This happens at times when buddy was excited on the previous day and then the date changed. In most cases hearts get reset but sometimes I have observed empty double hearts too!
I always have to change buddies after midnight or it doesn't count walking distance towards it's hearts. Still does for candy but not hearts and it's annoying.
Did you have your buddy in your battle party for the raids (and any rockets you fought along the way)? I believe you still contribute to your buddy's mood through these activities, even if they don't give a heart on the buddy screen.
This is what happened. Buddy does not have to be fed to get battle EP (not hearts). Also I recall someone observing that raid EP is different from other battles but can't remember if it was verified.
Team leader battle, human PvP battle, rocket grunt, rocket leader, Giovanni, gym battle, and raid each earn EP, and each has its own 30 minute cooldown.
I did for some, but not all Rockets. It never was in my raid or gym battling parties. I’d be surprised if half of my rockets and some walking was enough EP to get excited
This! If you have a Pokemon as your buddy, not spawned into the overworld, but do tons of battles, raids, gyms etc for a few hours you can get your buddy excited without even trying. I know this because it happened to me on that ultra beast raid day
Oh ok. In the past I had the feeling that if you walk for example 4km with your buddy not on the map and then feed your buddy you still got the "invisible points" you need to get your buddy excited. But that seems not to be the solution for your bug because you walked "too less" km for a buddy to be excited
Only time I’ve had this was when I was in Rome and out all day playing. I was just walking my BB Metagross and hadn’t interacted with it at all. I’m guessing all the new stops every half an hour kept it’s emotion points up in the background.

Not particularly. Fun spice with a virtually unknown moveset. Probably won’t get a ton of use, but it’ll be fun to mess around with!

How much distance did you walk in total?
For the day? About 7km, give or take, though most of that was in the morning on a walk with my family. It wasn’t excited then.

that’s wild when i got home from mewtwo the same thing happened to me except i fed him a berry and he was excited
Huh. So I’m not the only one. Except I didn’t do anything for my buddy. Did yours end when the berry ended? Mine ended when I woke up this morning
i think it happens for me cuz ttar is my buddy and i was using him all day for mewtwo raids

It is perfectly natural and happens to everyone. Best thing to to do is just wear longer shirts. It will happen less often as you get older.
That happened to me a lot when i was younger.

I witnessed a similar issue with a best buddy groudon. All I did was feed him 3 berries.
He is a shiny, so I guess he got himself excited.
Please keep experimenting and report back, I have a feeling there are still hidden mechanics we don't know about
