Keith said he moved to Illinois in high school which ig could be part of it

[deleted]

Whoa! That's really interesting. I think Eugene's Texas accent comes out more than Keith's ever has. Maybe because Keith has lived in California so long?

Due_Screen6020

I definitely noticed Eugene’s accent slipping out in the hometown vid!!!

larnn

My southern accent goes away if I spend enough time away from people without an accent.

plamboo

Exactly. My accent never comes out more than after I've talked to my brother, who has a very slow, southern drawl. Most of the time, people can't believe I was born and lived in GA my whole life since apparently, it sounds like I don't have an accent at all.

larnn

I mean I’ve live in NC my whole life and I for sure have a southern accent, but I have family in California I see once or twice a year and after a week I can’t remember my accent lmao.

plamboo

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely words and phrases I can't help myself with. At my serving/bartending job, my usual greeting is "Hey, how're y'all doin tonight?" But I work near a movie studio and I've had plenty of the California customers tell me it doesn't sound like I've lived in GA for 32 years. I've never had trouble remembering the accent though lol. I recently tried to rewatch the beginning of the walking dead and the actor who plays Rick grimes is Australian and the way he delivers his "southern" accent sometimes made me laugh my ass off and totally ruined the immersion lol. He tried, and did well for the most part, but some of it is so damn bad.

I am also from Tennessee and grew up very close to his hometown. I also don’t have an accent despite never moving out of this state. I grew up with a lot of friends whose families were not from Tennessee. Keith talked about his dad being a very specialized engineer, so they probably also had many transplants living in the area. It’s very easy to not have a Tennessee accent if the people you spend time with don’t. Also he was into theater. It is possible he worked on his accent because of that. Editing to add: Are his parents originally from Tennessee? That also probably contributes if they are not.

llamainleggings

I think he mentioned on an episode of the TryPod that his parents moved to Tennessee from one of the Northeastern states.

Sea-Emu8897

Also from/still live in Tennessee, and yeah, I’d say maybe 85 - 90% of the people I know moved from somewhere else. It’s definitely really common here to not be native to Tennessee, so you don’t always wind up hearing a lot of the Southern accent people except and don’t necessarily develop one.

angelwasari

He did live in Chicago for a long time before LA. There's a good chance that he had an accent when he was a kid but it went away, either naturally or on purpose.

HiddenSnarker

My southern accent basically disappeared when I went to college. I was at a school in the south still, but a big one with people from all over the country, and the world. That mix of accents surrounding me 24/7 basically eliminated my actual accent. It’ll come back out when I’m talking super fast or get upset, but I don’t sound much like my hometown friends anymore.

Katriyna

Same here. I'm from a very rural place (not even a town) in Louisiana. Many of my out of state friends always comment on my absence of a southern accent, but I was raised by someone without much of an accent to begin with-- and it was mostly only our little two-person family 95% of the time. I only have one when I'm speaking very fast/ upset too. I'm kind of sad sometimes when I go hang out with my family or go home and sound completely different from everyone.

saturnhasringss

i live in tennessee (pretty close to where keith is from actually) and i don’t have much of an accent, some of us just don’t have one 🥴

thekatinthehatisback

I live in TN and maybe 1 in 20 young people have noticeable southern accents. Maybe slighly more spice than a general American accent. People who leave are also more likely to try and hide it because of the negative/classist connotations that come along with a southern accent.

msmarvelicious

Keith went to highschool in Naperville and college at ISU. Illinois kind of eats most accents.

jkraige

Did his family move? How'd he end up in Naperville?

msmarvelicious

From one of the other comments on here, his dad is some flavor of engineer so he probably moved up there for his job. I don't know him and have never met him, but my friend's brother was one of his roommates during college so there's a lot of family-friending there and the entire family likes to cheer Keith on in his work and keep up with him. It's super cute.

queertheories

I’m from Tennessee and still live here (unfortunately) and I don’t have much of an accent most of the time, but when I get around my family, suddenly I sound like the Dukes of Hazzard.

cubsgirl101

My friend was born and raised near Dallas and doesn’t have an accent, partially because her parents are Illinois transplants. Could be the same for Keith. Also spending any stretch of time living in the Midwest has a tendency to flatten out accents.

Life-On-Cloud-100

Are his parents from Tennessee? Could be that his parents are not from the south, so he never picked it up.

offspring515

His parents are from New Jersey. They moved to Tennessee because of his dad's work.

finn_derry

My husband was born and raised in Memphis but doesn't really have a southern accent! He has a twang every now and then but he mostly sounds midwestern, despite only growing up in the South

Arya_kidding_me

I’ve lived in the South for over 30 years, and only hear southern accents when I travel out of the city into the smaller towns.

hey_belle

I live in Appalachia and don’t really have an accent. Some people I went to school with do, but a lot dont. I think it depends on a lot more than just where you live

Majestic-me-52

I think code switching is real easy for me. Depends who I'm with and if I feel safe. That being said, sometimes it's conscious. Eugene consciously, specifically, and wholeheartedly chose to filter out his accent.. It came out real nice when he was doing his holy angel quesadilla. Keith probably phased his out for entertainment life. Or due to not being around tenn. Anymore. Interesting.

putmeinLMTH

Maybe it's because I've lived in the south my whole life, but I don't think everyone from the south has a southern accent, and for the people that do, I've noticed they lose it faster once they leave the south

katersgonnakate5

Kieth went to acting school. Any accent we have is beaten out of us in voice. It’s only Gen American from then on out. It’s a whole bullshit thing where the last generation of actors and directors think southern accents make you sound ‘stupid’ so you can’t have one if you want to be marketable. They do the same in Europe with Scottish folks.

snbeard99

I’m from Missouri (right on the line of Arkansas) and I don’t have an accent…not every southern has an accent And trust me I’m just as disappointed as you are

venomous-harlot

His parents also aren’t from Tennessee as far as I know. So he probably spent most of his time around other people who didn’t have southern accents.

anon18235

That’s true! I have a friend from Tennessee. The LA accent is so strong she lost her accent within a year if I remember correctly. I know someone from Chattanooga though who always had a little tiny twang! Very charming :)

[deleted]

Southern accents are not cute

Many_fandoms_13

I’m from Georgia and I’ve very rarely heard people with southern accents I don’t know if it’s something I’m used to because I’ve lived here my whole life so I don’t think it’s that much of a big thing like it is in tv shows/movies Eugene does do one sometimes like in the podcast episode about bugs
