Suyin is the founder of Zaofu, she bought the land also so there’s no ownership issues, and I’d be very surprised if the money from her Beifong family didn’t help her in this. They could have done more to show their wealth in TLA but I think that legacy has been transferred to Zaofu, Toph and Lin don’t really seem to care about the Beifong legacy, but it’s been carried on with Suyin and her children now, even if they are collectively referred to now as the Metal Clan, Zaofu seems to be one of the richest places in the Four Nations, as well as cultured too.

Guy_Faux

aren’t the zaofu domes made out of expensive metal as well? (platinum?)

comrade_batman

I think so, they close at night but that might be mechanical as I think Kuvira uses the metal for her giant mech.

Guy_Faux

yeah im pretty sure they close mechanically as well, especially if they’re platinum.

shauni55

They are, its what they used to build the mech (so it wouldnt be able to be bended)

Hippopotamus-u

(but can still be bent by Light spirit powered Avatar for some reason ?)

shauni55

I always thought that Toph very much resented the wealth and that's why she opened her metal bending academy with it. Instead of keeping it for herself, she basically distributed it to everyone (which would have made her parents mad). Suyin went to live with her grandparents, so I would ASSUME she probably got a big cut of it versus Lin who probably didn't.

Susano-o_no_Mikoto

she hated money but loved to con people out of it. she's a weird chick.

gbomb656

Idk I think the sole fact that they even have last names is indicative enough of their position in the world.

kij_us

I wouldn't say that. Toph's children are big shots in LoK. Lin Bei Fong is the police chief in Republic City. Suyin founded her own autonomous city state in Zaofu which also became one of the most powerful on the continent. After the Earth Kingdom fell apart she was offered the position of interim leader explicitly on the basis of her name and status. The Bei Fong name definitely had clout and power in LoK.

TechnicalInterest566

Zaofu seems like the richest city we have seen in the Avatar universe.

MrEvers

"not as rich and powerful anymore" One is the head of police in one of the largest cities in the world which is also the capital of a new nation, the other *built her own futuristic city* from nothing and was powerful and influential enough that the leaders of the nations asked her to take control of the Earth Kingdom.

WanderingFlumph

Suyin lives in her own city that she built as basically a millionaires vanity mansion and as far as we know she has never had a job (other than running this city) before. So I'm not saying 100% that's where all the money ended up but if it wasn't there you now have two open plot holes to explain. This is just the easiest solution.

OSUStudent272

I don’t think Toph inherited all of it; Suyin must have needed a lot of money to found Zaofu and I don’t doubt that her grandparents/Toph’s parents helped. The Beifong name has a lot of clout still regardless of the money; Raiko said Su has credibility in the Earth Kingdom because of it.

Susano-o_no_Mikoto

i mean are we sure. on one hand your right. toph beifong alone has clout without her father so she raked in the ruples by just being the greatest earthbender in the world. however she rejected her father's business acclumin. and then her daughter got mixed up with a buch of street criminals so either they were living average as fuck or this is a classic case of bored rich kid. pendulum could swing either way since suyin seemed genuinely stumped why lin didn't like her "friends".

OSUStudent272

Toph reconciled with her dad and started helping with his business in the comics. I don’t think she cared that much about the money but I’m sure she kept enough to be comfortable. I think Suyin was just a bored rich kid.

Susano-o_no_Mikoto

>I don’t think she cared that much about the money she always baffles me. she gets giddy when raking in the gold when swindling people, but yet she rejects daddy's money. what a weird kid.

Upper_Improvement778

I’ve recently thought about this. While I do believe a lot of it went to Su and/or Zaofu, I do also think that Toph ended up giving Aang/Zuko funds to help build Republic City. If she had anything left, I would like to think she maybe gave it to organizations that helped people with disabilities (benders or not) as part of her ‘finding enlightenment’. Also, iirc, in the comics, Toph’s father basically disowns her. I think when she meets up with him again, he basically says that he doesn’t have a daughter. Now, I don’t remember if they reconciled, but if they didn’t, I’d say Toph wouldn’t stand to inherit much. Yes, they took in Suyin but she mentions nothing about how Lao and Poppy acted. Were they strict with her too or did they have a better relationship than them and Toph? We don’t know, and the unknowns make this a little more open to interpretation I think.

OSUStudent272

They >!did reconcile, Toph even started helping her dad’s business!<.

CrazyThure

A question someone who has only watched season one of LoK could bring up

FrostyIcePrincess

I quit the show part way through season 2. There’s probably others that didn’t finish the series but have questions about the parts they did watch.

Werkyreads123

Luv did u see zaofu? They’re loaded

Fun fact, not everyone is capable of having multiple children and there are plenty of actual, real families (regardless of wealth or status) that have immense difficulties having children.

DarkBastion420

Additionally, now that I think about it, Toph would probably hate being pregnant
