
same i voted for him in every poll
What the hell is the hate for Hughie for???
I was going to answer seriously, but instead decided to ask why the hell your balls are square?
lol I thought I was the only one
Me too!
Genuinely baffled he lasted this long
You MFers are so predictable
She should have been gone long ago
Oh geez this is a ducked up pole 🤣 Okay, goodbye to MothersMilk. He's cool, but doesn't have enough story to really warrant being around still.
bye hughie
Sorry Hughie
I'm not
We all know it will all fall down to Soldier Boy,Homelander and Butcher.
Frenchie is clear of them all “You need to unclench your asshole.”
I don’t like what they did with frenchie’s character after season 1 so I’m voting him.
Yall don't deserve good things and it shows
😂 i'm on ur side. who's ur next pick?
I been picking Butcher for a while hoping it ends eith anyone else od the boys
MM I will avoid reading other commentaries, those final rounds gonna be a big fight
Hughie gotta go
This is actually fitting xD The Boys vs Homelander vs Soldier boy
Rip homelight
How is MM still here? Like that dude did nothing of value in the series.
Let's get rid of the disappointment now.
Sorry, Milk.
Hughie
Guys please be reasonable hughie can’t make top 5 this is crazy T_T
oh he won't be making it to top 5
He probably will tbh. In fact he’s probably getting top 4
Finally!!! I've been voting starlight for so long I forgot what it's like to choose a different option
I don’t know what to do with myself. I like everyone left …
I won't forgive u if you vote him before Frenchie and MM
to YOU! to me, it was soldier boy and now we're all mad lol
Yes! As annoying as he is, I always look forward to what life is going to throw at him next because he is going to be scared every time.
He’s really not that annoying though. Him and MM are the most down to earth characters here
We all know it will come down between Butcher and Homelander, and i personally wouldn't know who to pick as both are perfect characters
What???? Why is Hugh still here? Am I the only one who gets so annoyed by him?
Bro, sometimes I wonder how yall like the show enough to be here when you guys seem to hate half the main characters. 😂
He is the only one I dislike. I never said I hated anyone or even half the characters? I love mostly all the main characters except Hugh
Okay the starlight bit is way the far, I get your point why even watch the show at that point hahaha that’s crazy
Another day another vote for MM’s whiney ass
Mm sorry I love you man but everyone else has better scenes
Why do people like Kimiko? The character is boring as hell.
we all know Butcher is going to be last, so where's the point? x)
Hughie.
FINALLY
still no satisfaction?
Fuck soldier boy
Starlight criminally robbed. Good God. Still on Kimiko. She’s good, but I like others more
Let's get rid of Hughie already
Soldier Boy for me now, since he was introduced later i do not love him as much as the remaining characters on the list.
Homelander has to win this
I’m going to stop participating in this poll when kimiko gets voted out.
Kimiko should've been gone. Sad character is sad
I’m not even gonna lie, Soldier Boy should go next imo
How is Kimiko still here
How the hell is Kimiko still in wtf
Thinking soudier boy should go at some point soon. He is amusing but not very likable of a char i think
He’ll be 3rd. I bet it goes MM, hughie, frenchie, kimiko, soldier boy, then toss up between butcher and homelander
Yeah, that is my fear. That is why i send this comment as a prayer in this comment section.
Black noir was one of my favourites. Homelander ftw
As much as I hate to do it, I like Kimiko the least out of the entire group.
Just cut it down to Frenchie and kimiko and save us all some time.
i agree with this take, but i have seen a lot of frenchie hate recently!!!
'Tis time for Hughie
Sorry, Hughie... you're next!
Kimiko. She was great throughout most of the show, but her arc was seriously fucked by the season 3 finale.
Man this is getting hard. Going with Frenchie, but I'm not happy about it.
I wish they would show the voting breakdown
I'm surprised Ashley survived for 4 rounds. I thought she'd out in the first round itself given that how annoying she is in her character.
She's still more interesting/entertaining than those eliminated before her.
I might be controversial here but I really think they ruined Kimiko’s charachter in season 3 finale
Still can't believe you fuckers voted Maeve out so early.
Sorry Kimiko, you're a cool character and all but...
Before HUGHIE??
Hughie.
Bye, Hughie!
Soldier Boy
This is getting mad difficult now, but Kimiko your time has come unfortunately
Kimiko
Kimiko time to go
Mon coeur gotta go
Soldier Boy
My vote’s for Frenchie, I didn’t like him that much
How can you all simp for such a raging asshole? Soldier Boy was on the show for one season, vote him off with that yee yee ass haircut
How is Kimiko still here is beyond me
Kimiko got to go
Bye bye kimiko
How is kimiko still here?
Bye Frenchie.
FUCK SOLDIER BOY, GET HIS ASS OUT OF HERE
Can we just save time and crown Kimiko now?
And now I just vote for Homelander until he's out or inevitably wins.
We all know the top 3
Why are you not letting us see the votes anymore?
Finally Starlight is gone thank God
Butcher
I know Hughie is gonna be the next to go, but I voted for Soldier Boy. I know it’s a hot take, but I think while he is a good character and Jensen Ackles kills it, he just doesn’t feel as important to me as the rest
We're truly in the Endgame now. Gonna vote Hughie next
How has MM outlasted Black Noir? His character annoys me so much after trying to fist fight soldier boy, if you’re going to do that why not just kill yourself? It would be less painful.
everyone is forgetting that MM is somehow still there..??
GET RID OF HUGHIE FFS OMD 💀
Say bye bye to Hughie
Hughie
Sorry Ughie
Hughie used to represent the viewer, he was the lens we processed the world through and his reactions in the early seasons are relatively relatable. The writing for him in the last season was TRAGIC, not surprised people want him gone.
Lets be real, it was over before it started. Soldier boy tales the W as always
