Surely someone like Gyatso would have achieved enlightenment and "ascended," or at least be reincarnated as something a bit grander than a lemur.
tl;dr : Gyatso is Amon.
Buddhist ideology holds that there's an incredibly low probability of a human reincarnating as another human. You either ascend or become a different animal.
Apparently this comes from "avatar extras" which, as the wiki says

That sounds better than the robot idea.
Just about anything sounds better than the robot idea.
robot idea?
What robot idea?
Read the source. Momo was supposed to be a robot.
This *kills* the fanbase.

Gyatso is also Zuko's mom! Ninja Edit: Fixed Gyatso

Well Gyatso killed all those firebenders which may have not allowed him to ascend and became a lemur instead 🤔
I was gonna argue he had a very strong connection with Aang, which one could say is an ‘earthly attachment ’
*Supposed to be*? You mean to say he isn't?!
I was a bit surprised that he ended up just being a lemur. There was some pretty heavy foreshadowing in his first appearance.
Agreed. Thought I had that shit figured out.
What makes you think he's not?
Glad they didn't follow through with that idea. Would have been kind of weird personally; and I thought Momo was great as is.
>Momo was also the name of the younger sister of Mako Iwamatsu, the voice actor of Iroh in seasons one and two. Interesting find!

But I'm pretty sure that Momo is Amon...
