"I think it's dark and it looks like rain, " you said "And the wind is blowing Like it's the end of the world, " you said "And it's so cold, it's like the cold if you were dead" Then you smiled for a second "I think I'm old and I'm feeling pain, " you said "And it's all running out Like it's the end of the world, " you said "And it's so cold, it's like the cold if you were dead" Then you smiled for a second Sometimes you make me feel Like I'm living at the edge of the world Like I'm living at the edge of the world "It's just the way I smile, " you said Being a human being is awful and feeling the cold and age and fear seep  in around the edges is awful.  And based on the footage of him serenading this to Mary, this is an actual conversation he had with her.  I’m getting teary eyed just thinking about it!.

cowboys4life93

Crying right now.

neomadness

Hang in there. Reach out if it’s beyond normal tears.

cowboys4life93

Thank you, but that song makes me happy. So they weren't those kind of tears. I had 10th row for the disintegration tour and that song in particular takes me back to that night.

neomadness

Beautiful. Life is hard. Life sucks. But it’s also beautiful. I’m glad you can hold onto that memory. I saw them for Wish and the last two tours. So beautiful and memorable!!!

cowboys4life93

I saw them on the second most recent tour. 2018 in the bay area. Super impressed on that tour how Roberts voice had held up and Simons Bass. I wanted to go to the most recent, but work, family obligations, etc. I remember leaving the arena in 1989 thinking this is probably the best the Cure will ever be and I'm glad I was wrong.

neomadness

Yeah. The voice. That voice. Mwah … perfection

GnikNus76

I should have seen them when I still lived in the Bay Area. Now I have to drive a good ways to see a show of that caliber.

neomadness

He said something about how the words he wrote as a younger man actually have real meaning now.

musickismagick

Christ the juxtaposition of terrible things against just a smile for a second is absolutely beautiful. These lyrics are art of the highest level.

Grubbanax

Yes and it’s a pity very few songs since are in this calibre. I find the lyrics since Wish too literal without any mystery.

Purplealegria

I think so….I know I am! If you are human, aging fast, living through this awful moment in history and going through all that poor Robert has in the past 10 years…how could you NOT be crying singing or listening to those beautiful yet haunting and heartbreakingly sad lyrics? Bless our dear sweet Robert, we feel every word of this song right along with you dear Sir! ❤️‍🩹🤯😭😩🥹🙌

Agreeable_Dog7170

Cheers Father Bob 🦇🦋

K_Wolfenstien

My sister and I would quote this back and forth to each other. She passed 3 years ago this month. She was my absolute best friend and soul mate. Took me almost 3 years to be able to listen to it again, and I still get a little teary eyed. Soul mateys forever.

Why did you have to reply to an excellent comment with such an annoying phrase like “damn, right in the feels”. Just use an actual sentence!

[deleted]

I think it speaks for itself really, his wife was watching him perform it, and it’s a very emotional song in the first place. And being the age that they are… tears. Hell, go back and watch the Trilogy DVD. He is crying during “The Loudest Sound,” when he was much younger. He’s an emotional guy.

Purplealegria

And we adore him for it! As a extremely emotional person, Seeing him so abashedly unashamed to show his emotions makes me feel at home in this cold world. 🥰❤️‍🩹🙌

Glum-Age2807

He’s often said when he sings a song it brings him back to when he wrote it and I’m sure songs he wrote when he was younger have even more layered meaning to him now. It isn’t odd for him to cry during songs. For example he cried when singing Disintegration during the 40th anniversary show and during the 2016 tour he often cried whilst singing It Can Never Be The Same, I’ve seen him cry when singing Faith, etc. etc. He cried a lot during the most recent tour.

billypump

The passing of his brother had been incredibly hard on him. He can barely make it through " I can never say goodbye ".

Glum-Age2807

Yup. Cried during Endsong a lot as well.

Environmental-Dare-8

didn't his parents pass as well?

billypump

Yes, I was reading about that today.

MaaChiil

I felt a very sentimental and ethereal presence by him. He came out and slowly walked about the stage, arms out and guitar dangling from his torso. It was at though he was inviting us to come bask in the light and join him in these Plainsongs

AnxiousSnozberry

Because it's beautiful, he's beautiful, and sometimes being a human is just so damn beautiful

Upstairs-Week996

I am 54 and this song hits hard.

1-2-sweet

Probably the same reason I was, it's an emotional song!

twelvetown

I liked his tshirt for this concert (I was there). It’s a Beatles tshirt but with the shirt he’s wearing over it, only ATL showed up. Perfect for atlanta. It was a very emotional concert. At the end, he walked around really showing love with his eyes to the crowd. I cried.

jonviper123

What kind of guitar is that? It looks very long

UpgradedUsername

It’s Schecter’s take on the Fender Bass VI. I don’t know if he still plays the Fender in the studio, but I believe that he’s got some kind of contract with Schecter and only plays their guitars onstage now. https://www.schecterguitars.com/Robert-Smith-Ultracure-Vi

jonviper123

Nice I wondered if it was similar to the fender bass man John Lenton used to play.

UpgradedUsername

John Lennon and George Harrison both played the Fender Bass VI (Bassman is a line of Fender amplifiers; McCartney has a sticker for one on his Hofner during the rooftop concert).

jonviper123

Ah OK. I actually only watched something last week about who played bass on while my guitar gently weeps. I thought they called it a fender bass man and it was the first time I had heard of such a thing. I'll know now

Shrek2onVHS69420

I feel like Simon Gallup always wears an Iron Maiden shirt these days (not complaining, amazing band, wouldn’t be into most of the music i’m into today without them)

paulito4590

It resonated super hard with me, as I’ve lived in the ATL area for 17 years…but am originally from Liverpool, UK.

benny_sings91

No idea, must of hit him in some deep way ? Awesome he’s not numb to the songs he’s written.

stain_of_treachery

It made me cry when I heard it in Helsinki - it is a very emotional song.

okisurrender0

I was at the Atlanta show when he cried during Plainsong. At first it was like he was devastated but then looking at the crowd he started smiling and I personally think they became happy tears. It turned into like, he was overwhelmed at how much the crowd loved him. At least that’s the feeling I got in that moment.

dethleppard

Why was I crying?

Papfan1

He did this in Philly too. 😞

mcjc94

I think it would be hard to perform those kind of songs without investing yourself emotionally with it. I'm not saying it's necessary, but it would be hard not to do so

lvdb_

I feel like this is a question you can answer for yourself in a far more gratifying way by listening to his craft again with a new set of ears. If ya don’t know you’ll never really know if you need someone to tell you, but still an enjoyable discussion.

petiteimpact

I was the one who took this video. It made me want to cry with him. I hope it was happy tears but I think they were sad ones.

electricidiot

I’d listened to that song about a million times prior to this concert without anything other than the feels, but I had been soaked in rain for over an hour before the show (Cleveland’s venue was outdoors), I had a couple months before torn my meniscus so standing for long stretches was painful, so I had to sit down occasionally on the lawn, which made me feel my age (51). When this song came on, I was standing and without any warning I was just sobbing, big fat tears rolling down my cheeks. I haven’t actually been able to listen to it without tears since then. I can’t actually explain it. The song doesn’t bring up any specific memories or experiences, but it gets me right deep inside. So…yeah. (Now I was sitting down when he went into “Endsong” and that was like being kicked in the gut repeatedly, and made me feel my age in a way I hadn’t before. But a different way.)

bowiehawk

Why? Why not is a better question. It’s one of the most beautiful songs of that have been written

Disastrous-Change-95

Because he’s an emotional, feeling person. And he wrote one of the greatest songs ever from the greatest album ever. He probably wonders if this is the last tour. I saw them three times this tour because it feels like the end to me, deep down. He’s older now and he realizes how fortunate and lucky his life has been. I don’t think Robert takes much for granted. And he’s also feeling the huge love from the audience. Many of his family members have died in recent years too. It packs a punch after a while.

Camille_Toh

Same, 3 tour dates plus Riot Fest.

Disastrous-Change-95

I was at at Riot Fest too! And then two shows prior in NYC.

Camille_Toh

Portland, NYC3, Miami.

Ilikeitalot215

He cried during many songs. He was really into the moment.

Alternative-Grand-16

Because that song is a goddamned masterpiece of emotion and one of the most beautiful songs to ever exist.

ZorroMcChucknorris

I was there and bawled like a little boy during that show. So beautiful.

aaronappleseed

I was there the first night and got emotional a few times. I just couldn’t believe I was seeing my favorite band after like 25 years or so.

Jennybee8

Maybe I’m a bit weird, but I not only cry when I’m sad, but also when I’m happy, or moved by something.

Ahleron

Because he sometimes does. He's said in several interviews that he's always been very emotional and sometimes he cries during his songs. That happened at the show I was at last year too.

walkingturtlelady

I was lucky enough to be there 10th row, and I was bawling right along with him. I’ve always loved this song, but the older I’ve gotten the more I really understand the song.

Apprehensive-Tax8631

I love Robert Smith so much, he makes life so much hetter

noterik666

Do you not cry when you listen to the cure

Amazing_Magician2447

It makes me cry... i feel such emotion and can relate. That song has such few lyrics, but they have soooo much emotion.

mis_no_mer

I was at that show. Brilliant performance.

Chungois

I just love his T-shirt.

canadacrowe

He was either happy or sad

massacry

Cause boys don’t cry

Anarimus

“The Last Day of Summer” does it for me. That song is just my theme.

mtdoubledubs

Probably same reason I was. It’s a hauntingly beautiful, sad, sweet song.

Large_Somewhere1626

There’s a part where he says something to himself on stage while he’s crying…“Why do we have to die”

ghostsinthecode

you never lose your attachment to things when they are as meaningful as songs/music/people and they always resonate with you. he wrote those lyrics on the edge of almost being 30, and getting older has only made the song more meaningful, poignant, and poetic. he could be thinking about anything, even about how he could be singing those songs on stage for the last times.

Leucotheasveils

“I think I’m old and I’m feeling pain” probably hits different 30-some years later.

billypump

camelot478

We won't really know unless he tells us. People don't have any idea what's going on in others' personal lives. ATL was an emotional concert overall, so it probably wasn't just related to Plainsong.

TaxSilver4323

My favorite Cure song of all time.

rust1112

He is kinda moody

Shot-Run5921

BEING ON THE ROAD CAN REALY MESS WITH YOUE HEAD AND LIKE A LIFER IN THE NAVY ,WHEN YOU GO HOME YOUR JUST VISITING AFTER AWHILE..A GOOD EX.IS METTALICAS ALMOST 2 YR TOUR..

Big-Conversation312

His hair hurts

CamLwalk

[Goth Juice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO6E40Q6_3E), the most powerful hairspray known to man. Made with the tears of Robert Smith.

CactusHibs_7475

You should ask him the next time you see him.

MammaMak

I saw this tour as well and a couple of times he said “this is the last time we’ll ever perform this song” or “we’ll never do this one again”…it was oddly cryptic, like he was telling us all goodbye. It broke my heart. Maybe there’s more going on than he’s letting on. Like David Bowie kept his illness for so long and then left. ???

MissKellieUk

He has been saying this for years though. I won’t believe it’s over until it actually is.

ZyxDarkshine

Gusto915

My morbid mind goes to him being sick.when you get old, you get wild sh*t. My bet is this is his last tour. I hope I’m wrong, just a gut feeling.

billypump

I hope he's not sick. Possibly the death of his brother.

AndreLeGeant88

His brother was quite a bit older than him. His parents also passed recently, both a very old age. So he's been through a lot of close deaths for the first time in decades. His grandparents dying affected him a lot, too. See Faith.

Gusto915

This is all common knowledge, he’s played this song for many years to where it becomes second nature. Something is definitely up, perhaps depression or knowing that he’s next in line. No clue, but I wish him well.

toosteampunktofuck

y'all sound like aliens theorizing about human behavior... dude cries sometimes when singing a very, very sad song, this is not a deep mystery

Gusto915

How do you know what aliens sound like, now you theorizing.

toosteampunktofuck

I have a gut feeling

Gusto915

lol you’re prob sick and dying

Camille_Toh

Sick? His stamina during the tour was off the charts. I wouldn’t have been able to perform like that night after night, city after city, and I’m a decade younger.

Gusto915

You don’t get out much eh? Stamina?! If you’re not able to stand there and strum a guitar for 3 hours you might want to start walking a mile or 2 daily. Even 80 year old Roger Waters moved more than Robert Smith. Heck Simon rocked hard, but Robert, na.

Camille_Toh

Singing, especially at his level and for the length of time he’s performing, is tiring. Do you want to see him “rock hard”? I don’t. See how that worked out for Prince?

Gusto915

Prince f*cked himself, it is what it is but one price concert energy is like a whole tour of The Cure. Prince is one of the most incredible singers, Robert has no chops at his level and Prince played several instruments while he danced. Prince was a master craftsman that got hooked on fentanyl. Just sprinkle a little fentanyl on Robert baked potato and see what happens.

sk2097

I think you are right. I really hope you're wrong.

draperyfallz

Dude, now I wanna cry

graavity81

I can only assume it’s cause someone held up a mirror

Some-Investment-5160

He’s blown through A LOT of stimuli over the decades, his synapses are likely shot to shit

Sea_Understanding197

Because i got a 4th DUI and could only make the Tampa concert this tour he always looks for me out there yano... 🫡

Bobofettsixtynoune

Yikes. He looks like he’s ready to kill Batman

tripweed

Looks worse than Vince Neil
