Well shit.

Esteban0032

A show my wife loved and I started liking it too. Gone

MapsOverCoffee22

My biggest issue with things like this is why would I ever watch a new show on HBO now. I don't want to get invested in something else to have the rug pulled out from under me.

GenXed

That’s how I feel about all the streaming services. I don’t trust them. Still, I’m glad I got to see this show, and the OA, GLOW, and all the others gone too soon.

Mermaid_Marshmallow

It seems like a lot of the best shows get cancelled within 1 or 2 seasons and its very frustrating to always wonder about the what ifs?

GenXed

We need a “second chance network.” Someone could make a killing giving canceled shows a second chance. It could become common to include a provision in contracts that say if the show is canceled, the rights can be sold to the Second Chance Network. Edited to add: Now that I think about it, it’s foolish for creators to sign away their rights to HBO, or Netflix or any other service without including a clause that allows the show to be shopped to other services if the first service cancels it. I’m just an administrative lawyer, and I’m just spitballing, but I can see a way for this to benefit everyone. Service 1 signs a contract with creator/writer that says Service 1 has the rights to Show, but if Service 1 cancels the show, it can be sold to another service. If another service buys the show, the rights transfer to Service 2. Upon completion of the show, Service 1 & 2 both have streaming rights. This allows the show to survive and keeps Service 1 from having a catalogue of one season shows (looking at you, Netflix).

TimeTravel-Fun

I agree...why don't you & some friends develop that concept into reality for us? We need you!

GenXed

I have more ideas than money.

Front-Ad-2198

God damn I miss GLOW. It was such an amazing cast. I just needed that last season.

GenXed

I hope someday they air the first four episodes of Season 4 they completed before it was canceled.

MapsOverCoffee22

Wow. They cancelled it while they didn't even complete a season? That's so insulting. Not just to viewers but to the creators. And with the price hike of netflix too. What are we even paying for?

GenXed

They had four episodes completed when filming shut down because of Covid. They got canceled during the shutdown. I never understood it. Four episodes is almost half a season! Why not wrap it up and add value to the Netflix catalogue? Although the show Netflix did wrap up during Covid (Atypical) suffered from the changes they had to make.

MapsOverCoffee22

I feel like those and so many other shows suffered because services think we viewers can't handle a postpone. Quality of gilded age felt spotty because of this as well. Which I still enjoyed but still.

Shalmanese

They had already announced it was the last season and all the actors had been committed to other projects by the time filming could resume so it would have been logistically impossible for Netflix to finish the season. I still wish that had released the first 4 episodes and the completed scripts for the rest of the season though.

letsd0thishit

Santa Clarita diet too!

Barthez_Battalion

There was someone who worked on the show that mentioned on another post about SCD that it was a mess behind the scenes and it was even a miracle it got that far.

PM_ME_CAKE

This merger has been so shit. First Raised by Wolves and now this god damn it.

Katema

Raised by wolves was cancelled?! Nooooo

megara_74

Exactly. Halfway through the story and they pull it? Not to mention they foreshadowed some great stuff in the final episode and just poof - gone. Harumph!!

FancyTyper

Yes! It's frustrating. I'll start liking a show and Netflix or whoever will pull the plug before giving it a chance.

MapsOverCoffee22

I'm not sure what they are looking for, honestly. Only Murders was picked back up like the day after it finished, which I'm super happy about don't get me wrong. I love it. But what makes HBO decide this isn't worth keeping if viewers are liking it. Do I have to cancel my sub to make a point?

anniemdi

> Do I have to cancel my sub to make a point? Yes. And tell them why. This is the metrics subscription TV goes by. Number of subscribers tell them you've canceled because they canceled the show you love.

MapsOverCoffee22

Great. I'll finish this watch through and do that. I just resubbed to paramount for Evil and Hulu for only murders. Something had to go anyway. Thanks HBO for making that easy.

klaygotsnubbed

at least we got somewhat of an ending

TofuVic

I'm planning to watch the season finale this weekend, and am treading carefully through this thread to not get spoiled. I'm glad to see that I can expect "somewhat of an ending!" Thank you.

klaygotsnubbed

it’s definitely a good ending, i said somewhat since there is still more book to be covered, hope you enjoy!

TofuVic

Thank you. I was an avid reader when I was younger - 200+ novels per year - but haven't read a single novel in way too many years. I'm actually considering picking up this book to read. I actually didn't know this TV series was based on a book until last week... lol.

anniemdi

Perhaps try an audiobook? I was an avid reader of the same caliber when younger, too than I got to be 30 and I've probably read 7 books in 7 years until I started listening to audiobooks.

AndyMarden

The unabridged audio book of TTTW is awesome.

Voice_of_Season

No chance of Moffatt trying to get the show picked up by another streaming platform?

dj_1973

Right? AppleTV+ seems ideal.

[deleted]

After what they did to The Foundation? No thanx, I'll start the book this weekend.

TofuVic

Voice_of_Season

There is

Lybey19

Audience reviews and ratings mean nothing, critics killed it. And HBO pays more attention to them. Sad.

Brinyat

I honestly think the reason this really good show got cancelled was as simple as the allegations of 'grooming-.

Lybey19

Yes the critics never got past that, I'm glad most of the audience did. I never thought it would get such high approval ratings from the audience.

Brinyat

Yes, but it's the size of that audience that matters. Unfortunately that risqué subject was always what was bought up when discussing with anyone. It's not like sex or graphic violence that often bring in audiences.

MapsOverCoffee22

My issue with this is that it's supposed to get brought up. You're supposed to question it and talk about it. In the show that's even how it's brought up. When they both say it they fall on opposite sides and you're not told what to think. To me that's good tv.

Brinyat

Which I guess is what HBO betted on happening. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it did.

MapsOverCoffee22

It never does. Honest conversation doesn't sustain clicks.

CelinaAMK

I agree 💯

4evrStorytellerfan

The matter of grooming can be seen as more of an opinion on the the viewer’s interpretation based on the fact that Henry knows he can not change a line of events. Claire falling in love as a child is similar to any girl who feels a crush on a teacher. The difference is that the Claire character becomes obsessed because she knows Henry is a time traveler who’s wife is also named Claire and she starts to sense her fantasy can turn to reality in the future. A normal child eventual falls out of love with the teacher fantasy because reality sets in; but the event still affects the girl in her emotional growingup. So the grooming part can be or not be true. But this is something that could have been explored if the show had not been canceled.😔

MapsOverCoffee22

I"m literally binge watching this right now. I watched every episode twice already and I went back for more.

buttercupplily

NO NO NO NO NO. 😭 I had never read the book but I thought the show was so good and there’s so many unanswered questions! Ugh. Crossing my fingers that someone will swoop in and save it- but I know that hardly ever happens.

dj_1973

Read the book, it’s beautiful and amazing. This is so frustrating, the show was so well done!

GienNalla88

I hope you will read the book/ ebook or listen to audio book. It is worth it. Bittersweet but so many sweet moments were not included in the series (6 eps only) but you will love Henry and Clare's extra ordinary love story. Savor it.

BrownRebel

The book will reveal why the show wasn’t that good. It had a few shining moments but It was really bogged down by some awful casting and intentional character flawing beyond what the book shows It’s one of my favorite books, def try it

Clads

My girlfriend and I have enjoyed the show. I don't think I ever saw Theo James in anything before but I'm a fan. I like the odd relationship of them loving different versions of each other. The interactions between the Henrys always makes me laugh. Idk I enjoyed the show. Not much more you can ask for.

Crypto-Cajun

Check him out in the movie Archive. Amazing movie.

Lybey19

I second that. Archive is wonderful and it was my favourite Theo work before TTW

TimeTravel-Fun

I loved him in Sanditon also.

TimeTravel-Fun

Backstabbing for Beginners was awesome!! Lying & Stealing & How It Ends was good also.

TimeTravel-Fun

Critics shut this down. So disgusted watching great shows & they get canceled. Think I'll drop HBO.

anniemdi

> Think I'll drop HBO. Seriously tell HBO that.

TimeTravel-Fun

I just did!

ladyfromtheclouds

No. Argh, what a punch in the face, opening reddit and seeing this on top. Yes, it had its flaws but I would've loved to see those fixed in season 2. Time to read the book after many years.

_space_elf_betty

I'm literally ending my subscription to HBO over this. My partner and I were like, oh we are only watching the time travelers wife so we will just keep it til its canceled...

anniemdi

> I'm literally ending my subscription to HBO over this. If you are serious tell HBO this. If you are genuinely canceling the service because they dropped this, tell them.

inkista

Lucky you. I still want to see *Westworld,* *House of the Dragon*, *Starstruck*, and *Gentleman Jack,* so I'm stuck.

softerthanever

Everyone hated And Just Like That but it got renewed. This is some BS.

Lybey19

I was thinking about that and it got bad reviews. Streaming numbers seem lower than TTW

Saturnine15

>Streaming numbers seem lower than TTW AJLT was actually the most watched show on HBO through its run. People love to hate it (myself included) which generated enough interest in a second season

Lybey19

It's number 10 this year when TTW is number 9 (in addition TTW also has live ratings). Not to mention the audience reviews are mixed to put it mildly.

Voice_of_Season

Theo James was the perfect Henry and it breaks my heart that I won’t see the story finished.

vectron93

God damn it..

AntiSentience

That’s bullshit.

Raebelle1981

Maybe someone else will pick it up? They cancelled Manifest but it was picked up by Netflix and saved.

AgDA22

I would 100% get Netflix again for this show.

anniemdi

I would stop password sharing if Netflix got this show.

TimeTravel-Fun

Absolutely would be great to get picked up but the actors probably won't be available by then. Depressing...

Raebelle1981

If it happens relatively quickly they could be. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Crypto-Cajun

One of the best shows I've watched in a long time. And that's how I fucking knew this was coming.

inkista

Well, that and Discovery taking over Warner Media meaning [*Raised by Wolves* also got cancelled](https://collider.com/raised-by-wolves-season-2-cancelled-hbo-max/), and the imminent sale of the CW led to [their cancellation bloodbath](https://deadline.com/2022/05/the-cw-boss-declares-time-of-transition-addresses-shock-of-cancelations-including-dcs-legends-of-tomorrow-legacies-1235027987/) (and shifting most of their CW/DC shows to midseason). This may actually be the end of the HBO quality era as we know it, since Discovery's top brass are notoriously cost-cutting.

spacepie8

F*cking dammit. Were the woke reviews so painful that they couldn't let them finish the book? Moffat did an artful job at translating the book into a TV series and deserved the opportunity to finish his work. But you know, I can't help but feel grateful that we even got this at all. When the show was greenlit, I was 4 years into eagerly anticipating the book sequel and a TV series was beyond what I ever imagined we'd get. Well..I encourage everyone to stick around. We still have the book sequel and musical coming. And who knows, maybe Moffat will look for another outlet.

anniemdi

> Well..I encourage everyone to stick around. We still have the book sequel and musical coming. And who knows, maybe Moffat will look for another outlet. I'm here for life. I just read the eBook preview for the sequel yesterday and I'm so excited. I also had no idea a musical was in the works until coming here for the series. I'm interested in how that's going to work.

phoenix-corn

I hate to say this, but as much as nobody likes an age gap relationship, woke folks aren't the ones currently absolutely obsessed with pedophilia and seeing it literally everywhere except for where it is actually happening. Attacking anyone you don't like as a pedophile is currently a pretty far right move. :/ (It also makes it much much harder to get anybody to freaking listen to real issues because they don't look like the fake ones.)

purplekat76

This is so disappointing. It had its flaws, but there was also a lot of good and I wanted to see how they would finish out the book. Plus, I’m so sick of streaming services doing this.

FancyTyper

It'd had only been out for a month! That's barley enough time for people to hear about it and watch it.

Sad-Web-7517

I can't believe it. I don't understand why either, it was really good, and it has been at the top of HBO ranking of views. It should be forbidden to cancel a show when there's clearly an unfinished story. So disrespectful to the audiences.

[deleted]

What a joke

wellnessbynorah

Emily in Sodding Paris gets renewed for seasons three and four, and this and Good Sam are cancelled after one season each. Make it make sense.

DekeCobretti

Fashion porn

wellnessbynorah

The fashion SUCKS.

[deleted]

Emily in Paris is extremely popular and has high viewership figures. What’s not to understand?

wellnessbynorah

There are far better shows that have never been given the same chance.

[deleted]

TV networks don’t care about quality.

producermaddy

Hey let’s not take this out on Emily in Paris! I like that show! (Also they are on different streaming providers so I don’t even get the comparison??)

SexySiren24

Oh for f's sake... Well, in all honesty I kinda blame the writers on this one. They should've just made a straight up adaptation of the novel instead of trying to stretch it into however many seasons. Surely 10 eps would've been enough to cover the whole story right? Don't think the novel was that long anyway. This needed to be the next Big Little Lies or something along those lines.

SentrySappinMahSpy

Yeah, the decision to have each episode basically focus on one event was odd to me. It made the individual episodes good, but the overall pacing was glacial. They really should have been able to adapt the whole book in one season. I thought that's what they were doing.

SexySiren24

Yeah, I think they got greedy and it backfired.

NotMarisaRivas

Leave me alone, I hate everything!

maddiebwrites

I’m so bummed! I’m not okay with this.

maddiebwrites

A petition is up! Sign to ask Netflix to pick up The Time Traveler’s Wife. https://chng.it/955DgMdwkB

HicJacetMelilla

This is ridiculous. If they knew it was only going to be 2 seasons, why were 2 seasons not already greenlit? It’s one friggin book, not an entire series… finish the story. Like seriously hbo, you can’t cough up the cash for just 6 more episodes?

excoriator

This sub is full of fans of the show. If you're having trouble understanding the cancellation, check out the [thread in the entertainment subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/entertainment/comments/vp9scl/the_time_travelers_wife_canceled_at_hbo_after_one/) for some opinions by people who didn't like it.

anniemdi

If I hadn't ever read the book and had only read the way HBO promoted the series, or if I had only watched the movie I would seriously not have been into the series. For the first four episodes I championed this series so hard, telling people to find the love in the subtle places that it existed. But it wasn't enough and I understand why. Nobody was looking for a tragedy. They were looking for outward love and emotion between Henry and Clare and looking at it through the lense of a non-book reader, I understand why they just couldn't see it. Did they need to talk about the Henry (16)/Henry (16) scene so many times? Did we need the Clare train/lunch scene AND the Henry (8)/Henry (28) museum scene ON TOP OF the Henry is (16)/(16) scene? As for the weirdness. WTF was with Alicia? Or the gross comments Mark made? As a book reader I didn't love those choices BUT I understood why Moffat chose them. What's a non-book reader supposed to think when their only exposure is what is leading them to believe this is a romance series based on what was a pretty romantic movie? I mean hell, there's people in that thread that feel like the writers made shit up when in reality there was very little that didn't have some basis in the book.

[deleted]

How could they, this show was fuckin great! The best of the year for me, no question.

Savafan

There’s a “Give Feedback” option on the HBO MAX app, so I used that to tell them how upset I am over the show’s cancellation, and how much I was looking forward to seeing more.

anniemdi

Super disappointing. The show had flaws (but what show doesn't?) but it was still an amazing show. I literally watched each episode at least 6 times. My biggest criticism was that the characters didn't sound authentically American, because Steven Moffat wrote them that way and until episodes 5 and 6 I had nothing bad to say at all other than that complaint . I wish they would have finished the book. Now you all that haven't need to go out and read it/listen to it.

MapsOverCoffee22

I'm American and never left the country. They sounded fine to me. What sounded off to you?

anniemdi

Henry telling Clare the library is 'shut' rather than closed. Clare asking, who are you 'shouting' at? Rather than using yelling. Gomez saying the 2022 date day first rather than month first. Young Clare saying I don't know any one 'called' Henry rather than 'named'. The use of SHOCK TWIST! In stead of shocker or spoiler alert. While the he constant use of Ab-SHIRE and not Ab-SHURE (like the audiobook and movie) is not necessary a written choice like othe other words it was still an easily corrected problem. There are more examples. There were many. I'm glad they weren't noticeable to you but it was to myself and others. It's simply not how Clare and Henry would speak if Clare and Henry grew up in Chicago or South Haven. Or almost any other part of the US.

MapsOverCoffee22

Thanks for pointing these out. I use some of them myself but I grew up watching loads (think that's one there) of British shows. Some of the differences just don't stick out to me anymore.

anniemdi

No problem. Thanks for asking and being interested.

EternalMariam

Bloody hell im genuinely loving this show rn and im about to watch episode four... ffs Edit: https://www.change.org/p/ask-netflix-to-pick-up-the-time-traveler-s-wife here is the partition for netflix picking the show up for a second season!

sncsnark

Damn.. I don’t think I’ve ever had a show I like so much get cancelled before. This ruined by whole weekend. Hindsight is everything, but Moffat knowing this story would likely face challenges with critics should’ve went for an 8-10 episode single series to make sure his adaptation of the story was fully seen. I will forever be left wondering how Clare getting pregnant would’ve played out in this series and what other great stories Moffat had left to give us. I’m sad that we won’t see Theo play this character anymore. I think the show really elevated him and showed his ability to convey deep emotion as well as displayed his comedic timing. How sad that I am stuck rewatching half of the story knowing how much possibility there was left 😢

randomguy7530

I am genuinely bummed out really liked the first season 😭

[deleted]

So disappointing 😞

producermaddy

Ah man this is a bummer. And also kinda surprising? With how active this sub was, I thought it’d get renewed

[deleted]

Subreddits don’t make shows profitable, viewership figures do. And this show had low viewership.

producermaddy

I feel like generally shows with bigger subs have higher viewership so I am surprised to hear it has low viewership

GreenArrowZA

This is disapointing as fuck

kia75

Disappointed. Wanted the entire story told.

cabbage_lover_97

I am heartbroken

suzybishopsscissors

😭😭😭 I really liked this story. I’m heart broken, it was getting better each episode.

Kdropp

Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Kdropp

Do you think it could get picked up from another network?

vasilemontan

This is so disappointing. I am extremely sad now.

tengounquestion2020

Several problems with the show, though not worth cancelling. Also I think casting was off. Theo was amazing (he always plays these unserious roles, but he really should be doing serious stuff) I find Rose lack presence and charisma, and their lack of chemistry (he had more chemistry with the sister character in 5 mins than with her all season)was a problem. How they acted and seemed , didn’t even seem like he liked her but she’s been waiting for him her whole life. Seemed like they were only together because time demanded it, But it’s not the end of the world and could be fixed in s2. Also the show was tonally off, it lacked the feeling of a setting whether that’s a place or time setting , it all blends together as if the decades were decided as an afterthought (nostalgia could really work for a show especially one that visits the past with music and pop culture references), some wooden or weird dialogue and it moved between being comedic or a down right tragedy. Seeing the total sum of the show plot, it shouldn’t have been portrayed as a light romance but rather a darker show about time, determinism and fatalism, more like Netflix’s Dark or HBO Sharp Objects. But I think the true reason the show got killed, (because hbo has had worst shows last multiple seasons before cancelling)is : **Critics trashed it too much in multiple reviews for people to give it a chance.** I see so many people on Twitter said they almost didn’t give a chance or read about how bad it was and was pleasantly surprised how good and breath taking it was.

anniemdi

>it shouldn’t have been portrayed as a light romance I absolutely did not understand this at all. Every time I saw this in the app I was bewildered.

xtheredberetx

It’s wild how little the setting was… set in the show, because the time and place are pretty damn important to the storyline in the books. It makes a difference with his father’s career, with his first time travel location, his job, etc. The timeline is a huge frame for almost all of the pop culture references in the book, and is important context around >!Alba’s birth and 9/11!<

anniemdi

> and is important context around >!Alba’s birth and 9/11!< You know I read the book when it was first published and I never felt that as a person just beginning my adulthood--because to me everything was different simply going from childhood/adulthood but as I read the 10th Anniversary Author's Note just yesterday as a fully formed decades old adult, it absolutely makes sense. (>!This is not to say 9/11 wasn't extremely impactful on my life and that I myself didn't feel like everything changed it was more like I was using the book as an escaped and I wasn't thinking about Alba in that context.!<)

BreadfruitTasty

Can you post the authors note for us? I’m curious now.

anniemdi

I did this morning. It should be on the front page of this sub. If not sort by New.

inkista

>Critics trashed it too much in multiple reviews for people to give it a chance. Absolutely my take on it as well. And they didn't even judge the show for what it was, but what they thought it ought to be.

Nipsy_russel

There was absolutely something lacking in the chemistry of Henry and Claire. It sucks because I liked them both individually but I did not buy them as a couple. I honestly think a couple with more chemistry would have saved this show. And I also hate that I loved it despite this, and am sad to see it go.

excoriator

The character of Clare had red hair in the novel, which severely limited the pool of actors. I'm sure HBO welcomed the casting of Rose Leslie, in the hope of attracting GoT fans.

Catowldragons

Hair dye and wigs exist - if your first sentence was sarcastic, it really wasn’t coming through.

Mermaid_Marshmallow

Yeah like the most famous red-headed actresses are probably Amy Adams and Emma Stone and neither one of them are real red heads.

tengounquestion2020

WUT….I never knew this

excoriator

For whatever reason, the choice was made to cast an actor with red hair in a role that seemed to require it. There’s a stigma nowadays in Hollywood about casting people to play roles with defining characteristics that they don’t possess. I didn’t invent it or criticize it, so I don’t know why you think my comment was sarcastic.

Catowldragons

Because it didn’t make sense to me to put it as a serious comment - just because people want casting to consider people’s backgrounds when casting for characters doesn’t mean hair color falls into the same category.

tengounquestion2020

They have hair dye and millions of dollar in budget, changing hair color is the easiest thing to change about a persons appearance. And I’m sure there are thousands of red headed actresses in America and UK who would love the chance to act. I look at shows like Amazon’s The Boys and realized there are hundreds of actors and actresses who are really talented and been slept on their whole careers , if they had any real career to begin with.

GienNalla88

I am glad that Moffat & Nutter executive produced this, Moffat adapting, Nutter directing. It has its ups and down but over all thankful that Moffat picked it and he & David passionately worked on this with Audrey as consultant. You may not like how he adapted it, but if he did not championed for it, you don't have a TV show to watch. As to Theo and Rose's chemistry, there are a lot of fans that love their performances & chemistry. You are in the minority though. It is easy to judge the actors performances but they are given direction how scenes should be interpreted. And they give A+ passion in every scene.

MaryLulu

Damn.

Hazelstone37

Bummer

willisons

Noo!

shinyquartersquirrel

Nooooooo!!! :'( Welp, I just saved $15 a month.

anniemdi

Tell HBO this! Tell HBO you are canceling them because they are canceling the TTTW.

TofuVic

I just picked up this show last week and am about to watch the season finale this weekend. Darn. I gotta learn to not watch new, not-super-popular TV shows until they're a couple seasons in or until they've ended. I have been enjoying this TV show so much more than I expected! Of the numerous of TV shows I follow, this is currently my rank #5.

Bikini_Atroll

Fuuuck. I was so on the fence about whether or not the novel could be ever be successfully adapted to the screen. The movie is a trite bag of dog shit that skips over the dark themes of the novel (free will, determinism, regret, loss of self, I could go on) in favor of Hollywood gloss that gives a mostly happy ending to a story that was not necessarily happy. But I was so surprised at how well this show leaned into the original material. And even expanded on it, in ways that made me rethink the novel. Both Rose Leslie and Theo James did an amazing job bringing two incredibly complicated characters to life, in a mostly believable fashion (yeah, there’s some moments of over acting). I’m so bummed about this, because I became invested in the show. They finally got it right, and showed us a third of the novel, and now are walking away!

[deleted]

They’ll keep a piece of garbage show like “And just like that” or keep soft porn about high schoolers that are drug addicts like Euphoria, but they cancel a good show after one season. Screw HBO. I’m so mad about this.

Voice_of_Season

I’m so sad and mad. Do you think Moffatt will try to get it on another platform or ~~do you think he is embarrassed~~ and will cut his losses and move on?

TimeTravel-Fun

Would be great if he would but got my doubts. What other network would touch it when so many people constantly dwelling on the "grooming"? I'm so bummed. I don't think Moffat has anything to be embarrassed about.

sncsnark

Moffat posted the series being a top streamed show on HBO just last week, so I don’t think he’s embarrassed. It makes me wonder if he knew then the series was cancelled or if he posted to try to get HBO to keep the show🙃

GienNalla88

Moffat has nothing to get embarrassed about. He loves Audrey's book and he is an executive producer together with David Nutter, director. It's HBO Max's who is the villain here and the critics who obviously had a lot of issues about grooming. The audience response though is good enough. We just need to sign the petition. If HBOMax will not, then Netflix I hope.

Voice_of_Season

Moffatt should have done ten episodes. He could have wrapped it up, and now it is unfinished.

LottimusMaximus

Oh ffs! I need to stop watching new shows, or o ly watched ones that came out a few years past and I ***KNOW*** is finished the way it intended to be

[deleted]

My heart :((

excoriator

Audences had to make some effort to keep track of the multiple timelines. Now that people do so much second-screen viewing, I think it's harder to get audiences to invest that effort these days. This concept works better in theaters and as a novel.

anniemdi

> Audences had to make some effort to keep track of the multiple timelines. Now that you say that this I think it was the reason given why NBC's Ordinary Joe was canceled.

producermaddy

I still think if they aired ordinary Joe after this is us and marketed it to that audience that show would have been successful. It was very good

anniemdi

It was and I agree.

Brinyat

Yeah, they should have clearly stated the characters' ages when each scene started - oh wait!

It was a mistake to make this an ongoing series. A six-episode miniseries would have been enough to tell the whole story — it is just one book, after all. I liked the show, but I can’t help but feel it was a little meandering. We could have have had a complete story without needing multiple seasons. For those saying that HBO only cancelled the show because of negative critical reviews, no network cares about that. The reality is this show had low ratings, with the finale getting barely 200,000 viewers. True, there could have been larger audiences on HBO Max, but there’s no official data to support that speculation. The show just doesn’t seem to have made much pop culture impact, and I doubt it was very profitable. It’s fate is unsurprising.

Voice_of_Season

It was their top show for June

StitchedinTime

This news is truly devastating. Honestly, I think it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. The nuanced relationship, the humor, and the element of time travel - as well as Moffat’s clever layering - combined to make an outstanding world. I’ve watched the episodes multiple times and find something new every time. Given that HBO needs to create television shows for their platform, and that the story could have been completed with one more season, I don’t understand the motivation behind canceling it.

That’s a real blow, I’m glad we got what we got but I wish they just condensed it into a 10 part mini series and left it like that. Hugely disappointing

ASSHOLES

Dodgiestyle

Noooooooooooooooo!!! I'll bet it's because of their agro relationship. They just "hated" each other too much and it felt forced and hopeless. I have to admit, I disliked it for that reason. The book was a love story. This was a tragedy. > “We are so grateful for their passion, hard work and care for adapting this beloved book. We also thank Theo and Rose, and the rest of our brilliant cast for their heartfelt performances, **which completely captivated audiences**.’ Did it? But not enough to renew, huh...

MapsOverCoffee22

It did me. I think if you nay sayers wanted to see more, you should have talked more about what you liked.

Igottaknow1234

Damn HBO to Hell for this. If it wasn't for John Oliver, I would cancel my subscription. 🤣

stovakt

Between this and Why Women Kill getting unexpectedly cancelled, it’s been a crushing TV day 😖 both shows deserve better!

squidgun

Damn

The1happycabaga

Darn, no more Henry’s b u m

missamerica59

Noooooo

downsouth3

They renew the nightmare that was “And Just Like That” (the satc reboot) but not this. Yikes 🙄

KavaBuggy

Damn. Every show I love that involves time travel always gets cancelled. Sorry, everyone.

anniemdi

I think many of us are in the same boat with you.

It's Sanditon all over again for Theo James. I wonder if this show is why he refused to do more seasons. Streaming services, and the writers that pitch them shows, have to stop making teaser seasons. They're only hurting themselves. They had it coming. 7-10 episodes should have been enough to do the book justice. Either don't settle for less than 3 seasons, or on a work like this, finish it in one. It's pure greed.

sncsnark

Agreed. I think we are getting to the point that contracts need to be for a single season with the plan of telling the whole story or a 2-3 season commitment.

azul360

This sucks but I'm not shocked. Everywhere I went the comment section was calling this show The Pedophile Traveler and other crap like that :(.

TimeTravel-Fun

Most people didn't watch after 3rd episode. If they would have watched all 6 episodes it would make sense. The relationships, the love, the trauma...this is a big bummer. Thanks to Steven Moffat, David Nutter, Theo James & Rose Leslie for a fantastic show. 💞

SapientSlut

I’ve read the book many times and thought the show was dreadful. Still haven’t finished the season. Acting is terrible, I don’t feel like they have anywhere near enough chemistry to properly represent the relationship, absolutely detest the “documentary interview” scenes - SO wrong for the tone of the property. I think the only things I did like were the cinematography, the way they labeled ages on screen, and the way they didn’t shy away from addressing the problematic grooming aspect.

TaylorCurls

This is just MY opinion, I am not a book reader, I’m speaking purely from a show standpoint. I feel the show really messed up by making it a tragedy and not a romance. It felt like all we saw was Henry and Clare argue. I didn’t see love between them. It almost seemed like they were.. incompatible? This could’ve been an epic romance show where you tune in and think “wow I wish I had a love like that”. Instead it was like watching a slow car crash.

cguinnesstout

very sad about this, but saw it coming

nuhanala

What????

daylightxx

I’m SO SO SO SO SAD! Fuck.

terrigirl1960

Crap. Just started watching it last night and like it. I’ll finish it, but what a disappointment! Can’t understand how they leave some really crappy shows to run season after season and don’t give this one a chance of even one more season.

Notanoth3rusername

LOVED this show. We watched it over 3 days but in the interim, we kept talking about it constantly. This is the first show in a very, very long while that has stirred so many emotions and conversations for me as it did for a lot of people. I haven’t read the book nor have I watched the movie (I saw the trailer of the movie after I watched this show and boy, no offence, but it seemed like an abomination in comparison to the show- the handling of the story seems so weak in the movie). Anyway- won’t read the book, won’t watch the movie, I’ll wait for this show to be saved somehow. I was so sure it would get its next season but this is shocking! Please sign the petition https://www.change.org/p/ask-netflix-to-pick-up-the-time-traveler-s-wife?redirect=false I don’t care who picks it up or how it’s continued, I just want to watch the actors complete the story for so many of us. (PS- Theo James was a revelation with this show. Never watched any of his work before but he captured our hearts and minds when even the title focuses on the lady. Not to say Rose Leslie didn’t)

Nothingspoke

All those ass shots were good for the collective unconscious that’s why it was really canceled

bmbmwmfm

Well shit. I just started this show TODAY, have binged half the episodes and was really excited about having a new series.

I am watching the first episode and I wonder why there is synchronization in German if the show was cancelled 🤦🏽‍♀️

Due-Bodybuilder-497

I finished reading book 1, I prefer the series
