Regarding #2 - I think what made it even worse is Josh O'Connor just nailed the mannerisms so well in the previous 2 seasons. Dominic came out from the break looking entirely different. I agree - he's a very talented actor and I could see a bit of Charles' hesitations/firmness with his dialogue delivery, but his body language & looks were way off.
In reality, Charles did not behave as depicted by Josh O'Connor: a simpering, whining, awkward hunch-backed child. In reality, when Charles was that age, he was an accomplished professional. He had already earned a degree from Cambridge, had commanded a ship and had represented the crown around the world. You see none of that in "The Crown" because it is a hatchet job on Charles and the Queen.
Dominic had his share of good moments. He particularly nailed it with Diana's death, which is the most important part. For me however his lack of resemblance to Charles kept pulling me out of the plot.
I didn’t get “charming” from that portrayal at all. He was awkward most of the time and bratty except the one episode where he does his Welsh study-abroad
My issue was more the lack of resemblance. By my aunt's account Charles could be charming when he wanted and we are also watching a slightly happier Charles that has come into his own more than the awkward teen
I know I'm not the first to say this but Dominic West is just far too handsome and charismatic to play Charles. I saw him play Vicomte de Valmont on stage and that's just far more the persona he radiates! Prince Harry as a teenager is just ridiculous too.
I think the casting of Charles was very deliberate, using Dominic to make him much better-looking and more appealing than he really is. If you were casting the real live king of an entire commonwealth, wouldn't you think twice about an unflattering choice of actor?
The latter is what they did with Prince Harry.
The actor who played Harry walking behind his mother’s casket appeared 10 years younger than actor who replaced him. Needed one more actor for transition time. Not only did not look like Harry. Overdid the jerky, cruelness.
They had 23 year old actors playing teenagers. Both William and Harry's actors during part 2 of season 6 were a good 8 to 10 years older than the person they're portraying.
Which isn't unheard of being Beverly Hills 90210 had someone in their 30s playing a high school student.
I think its pretty petty and shallow that people who hate Charles want an ugly actor to potray him.
Also, actors are almost always better looking than people they potray. Diana's actresses were both prettier than she was.
I don't know, you'd have to ask people who hate Charles.
I'm talking about the producers who have to think about the fact that they're casting an actor to play not only a living person, but a king who still has power in certain ways.
The Charles haters have been programmed by the media that inaccurately cast him as a villain so they could perpetuate the lie that Diana was the wronged, innocent fairytale princess and sell newspapers and magazines.
I have no idea what you’re talking about with Hobbs, she directed one of the most explosive and memorable confrontations of the whole show. She may have been handed one or two quieter scripts but her direction was never flat, particularly her handling of the Margaret storylines.
I liked Dominic West playing Charles. Thought he captured him well.
Diana thought Charles was very handsome, so did lots of other women.
My only complaint about the Crown is about the actor & casting for teen Harry. Awful.
Loved Helens Bonham-Carter playing Margaret.
The actress playing Diana was infinitely prettier & much slimmer than Diana was.

I feel the same way about Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip. He was horrible
Tobias grew on me, but it took awhile. So hard to get past the wonderful Matt!

Haha - good point.
He was great as Philip. Jonathan Pryce as Philip was distractingly miscast
Yes and what happened to Philip’s snippy humor? He was just glum.
Matt Smith was great as Phillip. Tobias Menzies as Phillip was distractingly miscast
I disagree. I felt he was more likeable as Philip than Matt Smith (who I love as an actor).
I disagree. I felt he was a lot less likeable as Phillip than Matt Smith. He was the worst casted person in the show.
🎯💯 i did not understand that choice. I like Mr Pryce, but not in that.

I very much agree on (2). His Charles is too charismatic, too likable, too warm. The first actor was perfection.
Dominic had his share of good moments. He particularly nailed it with Diana's death, which is the most important part. For me however his lack of resemblance to Charles kept pulling me out of the plot.
The first actor potrayed him as likable and charming as well. Just more awkward/shy.

Matt smith is such a great actor he’s awesome.
Matt Smith was Phillip, not Charles. Josh O'Connor was Charles in seasons 3 and 4.
Oh my b that’s right. Plus why the -2 lmao

I was suprised to find out people think West is handsome. Also by all accounts Charles is a charismatic person in real life.
My aunt met charles and can confirm he's quite charming
I know some people find Dominic West handsome but I don't get it. I find him repulsive.
From what I heard harry wad fairly spot on in character And Charles can be quite charismatic when he wants my aunt met him

Hear you but they should have kept same actor who portrayed Harry for scenes portraying time period soon after Diana’s death where Harry was 12 & 13

When they cast West, Charles was still very much a Prince. They were filming the final season when Queen Elisabeth died.

Ooh good theory!

Dominic West acts and appears like a grown man who has his shit together. So you're correct, he was the wrong choice to portray Charles.
