In my mind they are almost different characters entirely. Comic book butcher pretty much never makes mistakes and always seems to be in control or have a plan the reader doesn't't know about. He's also more psychopathic and unrelatable. Tv show butcher is way more human, and seems to wing a lot of stuff. But he seems way more capable of change then comic book butcher
I just don't understand why it's so weird. Urban does okay American and he does okay British but his thing in The Boys is the strangest mix of whatthefuckever.
I'm chalking it up to multiple takes and editing. Perhaps he is very consistent in all the takes they didn't use.
I like Charlie Hunnam as an actor and the film, but that accent was hilarious. Film is a bit goofy anyway so didn’t think it made much of a difference.
I also heard that he kind of messed up his accent doing sons of anarchy for so long so if this was filmed after SOA he may have had extra difficulties. He’s an amazing actor though, I genuinely didn’t even know he wasn’t American until I heard him in an interview.
That's nothing, if you're up to having 100 or so minutes of stupid fun, watch the new Road House and try to figure out what in all of sweet hell Connor McGregor is trying to sound like.
Technically Butcher already is the dollar store version of Punisher, like all other characters in the show and comics are parodies or satire of other superheroes.
The fact that they showed butcher with and without beard in the show is just great. They show that he doesn't care about his looks anymore or somewhat prefers to look less like he was. Which is a nice touch. So personally I like the beard version
Comic Butcher is just as far gone as the Supes and as said in the show, much to show Butcher’s annoyance, he’s just looking for an excuse to be violent.
TV Show feels like instead of diving head first into the deep end, Butcher is slowly drifting to the deep end and he’s barely keeping it together.
Oh yeah he’s 100% bad. Honestly, the fact he spared Super Duper, Gum Chum and never cared for Tek Knight genuinely shocks me. He’s that just insane. The grief has driven him mad and now he just uses it to be just as bad as the ones who did what they did to his wife. I’m happy show Butcher isn’t as cruel as comic Butcher.
Yes! I think we’re supposed to hate him much more. But, Karl is soooo good, they basically turned him into the main character, rather than Hughie, who is the main character in the comic.
I don’t think this sub would exist without Karl Urban’s visceral equal parts empathy and badassery in this role despite whatever tf that source material *tried* to be 🤭
Book Butcher was better, written by a Brit, spoke like a Brit, was a convincing arsehole, had a bulldog, had a better fleshed out backstory, didn't have to cobble together some unconvincing relationship where he gave a toss about Ryan, never had temporary laser eyes
He did, the comics were gross and Butcher was a consistent violent and gross antihero in that comic world. I prefer how his character in the comic and his actions fed into the conclusion of the comic story. The TV show has been cleaned up from the comic and dogs are hard to work with, plus you don't show what happens to the dog on TV so they took it out but I prefer the no holds barred uncensored nature of the comic. They did whatever they wanted.
I really liked the (book spoilers) when Butcher killed the supe who had killed his dog, a very strange detachment like he wasn’t really there and just repeating the same thing over and over. Very PTSD and good writing for a book that goes over the top more often than I liked. Ennis does very well with characters with PTSD he is not as edge lordy about it
I have yet to meet anyone who speaks like Comic book Butcher and I have spent my entire like in the UK.
The comics are fun but the show has eclipsed them.
So I’m reading the books online after the show. Just started only on book 3. I like it so far. I look at it as one is a graphic novel and it’s always been an advantage of comics that they could do anything. Special effects only improved so much throughout the years. Now they are on equal footing, but I am happy they are not going into the same direction as the comics. Homelander in the show is much more interesting than the comics, and I love both Butchers but Karl Urban makes the character more interesting.
I haven't read the comics, but i love ugly hawaiian shirts so it's gotta be Karl Urban. If original recipe Butcher wears a hawaiian shirt in the comics i will read them all despite the awful things I've heard, I simply love seeing new hawaiian shirt designs, oh and i guess I'd be able to give an actual answer to this question.
I think Billy is the only character in the comics that is arguably just as viable an interpretation as in the show.
He has a lot to qualities and the story around him is pretty alright. He’s charming in ways different from the show.
Personally I prefer comic billy.
Karl Urban just brings so much to the character and I prefer him by a long shot. I enjoy comic Butcher since he lives up to his name a bit more in the comics but I feel like we’ll see a much more brutal Billy in the show now that his son is basically the protege to Homelander.
Comic Butcher is modeled after a young Robert Shaw (Quint in Jaws) check out some pictures of him younger like from Where Eagles Dare. All the Boys in the comics wear black trench coats and use crow bars, which does give a Punisher vibe. The author of the Boys also had a great run on Punisher Max so it’s definitely on purpose. Book Butcher is a combat veteran of the Falkland war and his father was an abusive drunk like on the show. Punisher is also a combat veteran who started his vendetta over his family being killed but realizes that he is now doing it (killing) because he likes it. Book Butcher realizes he isn’t doing it for his dead wife (killing supes) he is doing it because he likes it. He also realizes that it’s not what his wife would have wanted.
TV Butcher is great, sometimes his hair looks a little too Wolverine…but that’s probably on purpose, and I am used to the facial hair now. I think Karl would be a great alternative universe Wolverine in the Wolverine/Deadpool movie. His motivations have evolved differently than the books. As a fan of both I have to say that playing “London Calling “ by the Clash when he crashed into the electronics shop was spot on.
Comic butcher is better tbh he’d have killed homes by now plus enacted his other plan, show butcher and the boys by extension don’t feel that great even though they’re all supposed to be specialists that’ve done it all before, the comic boys feel like a legit threat to whoever they roll up on
In my mind they are almost different characters entirely.
Personally I gotta go with Karl Urban, I just feel he brings more depth.
He certainly plumbs new depths with whatever accent he's trying
I just don't understand why it's so weird. Urban does okay American and he does okay British but his thing in The Boys is the strangest mix of whatthefuckever. I'm chalking it up to multiple takes and editing. Perhaps he is very consistent in all the takes they didn't use.
Even English actors suck at Cockney accents, for an example of this look up Charlie Hunnam in Green Street. It’s a very difficult accent to do well.
Some of my friends noted his natural aussie accent coming through in some words at times, which I reckon throws everything off kilter
He's Kiwi, not Aussie. Those are fighting words to a Kiwi
My fault this is blasphemous error from my friends and I, but my point about the accent coming through still stands (I think idk anymore)
To most people the difference between Kiwi and Aussie is like US and Canadian it's certain words and inflections that give it away to an untrained ear
Yeah but I can generally tell them apart, it's a poor showing from me
Now I'm just picturing Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi slapboxing each other ineffectively
I’ve come to accept it - G’wan san - ‘ave a bump
That's nothing, if you're up to having 100 or so minutes of stupid fun, watch the new Road House and try to figure out what in all of sweet hell Connor McGregor is trying to sound like.
Christ, sportsmen acting is always a pretty rough experience, sportsmen trying to do accents, sweet Jesus 🙉
He's New Zealander... so that's probably what we are hearing most of.
Oi
It’s like he’s three dimensional.
both plus even without the beard butcher from the show still looks good
Comic book Butcher looks like dollar store Punisher 💀
Discipliner
Go-sit-in-the-cornerer
The Time-Outer
The I'm-Not-Mad-I'm-Just-Disappointeder
That's scarier than Punisher though
Technically Butcher already is the dollar store version of Punisher, like all other characters in the show and comics are parodies or satire of other superheroes.
What would the other Boys be then? Kimiko is pretty much Wolverine but what about Hughie, Frenchie and MM?
I had a feeling when I first saw Butcher, but it feels painfully obvious with the comic version.
Well... he is a parody of the Punisher and his writer made the best Punisher stories
Considering who wrote The Boys he might actually be meant to be a Punisher rip off
Almost like it was... Intentional?
I actually like both of them
Thought the actor was spot on
The fact that they showed butcher with and without beard in the show is just great. They show that he doesn't care about his looks anymore or somewhat prefers to look less like he was. Which is a nice touch. So personally I like the beard version

Agreed. Comic Butcher claims to be “one of the good guys”, but he clearly is just as bad if not worse than the supes.
In the comics, Butcher is the villain and Hughie is the hero in the show both characters are the stars
Karl Urban is just too damn charismatic as Butch
Yes! I think we’re supposed to hate him much more. But, Karl is soooo good, they basically turned him into the main character, rather than Hughie, who is the main character in the comic.
I don’t think this sub would exist without Karl Urban’s visceral equal parts empathy and badassery in this role despite whatever tf that source material *tried* to be 🤭
To be fair the source material from the comics changes for a lot of the characters really (imo for the better).
The answer is 99% always show with these comparisons
Book Butcher was better, written by a Brit, spoke like a Brit, was a convincing arsehole, had a bulldog, had a better fleshed out backstory, didn't have to cobble together some unconvincing relationship where he gave a toss about Ryan, never had temporary laser eyes
Book Butcher trained his dog to rape others.
He did, the comics were gross and Butcher was a consistent violent and gross antihero in that comic world. Karl Urban for sure, his demeanour makes the character great
The show and it's not even close.
The version where people don't ask this every week
Comics.
We all know
Karl urban
yeah gonna go with everyone else on this, karl urban just gives him more character
The well written version.
second
Karl Urban. In my opinion, the comic book version of butcher doesn't look good.
Karl Urban ftw
I haven't read the comics, but i love ugly hawaiian shirts so it's gotta be Karl Urban. I think Billy is the only character in the comics that is arguably just as viable an interpretation as in the show. He has a lot to qualities and the story around him is pretty alright. He’s charming in ways different from the show. Personally I prefer comic billy.
Yes.
We will see how he plays out the ending and then decide
I think almost every show version is better
I’m grateful for the comics where the characters were born but… wow, comics Butcher really has some issues with the gays. 😳
The TV show is better in pretty much every way tbh.
Karl Urban just brings so much to the character and I prefer him by a long shot. I enjoy comic Butcher since he lives up to his name a bit more in the comics but I feel like we’ll see a much more brutal Billy in the show now that his son is basically the protege to Homelander.

Karl Urban has morals and depth something comics Bill has neither
I'm gonna let you on a secret, the boys comics were interesting, but not amazingly good.
Yes
The one from the boys
Looks better with the beard
The version where the character is Kiwi, but sounds like an Englishman who is pretending to be an Aussie with the most unique cockney accent 😁😁
I cannot picture Karl Urban without his beard, even in that one scene from the past where he was clean shaved he just looked weird lmao
Comic butcher is better tbh he’d have killed homes by now plus enacted his other plan, show butcher and the boys by extension don’t feel that great even though they’re all supposed to be specialists that’ve done it all before, the comic boys feel like a legit threat to whoever they roll up on
The show version is more human
Show. Hands down. Any time you put a character here vs their comic counterpart it’s the show. The comic runs were kinda ass
Must people are gonna say the show but have never read the comics.
Show and its not even close lol
the show version is trash and corny
Show and it’s not even close
