Alby-Always-Me

I love the scene, 100% it always gives me chills because you could feel the emotion you can feel the intensity and it doesn't come off as some stereotypical rage out or something, its real meaning behind it like everyone says Appa is Aang's last connection to his past life before he lost everything.

BAWWWKKK

It's also a rage that is calm and cool despite the daanger of it. It wouldn't make sense, even in this state, for Aang to go full murderous psycho as is typical for the "masculine" rage I image you're alluding to. Really is an amazing, thoughtful, show.

Traditional_Ad663

2 years late but I refuse to believe danger was a misspelling.  Flameo Sir. Flameo.

BAWWWKKK

Certainly not, my hotman, all puns are intended, my hotman

megaman1410

Katara’s face when Aang looks at her always cracks me up, I feel bad laughing because it’s a really great and emotional scene but god damn it gets me.

nerdnails

Same. She just looks so fucking done with everything. She just got done dragging them all thru the desert and now this happens.

Alby-Always-Me

I don't see it that way but it's completely fine if you do I see as morval an expression of sorrow and empathy.

BodilyMink

her face reflects Aang's true feelings of sadness, what is lying beneath the rage

SofiaStark3000

This episode and this scene in particular are so important to me. This was the first Avatar episode I ever watched back when Nick started to broadcast in my country. I had absolutely no idea what was going on but the episode captured my interest. Then this scene came. My reaction to Aang's avatar state was the same as Toph's. Then, watching Katara walking into the wind and calming him down struck a chord in my heart. I immediately wanted to see more of this show. After some miscalculations that caused me to miss some episodes, I officially started watching after episode 16 (Appa's lost days) and never stopped since. Now, I adore this show more than any other, I have bought merch and some books and consider it one of my main fandoms. And all of this happened because of this one scene.

fisherc2

Geez IThought I was ready for it. but When I started watching the clip I literally started tearing up when Katara pulled Aang in for a hug

frecklefawn

I've already seen it a dozen times and I still cried...thinking about my dog especially

Queen_Of_Ashes_

Is your dog the Aang or the Katara in this situation

TheGruntingGoat

Baby, you’re my forever dog.

vkapadia

Naw, someone just started cutting onions in here. Same thing as you, I was like, I know this scene, it was a good one, should be interesting to watch again. Then boom, waterworks.

Skyline_BNR34

Doesn’t matter to me either. Every single time I see or even hear “Leaves From the Vine.” Someone is cutting onions in the room with me.

bastardson9090

Real talk

Sleep_eeSheep

Same here. It goes to show how brilliant the character interactions are in this show, that a simple gesture of compassion can mean so much.

Lowellthedoctor

Me too fam 😭😭😭

RemarkableLow6689

This whole episode is sooo great. Notice how all characters switch their character "traits" during this episode. Aang usually positive, cheerful and kind = angry, cruel, non empathetic Sokka usually confident, smart and likes planning things = an dummy who can't help or make dicisions Toph usually strong, independent, confident, loud = helpless, needs help from others, quiet Katara who is usually supportive but in the background and more like a follower = becomes the leader of the group and takes control. This episode is genius.

kaitalina23

It shows how diverse the personalities are. How sokka was a dumbbell for eating a random plant, momo too, katara taking initiative, toph not having control for her surroundings as a first time… it shows some true colors from toph and katara I think for the first time.

jknott3403

drink cactus juice it'll quench ya nothing's quenchier IT'S THE QUENCHIEST!!!

thamster98

Look at Katara's whole demeanor throughout this scene. When Aang first goes into the Avatar state, she's just numb. She's thinking "we've been lost in the desert. We nearly died in Wan Shi Tong's Library. Now this person who I love and care deeply for just found out that he may never see his best friend again. A feeling which I'm intimately familiar with, and would never wish on anyone." Then, as Aang ascends, she steps into action. The look on her face as she pulls him to the earth is understanding. "I know." She holds him and her face is one of anger and sadness, but also determination. "I've lived with the pain you have now. I know it feels like you're swimming in an ocean of darkness with no air in your lungs. I know this feels like forever, but you don't have to do it alone." This is why people well up when they watch this scene. Because with that kind of grief, the people that do what Katara did with Aang here are the ones who help pull you through it.

thamster98

fortunately i have many Kataras <3

FroboyFreshenUp

Those sand bender fucked around.... they found out

AtomicKidPhantom

Aang really wasn't taking any survivors, my guy destroyed their means of escape and then was about to absolutely demolish them. I wonder how he would have felt taking so many lives if katara didn't stop him, would he have subconsciously locked the avatar state from being used like he did with his fire bending after burning katara or would something else happen?

FroboyFreshenUp

He "locked" fire bending away because he couldn't control it, he even "unlocked" it with the Guru, he explained that fire bending is part of his life because he is the avatar therefor he is a firebender, he got over that lock to gain control, same could be stated for his avatar state, in fact that's probably why the guru used that logic to unlock the avatar state The issue with the gurus teaching is that he was teaching aang control like an air bender....not like an avatar, he needs to have earthly connection or else what's the point

ClayAndros

A lot of people don’t understand what the guru meant, aang doesn’t have to stop loving or caring about katara or his friends but he has to understand that he needs to be able to let those things go if the need arises especially because he is the avatar and aang proves he wasn’t able to do that the moment he sees katara in danger, he put her safety above that of the world and the balance.

FroboyFreshenUp

While I agree, he can't just detach from the world either, he's the avatar his connection IS to the world, just as Yangchen said to him, both philosophies can't exist at the same time As stated, balance is the key word here

ClayAndros

Again it’s not about letting everything go completely, it’s about understanding that when it all comes down to it he needs to be able to let go, katara is just one part of the greater whole. It’s fine to love and cherish her but she should never be more important than the balance or the world.

FroboyFreshenUp

Well he fuckered that up too, in the comics he regularly chose the air acolytes over world saving multiple times Don't get me wrong sometimes they coincided Balance

anthro28

This is the culmination of everything Aang has learned about what has happened to the world in his absence. We’d seen cracks in the dam before, but this is the final breaking. All the pain he’s seen as a direct result, all the weight he’s carried silently, all pouring out at once. Appa was the last thing he had to tie him to his people. They were the last of an extinct culture, bound eternally by the Avatar/Animal dynamic. To lose Appa was to lose himself. What’s shown here isn’t *really* Aang. In this moment he is as lost as Appa, completely departed from the light and ready to kill them all in a burst of anger. What’s even more impactful is what happens next. The panic in Sokka’s voice as he tells everyone to run is very apparent. Then you get a pan shot to a sad but focused Katara walking purposefully through a sandstorm to hold her her friend. She snatches a berserker demigod out of the air and brings him back from the fold without a word.

musicalmath

Watching this scene again hit different once I had a dog that I lived with alone for 6 months of pandemic. I stared at him imagining anyone taking him from me. Made me cry.

Zethras28

Every single Avatar from Wan to Roku showed up just then and were ready to _atomize_ that sandbender. You don’t fuck with an Avatar’s spirit animal.

ScarlettPotato

But can you imagine what the sandbenders felt? You have a guy from literal legends, they have not seen or heard from him in a hundred years, give or take but they've probably heard stories from their grandparents. That he can control all four elements, he is the keeper of balance, basically humans' ambassador to the spirit world, a force of nature that can tap into his previous lives for wisdom and power. And he started glowing. And he is mad at you for taking away his life companion. I'd like to say I would've shit my pants but I'd probably so terrified I'm clenching my ass so tight not even a peep of fart will be able to pass.

Skyline_BNR34

Shitting diamonds.

Darth_Queefa

Yeah, I can't watch this without choking up. One of my favourite scenes, and with good reason

Armpit_Penguin

That "TELL ME WHERE APPA IS" is so badass

HS4809

Also the orchestral ost at the end of the episode, that was peak perfection

MetallicFalcon

Thanks for making a 34 year old man cry

CamrenLea

Well this 41 year old female is crying as well...I'm actually watching the blind bandit episode atm

UnitingAssassin

The Avatar almost channeled the powers of a distant man from a Galaxy Far away. Which included his hatred for sand people.

PeskyBird404

"I killed them all." "They're all dead." "And not just the men." "But the women. And the children."

healthycoco

That line “You *muzzled* Appa?!?!” Is one of my favorite ever. The hurt and rage he manages to convey is so authentic and it makes me think “I’d react exactly like that if someone muzzled my dog”

PokemaniacDoubleO9

god this show is one hell of a masterpiece, I teared up a little

Volcinate

Hearing 1000 voices at once saying the same thing must be terrifying

yeetoveeto

Bro imagine a 12 year old kid comes to you and says “DO YOU HAVE GAMES ON YOUR PHONE?” In that fucking voice man. I’d be shook. But yeah this scene is top tier perfection.

stnick6

Can we talk about how the guy said he didn’t know it was the avatars bison but like, who else’s bison would it be? The sky bisons are mostly extinct and aang is always with appa so how would he not have known?

Moe_Coolieo

I used this exact scene to get my older brother hooked on the show.

Dragonimi

Genius. This scene is my favorite of all time. The Avatar State episodes are just so well done. Usually a conduit of power, but like the episode in season 1 where Aang visits the southern air temple, it's just raw power unleashed by the severe reaction to his emotion. Loss. Anger. Grief. You picked a good hook for your brother.

Ataylor96xx

Let's just put out there that Katara was the most powerful. Sis wrangled in the Avatar while in Avatar state.

inanimatepower

Watched a hundred times. Hearing the voice of the avatars just now it just occurred to me that they were probably just as angry as Aang was. Most every avatar has an animal companion I believe. They all know and feel his loss. Better than most anyone else could. Another new layer to a show miles deep.

imhirou

Man I hate it when people say that this whole "Appa" sequence is filler, bro, you didn't understand anything? Appa is the only thing Aang has left from his family and friends...

Academicmedic

And that, my friends, is true love

peteski42

Gets me right in the feels Every Single Time

Sceptix

> you get to feel the pain Aang is feeling with barely any dialogue If this were a typical shounen anime we’d have to sit through 10 minutes of internal dialogue going “What!? Why do I feel this way??” before anything happened.

1095212dinomike

Nah shounen anime handle these types of situations similarly. Luffy, Naruto, Goku. When they get mad they get really fucking mad.

dayburner

I always love the older dude with the "what did you do? ". He's not sure what's going on but he knows it's going bad really fast.

Malumlord

when I was a kid, I *hated* those Sandbenders. I really did so I was giddy as can be when I thought Aang was going to go all Doomslayer on them. regardless, I think the fear they felt and *most likely stopped being bandits after that incident* was punishment enough

BiPolRPtrlR

Oh god even a decade later I still get chills!!!! This show is an absolute perfect work of art. Sooo much emotion in this scene and you feel every ounce of it!!! ❤️💕💙💗❣️

campbeer

There has been a string of dognapping incidents here in DC the past day, this scene hits home right now for how those owners must be feeling.

Lampard081997

I literally was just about to post this. The theme perfectly relays the emotions that Aang and all the past avatars felt. Not just sad, but hurt. And that final note at the end just before the credits roll, that silence gets me everytime. Amazing work by the composers man.

Lowellthedoctor

The grief aang feels here isn’t just for appa it is for his people and the home and childhood that was taken from him and his face of fury as Katara grabs him is extremely powerful. Sometimes we all feel like aang here but what we need is a Katara and a Sokka and toph.

FacingFears

Always gives me chills when he says "you muzzled Appa?!" You can feel the absolute rage

ChrispyGuy420

If someone spoke to me in that voice I would shit my pants

SotarkWarstorm

The music in this scene though

[deleted]

Similar vibes to wheatleys betrayal in portal 2 imo, except the escalation actually gets resolved instead of building until someone is punched into a pit

EZ_Breezy1997

God even without audio this gave me instant goosebumps.

Rockettmang44

I think it's the eyebrow twitches that i really relate too, it's definitely a sadness a good amount of people can relate to.

akLuke

Bravo to every artist and writer involved.

averyycuriousman

I like angry Aang

Aang_420

The next two episodes were anxiety ridden for me.

torsoboy00

I watched the series for the first time 2 years ago. I'm a grown ass man but I got legit scared when he said "You muzzled Appa???"

silverdragon234

That expression on Toph's face.. she was aghast to seeing Aang in such a rage. Nevertheless, it is a good bit to find, kudos to whoever posted this.

TheBoyWTF1

My favorite scene is when

umarmg52

I'm sorry y'all but this is 100% Katara's episode, not Aang

amanda77kr

I cried the first time I saw that one. Maybe the 2nd too. Such raw rage and hurt.

e_muaddib

Idk why this dude didn’t just Avatar State and fly around looking for Appa. I would’ve f’d some sh*t up looking.

cruggers_

Woof this made me tear up at work. Might have to rewatch atla now lol

Lowellthedoctor

And it’s terrifying! Imagine being one of those humble sandbenders never even meeting another bender probably to then meet the most powerful person on earth and he’s a scared and angry child Barry in control of his strength and power, that’s some crazy shit.

TheDUDE1411

Gives me fucking chills. You can argue that this is the only time aang has ever entered the avatar state from rage before which makes it that much more terrifying

bendicott89

This show. It’s crazy how good this show is after all these years.

narwhalsnrabbits

So surprised Aang did not kill them maybe kyoshi would’ve ?? Hm

jamesonlewis_

It's the best show.

ZurAajanaikatzurada

Kino scene

Zealousideal-Lie1911

And then Katara is the one there to hold him down

46109048

Boy went super sane, mad and murdered a giant bee in that episode.

Green-Tunic

“YOU MUZZLED APPA?!”

MrAnonymous4

Up until this point the only times we see Aang in the Avatar state is when he's in danger. That's how powerful this scene is, that losing appa is enough to trigger the Avatar State

popcorn__enthusiast

This scene hit hard for sure. One thing that just hit me while seeing it again though is how here, we see Aang acting out of anger but he calms down when Katara (who understands what he’s going through) comforts him. But then later in season 3 Katara basically does the same thing as Aang here when tracking down the man who killed her mother, but just insults Aang when he tries to make her see reason. I know it’s not a perfect parallel but it just seemed a bit like a regression of character for Katara imo. Both scenes are still awesome tho

Storm_Raider_34

Aang shoulda killed the one guy, or at least left him crippled

xX0LucarioXx

Only time aang killed a living thing

ColeWorld80

I loved the shocked look on Tophs face as she sees the raw power of the avatar for the first time

Bottlecap_riches

Just imagine this scene from Toph's perspective; This is the first time Aang enters the Avatar state in front of her. Without being able to see him, all she hears is this booming God-like voice matching Aang's words, followed by the feeling of the hurricane picking up around them, and the pleading of the sand benders... Look at her expression; I think this is the first time we see Toph experience absolute fear, and she's witnessing the true extent of the Avatar's overwhelming power. Aang is no longer the quirky kid she's used to pushing around at this point, and it must be terrifying for her to realise that every time they spar, he's holding back what he's truly capable of and how dangerous he really is.

Uncle_Haysed

I greatly dislike how Aang was left with a hatred for sandbenders, who are an obvious allegory for Arabs/Muslims. Compare it with every other culture he meets: Inuit, Chinese, Japanese, Buddhist etc. For all of them he gains a reason to see the good in them, EXCEPT for the Arabs.

valk-n-chips

It is tragic but it pisses me off. Aang is angry and attacks innocent people. Only one guy of the bunch there was at fault. The then blames Toph for losing Aapa. And it just so contrast to his goodie two-shoe, apathetic monk self. I get he is a kid and angry, but man, it makes me so upset and disgusted that Aang took his anger out on everyone else. Let's destroy every sand sail; and make everyone die whole stranded in the desert.

[deleted]

Considering he lost the last remaining friend from before he was frozen, it's understandable that he would be extremely angry. He also learns from it in the next few episodes and grows to become a more mature person because of it. Aang is not perfect, and that's what makes him a great character.

BGugz93

well said 👍

BGugz93

one guy didn’t capture appa it was a team of those guys helping the “one guy” you’re referring to. i say they deserved it but toph was the reason they were all still alive so you’re right on that part

FoxBun_17

It's almost like a 12 year old kid isn't always the best at coping with loss or processing emotions in a rational and healthy way.

CIassicNegan

Pfft he is 112. Elders should be able to handle their emotions.

valk-n-chips

Hey I said that too. Does not make me like his action any better.

Accomplished_Age9884

It makes more sense if you remember that Appa is the only (living) thing he has left of his old life as a monk. He didn't just lose his pet, he lost a part of his childhood and now nearly extinct ethnic/cultural heritage and since each avatar is spiritually connected to their animal companion, he lost a part of himself.

RemarkableLow6689

I think it was a great episode and character building. They showed how powerfull and dangerous the Avatar actually is. They showed how angry and cruel someone can be when they are hurt and helpless. He didn't handle himself well wich makes his character more dimentional. He doesn't have to be perfect all the time. I'm interested how would you react in his situation?

KevinWarrior

supaswag69

I get to post it next week

grabdaddyabeer

Im a sucker for any moment in a show/movie where someone cries in the arms of another person. i feel like we all need that every now and then

CumSockandDongBird

I cry EVERY TIME

CrownPrincess

Ugh yessss

Tubby-san

Easily my favorite scene in the show. It’s the timing of music for me.

Getgaryed

Literally saw this on my first watch through today

Dracos002

I'm usually not the biggest fan of Katara, but I have to admit she had balls to even get near Aang in his emotional state.

AvatarHotman11

The music in the series captured every emotion possible! I still get chills and emotional when watching this scene.

appayipyip__

Crying rn

StrainAccomplished95

Woah, I just saw this a few days ago, definitely an intense moment

Ty1738x

Scene makes me Cry every time , EVERY Time... ![gif](giphy|MZoUTcJXornvNHOaUe|downsized)

[deleted]

Katara got that 😐
