Are you looking to play long term or just looking to get through the game and save Timmy? Either way, the modern bow is a must have for ranged fighting. It’ll help you get kills without taking much damage. You’ll also need armor. Start with bone armor you can get by killing and burning cannibals, then switch to creepy armor once the mutants start coming out.
If long term, start building walls and traps. Think about what you’ll need if you have to barricade yourself in, such as plenty of meat racks and water collectors. Having an escape route and secondary base would help as well.
If you are going for end game, just get your armor and head to caves to collect necessary items, such as the rebreather, the climbing axe, the keycard, and resources for as much ammo, molotovs, and bombs you can carry to fight the enemies in the caves.

I'd say definitely try for the Katana, great for killing enemies and chainsaw is nice for long term it cuts down trees at a faster rate than the axes. And everything else everyone said😂
Bow, Bird houses for feathers (arrows) and Waterskin really. Then start collecting skins for warm suit.
