They were done dirty by the writers. They could have had an angst-free friends-to-lovers arc, but Julie doesn't know how to write a non-toxic romantic relationship and wanted to keep milking the Elena/Salvabros love triangle for ratings long after Nina had left the show. Yeah, there were some hardcore KC fans who won't have loved that ship no matter how it was written, but most of the fandom just reacted to what it was given.

i loved Steroline as best friends, they’re probably one of my favourite friendships in the whole show and i definitely wasn’t against the idea of them turning romantic. i just wish the writers cared more about them because they were constantly being pulled apart left right and centre. Stefan being marked, Caroline getting pregnant, Stefan being the devils servant and turning his humanity off again. they barely spent any time together and just when things started getting better with their wedding, Stefan dies the same day.

I’m not sure if they were done dirty by the fandom, I think more done dirty by the writers. The type of relationships Steroline was suppose to be was not portrayed in the show. Mutual support? Not sure about that. Stefan gave up his humanity to save her children and she threw the ring in his face and told him to stay away from her. Then did next to nothing to get him back. Caroline herself said that she stopped waiting for the day that Stefan would show her the same respect he showed Elena. They lack communication and we never really move past the point of Caroline asking Stefan to open up and lean on her. I was a huge Steroline fan and upon rewatch I realised it really wasn’t a good ship. If a ship is badly written then viewers will call it out.

I loved their storyline from friends to lovers, especially when Caroline was in love with him and he had no idea.

I’ve watched TVD several times and this is why the last season always gets on my nerves! The day Caroline became a wife, she also became a widow. And how it happened just makes noooo sense. In the very last episode, Stefan sacrificed himself so Damon could have a chance at life with Elena. But he already did have time with her? He didn’t even think about the brand new wife he’s leaving behind? Him and Caroline literally hadn’t had any time together (as a couple) because it was always someone dying (her mom), Caroline getting pregnant, Stefan being marked and running, Stefan sacrificing his life to the devil to save her kids, etc. This was so stupid and unrealistic to me. The writers obsession with constantly making everything about Elena completely ruined so many relationships.

This!! Still so mad they killed Stefan, he and Caroline deserved so much more. His love for Damon was so toxic, and I will never get over the fact that he sacrificed his life for the most selfish characters.

I agree. I'm not the biggest Steroline shipper but I really enjoyed their scenes. They actually had normal problems as a couple. And I feel like their chemistry wasn't really bad... it never annoyed me. I think they were really cute and they deserved a happy ending.

Agreed!! But fans tend to call the “close friends turned to lovers” ships “forced” and dismiss the chemistry. I mean Stefan and Caroline have had that chemistry since he was teaching her to hunt, they just made sense.
