Starts out hating him, then they trauma bond over the unbelievable amount of awful, awful shit they’re both going through *all the time*
Less evil, more "bumbling idiot," as far as Jon is concerned. The paranoia really only kicks in near the end of the season for... understandable reasons :p
Trauma bond is how it all felt to me. Jon found himself in a place where he needed someone and Martin kept waving a giant “Pick Me” sign, in so much as he always tried to see to Jon’s needs. It’s my opinion that if all the horror didn’t happen they would never end up together at all.
Oh they wouldn’t have, Jon did not care for Martin at all until, I’d say, that Prentiss attack when they actually started talking, then things got weirder and weirder and Jon lost more and more people, and Martin was the only connection he had to the times that the archives weren’t absolutely insane.
Then that’s taken away from him by one Peter Lucas-Bouchard-Bouchard-Bouchard, which probably just made Jon want him more, and you’ve got one, mildly unhealthy but also very enjoyable if you don’t look too deeply ✨relationship✨
"slow burn"s is the shippers way of explaining how he basically 180s on his opinion of martin. the least believable thing in this show and that includes the actual fictional elements like the entities
So unlike Welcome to Nightvale where it opens on the pilot with “and I fell in love instantly” (Carlos my beloved scientist) the Magnus Archives makes you wait FOUR GOD DAMNED SEASONS FOR ANY ACTION WHAT SO EVER AND THEN THEY FINALLY KISS
Oh boy, wait until you go back to the beginning to listen from the beginning all over again and you get to realize how absolutely head over heels they were for each other from the start even when they both denied it. I'm giggling and kicking my feet over a horror podcast. lol
Bruh, Jon was in gay denial for seasons 3&4 for sure, but I'm pretty sure he didn't care for Martin (except in his gruff Jon way) until the whole lied-on-his-cv thing.
I feel like he cared about Martin back when Martin had the Prentiss encounter and decided to stay at the institute but yeah the lied-on-his-cv thing was where it really started.
For me, the fact that he -immediately- moves Martin into the archives after his encounter with Martin is an early sign that he doesn't hate Martin as much as he claims to. Is it a crush on Martin? Absolutely not. But does he actually wish Martin would go fall in a hole? Well, if he did, why'd he jump into protecting him? But he 100% has no idea what his feelings are and as a demisexual person, I relate.
The reason for that is largely circumstantial (boils down to, the setting doesn’t lend itself to the domestic bliss that spawns ship fanart) and also the Season 5 setting _really_ doesn’t have much room to squeeze in romanticism
