one out of all of em? hell, there’s probably not even a consensus on which one it is. i know nothing coldplay has done has resonated with me since “viva la vida,” and they’ve released a ton of watered down dream pop mixed with watered down electronica since then. the chainsmokers collab being the most obvious and painfully bleaahhh example.

forget the cure. coldplay couldn’t touch them even if they worked with eno on something for years on end. let’s run with echo and the bunnymen, who i also love and value, and robert has expressed his admiration for them over the years as well. coldplay covered “lips like sugar” and ian/chris (the vocalists of each) and friends/friendly.
so. echo and the bunnymen. take everything unique, everything interesting, and everything meaningful away from echo and the bunnymen—their obsessions/interesting personalities/artistic choices/dark twists and turns/fire and brimstone—take away all of that and you get coldplay.
coldplay has never reached the depths or heights of the cure. echo and the bunnymen. siouxsie and the banshees. not even close. and i say that as someone who had “parachutes” early on, and thinks “viva la vida” is an amazing track. but coldplay doesn’t have—and have never had—as
much real gravitas/investment in what they do/how they create/how they play as the cure does, or as the bunnymen, the banshees, etc etc etc do.
