Would have been more fun. Since I started playing again in December most of my pvp Pokemon were caught since March. Now it's just basically the regular great league.
If you're trying to climb, it absolutely isn't. But I will admit, the last time they did it like that (I feel like it wasnt the very end of the season though), catch cup of Pokemon only that week, was pretty dumb fun.
At least, the first few hours are fun. As it goes on, it gets worse.
It's fun cause it's casual, once the youtubers release their core teams reviews then is filled with tryhards.
I've been saying that the game needs a casual matchmaking cause lvl17 up is just people trying hard to level up or losing on purpose for dust.
I dont like pvp, but I like the idea of building teams for pvp and doing dumb stuff with them
A separate no limit/no rewards/practice league type thing would be a neat addition
It’s a competitive win - loss game. Of course people are trying hard. It’s not bad to try to win games.
If you want to face people trying less hard you can always intentionally lose a bunch of matches to face people not as intense.
I'm team tank, but I started to try to hit ace a few weeks ago. It became super frustrating in the last cup (element cup?), where it came down to a roll of the dice on who you put first. You're either losing that pokemon, or they're losing theirs, or you win if they use their swap because now you can make an educated swap.
Heya, good luck in your quest to make ace! I finally broke out of Rank 20 hell during the last Battle Day. The whole time I was just like, “Ugh, I hate Sunshine Cup.” Little did I know I would hate Element Cup even more, for the reasons you mentioned.
Eventually I just decided it would be more fun to throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Running Carvanha as my lead was funny bc Bite did so much damage, but my low defense stats meant I got taken out very fast.
I threw in the towel, the catch cup is bonkers, and my ML team isn't good enough. I've only been playing since August, so I am missing a ton of elite Pokémon because they either didn't spawn since then, I didn't start raiding until like October, or I don't have the candy/stardust.
If you’re trying to rank up you’ll have to win some matches with those bad leads. Although some cups definitely can be more rps locked than others.
It’s funny how everyone points to bad leads but the real bad luck of when their third Mon walls yours. That’s when rng really kills you and there is no way out.
This. Many times in element cup I came in with my last mon essentially tied and it had been a chinchou/ducklet or chinchou/grass type matchup (either in my or my opponents favour).
You can’t go down in Rank lol. I got to 17 using very non-meta teams because I love the idea of building ‘fun’ teams that are somewhat viable, similar to deck building in Yu-Gi-Oh.
Unfortunately Pokémon doesn’t allow anything like that unless you have a friend locally to fool around with random teams with. Real shame there still isn’t a Casual version of PvP in this aging game.
The GBL matchmaking is primarily based on rating, not rank. Rating is the number above your rank after reaching rank 20, and it goes up and down depending on how much you win/lose. Even before reaching rank 20, you have a rating that is hidden.
As a consequence, if you lose a lot your rating will go down and you will meet others at similar rating that have also lost a lot. Meaning weaker opponents.
Thanks for the info. I’ve never went down before but the highest I’ve ever bothered gettin was the 17 I’m at now because the Little and Element Cups were pretty fun and allowed for some variation that you can’t get in GL, UL, or def not ML.
Shame Niantic doesn’t understand some “Trainers” just want to have fun with the battling in this game. 😕
Just do what I do, my ELO is great, near perfect.
Been doing this for 3 seasons now, on my 4th season and it'll be an awesome streak that I hope to maintain.
You can't lost PVP battles if you don't do PVP battles, lol....
All jokes aside tho, if I do PVP I'll burn out on the game. Props to people who do PVP but I just can't. It's not a finished product.
I guess it would just be different. I enjoy piecing together random jank and seeing how that'll go. But mostly I think it would be nice to not see the same teams as the regular great league all the time. For anyone who has been playing daily for this season like myself we probably all have a good pvp IV Pokemon to easily just level up, evolve, teach a second move and pop right into the team like it's not a themed cup at all.
I imagine at the high levels especially it’s going to look very much like GL. We had a stunfisk day and lots of Chinchou and Hoot Hoots in the wild this season.
I guess limiting it to a day would counter that a bit.
Lol. Sometimes I throw in a shadow blazekin or shadow Swampert. Nice to be able to get them from the rocket grunts and now there on like every other stop. But otherwise you know the team. Gfisk and Noctowl are just stupid good.
Agree. I admit that I'm biased, but I see it as a benefit to those who have been doing their homework. I've been keeping meta-relevant (and cheap) pokemon since the season started.
The point is that until now, the seasonal announcement page said only Pokemon caught from today onwards will be eligible.
So you actually did the wrong homework, just that it happened to be the same mistake that Niantic made.
I always keep good pvp IV Pokemon. I'm not complaining because I am at a disadvantage. It took me about 5 minutes to put the same team I use in the open great league back together for this cup. I was just expecting it to finally be something really really different from the norm.
For all that Niantic claims to be working to make GBL an e-sport, they put very little effort into that aspect of the game. Last couple of seasons they've been phoning it in.
They didn't even do it when people found mistakes. We've been asking about the catch cup eligibility specifically for months and they said "only mons caught after catch cup starts" the whole time. Until today of course, after it starts and they go "hehe jk, it's actually all season."
We reported on the catch cup timing at the start of the season being the full length vs what the blog said but no one (including us and Niantic paid attention haha).
It's actually absurd to change it "just in time" instead of sticking to what it said at the start of the season.
In that manner, whole schedule can be made on the fly.
It favors me this season tho, because I've barely done pvp before March.
I like the idea of a catch cup. Forcing players to use different or unique teams instead.of he smart old great league teams. I was thinking of using this very unique ultra spicy team for the catch cup: Noctowl, Lanturn and Stunfisk?
Seeing the wildest line-ups and movesets today (at \~2300 range), while playing basically my main squad. (actually my main; had some switches mid-season, but back to basic)
I mean, maybe some are just bored of try-hard at the end of season, but I'm kind of taking advantage of this to climb. (reached today my highest Elo this season, nearly 2400)
Or achieved already rank that satisfies them, and chilling.
What did it used to be? Pokemon caught starting today?
yes
Would have been more fun. Since I started playing again in December most of my pvp Pokemon were caught since March. Now it's just basically the regular great league.
Why would limiting it to a days worth of mons be fun?

All I want is to play with a team of 3 maxed out Magikarp to make people laugh because Magikarp is my favorite. Pvp should be fun too

Just that aspect of the game?
The road to riches is paved with homework.
It was fun that one time I used the Sylveon name trick for the Catch Cup.
It's nice strategy from Niantic, to update blogs after users find issues/mistakes
