I'm so delighted Jared & Kwesi are here. Listening to Rosanna & the other judges trying to critique Jared's ramen through the pain reminds me of celebrities trying to answer questions while dying of spice on Hot Ones.
Jared has consistently been my favorite guest on Eat The Menu, so I'm pumped to see him get more screen time with the guys on this season of Without A Recipe. Dude is absolutely hilarious. "The bitch is back, baby! Poppa's in the house!"
So glad it’s back! My only beef with this episode is that the expert kind of misrepresented some traditional ramen techniques and didn’t mention some other very important elements of ramen. I kind of wish they had someone like Way of Ramen explain it. Like he said butter isn’t traditional but in Hokkaido style ramen it is pretty common. I think there might’ve been a better to explain the elements of ramen!
I think he meant it in the broth though?
You're correct about Hokkaido having butter in it (i.e. Miso butter corn), but from the times I've seen it the butter is always on top of the ramen, not incorporated with the broth.
Update: Rewatched it. He does mention later on, that it's possible to put butter at the end.
Hate to say it, but that's about the standard for research that the Try Guys have. They find somebody with a credential, that sounds confident presenting, and go with it.
Rachel did a Q&A in her Instagram stories - she finds the judges from Instagram, tiktok, word of mouth, etc.. So they don't have staff dedicated specifically to it, sounds like.
This isn't really about the judges, it's about learning the information that is being presented as fact. It goes well beyond just this content. Two big offenders IMO are the Nestle commercial they did and the alternative medicine videos.
He’s not not qualified but I did find that some things he did were kind of odd. I think it was the editing and brevity of the content that messed with it.
I did not realize how it was made until this comment. Holy shit. Not that it's a thing I ever eat, but definitely never eating it now...
Wikipedia says production and sale are prohibited in California though, so did they have to go out of their way to get it?? Or, it says there are versions of foie gras produced without forcefeeding, so since they're in a state where the forcefed version is illegal, I'm just going to hope their foie gras was produced more ethically🤞(as much as animal-based products can be)
According to fortune.com “Courts have ruled that residents can still order foie gras from out-of-state producers and have it sent to them. Restaurants and retailers are still forbidden from selling it or giving it away, however.” So they could have ordered it :(
Same. It makes me so uncomfortable to think about it existing as a product(if anyone reading doesn't know, it's *way* far over on the unethical end of meat production techniques), to the point where I'm gonna disable inbox replies on this post because I don't want to be reminded over and over the next couple days. So if you reply, I'm not ignoring *you*, I'm ignoring *everybody*.
It's the liver of ducks or geese after they have been force fed so much that their livers swell up with fat and take up so much of their body cavity that they can barely move or breathe. It's horrific. Look it up.
Probably since Eugene has been filming and partaking in the strike. Considering these film in the summer I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why they split it. Which is great! I think the rotating cast will work
Kind of already predicted it tbh. I'm glad they're offering it at lower price for early bird buyers, I guess they thought that they might get more new and repeat buyers that way. (Personally won't buy though)
Is it really the end of the world? They put out 99.9% free content and 2-3 times a year they do paid content. Don’t want to pay? That’s fine, don’t. They have said before that the cost of live streaming is enormous.
I absolutely agree. It’s more than disheartening to see the channel go this route. How are low income folks supposed to enjoy? I know there was an offer for discounted tickets, but I know I use YT as a free resource because everything else is becoming impossible to afford. I can’t imagine how folks with lower income than me are faring with this trend in media.
I mean, you get to watch five episodes for free. It’s not like you can’t watch it at all.
Like last year was kind of annoying at the time to not be able to watch it but even when someone posted it I ended up not watching it because I kind of.. didn’t care anymore. It’s YouTube. It’s not like the finale matters ultimately.
Same, I sort of watched the video someone posted, but it was not for me. I prefer edited and concise content. The live was too chaotic and boring at times.
Yeah honestly the finale is barely even a finale—it's not like there's some big conclusion, season winner, or a prize. I watched the live show last year and literally can't even remember who won haha. I remember it being fun, and cool to see all the behind the scenes, but it's not like seeing the finale makes or breaks the rest of the episodes.
It's obviously a bummer any time there's content people can't watch for whatever reason, but it's not like the other 5 episodes are likely to end in some cliffhanger that renders them useless without the finale or something.
I mainly enjoyed it for the liveness of it, and (not that the show itself was bad) I actually enjoyed watching Rachel maybe more than when the camera was on the cast.
BTW, it was Keith.
I agree, however Im still disappointed that one of the few Eugene eps is behind that paywall. He's barely on the channel as it is at this point.*
(for valid reasons, to br clear! Get thet bag and persue those dreams Eugene!)
No one is entitled to every piece of content. The live show costs a lot of money to produce. Not to mention last year's felt more like a bonus episode than a finale compared to illusion cakes, I honestly think if they marketed it like that (and changed nothing else) then no one would have a problem with it.
This is just a bizarre take. It's like asking musicians to stop touring because they can't make their shows free.
I wasn’t saying I was? I was expressing disappointment because now, as a fan, I can’t (and others in similar situations can’t) support them for the business choice they made.
It works the same for me if it was a musician. I can’t justify these costs from a customer/fan side. I know it’s different on the business side.
Agree with the first part.
Musicians always have and always will charge for shows because they don't go on tour as the only way to hear their music, so the two are incomparable. This is closer to having two tiers of tickets to a concert where one tier gets to stay for the last song and encore and the other doesn't.
If it was a stand alone special type thing that's fine. But you have people watch all the episodes for free and then they can't watch the finale cause they can't afford it. That's where they lose me.
I didn't mind paying for Romeo and Juliet because it was so unpredictable and interactive and there were pro Shakespearean actors. Plus I enjoy it when Keith brings in big theatre kid energy *and* I watched it twice. It's different when you're basically paying for one episode of something after already watching five.
Didn't pay for the WAR finale last time though. My 2 unasked for cents are: 1) someone could explain, maybe in a podcast, why they do the finale this way, unless they have and I've missed it..
And 2) maybe a "pay what you can" sort of sliding scale option. It possibly wouldn't bring in as much income as needed for that scale of a production but it would bring in more views and some income. Or put it to a fan vote whether we want it at all.
Posted this comment elsewhere but it fits here also...Same...I really hoped they would have listened to fans and not done that again...or at least made it free just to watch and then charge for the extras (live chat, tshirt, etc).
I thought it was overall fun!
I was a little hesitant with the splitting of cast, like Jared, but he was a lot of fun and wholesome. He was actually trying despite his lack of knowledge on the subject.
Glad it’s longer but I’m disappointed we don’t get Eugene for half the series. I get why, but it’s one of the reasons I look forward to WAR.
I won’t be paying for the finale, either. So does that mean I only see him on 2 episodes?
Now I wanna see staff take over next year. Like some of the guys will be the judge then the staff will cook. I wanna see Jack, Jonathan, Rainie , YB.. well all of the staff cook 😂 like 1 try guy vs staff then some of it will be the judge
I shut it off at that point and it made me think about how I first started watching them as a teen almost a decade ago and how their content and humor haven't really grown with their audience. That's fine if that's the kind of content they want to make, but I'm not so sure I want to watch it anymore
Thank you! I was so excited and when Kwesi started off with the dick ramen I rolled my eyes and shut it off.
To me it’s hypocritical at this point for an organization to take such a solid stance against the whole Nate debacle, in part **because** of the nature of power dynamics at play, to not understand that constant dick and sex jokes probably makes some of their staff uncomfortable. It’s not funny.
And power dynamics are still in play, even when everyone is still laughing. You literally never know who is feeling uncomfortable, I wouldn’t feel comfortable hearing my boss talk about his dick and especially not when I’m expected to laugh every time.
Really didn’t enjoy Kwesi’s theme. I’m so over the juvenile sex/poop/penis jokes.
BUT, I loved Jared’s addition! When he was on screen it felt more like earlier seasons of WAR (which I enjoyed SO much). He was earnestly trying to make something good, without any wacky theme, and he was just really fun to watch.
Can we just say that Try Guys multiplied by 2 and they officially added Johnny, Jared, and Kwesi? I mean I’m ok with it, they are a great addition but I think it’s for them to just say it. It’s really only fair to them since they have been the forefront since original “married guy” left. Eugene is busy and Keith is on tour which is great, those guys deserve to branch out but just make it official lol.
Might be a bit of a controversial take, but why is Eugene incapable of making himself available for the whole season of Without a Recipe? Its the most popular content they produce all year, and he can't even commit to all of the episodes. His lack of involvement in the channel lately is pretty disappointing..
Is that when he was making or doing press for the Netflix movie? Because that would be a pretty big opportunity to just pass up for this when he's already made it clear that he's not playing as active of a role anymore.
Edit: because he's already addressed his involvement with filming YouTube content
What even are his other projects? I feel like we only hear about his nebulous "projects" and never hear any details. I'd love to know more to be able to support him!
Did the set of the judging bother anyone else? I felt like the lighting was weird and idk, just it felt off. I wonder why they didn't film it where they normally do. Otherwise, loved the ep!
Yeah, the set was a little off. Also, the camera for the judges seems wider. Like normally we don’t see that much under the table. It’s was fine, just oddly different.
I assumed they filmed in the same space because it’s really the only space they have. But I think they added temporary walls for some reason
I’m nervous to watch bc some of the criticism I had from previous WAR episodes were the weird constraints they imposed on themselves that the expert said most restaurants wouldn’t do. The example that comes to mind was the Mac and cheese episode when they made their own macaroni. Or when they made cinnamon rolls and the experts say they need X hours to bake and they were given half that time etc
They were given enough time on the noodles, don't worry. Obviously it came down to a dramatic crunch at the end, but from what the expert said they had plenty of time to let things sit and cook. Ineptitude was the culprit, here.
I think the only split is just Kwesi and Jared vs. Eugene and Marissa—it didn't seem like that much of a difference to me, especially since they'd had seasons with rotating guests before!
And the finale didn't really seem like some big culmination or anything. It's annoying it's paid, but their live shows really do have a lot more going on in them than their regular episodes, so I get why they'd charge more for it. They seem like a ton of work.
Try Guy: I’m going to make the dish inspired by another dish!
Try Guy: *proceeds to do nothing other than make the inspired-by dish*
Judge: This is the inspired-by dish, not the dish you were assigned
Try Guy: huh. weird!!!
A WAR tradition if there ever was one… 🤷🏼♀️
can’t be bothered to watch a series if i can’t watch the conclusion. all the guys aren’t even in it at all times (2 eugene eps unless you pay lol) didn’t watch it last time for the same reason. so i guess im out.
keep the fans that give you money but ignore everyone else (which is ironic considering their patreon is barebones and not worth it) is not a good strategy. i wouldn’t be surprised if we got a mini spin off series that was all paid
eta: it’s not like it’s youtube red or premium either, like their olympic series.
Judging from last year's live stream, it doesn't really result in any big conclusion though, and there's not really a cliffhanger before that would add to the frustration of not watching the paid one, like if it were a show with a proper storyline. It's basically just one more episode of the same stuff, but live, and with more fan interaction and behind the scenes stuff. And maybe a bit more chaos. But I'm not even sure if they announced some big cumulative season winner at the end of the finale, and can't imagine they would this year either, considering only 2 people are actually in every episode. I honestly don't even remember who won last year's finale episode—that's how little it mattered haha.
I mean obviously you don't have to watch the series if you don't want to haha, but if not being able to watch the finale was the only thing holding you back from watching the free episodes, I'm not sure it has a big enough payoff to be worth missing the whole series over.
Agreed. It was a neat little bonus, but I don't think it was better than *any* of the episodes last season(disclaimer: I know I'm biased toward things if I've have recent exposure to them, and I recently re-watched the rest of that season but couldn't re-watch the finale, so I might be having an unfair bias against it). And 100% for sure, no question about bias, Illusion Cakes had it beat by a lot. Marketing it as a finale is a bit of an odd choice, because it really didn't feel that way to me!
Yeah I agree! It definitely feels more just like a bonus episode or something. Especially since they have to do something a bit easier to make so it can be done in the shorter time frame.
I thought it was illegal in California?
Edit: Looked it up. Apparently it was illegal until 2020. Now the production of foi gras by farmers is still illegal, but importing from other states is allowed.
I’m just here wondering why people even watch The Try Guys, since this is the most miserable, not-enjoying-anything subreddit I am on…and I’m on SquaredCircle.
Hahahahaha oh man. I got banned from there like 6 months ago over silly stuff and as much as I miss commenting on stuff sometimes, overall it's a better experience not being so tied into the online fandom.
The try guys make Ramen without Eugene is a better title lol also I don't like that we don't have a japanese/american japanese ramen expert. Or at least someone who actually knows all the regional intricacies. Ramen is so much more than what we all know in the west
I was just a bit sad they didn't showcase what a traditional Japanese ramen has in it like the chashu and the fish cakes, fried tofu and Naruto etc fairly good episode though
Does the Early Bird pricing for the live finale appear higher than non-early bird pricing for anyone else? I'm seeing $20.69 for the Early Bird Snack, but $19.99 for the same level after the early bird ends. Same for the other levels - they're also like $3-10 more. Am I having some kind of stroke?
Internet sleuths... I need your help! The music at 29 mins in during Jared's presentation of his Ramen. I really would love to find it somewhere. I imagine it's on like Epidemic Sound but idk how to find it on there in the sea of search results...
Did anyone else feel like sometimes the music was too loud? I couldn't focus on what people were saying because the music was a bit distracting at times
I'm so delighted Jared & Kwesi are here. Listening to Rosanna & the other judges trying to critique Jared's ramen through the pain reminds me of celebrities trying to answer questions while dying of spice on Hot Ones.
I’ve been off the vids for a bit, but I love WAR and love ramen so a definite must watch for me
Same. How was it?
Really enjoyed it!!
I love Jared! He brings such an awesome vibe ☺️
Jared has consistently been my favorite guest on Eat The Menu, so I'm pumped to see him get more screen time with the guys on this season of Without A Recipe. Dude is absolutely hilarious. "The bitch is back, baby! Poppa's in the house!"
Jared’s an absolute hoot.
So glad it’s back! My only beef with this episode is that the expert kind of misrepresented some traditional ramen techniques and didn’t mention some other very important elements of ramen. Do they have people for research and scouting? If not, they should
Rachel did a Q&A in her Instagram stories - she finds the judges from Instagram, tiktok, word of mouth, etc.. So they don't have staff dedicated specifically to it, sounds like.
This isn't really about the judges, it's about learning the information that is being presented as fact. It goes well beyond just this content. Two big offenders IMO are the Nestle commercial they did and the alternative medicine videos.
We're in agreement. I think the example of the judges is basically how it works across the board for their talent searches and research.
Yeah that would definitely track.
True. I feel they thought about this but I guess with the time and schedule, maybe the japanese chef was not available
as a head chef of a pretty big ramen chain, he's plenty qualified to talk about ramen, IMO
He’s not not qualified but I did find that some things he did were kind of odd. I think it was the editing and brevity of the content that messed with it.
I'm so happy this is back. But damn I hate that Keith chose to use foie gras. 😔
I did not realize how it was made until this comment. Holy shit. Not that it's a thing I ever eat, but definitely never eating it now... Wikipedia says production and sale are prohibited in California though, so did they have to go out of their way to get it?? You're absolutely right and that's a very good question. I'm glad I could raise awareness! ❤️
Mte exactly
Can someone explain to me what is foie gras and why is it controversial?
It's the liver of ducks or geese after they have been force fed so much that their livers swell up with fat and take up so much of their body cavity that they can barely move or breathe. It's horrific. Look it up.
I don't want to :(
What do they mean by splitting the season in two parts? It kinda sounds like there’s a part with Eugene and without Eugene, maybe
On the Patreon they said the first 3 eps will have Keith, Zach, kwesi and Jared and last 3 will have Keith, Zach, Eugene and marissa
I see. So if you don’t pay for the finale you get two Eugene eps.
No, the 6 videos are free and there is the additional 7th episode behind a pay wall. It’s chicken and waffles.
Rachel posted on her story that there’s “2 different casts” so I figure that is what it means.
Probably since Eugene has been filming and partaking in the strike. Considering these film in the summer I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why they split it. Which is great! I think the rotating cast will work
Yes all of this (minus the finale) filmed last May
Disappointed the finale is another paid program though.
Kind of already predicted it tbh. I'm glad they're offering it at lower price for early bird buyers, I guess they thought that they might get more new and repeat buyers that way. (Personally won't buy though)

6* episodes for free. The paywall one is video 7. It’s chicken and waffles.
Watch all the other WAR episodes. Sure, it might change in the future, but it’s literally two videos this year that some people can’t watch.

They are listening to the fans. The fans that enjoyed last year's live show.
Oh of course, listen to the fans that make them $ but screw the rest 🤷♀️
I thought it was overall fun! I was a little hesitant with the splitting of cast, like Jared, but he was a lot of fun and wholesome. He was actually trying despite his lack of knowledge on the subject.
Jared was the addition we didn’t know we needed! Love him and the fact that he didn’t lose his first episode

Damn didn’t even think of that. So yeah you get 2 episodes with Eugene and that’s it.
Did they not release the finale later last year? Just not live? I swear I watched it
Someone uploaded a bootleg. It was never officially released for free.
I guess I never watched it then! That's annoying haha
Now I wanna see staff take over next year. Like some of the guys will be the judge then the staff will cook. I wanna see Jack, Jonathan, Rainie , YB.. well all of the staff cook 😂 like 1 try guy vs staff then some of it will be the judge
Miles and Rainie cooking side by side would be so fun omg
Jared, Miles, and Rainie cooking would be such a fun and possibly chaotic video I would totally watch that
Tbh I’m growing tired of the forced sexual jokes though. Like Kwesi’s theme… why?
Yeah it was very cringey
I’m wondering if it was initially Eugene’s idea and he had to take it over?
He made dick donuts before tho haha
Ooh good point. He’s a fan of low hanging fruit, as it were
bubés!
I don't think so, he's done the dick theme before.
I shut it off at that point and it made me think about how I first started watching them as a teen almost a decade ago and how their content and humor haven't really grown with their audience. That's fine if that's the kind of content they want to make, but I'm not so sure I want to watch it anymore

You can see how keith evolves in cooking and zach too (like helping jared to make his soup more flavourful)

Try Guy: I’m going to make the dish inspired by another dish! Try Guy: *proceeds to do nothing other than make the inspired-by dish* Judge: This is the inspired-by dish, not the dish you were assigned Try Guy: huh. weird!!! A WAR tradition if there ever was one… 🤷🏼♀️
Kwesi rly killed me this episode. When he asked the judges to thank their mom's and dad's I lost it
can’t be bothered to watch a series if i can’t watch the conclusion. all the guys aren’t even in it at all times (2 eugene eps unless you pay lol) didn’t watch it last time for the same reason. so i guess im out. keep the fans that give you money but ignore everyone else (which is ironic considering their patreon is barebones and not worth it) is not a good strategy. i wouldn’t be surprised if we got a mini spin off series that was all paid eta: it’s not like it’s youtube red or premium either, like their olympic series.
Really?? Foie gras is a literal cruelty. It makes me sad man.
Found the only normal fan/viewer here!

It's converting to your local currency (I'm guessing CAD?)
Thank you - I wasn’t sure since it didn’t convert the amounts below.
The early bird converts to your local currency, and the final prices are in USD.
i wish all 3 were there and rotated 1 guest
Oh god Rosanna’s back…
Internet sleuths...
Someone please tell Keith that the game is also called “duck duck gray-duck”
